CELSS Program Meeting

A meeting on the potential contributions of plant science to the goals of Controlled Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) research produced discussions that helped to focus on a variety of topics. In the area of volatiles and soluble organics, microbial activity, disease, and productivity, participants emphasized the need to know more about the consequences of closure for the growth of plants. Under nutrient delivery systems, the problems focus on the need to maintain a stable, optimum nutrient system. Lighting systems discussions emphasized unique methods of direct lighting and development of improved irradiation sources. Flight experiment opportunities were outlined by one speaker. Documentation of the Plant Growth Module was discussed. The last day's discussion focused on the organization of the research group to be involved in the development and use of a two to three cubic meter sealed chamber and ancillary equipment.

NASA MEVTV Program Working Group Meeting: Volcanism on Mars

The purpose of this working group meeting is to focus predominantly on volcanism on Mars, prior to considering the more complex issues of interactions between volcanism and tectonism or between volcanism and global or regional volatile evolution. It is also hoped that the topical areas of research identified will aid the planetary geology community in understanding volcanism on Mars and its relationship to other physical processes.

Flutter suppression using eigenspace freedoms to meet requirements

A constrained optimization methodology has been developed which allows specific use of eigensystem freedoms to meet design requirements. A subset of the available eigenvector freedoms was employed. The eigenvector freedoms associated with a particular closed-loop eigenvalue are coefficients of basis vectors which span the subspace in which that closed-loop vector must lie. Design requirements are included as a vector of inequality constraints. The procedure was successfully applied to develop an unscheduled controller which stabilizes symmetric flutter of an aeroelastic vehicle to a dynamic pressure 44 percent above the open-loop flutter point. The design process proceeded from full-state feedback to the inclusion of a full-order observer to the selection of an eighth-order controller which preserved the full-state sensitivity characteristics. Only a subset of the design freedoms was utilized (i.e., assuming full-state feedback only four out of 26 eigenvectors were used, and no variations were made in the closed-loop eigenvalues). Utilization of additional eigensystem freedoms could further improve the controller.

Summary of proceedings of the first meeting of the NASA Ames Simulator Sickness Steering Committee

A program of research to investigate simulator induced sickness has recently been initiated under the sponsorship of NASA Ames Research Center to coordinate efforts to investigate and eventually eliminate the problem of simulator sickness. As part of this program, a Simulator Sickness Steering Committee has been assembled, comprised of eighteen representatives from the Army, Air Force, Navy, NASA, NATO, academia, and industry. The proceedings of the first meeting of the NASA Ames Simulator Sickness Steering Committee are summarized and discussed.

Optical technology for microwave applications IV; Proceedings of the Meeting, Orlando, FL, Mar. 28, 29, 1989

Among the topics discussed at the meeting are high-speed laser and electrooptical technologies, detectors and detector arrays, microwave delay lines, and photon-microwave interactions. In addition, optical link applications are discussed, along with electronic warfare receivers and acoustooptical signal processing. Emphasis is placed on laser diode technology, direct modulation of laser diodes, external electrooptical laser modulation techniques, and microwave fiber-optic delay lines. Attention is given to such optical link applications as multigigahertz links as well as to signal processing for phased-array antennas and channelized microwave receiver technologies.

A materials scientist in space - 1990 MRS Fall Meeting Plenary Address

An edited version of astronaut Bonnie J. Dunbar's Plenary Address at the 1990 MRS Fall Meeting is presented. The Shuttle program is briefly reviewed with emphasis on the microgravity environment experiments conducted aboard the Columbia in January 1991. In particular, protein crystal growth experiments resulted in growing morphologically uniform crystals with sizes in the 400-500 micron range are discussed. The Long-Duration Exposure Facility intended to study the effects of atomic oxygen and the ultraviolet light environment in low earth orbit on materials has been successfully retrieved. Some research areas of future flights are noted.
