Application of artificial neural networks to thermal detection of disbonds

A novel technique for processing thermal data is presented and applied to simulation as well as experimental data. Using a neural network of thermal data classification, good classification accuracies are obtained, and the resulting images exhibit very good contrast between bonded and disbonded locations. In order to minimize the preprocessing required before using the network of classification, the temperature values were directly employed to train a network using data from an on-site testing run of a commercial aircraft. Training was extremely fast, and the resulting classification also agreed reasonably well with an ultrasonic characterization of the panel. The results obtained using one sample show the partially disbonded vertical doubler. The vertical lines along the doubler correspond to the original extent of the doubler obtained using blueprints of the aircraft.

An application of artificial neural networks to experimental data approximation

As an initial step in the evaluation of networks, a feedforward architecture is trained to approximate experimental data by the backpropagation algorithm. Several drawbacks were detected and an alternative learning algorithm was then developed to partially address the drawbacks. This noniterative algorithm has a number of advantages over the backpropagation method and is easily implemented on existing hardware.

Three-D Artificial Neural Network (3DANN) technology. Blueprint for the future

Irvine Sensors Corporation (ISC), working closely with JPL under BMDO/ONR sponsorship, is developing a radically new neural computing technology. Primarily aimed at discrimination and target recognition for BMDO missile interceptor applications, it appears to have near term commercial applicability to such problems as handwriting and face recognition, just to name two. In its earliest form it will be able to perform inner product computation using 262 thousand 64x64 templates (weighted synapse arrays) where the 64(exp 5) weights can all be changed every millisecond. Internal switching provides an inherent capability to zoom, translate, or rotate the templates. The 3D silicon architecture is manufactured on a commercial, high volume DRAM production line at very low cost, enabling its commercialization. Two technology thrusts are beginning: in the first, the 64 layer capability of 3DANN-I will be extended to 1024 layers and beyond. In the second layer size will be shrunk to 2-3 millimeters to reduce layer costs. Our workshop goal is to expose this technology to the neural network community as an emerging tool for their use and to obtain their desire for its future development.

Object-Oriented Control System Design Using On-Line Training of Artificial Neural Networks

This report deals with the object-oriented model development of a neuro-controller design for permanent magnet (PM) dc motor drives. The system under study is described as a collection of interacting objects. Each object module describes the object behaviors, called methods. The characteristics of the object are included in its variables. The knowledge of the object exists within its variables, and the performance is determined by its methods. This structure maps well to the real world objects that comprise the system being modeled. A dynamic learning architecture that possesses the capabilities of simultaneous on-line identification and control is incorporated to enforce constraints on connections and control the dynamics of the motor. The control action is implemented "on-line", in "real time" in such a way that the predicted trajectory follows a specified reference model. A design example of controlling a PM dc motor drive on-line shows the effectiveness of the design tool. This will therefore be very useful in aerospace applications. It is expected to provide an innovative and noval software model for the rocket engine numerical simulator executive.

A Rapid Aerodynamic Design Procedure Based on Artificial Neural Networks

An aerodynamic design procedure that uses neural networks to model the functional behavior of the objective function in design space has been developed. This method incorporates several improvements to an earlier method that employed a strategy called parameter-based partitioning of the design space in order to reduce the computational costs associated with design optimization. As with the earlier method, the current method uses a sequence of response surfaces to traverse the design space in search of the optimal solution. The new method yields significant reductions in computational costs by using composite response surfaces with better generalization capabilities and by exploiting synergies between the optimization method and the simulation codes used to generate the training data. These reductions in design optimization costs are demonstrated for a turbine airfoil design study where a generic shape is evolved into an optimal airfoil.

Artificial Neural Network with Hardware Training and Hardware Refresh

A neural network circuit is provided having a plurality of circuits capable of charge storage. Also provided is a plurality of circuits each coupled to at least one of the plurality of charge storage circuits and constructed to generate an output in accordance with a neuron transfer function. Each of a plurality of circuits is coupled to one of the plurality of neuron transfer function circuits and constructed to generate a derivative of the output. A weight update circuit updates the charge storage circuits based upon output from the plurality of transfer function circuits and output from the plurality of derivative circuits. In preferred embodiments, separate training and validation networks share the same set of charge storage circuits and may operate concurrently. The validation network has a separate transfer function circuits each being coupled to the charge storage circuits so as to replicate the training network s coupling of the plurality of charge storage to the plurality of transfer function circuits. The plurality of transfer function circuits may be constructed each having a transconductance amplifier providing differential currents combined to provide an output in accordance with a transfer function. The derivative circuits may have a circuit constructed to generate a biased differential currents combined so as to provide the derivative of the transfer function.

