Controlling Cation-Cation Interactions in Uranyl Coordination Dimers by Varying the Length of the Dicarboxylate Linker

The chemistry of linear uranyl(V/VI) dioxo cations, [O yl –U–O yl ] +/2+ , is dominated by coordination of uranium in the equatorial plane. Effects of this constraint were evaluated by experiment and theory for gas-phase mixed-valence U V/VI coordination dimers in which uranyl moieties are linked by alkyl dicarboxylates, [(UO 2 + )(UO 2 2+ )(OOC-(CH 2 ) n-2 -COO 2– ) 2 ] – (n = 3–12). Faster O 2 -addition to dimers with short linkers n = 3 and 4, vs. n ≥ 5, suggests a structural difference. Computed structures with the shortest linkers have bridging dicarboxylates and nearly parallel, non-interacting uranyls. Longer linkers, n = 5–7, accommodate uranyl orientations with distinct U V –U VI end-on cation-cation interactions (CCIs), whereby Lewis base O yl from U V coordinates to the acid U VI , denoted as U V O yl ···U VI . The dimer structure for n = 8 has a U V –U VI side-on diamond-shape CCI, with U V O yl ···U VI and U VI O yl ···U V interactions. Addition of O 2 to the n = 4 and 5 dimers yields [(UO22+)2(OOC-(CH2)n-2-COO2–)2(O2–)]–, with U V oxidized to U VI and O 2 reduced to O 2 – . Whereas O 2 can associate to and oxidize the exposed U V center for dimers with n = 3 and 4, the more crowded U V site in the CCI structures inhibits O 2 addition. Finally, the results demonstrate rational structural control of uranyl-uranyl bonding and reactivity in small coordination complexes.

Determine the coordination of Al and Si of Fe-rich fly ash: The challenge in NMR and how we probe its heterogeneity using X-ray spectromicroscopy

Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) coupled with ptychographic imaging at Al and Si K-edge is a new probe to the microscale chemistry of heterogenous materials. Here, the combined techniques are applied to study local coordination environment of Fe-rich fly ash (FA). Ptychographic imaging at Al K- and Si K-edge highlights the fine Al- and Si-rich morphological features, respectively, at 6 nm pixel resolution. STXM visualizes the inter- and intra-particle variations in the silicate polymerization degree and two types of Al coordination environment in FA. The Si K-edge of SiO4 connected with four-fold coordinated Al is higher than SiO4 sharing oxygen with six-fold coordinated Al. The result is consistent with bulk nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy measurement of the Fe-rich sample which, however, is sensitive to paramagnetic Fe and time-consuming. Here, we demonstrate that the combined method has great potential in the studies of chemically heterogenous aluminosilicates.

Decisions and coordination of retailer-led low-carbon supply chain under altruistic preference

A low-carbon supply chain formed by a dominant retailer and a small and medium-sized manufacturer (SMM) is considered. Because the SMM faces the high cost pressure of adopting carbon emission reduction (CER) technologies, the retailer may take an altruistic preference for the long-term sustainability of the chain. Three decision-making models, centralized, decentralized without altruistic preference, and decentralized with altruistic preference, are constructed to compare decisions and profits of both parties. Since neither decentrailized models can lead to a coordinated solution that is incentive compitable, a coordination contract, referred to as the cost sharing contract with altruistic preference, is proposed. Numerical study shows that the altruistic preference can help increase the SMM's profit and system efficiency but decrease the retailer's profit. The coordination contract requires the retailer to adjust the unit profit and share more than half of the CER cost. Finally, it is found that the wholesale price is the lowest in the coordination contract and the comparison of unit profit depends on the coefficient of CER cost.

Assessing heat resilience coordination in networks of plans

Networks of plans coordinating on hazard mitigation can limit losses. We offer a novel network analysis methodology to investigate how networks of plans explicitly coordinate, and the purpose and nature of coordination. We illustrate the method using networks of plans shaping heat resilience in seven Arizona cities. The network analysis can help planners to identify influential plans that need to be high quality, peripheral plans, and potential governance silos. Furthermore, investigation into plan roles offers an ontological lens into how plans network, consult, and share information. The nature of coordination varies by purpose. General plans are cited for goals, while hazard mitigation plans are referenced for heat fact base. Transportation plans cite goals and fact base in other transportation plans, but rarely cite other plan types. Furthermore, these findings will help planners to consider the roles and merits of different plans while integrating hazards across the next generation of networks of plans.

