Longevity evaluation of SiC based alpha voltaic batteries with surface alpha sources

Abstract

The alpha emitting actinide 241 Am is electrodeposited on the surface of the Pt electrode of in-house fabricated SiC Schottky diodes. With 17 nCi 241 Am directly coated on the top of a device, the 2-pi geometry yields a high energy (5.486 MeV) and a long-term irradiation accumulating to a high fluence (1.6 × 10 9 alpha particles’ infusion/month). The forward, reverse I/V, and dark current, are periodically measured to monitor key characteristics of device durability for any sign of degradation over time. The direct deposition of actinides on the surface of the device also enables the evaluation of radiation damage through alpha particles’ energy spectroscopic performance, which shows a clear spectrum degradation that can be reversed by optical excitation of the device prior to spectrum acquisition. As an analytical aide, the device performance is also simulated by Allpix 2 . Lastly, this study provides an insight into the durability of 4H-SiC as an energy converter option for alpha-voltaic batteries and the survivability in the other harsh environment found in nuclear fuel cycle, high energy physics, fission, fusion, and space exploration where rad-hard sensors are required.

Excitation Wavelength-Dependent Emission from Americium(III) in Mineral Acid Solutions

The photoluminescence behavior of trivalent americium, Am(III), in mineral acid solutions is reported under direct-metal excitation at seven high-energy wavelengths in the ultraviolet and visible regions (378-512 nm). This study revealed a dependence of the Am(III)-based visible emission profile on the chosen excitation wavelength. For example, excitation at the more common wavelength of 504 nm produces the two expected emission bands: one at approximately 600 nm (5D1' to 7F0') and another at 690 nm (5D1' to 7F1'). When the excitation wavelength is shifted to 398 nm (targeting the 5D3', 5H7' from 7F0' transitions), the emission occurs almost exclusively at 600 nm. This behavior is unexpected and potentially highlights fundamental knowledge gaps in the current understanding of the intraconfigurational 5f-5f electronic transitions that give rise to Am(III) photoluminescence. Although a full interpretation of these results is limited by the incomplete understanding of Am(III) speciation in mineral acid systems, this study explores several potential explanations for the observed behavior and challenges the widely held assumption of a single emissive Am(III) species.

The European Radioisotope Power Systems Program: Updates & Synergies

Radioisotope power systems (RPS) are an essential building block of the space exploration strategies of a number of countries around the world. The UK, US and the European Space Agency (ESA) view RPS technologies as enabling for a range of scientific space missions targeting the most challenging, distant, and cold environments in the solar system over the coming decades. However, RPS interest and associated capabilities are growing across the globe, where drivers include the increasing importance of space to address defense and commercial interests. Most missions have utilized 238 Pu as the radioisotope of choice to generate electrical power and to produce heat for the operation and thermal management of spacecraft systems. In Europe, since 2009, 241 Am in ceramic form has been selected for the ESA RPS development program. The ESA program has evolved in the past few years into a cross directorate program. This paper provides an update on this RPS technology program with a focus on technology updates, missions and partnerships.
