Visual examination apparatus

An automated visual examination apparatus for measuring visual sensitivity and mapping blind spot location is described. The apparatus includes a projection system for displaying to a patient a series of visual stimuli, a response switch enabling him to indicate his reaction to the stimuli, and a recording system responsive to both the visual stimuli per se and the patient's response. The recording system provides a correlated permanent record of both stimuli and response from which a substantive and readily apparent visual evaluation can be made.

Meteoroid activity on the lunar surface from the Surveyor 3 sample examination.

The Surveyor 3 television camera shroud and polished aluminum tube, retrieved as a result of the Apollo 12 mission after 2.5 years on the lunar surface, were examined for evidence of meteoroid impact. Resulting estimates of the meteoroid flux in the lunar vicinity are shown to be in good agreement with the Lunar Orbiter penetration rates. In addition, the relationship between a derived lunar-surface meteoroid cumulative-flux model and the comparable near-earth model is discussed in the light of theoretical predictions. It is shown that the effect of the gravitational field of the earth on the near-earth environment was greater than previously predicted.

Study of excess Fe metal in the lunar fines by magnetic separation, Moessbauer spectroscopy, and microscopic examination.

A simple and convenient method of making quantitative magnetic separations has been applied to the lunar fines. The fractions obtained form groups containing distinctively different particle types; thus, it appears that magnetic separation in itself many be a useful way of characterizing lunar fines. Moessbauer studies of fines 10084 show that the metal cannot contain more than about 1.5% Ni, implying that by far the bulk of the metal results from reduction rather than from direct meteoritic addition. Microscopic examination of magnetic separates from 15101 fines suggests that reduction of Fe accompanies every major impact event on the moon.

Examination of T-111 clad uranium nitride fuel pins irradiated up to 13,000 hours at a clad temperature of 990 C

The examination of 27 fuel pins irradiated for up to 13,000 hours at 990 C is described. The fuel pin clad was a tantalum alloy with uranium nitride as the nuclear fuel. Two nominal fuel pin diameters were tested with a maximum burnup of 2.34 atom percent. Twenty-two fuel pins were tested for fission gas leaks; thirteen pins leaked. Clad ductility tests indicated clad embrittlement. The embrittlement is attributed to hydrogen from an n,p reaction in the fuel. Fuel swelling was burnup dependent, and the amount of fission gas release was low, generally less than 0.5 percent. No incompatibilities between fuel, liner, and clad were in evidence.

Further examination of pilot instrument scanning data and development of a new link value estimator

Pilot instrument scanning data collected during simulated transport instrument landing approaches is examined. Deterministic features of random pilot instrument scanning behavior are confirmed to be: transitions in point of eye fixation which originate and terminate on the same instrument are rare; and transitions in point of eye fixation which originate on one secondary instrument and terminate on another secondary instrument are rare. Link value estimators are developed using statistics and these experimental facts. The result has a special significance when there is but a single primary instrument, a flight director. The result is used to simplify the iterative computational procedure of STI's display theory to a non-iterative procedure for the flight director case.

Examination of the influence of coatings on thin superalloy sections. Volume 1: Description and analysis

The effects of an aluminide coating and of section thickness were investigated on two cast nickel-base superalloys. Cast section thickness ranged from 0.038 cm to 0.15 cm. Simulated engine exposures in a jet fuel burner rig with cyclic air cooling were studied. The effects of surface machining before coating and re-machining and re-coating after exposures were examined. The properties evaluated included tensile strength, stress rupture, high-cycle mechanical fatigue, and thermal fatigue. A metallurgical analysis was made of the microstructures of the coated and uncoated alloy.

Results of eye examination

Five pocket mice (Perognathus longimembris) were flown on Apollo XVII, and four survived. All the eyes, except one eye from the dead flight mouse, were examined histologically. In the four surviving mice, a total of five cosmic-ray particles which had registered in the subscalp particle detectors had trajectories that intersected the eyes. Four of them (Z = 6.9 for three of the particles and Z greater than or equal to 10 for the fourth) most likely went through the head before reaching the particle detector, while the thindown direction of the fifth (Z greater than or equal to 10) was not determinable. The retinas of the flight animals were found free from histological alterations such as might have been expected from encounters with cosmic-ray particles.

Experimental examination of similarity measures and preprocessing methods used for image registration

The criterion used to measure the similarity between images and thus find the position where the images are registered is examined. The three similarity measures considered are the correlation coefficient, the sum of the absolute differences, and the correlation function. Three basic types of preprocessing are then discussed: taking the magnitude of the gradient of the images, thresholding the images at their medians, and thresholding the magnitude of the gradient of the images at an arbitrary level to be determined experimentally. These multitemporal registration techniques are applied to remote imagery of agricultural areas.

