Celestial Topology, Symmetry Theories, and Evidence for a NonSUSY D3‐Brane CFT

Symmetry Theories (SymThs) provide a flexible framework for analyzing the global categorical symmetries of a D -dimensional QFT D in terms of a (D + 1)-dimensional bulk system SymTh D+1 . In QFTs realized via local string backgrounds, these SymThs naturally arise from dimensional reduction of the linking boundary geometry. To track possible time dependent effects we introduce a celestial generalization of the standard “boundary at infinity” of a SymTh. As an application of these considerations we revisit large N quiver gauge theories realized by spacetime filling D3-branes probing a non-supersymmetric orbifold $\mathbb{R}$ 6 /Γ. Comparing the imprint of symmetry breaking on the celestial geometry at small and large ‘t Hooft coupling we find evidence for an intermediate symmetry preserving conformal fixed point.

Celestial soft currents at one-loop and their OPEs

Conformally soft operators and their associated soft theorems on the celestial sphere encode the low energy behaviour of bulk scattering amplitudes. They lead to an infinite dimensional symmetry algebra of the celestial CFT at tree-level. In this paper, focusing our attention to Yang-Mills theory, we introduce new operators in the boundary celestial CFT in order to extend the definition of conformally soft currents to include one-loop effects. We then compute their OPEs with other operators in the theory. We also examine new subtleties that arise in defining OPEs of two conformally soft operators. We elucidate the connection between the new operators and loop corrected soft theorems in the bulk. Finally, we conclude by demonstrating how these operators fit into the framework of a logarithmic CFT.

Sparticle spectroscopy and dark matter in a U(1) B-L extension of MSSM

We consider a class of SUSY models in which the MSSM gauge group is supplemented with a gauged U(1) B-L symmetry and a global U(1) R symmetry. This extension introduces only electrically neutral states, and the new SUSY partners effectively double the number of states in the neutralino sector that now includes a blino (from B - L) and singlino from a gauge singlet superfield. If the DM density is saturated by a LSP neutralino, the model yields quite a rich phenomenology depending on the DM composition. The LSP relic density constraint provides a lower bound on the stop and gluino masses of about 3 TeV and 4 TeV respectively, which is testable in the near future collider experiments such as HL-LHC.

On triality defects in 2d CFT

We consider the triality fusion category discovered in the c = 1 Kosterlitz-Thouless theory. We analyze this fusion category using the tools from the group theoretical fusion category and compute the simple lines, fusion rules and F-symbols. We then studied the physical implication of this fusion category including deriving the spin selection rule, computing the asymptotic density of states of irreducible representations of the fusion category symmetries, and analyzing its anomaly and constraints under the renormalization group flow. There is another set of F-symbols for the fusion categories with the same fusion rule known in the literature. We find these two solutions are different as they lead to different spin selection rules. This gives a complete list of the fusion categories with the same fusion rule by the classification result in.

Globally baryon symmetric cosmology, GUT spontaneous symmetry breaking, and the structure of the universe

Grand unified theories (GUT) such as SU(5), with spontaneous symmetry breaking, can lead more naturally to a globally baryon symmetric big bang cosmology with a domain structure than to a totally asymmetric cosmology. The symmetry is broken at random in causally independent domains, favoring neither a baryon nor an antibaryon excess on a universal scale. Because of the additional freedom in the high-energy physics allowed by such GUT gauge theories, new observational tests may be possible. Arguments in favor of this cosmology and various observational tests are discussed.

