Friction Modifier Using Adherent Metallic Multilayered or Mixed Element Layer Conversion Coatings

A process for creating conversion coatings and spin, drawing, and extrusion finishes for surfaces, wherein the conversion coatings and spin, drawing, and extrusion finishes contain potassium, phosphorus, nitrogen, and one or more non-alkaline metals and/or one or more metalloids. The process comprises forming an aqueous solution of water, phosphoric acid or sulfuric acid, ammonium hydroxide, an alkali metal hydroxide, and one or more non-alkaline metals and/or one or more metalloids. The aqueous solution forms an anti-friction multilayer conversion and/or mixed element coating or a spin, drawing, and extrusion finish on a surface when applied to the surface, either directly without the use of applied external electromotive force, or as an additive in lubricating fluids.

MIL-HDBK-338: Environmental Conversion Table Correction

In reliability analysis, especially for launch vehicles, limited data is frequently a problem. Component data from other environments must be used. MIL-HBK-338 has a matrix showing the conversation between environments. Due to round off the conversions are not commutative, converting from A to B will not equal converting from B to A. MIL-HDBK-338-Environmental Conversion Table Correction

In reliability analysis for space launch vehicles, limited data is frequently a challenge due to the pure number of launches. A common solution is to use surrogate historical data of similar components from other industries (military data). The operating environment of the common data may be different from that of the necessary target analysis. The military electronic design handbook (MIL-HDBK-338) has a table for converting Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) data from one environment to another. However, the table has some discrepancies and rounding of complementary conversions; namely going from environment A to B does not given the same result as going from B to A. This presentation will show the discrepancies in the original conversation table, the greater than expected magnitude, the problem with the updated published table and a suggested corrected table to reference when doing MTBF data environment conversion.

Plasma Assisted Trash Conversion with CO2 Carrier Gas

A sub-atmospheric plasma solid-to-gas conversion system operating under 500 W was tested to be viable for waste conversion to a gaseous state without the use of a feedstock gas as shown in previous plasma torch works. This manuscript lays the groundwork into the feasibility of low-pressure solid-to-gas conversion, reaction chemistry of the by-product gases, and power consumption. The results have shown the possibility of gasification at reduced pressures without the consumable use of a feedstock carrier gas in previous studies. Thus far, the percent gasification averaged around 36% in pre-pellet trials, with the system being far from optimized. The products include H2, CO2, CO, C2H4, and C2H6. Hydrogen production was higher as expected in a CO2-like environment once the gasification process begins. The energy required to generate the plasma was on the order of that previously reported at atmospheric pressures. The ability to eliminate the need for any consumables that were required in previous iterations greatly improves the cost and operational logistics of plasma gasification equipment. Although further development of the system is needed for increased gasification percentages, elimination of useable commodities greatly favors such a system for trash management beyond low Earth orbit.

Insertion Loss of a Multi-Plane Light Conversion Device with Few Mode Fiber Outputs Under Atmospheric Conditions

A key challenge of photon counting optical communication is delivering light with atmospherically distorted wavefronts from the telescope to detectors efficiently. When using fiber coupled single photon detectors, the efficiency of the transmittance is constrained by the modes supported by the fiber. The number of modes supported by a fiber depends on the size of the core. The larger the core, the more modes supported. However, commercial off the shelf superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs) are currently limited in area, which limits the core size of the fibers that can efficiently couple to the detectors. To increase the amount of light that can be delivered to the detectors, NASA Glenn Research Center is considering many different fiber/detector architectures. This paper compares insertion loss of the fiber device for two different architectures: • a multi-plane light conversion device to split the light from a 30 µm core diameter fiber into 7 separate, 15 µm core diameter few-mode fibers butt-coupled to 7 single-element SNSPDs, and • a 30 µm core diameter multimode fiber butt-coupled to a 16 multi-element, SNSPD array. The measured insertion loss for each fiber device under emulated atmospheric conditions with D/r0 between 2 and 30 is presented. The multi-plane light conversion device shows a consistent ~1 dB loss more than the multimode fiber. Also presented is the measured uneven power splitting of the multiplane light conversion device, especially at lower D/r0. How this uneven power splitting contributes to system loss called blocking loss is discussed.