Community-Based Transactive Coordination Mechanism for Enabling Grid Edge Systems

The changing landscape of the electricity industry, characterized by a surge in distributed energy resources (DERs) and proactive customers, necessitates practical solutions for coordinated operations especially at the distribution-level. This paper introduces a community-based transactive coordination mechanism designed to incentivize customers for providing localized and system-level services reflected through real-time prices. The work presents a bidding approach for communities with DERs, such as solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage systems (BESS), to formulate their price-responsiveness for retail energy coordination, emphasizing a community-centric model. By sending bidding curves to a third-party, the mechanism enables customers with DER assets to actively participate in localized coordination with the load serving entity (LSE), thereby supplementing each other’s and even the utilities needs through a shared energy economy. The proposed transactive mechanism is implemented leveraging a co-simulation framework that integrates a distribution grid simulator and Python-based agents for performance evaluation. Collaboration with a local utility to access real distribution feeder models and consumption profiles yields simulation results demonstrating the potential to reduce costs by 12\% for communities with DERs like PV and BESS.

Secure State Estimation with Asynchronous Measurements for Coordinated Cyber Attack Detection in Active Distribution Systems

Coordinated cyber attacks tamper with measurement data to disrupt the situational awareness of active distribution systems. Various sensors report measurements asynchronously at different rates, which introduces challenges during state estimation. In addition, this forces cyber intruders to exert greater effort to compromise multiple communication channels and launch coordinated attacks. Therefore, multi-channel and asynchronous measurements could be harnessed to develop more secure cyber defense strategies. In this paper, a prediction-correction-based multi-rate observer is designed to exploit the value of asynchronous measurements for the detection of coordinated false data injection (FDI) attacks. First, a time-function-dependent prediction-correction strategy is proposed to adjust the sampling interval for each sensor’s measurement. Then, an observer is designed based on the trade-off between estimation error and the optimal period of the most recent sampling instant, with the convergence of estimation error with the maximum permitted sampling interval. Moreover, the conditions for exponential stability are developed using the Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional technique. Next, a coordinated FDI attack detection strategy is developed based on the dual nonlinear minimization problem. The proposed attack detection and secure state estimation strategies are tested on the IEEE 13-node system. Simulation results show that these schemes are effective in enhancing attack detection based on asynchronous measurements or compromised data.

Minimal Coordinate Formulation of Contact Dynamics in Operational Space

In recent years, complementarity techniques have been developed for modeling non-smooth contact and collision dynamics problems for multi-link robotic systems. Normally, in this approach, a linear complementarity problem (LCP) is set up using 6n non-minimal coordinates for a system with n links together with all the unilateral constraints and inter-link bilateral constraints on the system. In this paper, we use operational space dynamics to develop a complementarity formulation for contact and collision dynamics that uses minimal coordinates. The use of such non-redundant coordinates results in much smaller size LCP problems and the automatic enforcement of the inter-link bilateral constraints. Furthermore, we exploit operational space low-order computational algorithms to overcome some of the bottlenecks in using minimal coordinates.

Time-Critical Coordination of UAS with Non-Ideal Autopilots under Lossy Communication Networks

In this presentation we will explore several distributed consensus algorithms developed to maintain coordination among a fleet of heterogeneous UAS subject to external disturbances. An overview of the network assumptions and autopilot performance bounds required to meet the coordination objective will be provided. In particular, we will leverage passivity-based stability conditions for bidirectional networks that require the communication graph to be connected in an integral sense, but may fail to connect pointwise in time during the entire mission. Non-ideal autopilots that can only track a desired speed profile with a prescribed precision induce an error in vehicle coordination. The autopilot performance bounds will be propagated through the coordination dynamics to understand the limits introduced by autopilots.

Coordination between Federated Scheduling and Conflict Resolution in UAM Operations

This work proposes a federated scheduling algorithm and explores two mechanisms for coordinating federated scheduling and conflict resolution functions - two core traffic management functions in urban air mobility operations. A federated scheduling algorithm is first developed, together with data that needs to be shared among schedulers. Two mechanisms for coordinating scheduling and conflict resolution functions are then introduced and studied as conflicts in high-density operations may not be completely resolved by conflict resolution function alone. The first coordination mechanism is constructed based on the arrival scheduler at the destination and another one utilizes the departure scheduler at the origin. Experiments and trade space studies are conducted to compare these two mechanisms using fast-time traffic simulations. Results show that both mechanisms perform well in coordinating scheduling and conflict resolution functions and helping resolve all potential conflicts. Experiments also show that with proper parameter selection, both mechanisms can achieve better efficiency (less delay) while maintaining zero losses of separation.