Automated Wildfire Detection Through Artificial Neural Networks

Wildfires have a profound impact upon the biosphere and our society in general. They cause loss of life, destruction of personal property and natural resources and alter the chemistry of the atmosphere. In response to the concern over the consequences of wildland fire and to support the fire management community, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service (NESDIS) located in Camp Springs, Maryland gradually developed an operational system to routinely monitor wildland fire by satellite observations. The Hazard Mapping System, as it is known today, allows a team of trained fire analysts to examine and integrate, on a daily basis, remote sensing data from Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES), Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite sensors and generate a 24 hour fire product for the conterminous United States. Although assisted by automated fire detection algorithms, N O M has not been able to eliminate the human element from their fire detection procedures. As a consequence, the manually intensive effort has prevented NOAA from transitioning to a global fire product as urged particularly by climate modelers. NASA at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland is helping N O M more fully automate the Hazard Mapping System by training neural networks to mimic the decision-making process of the frre analyst team as well as the automated algorithms.

Artificial Neural Networks

Electric power systems represent complex systems involving many electrical components whoseoperation has to be planned, analyzed, monitored and controlled. The time-scale of tasks in electricpower systems extends from long term planning years ahead to milliseconds in the area of control. The behavior of power systems is highly non-linear. Monitoring and control involves several hundred variables which are only partly available by measurements.

Artificial Neural Networks for Determining Magnetospheric Conditions

This chapter presents a neural-network-based technique that allows for the reconstruction of the global, time-varying distribution of some physical quantity Q, that has been sparsely sampled at various locations within the magnetosphere, and at different times. We begin with a general introduction to the problem of prediction and specification, and why it is important and difficult to achieve with existing methods. We then provide a basic introduction to neural networks, and describe our technique using the specific example of reconstructing the electron plasma density in the Earth's inner magnetosphere on the equatorial plane. We then show more advanced uses of the technique, including 3D reconstruction of the plasma density, specification of chorus and hiss waves, and energetic particle fluxes. We summarize and conclude with a general discussion of how machine learning techniques might be used to advance the state-of-the-art in space weather prediction, and insight discovery.

Physically-Informed Artificial Neural Networks for Atomistic Modeling of Materials

A new approach is presented for the development of classical interatomic potentials using physically-informed neural networks (PINN) combined with an analytical bond-order atomic interaction model. Due to the strong physical underpinnings, the PINN potentials demonstrate much better transferability than the existing machine-learning potentials while drastically improving the accuracy in comparison with traditional potentials. PINN potentials can be constructed for both metallic and covalent materials in a unified manner. A number of applications of PINN potentials to large-scale molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations and calculation of thermal and mechanical properties of diverse materials are demonstrated. Some of the specific materials systems include silicon and aluminum, as well as alloys and compounds. Computational aspects of PINN potentials are discussed and future developments in this field are outlined.

Developing Data-Driven Artificial Neural Network for A High Throughput Retrieval of Aerosol Optical Depth and Surface Temperature of Mars

In this work, we aim to developartificial neural network(ANN)techniquesto reproduce the retrieval results ofphysical quantities from spacecraft observations of solar system bodiesusing radiative transfer methods. The particular application here is the retrieval of dust optical depth, water-ice optical depth, and surface temperatureonMarsusingdaytime observationsobtained by the Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) onboard the Mars Global Surveyor.Compared against the results obtained from traditional radiative transfer retrieval techniques, our ANN successfully recoveredthe three quantitiesusingdaytime observations. The principal advantage of thesemachine learning(ML) algorithms istheir complete automation and highthroughput. Therefore, the algorithms presented here would be useful for very large datasets andwould make practical the sampling of many different approximations or boundary conditions related to a given observation dataset and retrieval problem.
