Blind QC trend presentation

Abstract

Blind testing is used to evaluate performance of the radiobioassay laboratory. DOE-STD-1112-2019 requires a radiobioassay program to perform blind testing at a documented frequency including accuracy, false positive, false negative, and sensitivity evaluations. INL trends accuracy determinations over time for bias, agreement, and precision. Trends have been identified for certain isotopes in urine and feces that have not been fully explained. This presentation will review those identified trends and discuss possible causes and solutions.

Oxidation of biogenic U(IV) mediated by iron-bearing clay minerals, iron-reducing bacteria, and organic ligands

Bioreduction of hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) to tetravalent uranium (U(IV)) by dissimilatory metal-reducing bacteria (DMRB) is considered an effective strategy for uranium immobilization in contaminated environments. However, U(IV) can be reoxidized to U(VI) under fluctuating redox conditions and remobilized. This work investigates the oxidation behavior of biogenic U(IV) in the presence of bioreduced iron-bearing clay minerals (rNAu-2), iron-reducing bacteria (Shewanella putrefaciens CN32), and organic ligands (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citrate). Results demonstrate that the presence of CN32 significantly inhibits U(IV) oxidation. rNAu-2 exerted a context-dependent influence on U(IV) oxidation: its effect was masked by bicarbonate-promoted U(VI) mobilization in the absence of active CN32, but became detectable when CN32-mediated microbial protection slowed U(IV) oxidation. EDTA and citrate markedly accelerate U(IV) oxidation via formation of soluble U(IV)-ligand complexes, changing U(IV) redox potentials, and by promoting clay mineral dissolution that enhances Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycling. Collectively, our findings constrain the roles that clay minerals, iron-reducing bacteria, and organic ligands play in governing U(IV) stability, emphasizing the need to account for these factors in developing robust bioremediation strategies.

Sintering effects on NpO 2 grain size and morphology: The role of precursor Np phase

Neptunium dioxide (NpO 2 ) is a key phase in nuclear material processing as a target material for the production of plutonium-238 ( 238 Pu) and has been historically synthesized via the calcination of a Np oxalate precursor. Alternative synthesis methods for NpO 2 are now more prevalent, necessitating their study and comparison with the more common oxalate route. The purpose of this work was to investigate the microstructural properties of NpO 2 synthesized from a nitrate-based Np precursor phase via the assessment of NpO 2 particle size and morphology as a function of calcination temperature and time. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to probe the primary grain size and morphology of NpO 2 after calcination at temperatures ranging from 700 to 1100 °C and hold times ranging from 1 to 10 h. Post-image analysis using ImageJ software enabled the quantification of mean particle diameter. This analysis indicated that particle diameter increases with both increasing calcination temperature and hold time. Primary particles were shown to be clumped in irregular patterns into the overall rough, blocky aggregates, but this macroscopic morphology was not affected by calcination time or temperature. Although trends in primary grain size of NpO 2 were consistent with available literature from other Np precursor phases, the macroscopic morphology of the NpO 2 aggregates was quite different than reported for other precursors. Through comparison with historical literature on Np oxalate, this work emphasizes the importance of Np precursor on the physical properties of NpO 2 .

A Python Tool for Aqueous Plutonium Nitrate Density Law Input Preprocessing in MCNP6

Here, this work develops a predictive density tool in Python, named Plutonium Nitrate Solutions (PuNS), to reduce bias and uncertainty in nuclear criticality safety calculations for plutonium nitrate systems. The Pitzer method and an empirical method were implemented into the PuNS tool to generate atom densities for use in MCNP6 material cards. These material cards are directly prepared into an MCNP6 input text file and are calculated based on customizable user inputs of plutonium content, nitric acid content, temperature, and plutonium isotope weight percentages. The PuNS tool is validated and verified against the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project Handbook experiments and is observed to predict densities within a root mean square error of 0.89% for the Pitzer method and 1.82% for the empirical method. These errors in density lead to up to 1569 pcm difference in MCNP6 calculated k eff for the Pitzer method and up to a 1751 pcm difference for the empirical method when compared to experimental benchmarks. Simultaneous work is also being performed at Los Alamos National Laboratory and the University of New Mexico to create a similar tool for plutonium chloride solutions, named Plutonium Chloride Solution, which aims to provide the accreditation of the chlorine absorption. These capabilities will not only provide more accurate models but also facilitate an improved understanding of solution systems and a potential relaxation in the conservatism of current aqueous plutonium processing criticality safety limits.
