Convergence Analysis of a Cascade Architecture Neural Network

Abstract

In this paper, we present a mathematical foundation, including a convergence analysis, for cascading architecture neural networks. From this, a mathematical foundation for the casade correlation learning algorithm can also be found. Furthermore, it becomes apparent that the cascade correlation scheme is a special case of an efficient hardware learning algorithm called Cascade Error Projection.

Paired Neural Network for Matching Experimental and Predicted Infrared Spectra

Here, we present a novel machine learning (ML)-based scoring technique for determining the similarity between experimental and predicted infrared (IR) spectra for identification purposes. IR spectroscopy is a powerful technique used to identify the molecular structure and composition of a sample by measuring the unique vibrational frequency pattern of the molecule’s functional groups. Molecular identifications are often made by comparing experimental and reference spectra. However, the limited number of reference spectra available in spectral libraries can confound the identification process. Alternative identification procedures rely on in silico techniques to simulate spectra for a wide range of molecules. However, scoring spectral similarity between an experimental query and computationally predicted reference remains a significant challenge. Our proposed ML-based scoring technique overcomes these barriers by accurately and efficiently determining spectral similarity.

A deep generative model for deciphering cellular dynamics and in silico drug discovery in complex diseases

Human diseases are characterized by intricate cellular dynamics. Single-cell transcriptomics provides critical insights, yet a persistent gap remains in computational tools for detailed disease progression analysis and targeted in silico drug interventions. Here we introduce UNAGI, a deep generative neural network tailored to analyse time-series single-cell transcriptomic data. This tool captures the complex cellular dynamics underlying disease progression, enhancing drug perturbation modelling and screening. When applied to a dataset from patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, UNAGI learns disease-informed cell embeddings that sharpen our understanding of disease progression, leading to the identification of potential therapeutic drug candidates. Validation using proteomics reveals the accuracy of UNAGI’s cellular dynamics analysis, and the use of the fibrotic cocktail-treated human precision-cut lung slices confirms UNAGI’s predictions that nifedipine, an antihypertensive drug, may have anti-fibrotic effects on human tissues. UNAGI’s versatility extends to other diseases, including COVID, demonstrating adaptability and confirming its broader applicability in decoding complex cellular dynamics beyond idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, amplifying its use in the quest for therapeutic solutions across diverse pathological landscapes.

An Artificial Neural Network for Inferring Solar Wind Proxies at Mars

We present a novel method to determine solar wind proxies from sheath measurements at Mars. Specifically, we develop an artificial neural network (ANN) to simultaneously infer seven solar wind proxies: ion density, ion speed, ion temperature, and interplanetary magnetic field magnitude and its vector components, using spacecraft measurements of ion moments, magnetic field magnitude, magnetic field components in the sheath, and the solar extreme ultraviolet flux. The ANN was trained and tested using3 years of data from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft. When compared with MAVEN spacecraft's in situ measured values of the solar wind parameters, we find that the ANN proxies for the solar wind ion density, ion speed, ion temperature, and interplanetary magnetic field magnitude havepercentage differences of 50% or less for 84.4%, 99.9%, 86.8%, and 79.8% of the instances, respectively. Forthe cone angle and clock angle proxies, 69.1% and 53.3% of instances, respectively, have angle differences of 30* or less.
