Engineering Structural Transitions in a Multilevel Molecular Switch via Intermolecular Coupling

Controlling molecular conformations with atomic precision is essential for advancing molecular functional electronics, as well as our understanding of molecular dynamics. While switching between bistable molecular conformers is common in nature, creating systems with multiple, addressable states remains synthetically challenging. Here, we demonstrate a bottom-up strategy in which intermolecular interactions give rise to multilevel functionality within a simple two-molecule assembly. Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we show that a pyrrolidine dimer on Cu(100) exhibits six distinct adsorption conformations, exceeding the four expected from two independent bistable units. This unusual complexity arises from the interplay between intermolecular van der Waals attraction and steric repulsion, which reshapes the potential energy landscape and changes a single high-energy transition into a sequential two-step pathway. Each step is driven by low-energy inelastic electron excitations, achieving a switching efficiency an order of magnitude higher than that of the monomer. Here, by tuning the bias voltage and tip–molecule distance, we achieve deterministic control over multiple stable states, establishing a general design principle for on-demand engineering of collective molecular behavior and energy-efficient multilevel molecular devices.

Non-volatile, solid state bistable electrical switch

A bistable switching element is made of a material whose electrical resistance reversibly decreases in response to intercalation by positive ions. Flow of positive ions between the bistable switching element and a positive ion source is controlled by means of an electrical potential applied across a thermal switching element. The material of the thermal switching element generates heat in response to electrical current flow therethrough, which in turn causes the material to undergo a thermal phase transition from a high electrical resistance state to a low electrical resistance state as the temperature increases above a predetermined value. Application of the electrical potential in one direction renders the thermal switching element conductive to pass electron current out of the ion source. This causes positive ions to flow from the source into the bistable switching element and intercalate the same to produce a non-volatile, low resistance logic state. Application of the electrical potential in the opposite direction causes reverse current flow which de-intercalates the bistable logic switching element and produces a high resistance logic state.

Computer simulation of a resonant dc link for advanced launch systems

The performance of a resonant dc link based actuator power system being built for an advanced launch system application is evaluated for a typical launch scenario using two end-to-end system simulations, one using a digital computer and the other using a hybrid computer. Aspects of system performance from the switching of the power electronic devices to the vehicle aerodynamics are addressed. Using these simulations, it is shown that the resonance dc link actuator adequately stabilize the vehicle against a wind gust during a launch.

Computer simulation of a 20-kHz power system for advanced launch systems

The performance of two 20-kHz actuator power systems being built for an advanced launch system are evaluated for typical launch senario using an end-to-end system simulation. Aspects of system performance ranging from the switching of the power electronic devices to the vehicle aerodynamics are represented in the simulation. It is shown that both systems adequately stabilize the vehicle against a wind gust during launch. However, it is also shown that in both cases there are bus voltage and current fluctuations which make system power quality a concern.

Integration of Passive Components for Spacecraft Avionics

The NASA roadmap outlining future deep space missions to Europa and other outer planetary destinations calls for continued reductions in the mass and volume of the spacecraft avionics. Spacecraft power electronics, including the power switches and converters, remain difficult to miniaturize due to the need for large numbers of discrete passive components such as resistors, capacitors, inductors and transformers. As part of the System-on-a-chip program at the Center for Integrated Space Microsystems and at the University of Arkansas, we are working to develop integrated or embedded passive components geared specifically for use in power management and distribution (PMAD) in future avionics over the next five to ten years. This will not only enable a scaling down of the power subsystems, but will make possible new architectures such as "distributed" PMAD. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

s-wave threshold in electron attachment - Observations and cross sections in CCl4 and SF6 at ultralow electron energies

The threshold photoionization method was used to study low-energy electron attachment phenomena in and cross sections of CCl4 and SF6 compounds, which have applications in the design of gaseous dielectrics and diffuse discharge opening switches. Measurements were made at electron energies from below threshold to 140 meV at resolutions of 6 and 8 meV. A narrow resolution-limited structure was observed in electron attachment to CCl4 and SF6 at electron energies below 10 meV, which is attributed to the divergence of the attachment cross section in the limit epsilon, l approaches zero. The results are compared with experimental collisional-ionization results, electron-swarm unfolded cross sections, and earlier threshold photoionization data.

High Mobility, High Carrier Density SnSe 2 Field‐Effect Transistors with Ultralow Subthreshold Swing and Gate‐Controlled Photoconductance Switching

2D and layered semiconductors are considered as promising electronic materials, particularly for applications that require high carrier mobility and efficient field-effect switching combined with mechanical flexibility. To date, however, the highest mobility has been realized primarily at low carrier concentration. Here, it is shown that few-layer/multilayer SnSe 2 gated by a solution top gate combines very high room-temperature electron mobility (up to 800 cm 2 V −1 s −1 ), along with large on-off current ratios (>10 5 ) and a subthreshold swing below the thermodynamic limit (50 mV per decade) in field-effect devices, at exceptionally large sheet carrier concentrations of ≈10 13 cm −2 . Observed mobility enhancements upon partial depletion of the channel point to near-surface defects or impurities as the mobility-limiting scattering centers. Under illumination, the resulting gap states give rise to gate-controlled switching between positive and negative photoconductance. The results qualify SnSe 2 as a promising layered semiconductor for flexible and wearable electronics, as well as for the realization of advanced approaches to photodetection.

High power ferrite microwave switch

A high power ferrite microwave switch was developed along with associated electronic driver circuits for operation in a spaceborne high power microwave transmitter in geostationary orbit. Three units were built and tested in a space environment to demonstrate conformance to the required performance characteristics. Each unit consisted of an input magic-tee hybrid, two non-reciprocal latching ferrite phase shifters, an out short-slot 3 db quadrature coupler, a dual driver electronic circuit, and input logic interface circuitry. The basic mode of operation of the high power ferrite microwave switch is identical to that of a four-port, differential phase shift, switchable circulator. By appropriately designing the phase shifters and electronic driver circuits to operate in the flux-transfer magnetization mode, power and temperature insensitive operation was achieved. A list of the realized characteristics of the developed units is given.

Q-switched laser prelase detection circuit

A compact electronic circuit was developed to detect prelasing in Q-swithed pulsed laser systems and once detected to shut down the laser before the next laser pulse occurs. The circuit is small, compact, and uses a minimum of components which makes it quite economical, thus readily lending itself to commercial applications. It can easily be incorporated into virtually any Q-switched laser system or reliability of a laser system by reducing a source of possible costly optical damage. The circuit operation and instrument requirements necessary to incorporate the circuit into a laser system are discussed.
