Hybrid Position/Force Control of Robot Manipulators

In proposed method for task-oriented control of robot manipulator, position and force error signals for each task degree of freedom are used to calculate appropriate control parameters in task coordinates. Position and force error signals are transformed and summed to create drive signal for each actuator. New hybrid control technique does not require operator to supply complex transform matrices. Control trajectories are easily visualized in terms of task to be performed.

Dynamic stabilization methods for bilateral control of remote manipulation

This paper discusses and analyses several control strategies for generalized, bilateral master/slave manipulator systems. In these manipulators the two arms have different dynamic/kinematic properties which implies a more difficult control problem. Attention is focused on torque/force driven arms. Required performance for the necessary control computer(s) is discussed.

Testing of an End-Point Control Unit Designed to Enable Precision Control of Manipulator-Coupled Spacecraft

This paper presents an end-point control concept designed to enable precision telerobotic control of manipulator-coupled spacecraft. The concept employs a hardware unit (end-point control unit EPCU) that is positioned between the end-effector of the Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator System and the payload. Features of the unit are active compliance (control of the displacement between the end-effector and the payload), to allow precision control of payload motions, and inertial load relief, to prevent the transmission of loads between the end-effector and the payload. This paper presents the concept and studies the active compliance feature using a simulation and hardware. Results of the simulation show the effectiveness of the EPCU in smoothing the motion of the payload. Results are presented from initial, limited tests of a laboratory hardware unit on a robotic arm testbed at the l Space Flight Center. Tracking performance of the arm in a constant speed automated retraction and extension maneuver of a heavy payload with and without the unit active is compared for the design speed and higher speeds. Simultaneous load reduction and tracking performance are demonstrated using the EPCU.

Studies to design and develop improved remote manipulator systems

Remote manipulator control considered is based on several levels of automatic supervision which derives manipulator commands from an analysis of sensor states and task requirements. Principle sensors are manipulator joint position, tactile, and currents. The tactile sensor states can be displayed visually in perspective or replicated in the operator's control handle of perceived by the automatic supervisor. Studies are reported on control organization, operator performance and system performance measures. Unusual hardware and software details are described.

Supervisory control of remote manipulation: A preliminary evaluation

A system for supervisory control is described, and preliminary results are presented. Supervisory control, where control is traded between man and computer, offers benefits in the control of a remote manipulator. The system has the potential to accomplish sophisticated tasks. It is indicated that supervisory control yields lower task completion times and is preferred over manual control.

Sliding mode control method having terminal convergence in finite time

An object of this invention is to provide robust nonlinear controllers for robotic operations in unstructured environments based upon a new class of closed loop sliding control methods, sometimes denoted terminal sliders, where the new class will enforce closed-loop control convergence to equilibrium in finite time. Improved performance results from the elimination of high frequency control switching previously employed for robustness to parametric uncertainties. Improved performance also results from the dependence of terminal slider stability upon the rate of change of uncertainties over the sliding surface rather than the magnitude of the uncertainty itself for robust control. Terminal sliding mode control also yields improved convergence where convergence time is finite and is to be controlled. A further object is to apply terminal sliders to robot manipulator control and benchmark performance with the traditional computed torque control method and provide for design of control parameters.

A proposed remote manipulator system: A concept

System is described with variable ratio, mixed mode, bilateral, master-slave control. Manipulator arms consist of shoulder and elbow with two degrees of freedom, a wrist with three degrees of freedom, and terminal grasping device. Feedback is provided by TV cameras attached near shoulder, grasping device, and at end of shuttle opposite arm.

Adaptive hybrid position/force control of robotic manipulators

The problem of position and force control for the compliant motion of the manipulators is considered. The external force and the position of the end-effector are related by a second order impedance function. The force control problem is then translated into a position control problem. For that, an adaptive controller is designed to achieve the compliant motion. The design uses the Liapunov's direct method to derive the adaptation law. The stability of the process is guaranteed from the Liapunov's stability theory. The controller does not require the knowledge of the system parameters for the implementation, and hence is easy for applications.

Two measures of performance in a peg-in-hole manipulation task with force feedback

The results are described from two manipulators on a peg-in-hole task, which is part of a continued effort to develop models for human performance with remote manipulators. Task difficulty is varied by changing the diameter of the peg to be inserted in a 50 mm diameter hole. An automatic measuring system records the distance between the tool being held by the manipulator and the receptacle into which it is to be inserted. The data from repeated insertions are processed by computer to determine task times, accumulated distances, and trajectories. Experiments with both the MA-11 cable-connected master-slave manipulator common to hot cell work and the MA-23 servo-controlled manipulator (with and without force feedback) are described. Comparison of these results with previous results of the Ames Manipulator shows that force feedback provides a consistent advantage.

Control of robot manipulator compliance

Robotic assembly operations such as mating and fastening of parts are more successful if the robot manipulator compliance can be controlled so that various coordinates are free to comply with external constraints. This paper presents the design of a hybrid controller to provide active compliance to a six-degree-of-freedom robot built at NASA/GSFC using force and position feedback. Simulation results of a 2 degree-of-freedom model is presented and discussed.

Telerobotic control of a dextrous manipulator using master and six-DOF hand-controllers for space assembly and servicing tasks

Two studies were conducted evaluating methods of controlling a telerobot; bilateral force reflecting master controllers and proportional rate six degrees of freedom (DOF) hand controllers. The first study compared the controllers on performance of single manipulator arm tasks, a peg-in-the-hole task, and simulated satellite orbital replacement unit changeout. The second study, a Space Station truss assembly task, required simultaneous operation of both manipulator arms (all 12 DOFs) and complex multiaxis slave arm movements. Task times were significantly longer and fewer errors were committed with the hand controllers. The hand controllers were also rated significantly higher in cognitive and manual control workload on the two-arm task. The master controllers were rated significantly higher in physical workload. There were no significant differences in ratings of manipulator control quality.

Study and development of techniques for automatic control of remote manipulators

An overall conceptual design for an autonomous control system of remote manipulators which utilizes feedback was constructed. The system consists of a description of the high-level capabilities of a model from which design algorithms are constructed. The autonomous capability is achieved through automatic planning and locally controlled execution of the plans. The operator gives his commands in high level task-oriented terms. The system transforms these commands into a plan. It uses built-in procedural knowledge of the problem domain and an internal model of the current state of the world.

Multivariable PID Controller For Robotic Manipulator

Gains updated during operation to cope with changes in characteristics and loads. Conceptual multivariable controller for robotic manipulator includes proportional/derivative (PD) controller in inner feedback loop, and proportional/integral/derivative (PID) controller in outer feedback loop. PD controller places poles of transfer function (in Laplace-transform space) of control system for linearized mathematical model of dynamics of robot. PID controller tracks trajectory and decouples input and output.

Intelligent pipelined control architecture for remote robotic applications

A new pipelined architecture for autonomous and semiautonomous space robotics systems is described. The architecture uses new concepts which significantly facilitate the overall system performance and leads to an effective functional partitioning between base and remote parts of the system. The base system which is based on a set of parameterized primitives, provides detailed planning and the remote site provides final command binding and resource management. The primitives are then directed to the intelligent manipulation controllers that perform the required manipulation. A proof-of-principle implementation at the JPL Telerobotic laboratory demonstrated the practical efficiency of the pipelined architecture in the context of supervised autonomous robotics operations.