Monte Carlo Global QCD Analyses of the Pion Parton Distribution Functions

As the lightest hadron, the pion presents itself as a dichotomy. While being the pseudo Goldstone boson associated with chiral symmetry breaking, it is simultaneously regarded as the lightest pseudoscalar meson typically composed of constituent quark and antiquark. As the chiral symmetry shares the same global symmetry as QCD, studying the pion and its internal structure is key in understanding one of the four fundamental forces of nature, namely the quantum chromodynamic strong interaction. We study the pion's parton distribution functions (PDFs), which are universal quantities that describe the structure of the pion in terms of its constituent quarks, antiquarks, and gluons. Our goal is to discover what the available data reveal for these universal quantities, namely the PDFs. Through the use of factorization theorems and perturbative QCD, we use Monte Carlo (MC) methods to extract the PDFs from the available Drell-Yan (DY) and leading neutron (LN) data. While the DY process involves two hadrons colliding, the LN electroproduction involves an electron beam incident on a target nucleon. We can constrain well the pion PDFs at large momentum fraction using DY data, and at low momentum fraction using LN data. We also use threshold resummation in the DY process to gather predictable higher order terms associated with the soft gluon radiation because their contributions to the cross section are nontrivial. In this dissertation, we parametrize the pion PDFs and fit those parameters to the available data. We make use of Bayesian inference and use MC techniques to sample the parameter space. Three sets of results are presented. We first extract the pion PDFs by fitting the DY and LN data. Then, we include transverse momentum dependent DY data in conjunction with the DY and LN data to extract the pion PDFs. Finally, we apply various methods of threshold resummation to the DY cross section and extract pion PDFs. The pion PDFs presented here are the first global QCD analyses performed as well as the first MC extracted pion PDFs, which are at the forefront of the pion PDF community.

Hidden conformal symmetry of the discrete series scalars in dS 2

In D dimensional de Sitter space, a scalar field has an infinite tower of special tachyonic mass values at which enhanced shift symmetries appear. After modding out by these shift symmetries, these fields correspond to the unitary irreducible representations of the de Sitter group known as the discrete series. We show that in D = 2 these theories have global conformal symmetry. In all but the massless case, these theories have no stress tensor and the conformal symmetry does not act in the usual way on the scalar field. We find the conformal symmetry by explicitly computing the correlators of the shift invariant local operators and showing that they take conformally invariant forms. We also demonstrate how these fields are self-dual in D = 2 , and dual to the shift invariant massive vector fields, which are therefore also conformally invariant. Integrating out beyond tree level and relativistic superfluids

We revisit certain subtleties of renormalization that arise when one derives a low-energy effective action by integrating out the heavy fields of a more complete theory. Usually these subtleties are circumvented by matching some physical observables, such as scattering amplitudes, but a more involved procedure is required if one is interested in deriving the effective theory to all orders in the light fields (but still to fixed order in the derivative expansion). As a concrete example, we study the U(1) Goldstone low-energy effective theory that describes the spontaneously broken phase of a $\phi$ 4 theory for a complex scalar. Working to lowest order in the derivative expansion, but to all orders in the Goldstones, we integrate out the radial mode at one loop and express the low-energy effective action in terms of the renormalized couplings of the UV completion. This yields the one-loop equation of state for the superfluid phase of (complex) $\phi$ 4 . We perform the same analysis for a renormalizable scalar SO(N) theory at finite chemical potential, integrating out the gapped Goldstones as well, and confirm that the effective theory for the gapless Goldstone exhibits no obvious sign of the original SO(N) symmetry.

Sn-modified BaTiO 3 thin film with enhanced polarization

Hybrid molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth of Sn-modified BaTiO 3 films was realized with varying domain structures and crystal symmetries across the entire composition space. Macroscopic and microscopic structures and the crystal symmetry of these thin films were determined using a combination of optical second harmonic generation (SHG) polarimetry and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). SHG polarimetry revealed a variation in the global crystal symmetry of the films from tetragonal (P4mm) to cubic (PM3¯m) across the composition range, x = 0 to 1 in BaTi 1–x Sn x O 3 (BTSO). STEM imaging shows that the long-range polar order observed when the Sn content is low (x = 0.09) transformed to a short-range polar order as the Sn content increased (x = 0.48). Consistent with atomic displacement measurements from STEM, the largest polarization was obtained at the lowest Sn content of x = 0.09 in Sn-modified BaTiO 3 as determined by SHG. Furthermore, these results agree with recent bulk ceramic reports and further identify this material system as a potential replacement for Pb-containing relaxor-based thin film devices.

