Selective Binding and Light-Driven Release of Fluorous PF 6 – and Radioactive 99 TcO 4 – Anions for All-to-Nothing Liquid–Liquid Extraction

Abstract

The removal of anions from aqueous media using molecular receptors in liquid–liquid extraction is a long-standing strategy to clean up contaminated water sources. Therein, high selectivity is needed to remove specific ions from mixtures of other ions, and high affinity provides extractions at low concentrations. However, the high affinity creates a conundrum by impeding the release of the ions in any stripping steps needed for further processing. To circumvent this problem, light-responsive receptors have been proposed as candidates for turning off the binding, but they are currently untested in liquid–liquid extraction. We tested the feasibility of light-driven release using a cyanostar macrocycle. We demonstrate the selective extraction of PF$^{–}_{6}$ anions over large excesses of competing anions (Cl – , NO$^{–}_{3}$, SO$^{2–}_{4}$) followed by photodriven release for quantitative isolation of the target. Release relies on photoisomerization of the macrocycle’s five stilbenes generating distorted isomers to turn off binding. With modest reversibility, only a single-shot release was demonstrated, akin to photodriven uncaging. These methods were extended to the capture and photodriven release of ReO$^{–}_{4}$ and radioactive 99 TcO$^{–}_{4}$ anions at ∼90% efficiency. Extraction was demonstrated down to the highly dilute 4 ppb levels of the 99 TcO$^{–}_{4}$ anion. Furthermore, this proof-of-concept demonstration verifies the use of a large change in affinity for the all-to-nothing capture and release of target anions between liquid phases.

Comprehensive structural characterization of charged polymers involved in moisture-driven direct air capture

This study provides a comprehensive structural characterization of commercially available alkaline anion-exchange polymers (Fumasep FAA-3 and IRA 900) used in moisture-driven direct air capture (DAC) of carbon dioxide. Using X-ray diffraction, SAXS/WAXS, atomic force microscopy, FIB-SEM, and transmission electron microscopy, the authors identify nanoscale clustering, porosity, swelling behavior, and humidity-dependent structural changes that influence CO₂ adsorption and release. These findings establish structure–function relationships critical for designing more durable and energy-efficient DAC polymer materials.

Heavy Element Spectroscopy in the Gas Phase

Actinides are inherently unstable and undergo nuclear decay processes with a concurrent release of energy. Consequently, they are used for nuclear power generation, nuclear weapons, and nuclear medicine. However, the radioactive decay processes also pose significant technological problems for the safe treatment and storage of spent nuclear materials. Cost-effective extraction of the actinides is the key first step in the remediation of nuclear waste, but the appropriate chemical means have yet to be determined. Our present understanding of the chemistry of actinides is limited, with the role of the 5f electrons posing a set of particularly challenging questions. The work reported here is focused on the use of electronic spectroscopy to probe the bonding of small molecules in the gas phase that contains thorium or uranium. Analyses of these data, carried out within the framework of ligand field theory, reveal clear evidence that the 5f electrons are spectators that retain their atomic metal ion character.

Characterization of NBCMA—A DAPO Precursor

As part of our investigation into the process optimization of 2,6-diaminopyrazine-1-oxide (DAPO), small-scale sensitivity testing (impact, friction, and ESD) was conducted on the precursor, N-nitroso-bis(cyanomethyl)amine (NBCMA). NBCMA exhibited moderate sensitivity to friction, whereas no sensitivity to impact or spark was observed.