Surface examination of small particles

Electron-microscopy specimen-preparation technique is used to study micron size particles. Process involves coating particles with vacuum-evaporated carbon, dissolving particles in solvent, then examining residue. Process is applicable to study of catalysts, nucleation and growth of metal oxides, and to determine chemical nature of lubricated surfaces after wear has occurred.

Comparison of linear inversion methods by examination of the duality between iterative and inverse matrix methods

Linear numerical inversion methods applied to atmospheric remote sounding generally can be categorized in two ways: (1) iterative, and (2) inverse matrix methods. However, these two categories are not unrelated; a duality exists between them. In other words, given an iterative scheme, a corresponding inverse matrix method exists, and conversely. This duality concept is developed for the more familiar linear methods. The iterative duals are compared with the classical linear iterative approaches and their differences analyzed. The importance of the initial profile in all methods is stressed. Calculations using simulated data are made to compare accuracies and to examine the dependence of the solution on the initial profile.

Apparatus for use in examining the lattice of a semiconductor wafer by X-ray diffraction

An improved apparatus for examining the crystal lattice of a semiconductor wafer utilizing X-ray diffraction techniques was presented. The apparatus is employed in a method which includes the step of recording the image of a wafer supported in a bent configuration conforming to a compound curve, produced through the use of a vacuum chuck provided for an X-ray camera. The entire surface thereof is illuminated simultaneously by a beam of incident X-rays which are projected from a distant point-source and satisfy conditions of the Bragg Law for all points on the surface of the water.

A critical examination of expansion tunnel performance

An experimental study of the performance of the expansion tunnel for various test gases and range of quiescent acceleration section and nozzle pressure, nozzle geometric area ratio, and nozzle axial station has been performed. Flow diagnostics used to examine expansion tunnel flow characteristics were time histories and profiles of pitot pressure and axial component of flow velocity. The purpose of this study was to determine experimentally what limitations might restrict predicted operational flexibility and the advantages and disadvantages of this mode of operation as compared to the expansion tube. Results are presented which demonstrate the expansion tunnel offers several advantages over the expansion tube, but the severity of the disadvantages of the tunnel makes the expansion tube mode of operation the more desirable for performing hypersonic-hypervelocity aerothermodynamic studies of proposed entry configurations.

An examination of a group-velocity criterion for the breakdown of an idealized vortex flow

The phenomenon of vortex breakdown is believed to be associated with a finite amplitude wave that has become trapped at the critical or breakdown location. The conditions at which the propagating waves become trapped at a certain axial location were examined by use of a group-velocity criterion implied by Landahl's general theory of wave trapping. An ideal vortex having constant vorticity and uniform axial velocity at the inlet of a slowly diverging duct was studied. The linear wave propagation analysis is applied to the base flow at several axial stations for several values of the ratio of swirl velocity to axial velocity at the inlet of the divergent duct, assuming a locally parallel flow. The dipsersion relations and hence the group velocities of both the symmetric (n = 0) and asymmetric modes (n = + or - 1) were investigated. The existence of a critical state in the flow (at which the group velocity vanishes), and its relationship to the stagnation point on the axis of the duct and to the occurrence of an irregular singularity in the equations governing wave propagation in the flow field are discussed.

A systems examination of the opportunities of coal for California

Because of decreasing availability of petroleum fuels and natural gas, it is imperative that alternative means be developed for meeting demands. The options available for importing energy derived from coal are examined. These include: (1) electric power generated from coal; (2) coal gasification near the mine site for conversion to substitute natural gas or liquid products such as methanol or hydrocarbons; and (3) converting the coal directly to liquid hydrocarbons similar to a synthetic crude oil. Comment is made on the long lead times required between conception and completion of facilities of this type. Because of political and economic impediments, excessive delays have resulted in cancellation of projects. The need for statesmen and citizens with vision and courage to act is summarized.

Examination of Lambertian and Non-lambertian Models for Simulating the Topographic Effect on Remotely Sensed Data

As a preliminary step to developing a technique to eliminate the topographic effect from remotely sensed data, two radiance simulation models were examined and compared. A Lambertian and a non-Lambertian model were tested using hand-held radiometer measurements from a uniform surface at different slope angle aspect orientations. Linear correlation coefficients for the non-Lambertian model and the field spectra were calculated to be greater than 0.92 for all cases; whereas correlation coefficients for the Lambertian model ranged from 0.06 to 0.98. An assumption regarding an empirical constant within the non-Lambertian equation was found to be invalid and the model was improved by using subsets of the data to derive the empirical value.