A Theoretical and Computational Revisit of Conversions Between Whitham’s F-Function and Equivalent Area

This paper proves mathematically that the integral transforms between Whitham’s F-function and equivalent area are the inverse transforms of each other if and only if the slope of the equivalent area at the origin is zero. This mathematical fact contradicts the accepted unconditional inverse relation between Whitham’s F-function and equivalent area in the sonic boom research literature. Piecewise linear approximations of an F-function and of the second derivative of an equivalent area are used to derive numerical formulas for conversions between Whitham’s F-function and equivalent area. Numerical results are included to show convergence of the numerical conversions as the maximum length of the segments for piecewise linear approximations goes to zero. These numerical conversions are approximately the inverse transforms of each other when the second derivative of an equivalent area is continuous and the slope of the equivalent area at the origin is zero.

Thermionic Energy Conversion in the Twenty-First Century: Advances and Opportunities for Space and Terrestrial Applications

Thermionic energy conversion (TEC) is the direct conversion of heat into electricity by the mechanism of thermionic emission, the spontaneous ejection of hot electrons from a surface. Although the physical mechanism has been known for over a century, it has yet to be consistently realized in a manner practical for large-scale deployment. This perspective article provides an assessment of the potential of TEC systems for space and terrestrial applications in the twenty-first century, overviewing recent advances in the field and identifying key research challenges. Recent developments as well as persisting research needs in materials, device design, fundamental understanding, and testing and validation are discussed.

Nuclear Electric Propulsion Brayton Power Conversion Working Fluid Considerations

NASA has considered Nuclear Electric Propulsion (NEP) for high ∆V missions since the late 1950s, but the current technology readiness level of the requisite power-train needs to be raised for such a mission. The powertrain includes reactor, power conversion, power management, electric propulsion, and thermal management components that must be integrated to minimize system a (kg/kWe) and to finalize a propulsion system architecture within the 2025-2027 timeframe requires advancing these component technologies to technology readiness level (TRL) 5 and Advancement Degree of Difficulty (AD2) 3 in an expeditious manner with minimal risks. This paper will only address the power conversion (heat to electric) components of that system. Based on both internal and industry studies, a primary conclusion of this work is that a single-spool supercritical Xe-He radial flux Brayton heat engine combined with a permanent magnet synchronous alternator can potentially be developed with the least technical risk to meet the technology readiness schedule and required NEP system performance metrics.

In Situ Conversion of Artificial Proton‐Rich Shell to Inorganic Maskant Toward Stable Single‐Crystal Ni‐Rich Cathode

Single-crystal high-nickel oxide with an integral structure can prevent intergranular cracks and the associated detrimental reactions. Yet, its low surface-to-volume ratio makes surficial degradation a more critical factor in electrochemical performance. Herein, artificial proton-rich (ammonium bicarbonate) shell is successfully introduced on the nickel-rich LiNi 0.92 Co 0.06 Mn 0.02 O 2 single crystals for in situ electrochemically conversing into inorganic maskant to enhance stability of cathode. The process is that the surficial enriched proton, once released from the ammonium bicarbonate shell (proton reservoir) during 1st charge, is immediately captured by LiPF 6 , in situ electrochemically conversing to LiF and Li 3 PO 4 sub-nano particle dense maskant (sub-nano F-&P-maskant). The in situ formed compact nano F-&P-maskant significantly resists the cathode against electrolyte attack and improves the surface stability of particles during long-term cycling. Consequently, this surface modification enables 95% capacity retention after 100 cycles at a high voltage of 4.5 V in the half cell and 83% capacity retention after 800 cycles in the full cell. In conclusion, this work demonstrates a strategy for reconstructing the protective layer using the rational design of surficial enriched proton shells for advanced lithium batteries.