Tailoring the Coordination Micro‐Environment in Nanotraps for Efficient Platinum/Palladium Separation

Abstract Recovering platinum group metals from secondary resources is crucial to meet the growing demand for high‐tech applications. Various techniques are explored, and adsorption using porous materials has emerged as a promising technology due to its efficient performance and environmental beingness. However, the challenge lies in effectively recovering and separating individual platinum group metals (PGMs) given their similar chemical properties. Herein, a breakthrough approach is presented by sophisticatedly tailoring the coordination micro‐environment in a series of aminopyridine‐based porous organic polymers, which enables the creation of platinum‐specific nanotraps for efficient separation of binary PGMs (platinum/palladium). The newly synthesized POP‐o2NH 2 ‐Py demonstrates record uptakes and selectivity toward platinum over palladium, with the amino groups adjacent to the pyridine moieties being vital in improving platinum binding performance. Further breakthrough experiments underline its remarkable ability to separate platinum and palladium. Spectroscopic analysis reveals that POP‐o2NH 2 ‐Py offers a more favorable coordination fashion to platinum ions compared to palladium ions owing to the greater interaction between N and Pt 4+ and stronger intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the amino groups and four coordinating chlorines at platinum. These findings underscore the importance of fine‐tuning the coordination micro‐environment of nanotraps through subtle modifications that can greatly enhance the selectivity toward the desired metal ions.

Bioinspired Activation of N 2 on Asymmetrical Coordinated Fe Grafted 1T MoS 2 at Room Temperature

Inspired by the nitrogen fixation process on MoFe nitrogenase, asymmetrical coordinated Fe grafted onto 1T MoS 2 were successfully synthesized. The unique electron -rich structure with asymmetrical coordination made the 1T Fe 0.1 Mo 0.9 S 2 layered material actively react with water and dinitrogen at room temperature and atmosphere pressure. Subsequently, ammonia can be produced with a yield of 800 pmol (NH 4 + ) g -1 (12.5% yield in mole). The activation, fixation and reduction of dinitrogen were confirmed by isotopically labeled experiments. The location and the specific coordination environment of grafted Fe in Fe-Mo-S were further determined by X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis. Our work demonstrates that the nitrogen fixation and reduction for ammonia at room temperature without any chemical and electrochemical assistance is distinctly different from traditional bionic -inspired nitrogen fixation process. The mechanism of the activation and reduction of N 2 was further investigated by density functional theory calculation and Raman spectra. Compared with 1T MoS 2 , the enriched electron nature and asymmetrical coordination of Fe in Fe-Mo-S materials play a critical role in the bioinspired activation of N 2 at ambient condition.

Developing a strategy for the national coordinated soil moisture monitoring network

Soil moisture is a critical land surface variable, affecting a wide variety of climatological, agricultural, and hydrological processes. Determining the current soil moisture status is possible via a variety of methods, including in situ monitoring, remote sensing, and numerical modeling. Although all of these approaches are rapidly evolving, there is no cohesive strategy or framework to integrate these diverse information sources to develop and disseminate coordinated national soil moisture products that will improve our ability to understand climate variability. The National Coordinated Soil Moisture Monitoring Network initiative has developed a national strategy for network coordination with NOAA's National Integrated Drought Information System. The strategy is currently in review within NOAA, and work is underway to implement the initial milestones of the strategy. This update reviews the goals and steps being taken to establish this national-scale coordination for soil moisture monitoring in the United States.

Benchmarking Coordination Number Prediction Algorithms on Inorganic Crystal Structures

Coordination numbers and geometries form a theoretical framework for understanding and predicting materials properties. Algorithms to determine coordination numbers automatically are increasingly used for machine learning and automatic structural analysis. In this work, we introduce MaterialsCoord, a benchmark suite containing 56 experimentally-derived crystal structures (spanning elements, binaries, and ternary compounds) and their corresponding coordination environments as described in the research literature. We also describe CrystalNN, a novel algorithm for determining near neighbors. We compare CrystalNN against 7 existing near-neighbor algorithms on the MaterialsCoord benchmark, finding CrystalNN to perform similarly to several well-established algorithms. For each algorithm, we also assess computational demand and sensitivity towards small perturbations that mimic thermal motion. Finally, we investigate the similarity between bonding algorithms when applied to the Materials Project database. Finally, we expect that this work will aid the development of coordination prediction algorithms as well as improve structural descriptors for machine learning and other applications.