Reversible non-volatile electronic switching in a near-room-temperature van der Waals ferromagnet

Abstract Non-volatile phase-change memory devices utilize local heating to toggle between crystalline and amorphous states with distinct electrical properties. Expanding on this kind of switching to two topologically distinct phases requires controlled non-volatile switching between two crystalline phases with distinct symmetries. Here, we report the observation of reversible and non-volatile switching between two stable and closely related crystal structures, with remarkably distinct electronic structures, in the near-room-temperature van der Waals ferromagnet Fe 5− δ GeTe 2 . We show that the switching is enabled by the ordering and disordering of Fe site vacancies that results in distinct crystalline symmetries of the two phases, which can be controlled by a thermal annealing and quenching method. The two phases are distinguished by the presence of topological nodal lines due to the preserved global inversion symmetry in the site-disordered phase, flat bands resulting from quantum destructive interference on a bipartite lattice, and broken inversion symmetry in the site-ordered phase.

Shift symmetries for p -forms and mixed symmetry fields on (A)dS

Massive fields on (anti) de Sitter space realize extended shift symmetries at particular values of their masses. We find these symmetries for all bosonic p-forms and mixed symmetry fields, in arbitrary spacetime dimension. These shift symmetric fields correspond to the missing longitudinal modes of mixed symmetry partially massless fields where the top row of the Young tableau is activated.

On the holographic dual of a topological symmetry operator

We study the holographic dual of a topological symmetry operator in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Symmetry operators arise from topological field theories localized on a subspace of the boundary conformal field theory spacetime. We use bottom up considerations to construct the topological sector associated with their bulk counterparts. In particular, by exploiting the structure of entanglement wedge reconstruction we argue that the bulk counterpart has a nontopological world volume action, i.e., it describes a dynamical object. As a consequence, we find that there are no global 𝑝-form symmetries for 𝑝 ≥ 0 in asymptotically anti–de Sitter spacetimes, which includes the case of noninvertible symmetries. Provided one has a suitable notion of subregion-subregion duality, our argument for the absence of bulk global symmetries applies to more general spacetimes. These considerations also motivate us to consider for general QFTs (holographic or not) the notion of lower-form symmetries, namely, (−𝑚)-form symmetries for 𝑚 ≥ 2.

Local positional and spin symmetry breaking as a source of magnetism and insulation in paramagnetic EuTi O 3

Here we consider theoretically the paramagnetic phases of EuTiO 3 that represent configurations created by two sets of microscopic degrees of freedom (m-DOFs): positional symmetry breaking due to octahedral rotations and magnetic symmetry breaking due to spin disorder. The effect of these sets of m-DOFs on the electronic structure and properties of the para phases is assessed by considering sufficiently large (super) cells with the required nominal global average symmetry, allowing, however, the $\mathcal{local}$ positional and magnetic symmetries to be lowered. We find that tendencies for local symmetry breaking can be monitored by following total energy lowering in mean-fieldlike density-functional theory, without recourse for strong correlation effects. While most nominally cubic ABO 3 perovskites are known for their symmetry breaking due to the B-atom sublattice, the case of f-electron magnetism in EuTiO 3 is associated with A-sublattice symmetry breaking and its coupling to structural distortions. We find that (i) paramagnetic $\mathcal{cubic}$ EuTiO 3 has an intrinsic tendency for both magnetic and positional symmetry breaking, while paramagnetic $\mathcal{tetragonal}$ EuTiO 3 has only magnetic symmetry lowering and no noticeable positional symmetry lowering with respect to low-temperature antiferromagnetic tetragonal phase. (ii) Properly modeled paramagnetic tetragonal and cubic EuTiO 3 have a nonzero local magnetic moment on each Eu ion, consistent with the experimental observations of local magnetism in the para phases of EuTiO 3 significantly above the Néel temperature. Interestingly, (iii) the local positional distortion modes in the short-range ordered para phases are inherited from the long-range ordered low-temperature antiferromagnetic ground-state phase.

