The Pantheon+ Analysis: The Full Data Set and Light-curve Release

Abstract Here we present 1701 light curves of 1550 unique, spectroscopically confirmed Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) that will be used to infer cosmological parameters as part of the Pantheon+ SN analysis and the Supernovae and H 0 for the Equation of State of dark energy distance-ladder analysis. This effort is one part of a series of works that perform an extensive review of redshifts, peculiar velocities, photometric calibration, and intrinsic-scatter models of SNe Ia. The total number of light curves, which are compiled across 18 different surveys, is a significant increase from the first Pantheon analysis (1048 SNe), particularly at low redshift ( z ). Furthermore, unlike in the Pantheon analysis, we include light curves for SNe with z < 0.01 such that SN systematic covariance can be included in a joint measurement of the Hubble constant ( H 0 ) and the dark energy equation-of-state parameter ( w ). We use the large sample to compare properties of 151 SNe Ia observed by multiple surveys and 12 pairs/triplets of “SN siblings”—SNe found in the same host galaxy. Distance measurements, application of bias corrections, and inference of cosmological parameters are discussed in the companion paper by Brout et al., and the determination of H 0 is discussed by Riess et al. These analyses will measure w with ∼3% precision and H 0 with ∼1 km s −1 Mpc −1 precision.

Assimilation of citizen science data in snowpack modeling using a new snow data set: Community Snow Observations

A physically based snowpack evolution and redistribution model was used to test the effectiveness of assimilating crowd-sourced snow depth measurements collected by citizen scientists. The Community Snow Observations project gathers, stores, and distributes measurements of snow depth recorded by recreational users and snow professionals in high mountain environments. These citizen science measurements are valuable since they come from terrain that is relatively undersampled and can offer in situ snow information in locations where snow information is sparse or nonexistent. The present study investigates (1) the improvements to model performance when citizen science measurements are assimilated, and (2) the number of measurements necessary to obtain those improvements. Model performance is assessed by comparing time series of observed (snow pillow) and modeled snow water equivalent values, by comparing spatially distributed maps of observed (remotely sensed) and modeled snow depth, and by comparing fieldwork results from within the study area. The results demonstrate that few citizen science measurements are needed to obtain improvements in model performance, and these improvements are found in 62 % to 78 % of the ensemble simulations, depending on the model year. Model estimations of total water volume from a subregion of the study area also demonstrate improvements in accuracy after CSO measurements have been assimilated. These results suggest that even modest measurement efforts by citizen scientists have the potential to improve efforts to model snowpack processes in high mountain environments, with implications for water resource management and process-based snow modeling.

PR100 One-Year Progress Update: Preliminary Modeling Results and High-Resolution Solar and Wind Data Sets

The Puerto Rico Grid Resilience and Transitions to 100% Renewable Energy Study (PR100) is a 2-year study by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Grid Deployment Office and six national laboratories to comprehensively analyze stakeholder-driven pathways to Puerto Rico's clean energy future. In Year 1 of the study, the PR100 team rigorously modeled and analyzed scenarios that meet Puerto Rico's renewable energy targets and achieve short-term recovery goals and long-term energy resilience. This presentation will be showcased in the form of a public webinar, which summarizes PR100 progress in Year 1, provides considerations that can inform potential funding and implementation decisions by key federal and local agencies and stakeholders. The presentation follows the publication in July 2022 of a PR100 Six-Month Progress Update (in English and Spanish), as well as public webinars in February 2022 to kick off the study and in July 2022 to present the 6-month update. A final written report and web-based visuals will be published in late 2023. All publications and public events associated with the study will be available in Spanish and English. This report is also available in Spanish: https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy23osti/85201.pdf.

MicroBooNE BNB Electron Neutrino Overlay Sample (No Wire Info)

MicroBooNE samples are provided for collaborative development in two different formats: HDF5, targeting the broadest audience, and artroot, targeting users that are familiar with the software infrastructure of Fermilab neutrino experiments and more in general of HEP experiments. The HDF5 files are stored on Zenodo, together with a list of artroot files accessible with xrootd. This sample includes simulated interactions of neutrinos from the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB), overlaid on top of cosmic ray data. The sample is restricted to charged-current electron neutrino interactions within the argon active volume of the time projection chamber. The HDF5 files in this sample do not include the information at the wire waveform level ("NoWire" label), allowing for larger number of events to be included in the data set.More documentation, including detailed description of content, recipes, and example usage, at https://github.com/uboone/OpenSamples.Suggested text for acknowledgment is the following:We acknowledge the MicroBooNE Collaboration for making publicly available the data sets [data set DOIs] employed in this work. These data sets consist of simulated neutrino interactions from the Booster Neutrino Beamline overlaid on top of cosmic data collected with the MicroBooNE detector [2017 JINST 12 P02017].In addition, we request that software products resulting from the usage of the datasets are also made publicly available.

MicroBooNE BNB Inclusive Overlay Sample (With Wire Info)

MicroBooNE samples are provided for collaborative development in two different formats: HDF5, targeting the broadest audience, and artroot, targeting users that are familiar with the software infrastructure of Fermilab neutrino experiments and more in general of HEP experiments. The HDF5 files are stored on Zenodo, together with a list of artroot files accessible with xrootd. This sample includes simulated interactions of neutrinos from the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB), overlaid on top of cosmic ray data. The sample is inclusive, i.e. it includes all types of neutrinos and interactions, with relative abundance matching our nominal flux and cross section models. Interactions are simulated in in the whole cryostat volume. The HDF5 files in this sample include the information at the wire waveform level (after deconvolution and finding of regions of interest). As this information significantly increases the file size, this sample contains about 17% of the events of the corresponding sample without wire information.More documentation, including detailed description of content, recipes, and example usage, at https://github.com/uboone/OpenSamples.Suggested text for acknowledgment is the following:We acknowledge the MicroBooNE Collaboration for making publicly available the data sets [data set DOIs] employed in this work. Comparative Study of Differentially Private Data Synthesis Methods

When sharing data among researchers or releasing data for public use, there is a risk of exposing sensitive information of individuals in the data set. Data synthesis is a statistical disclosure limitation technique for releasing synthetic data sets with pseudo individual records. Traditional data synthesis techniques often rely on strong assumptions of a data intruder’s behaviors and background knowledge to assess disclosure risk. Differential privacy (DP) formulates a theoretical approach for a strong and robust privacy guarantee in data release without having to model intruders’ behaviors. Efforts have been made aiming to incorporate the DP concept in the data synthesis process. Here, we examine current DIfferentially Private Data Synthesis (DIPS) techniques for releasing individual-level surrogate data for the original data, compare the techniques conceptually and evaluate the statistical utility and inferential properties of the synthetic data via each DIPS technique through extensive simulation studies. Our work sheds light on the practical feasibility and utility of the various DIPS approaches, and suggests future research directions for DIPS.
