Abstract

The NASA Tiltrotor Test Rig (TTR) is a new, large-scale proprotor test system, developed jointly with the U.S. Army and Air Force, to develop a new, large-scale proprotor test system for the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex (NFAC). The TTR is designed to test advanced proprotors up to 26 feet in diameter at speeds up to 300 knots, and even larger rotors at lower airspeeds. This combination of size and speed is unprecedented and is necessary for research into 21st-century tiltrotors and other advanced rotorcraft concepts. The TTR will provide critical data for validation of state-of-the-art design and analysis tools.

Analytical Performance, Loads, and Aeroelastic Stability of a Full-Scale Isolated Proprotor

The prediction of the performance and loads of a full-scale isolated proprotor and the calculation of whirl flutter stability of the rotor installed in a wind tunnel are considered in this study. The comprehensive analysis CAMRAD II is used. The test article is a research proprotor based on the Bell 609 rotor and the wind tunnel test apparatus is the newly developed Tiltrotor Test Rig (TTR) installed in the USAF NFAC 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel. The performance and loads predictions and the stability calculations cover the following operating conditions: hover, cruise, conversion, and helicopter mode. These pre-test analytical results are being obtained to identify test operating limits, ensure a safe wind tunnel test and predict test results. Eventually, the goal is to perform a correlation study, identify shortfalls in the analytical model and introduce improvements to the analytical model. Performance and loads test results to date show that rotor torque (and yoke lag moment) may limit the test envelope. Shake test data based stability analysis shows that the TTR/609 is solidly stable within the test envelope.

Assessment of JVX Proprotor Performance Data in Hover and Airplane-Mode Flight Conditions

A 0.656-scale V-22 proprotor, the Joint Vertical Experimental (JVX) rotor, was tested at the NASA Ames Research Center in both hover and airplane-mode (high-speed axial flow) flight conditions, up to an advance ratio of 0.562 (231 knots). This paper examines the two principal data sets generated by those tests, and includes investigations of hub spinner tares, torque/thrust measurement interactions, tunnel blockage effects, and other phenomena suspected of causing erroneous measurements or predictions. Uncertainties in hover and high-speed data are characterized. The results are reported here to provide guidance for future wind tunnel tests, data processing, and data analysis.

Optimization of Variable Depth Acoustic Liners with Grazing Flow

Acoustic liners, typically used as a noise control treatment in the engine nacelles of conventional aircraft, are being considered for noise treatment in the proprotor ducts of a vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. This work considers a new optimization method to design an acoustic liner with variable depth cavities for broadband and low-frequency attenuation. This method, termed the direct optimization method, minimizes the radiated sound from a duct. In this paper, the new method is compared with an existing indirect method to design multiple variable depth acoustic liners. Acoustic impedances of liners designed using both methods are predicted using a semianalytical impedance model and impedance predictions for two designs are compared to experimental results acquired from grazing flow impedance testing. For the work presented here, liners designed using the indirect approach provide improved attenuation spectra over those designed using the direct approach but potential improvements to the performance of the direction optimization method are discussed.
