Maximizing Earth Science Observations with Data Harmonization: Harmonized Landsat/Sentinel-2

Abstract

In August 2021, NASA released science quality harmonized Landsat/Sentinel-2 products for both cloud-based access and direct download from the Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC). These 30-meter products, HLSS30 (Sentinel-2 component) and HLSL30 (Landsat component) are placed on the same grid and are generated and distributed fully in the cloud. Similarly, ESA is prototyping harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 products at 10-meter resolution. The data production and science teams from NASA and ESA will present technical details on the data production system, data product status and availability, and the benefit of harmonizing instruments with similar sensing characteristics between the agencies.

What's It like to See Earth from Space? Viewing Your World with NASA's Worldview!

When you first see Earth from space, you'll realize it's largely covered in white - our world is quite cloudy! Look closer and you'll discern landmasses, oceans, and regions covered in snow. Look closer still and you'll notice that our world is in constant motion - storms brewing and tracing paths over the oceans, plumes of smoke from wildfires and plumes of ash from volcanic eruptions billowing with the wind, dust storms blowing across the deserts, phytoplankton swirling in the oceans, icebergs floating in the oceans, and you'll see the human footprint on the earth's surface: cities connected by roads and vast swaths of agriculture. NASA's Worldview (https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov) interactive web map application provides a platform to view the world as it has been every day for the past 18 years, using data from NASA's fleet of Earth Observing System (EOS) satellites.This presentation will cover the history and development of the Worldview web map application; the 700+ imagery layers that are provided by the Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS) (https://earthdata.nasa.gov/gibs); current and new features that are in Worldview to constantly improve the user experience; the interdisciplinary nature of the app and how it helps a broad range of user communities discover and interact with NASA satellite imagery; and ongoing efforts to improve Worldview and serve user communities.

Embracing Open Source for NASA's Earth Science Data Systems

The overarching purpose of NASAs Earth Science program is to develop a scientific understanding of Earth as a system. Scientific knowledge is most robust and actionable when resulting from transparent, traceable, and reproducible methods. Reproducibility includes open access to the data as well as the software used to arrive at results. Additionally, software that is custom-developed for NASA should be open to the greatest degree possible, to enable re-use across Federal agencies, reduce overall costs to the government, remove barriers to innovation, and promote consistency through the use of uniform standards. Finally, Open Source Software (OSS) practices facilitate collaboration between agencies and the private sector. To best meet these ends, NASAs Earth Science Division promotes the full and open sharing of not only all data, metadata, products, information, documentation, models, images, and research results but also the source code used to generate, manipulate and analyze them. This talk focuses on the challenges to open sourcing NASA developed software within ESD and the growing pains associated with establishing policies running the gamut of tracking issues, properly documenting build processes, engaging the open source community, maintaining internal compliance, and accepting contributions from external sources. This talk also covers the adoption of existing open source technologies and standards to enhance our custom solutions and our contributions back to the community. Finally, we will be introducing the most recent OSS contributions from NASA Earth Science program and promoting these projects for wider community review and adoption.

Ensuring and Improving Information Quality for Earth Science Data and Products: Role of the ESIP Information Quality Cluster

Quality of products is always of concern to users regardless of the type of products. The focus of this paper is on the quality of Earth science data products. There are four different aspects of quality - scientific, product, stewardship and service. All these aspects taken together constitute Information Quality. With increasing requirement on ensuring and improving information quality, there has been considerable work related to information quality during the last several years. Given this rich background of prior work, the Information Quality Cluster (IQC), established within the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) has been active with membership from multiple organizations. Its objectives and activities, aimed at ensuring and improving information quality for Earth science data and products, are discussed briefly.