Wrinkles in the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism and flavorful new physics

Abstract When the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism is used to explain the Standard Model flavor hierarchy, new physics couplings are also determined by the horizontal symmetry. However, additional symmetries or dynamics in the UV can sometimes lead to a departure from this naïve scaling for the new physics couplings. We show that an effective way to keep track of these changes is by using the new spurions of the U(3) 5 global flavor symmetry, where we parameterize extra suppression or enhancement factors, referred to aswrinkles, using the same power counting parameter as in the original Froggatt-Nielsen model. As a concrete realization, we consider two flavor spurions of theS 1 leptoquark, and demonstrate that wrinkles can be used to make an enhanced value of$$ \textrm{BR}\left({B}^{+}\to {K}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu}\right) $$ BR B + → K + ν ν ¯ consistent with other flavor observables. We also present example UV models that realize wrinkles, and comment on choosing consistent charges in ordinary Froggatt-Nielsen models without the typical monotonicity condition.

Exceptional scalar theories in de Sitter space

The special galileon and Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) theories are effective field theories of a single scalar field that have many interesting properties in flat space. These theories can be extended to all maximally symmetric spaces, where their algebras of shift symmetries are simple. We study aspects of the curved space versions of these theories: for the special galileon, we find a new compact expression for its Lagrangian in de Sitter space and a field redefinition that relates it to the previous, more complicated formulation. This field redefinition reduces to the well-studied galileon duality redefinition in the flat space limit. For the DBI theory in de Sitter space, we discuss the brane and dilaton formulations of the theory and present strong evidence that these are related by a field redefinition. We also give an interpretation of the symmetries of these theories in terms of broken diffeomorphisms of de Sitter space.

Shift Symmetries and AdS/CFT

Massive fields on anti-de Sitter (AdS) space enjoy galileon-like shift symmetries at particular values of their masses. We explore how these shift symmetries are realized through the boundary conformal field theory (CFT), at the level of the 2-point functions. In the alternate quantization scheme in which the dual conformal field gets the smaller Δ - conformal dimension, the shift symmetry is realized as a gauge symmetry in the dual CFT, so that only shift invariant operators are true conformal primary fields. In the standard quantization scheme the shift symmetry acts on the source, leading to Ward identities that take the form of integral constraints.

Spontaneously broken subsystem symmetries

We investigate the spontaneous breaking of subsystem symmetries directly in the context of continuum field theories by calculating the correlation function of charged operators. Our methods confirm the lack of spontaneous symmetry breaking in some of the existing continuum field theories with subsystem symmetries, as had previously been established based on a careful analysis of the spectrum. We present some novel continuum field theory constructions that do exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking whenever allowed by general principles. These interesting patterns of symmetry breaking occur despite the fact that all the theories we study are non-interacting.

Four no-go theorems on the existence of spin and orbital angular momentum of massless bosons

The past decades have seen substantial interest in the so-called orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light, driven largely by its diverse range of applications. However, there are fundamental theoretical issues with decomposing the angular momentum of massless particles, such as photons, into spin (SAM) and orbital angular momentum parts. While the angular momentum of massive particles has a natural splitting into the Wigner SAM and OAM, there are numerous proposed splittings for photons and no consensus about which is correct. Moreover, it has been shown that most of the proposed SAM and OAM operators do not satisfy the defining commutation relations of angular momentum operators and are thus not legitimate splittings. Here, we prove that it is generally impossible to split the total angular momentum operator of massless bosons, such as photons and gravitons, into spin and orbital parts. We prove two further generalizations of this result, showing that there are no SAM-OAM splittings even if (1) the SAM operator generates non-internal symmetries or (2) if one allows the SAM and OAM operators to generate non-SO(3) symmetries.