Synthesis of an Isostructural Series of 12-Coordinate Lanthanide Nitrate Hybrid Double Perovskites with Cubic Symmetry

In efforts to study the periodic chemical properties of the rare earth elements and their structural chemistry, a hybrid double perovskite phase A 2 B'BX 6 with the formula ((CH 3 ) 4 N) 2 KLn(NO 3 ) 6 (Ln = La–Lu, Y ex. Pm) was synthesized that crystallizes in the cubic space group, $Fm$$\bar{3}$$m$. This series was obtained via evaporative crystallization from a mixture of Ln(NO 3 ) 3 , KNO 3 , and (CH 3 ) 4 N·NO 3 in a 1:1:2 ratio from either H 2 O or 4.0 M HNO 3 . In this double perovskite structure, the B site containing the lanthanide ion is coordinated by six bidentate nitrate ligands, with the distal N$=$O oxygen atoms coordinating the potassium on the B' site in an octahedral six-coordinate environment. The two-remaining charge-compensating (CH 3 ) 4 N + cations occupy the interstitial voids in the lattice on the A site. This periodic series was characterized via single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, IR, and Raman spectroscopy. Emission spectra of the Eu complex indicate a phase transition to trigonal symmetry upon cooling. In conclusion, this series is unique as it represents a rare isostructural series spanning the entirety of the rare earth elements excluding promethium with homoleptic 12-coordinate rare earth metal ions.

Trickier than It Looks: Isomerization between Five- and Six-Coordinated Zinc in Heterometallic Li 2 Zn 2 Molecule

This report describes the synthesis and characterization of two hetero bi metallic Li–Zn coordination isomers [Li 2 Zn 2 (tbaoac) 6 ] (tbaoac = tert -butyl acetoacetato) that have been isolated separately by the same stoichiometric reaction run in different organic solvents. The 6-coordinated zinc isomer ( 6-Zn ) was synthesized in acetone with high yield, while the 5-coordinated one ( 5-Zn ) was readily obtained from ethanol. The 5-Zn isomer has a low solubility in organic solvents such as alkanes and haloalkanes, while its 6-Zn counterpart exhibits a good solubility in almost all common solvents. Two isomeric molecules feature similar centrosymmetric tetranuclear cyclic assemblies, which are different in their arrangement of tbaoac ligands. While all ligands act as μ 2 -type in the structure of 5-Zn , the two tbaoac groups chelating Li appear as μ 3 -type in 6-Zn , thus providing an additional coordination for Zn ions. However, the real structural transformation between these isomers was shown to be more complex than simply making or breaking a couple of Zn–O bonds. X-ray single-crystal structure analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, multinuclear NMR, DART mass spectrometry, ICP-OES analysis, and TGA have been employed for the characterization of the isomers. The combination of powder X-ray diffraction and 1 H NMR investigation revealed that 6-Zn isomer can be quantitatively transformed to 5-Zn in ethanol, while the reverse conversion instantly takes place in acetone.

Quantifying the Correlation between Coordination Chemistry, Interfacial Formation, and Electrochemical Performances for Mg Battery Electrolytes

Here, the rise of magnesium batteries as promising post-Li-ion energy storage technologies has sparked considerable attention toward understanding the fundamental aspects of coordination chemistry concerning Mg cations in multivalent electrolytes. This exploration includes investigating how coordination influences crucial electrolyte properties like solubility, electroreduction stability, and the formation of the interphase, all of which are pivotal for practical battery applications. Despite recent progress in developing a few functional electrolytes, a comprehensive understanding of the solvation structure that can facilitate efficient Mg deposition performance and the formulation of general design rules based on the solvation structure is still lacking. In our study, we endeavor to establish a connection between solvent and anion interactions with Mg 2+ , interface formation, and cycling performance through a series of organic ether solvents (tetrahydrofuran, glyme, diglyme, and triglyme) and amine solvents (dimethylamine, 3-methoxypropylamine, and dimethoxyethylamine). Our findings reveal a distinct coordination trend for solvent/Mg 2+ and (Mg-TFSI):solvent across various solvents, which dictates the extent of ion pairing for TFSI salts with increasing solvent molecule size and denticity. The solvated species in the bulk electrolyte across different solvents lead to diverse interfacial chemistries with varying decomposition components. We also explore the cycling efficiency as well as Mg deposition overpotentials for different solvents. A correlation analysis was conducted to assess the interplay between the structure and performance. Lastly, we apply the insights gained from these results to tailor the relative anion/Mg 2+ coordination structures using cosolvent systems, aiming for improved cell performance.
