Development Challenges of Game-Changing Entry System Technologies From Concept to Mission Infusion

Abstract

NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) and the Game Changing Development Program (GCDP) were created to develop new technologies. This paper describes four entry system technologies that are funded by the GCDP and summarizes the lessons learned during the development. The investments are already beginning to show success, mission infusion pathways after five years of existence. It is hoped that our experience and observations, drawn from projects supported by the GCD program/STMD, Orion and SMD can help current and future technology development projects. Observations on fostering a culture of success and on constraints that limit greater success are also provided.

Characterization of CO Thermochemistry in Incident Shockwaves

Incident shock waves in pure CO have been characterized in the Electric Arc Shock Tube facility at NASA Ames Research Center. Spectrally and spatially resolved emission spectra characterize radiative signatures from CO in the VUV (Vacuum Ultra-Violet) and mid-infrared and atomic carbon and C2 in the visible. CO absorption of a single vibrational line is also measured with a tunable diode laser. The experimental data analyzed here are at a pressure of 0.25 Torr in the driven section and span a shock velocity range from 3.4-9.5 km/s. The emission and absorption signals are analyzed to extract temperature relaxation behind the shock which is used to derive the rate of CO dissociation. The emission spectra are compared to results using different kinetic parameters for CO dissociation and C2 dissociation and exchange. Different rates from the literature are found to match the data from 3.4-6.6 km/s and 6.6-9.5 km/s. Areas for improvement in CO and C2 radiation modeling are suggested on the basis of the analysis.

Guidance and Control Architecture Design and Demonstration for Low Ballistic Coefficient Atmospheric Entry

We propose to develop a robust guidance and control system for the ADEPT (Adaptable Deployable Entry and Placement Technology) entry vehicle. A control-centric model of ADEPT will be developed to quantify the performance of candidate guidance and control architectures for both aerocapture and precision landing missions. The evaluation will be based on recent breakthroughs in constrained controllability/reachability analysis of control systems and constrained-based energy-minimum trajectory optimization for guidance development operating in complex environments.

Mars Sample Return Using Commercial Capabilities: Propulsive Entry, Descent and Landing

Mars Sample Return (MSR) is the highest priority science mission for the next decade as recommended by the recent Decadal Survey of Planetary Science. The objective of the study was to determine whether emerging commercial capabilities can be integrated into to such a mission. The premise of the study is that commercial capabilities can be more efficient than previously described systems, and by using fewer systems and fewer or less extensive launches, overall mission cost can be reduced. This presentation describes an EDL technique using planned upgrades to the Dragon capsule to perform a Supersonic Retropulsion Entry - Red Dragon concept. Landed Payload capability meets mission requirements for a MSR Architecture that reduces complexity.
