Abstract

Optical Method for precisely docking spacecraft and satellite promises useful in terrestrial applications, such as control of robot movements in manufacturing. Reflections of laser beam from patterns on satellite yield information on radial misalinement, angle between axes, and range. Target pattern consists of rings of alternating high and low reflectivity and central section where reflectivity varies with angle of incidence but not with position.