Engineering PdAu/CeO 2 Alloy/Oxide Interfaces for Selective Methane‐to‐Methanol Conversion with Water

The direct conversion of methane-to-methanol remains a critical challenge in methane valorization. In this study, we unveil the crucial role of PdAu/CeO 2 catalysts in enabling selective methane transformation under mild conditions, using only water as the sole oxidant. Through a combination of experimental techniques, including XPS and catalytic testing, alongside density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we demonstrate that a Pd 0.3 Au 0.7 /CeO 2 catalyst, which predominantly exposes isolated Pd atoms, achieves remarkable methanol selectivity (∼80%) at 500 K with a 1:1 methane-to-water ratio. While Pd/CeO 2 efficiently activates methane, its tendency for overreaction leads to complete methanol decomposition, thereby limiting selectivity. Alloying Pd with Au on ceria mitigates this over-reactivity, preventing methanol degradation while maintaining sufficient catalytic activity. The PdAu/CeO 2 composite exhibits a synergistic effect: Pd in contact with the ceria support facilitates methane activation and water dissociation, while Au fine-tunes reactivity to promote methanol formation. DFT calculations confirm that isolated Pd sites at the PdAu/CeO 2 interface play a key role in balancing activity and selectivity. This work underscores the importance of alloy/oxide interfaces in controlling selective methane conversion with water and offers valuable insights for designing highly efficient catalysts for methanol synthesis.

The effect of copper additives on hybrid Zr-based chemical conversion coating morphology and chemical compositions

In the realm of corrosion protection, Zr-based conversion coatings offer an environmentally friendly, chromate-free alternative to conventional coating. This study uses advanced X-ray, electron microscopy and electrochemical testing techniques to better understand the impact of varying Cu²⁺ ion concentrations on the characteristics of Zr-based coatings on Fe substrates. Our findings demonstrate that within the tested conditions, higher Cu²⁺ additive concentrations at 40 ppm enhance surface characteristics, increasing stability towards anti-corrosion capability, particularly under NaCl treatment. Conversely, at a lower Cu²⁺ concentration of 20 ppm, coatings exhibited more significant dissolution of Cu clusters and increased vulnerability to chloride-induced degradation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy analyses revealed Cu²⁺ formation in Cu20, while Cu40 retained its metallic state (Cu⁰) with a slower reaction rate. Cu20 offers some protection but lacks durability, whereas in Cu40, lower I corr , and enhance corrosion resistance, making it ideal for protective coatings in salt-water environments. This study underscores the importance of balancing Cu²⁺ ions concentration in the coating solution to optimize performance, highlighting the role of Cu in enhancing both surface properties and long-term stability.

Opportunities and challenges in thermochemical conversion of municipal solid waste: A comprehensive review

Recent advancements in thermochemical conversion processes have elucidated new pathways for converting municipal solid waste into valuable resources. This review explores the primary thermochemical conversion methods, including combustion, gasification, pyrolysis, torrefaction, hydrothermal carbonization, and hydrothermal liquefaction, emphasizing their potential roles in waste management and energy recovery. Key challenges including feedstock variability, ash behavior, and scale-up limitations are discussed alongside opportunities for hybrid systems and circular economy integration. A comparative analysis of research publications indicates a significant focus on thermochemical pathways within the broader context of municipal solid waste research, underscoring the growing interest in these technologies. Recent advancements in each thermochemical process, alongside their operational, technical, and economic challenges, are discussed. Comparative data reveal that torrefaction enhances the hydrophobicity and grindability of municipal solid waste components, though its energy densification benefits are more modest than those observed in biomass. Hydrothermal carbonization and liquefaction are highlighted for their ability to process high-moisture and heterogeneous waste streams. The review also synthesizes recent findings on reactor configurations, emissions control, and synergistic effects in co-processing municipal solid waste fractions. The findings underscore the importance of developing standardized protocols for municipal solid waste characterization and the need for innovative hybrid systems to improve efficiency.

Bayesian optimization of entropy-stabilized metal fluoride conversion cathodes and their synthesis

Fluoride-based conversion cathodes are promising for next-generation Li ion batteries because of their high voltage and energy densities. High entropy earth abundant fluoride cathodes are attractive for sustainable battery because of the potentially higher cycling stability. While Ni and Co containing equimolar alloys stabilized by high entropy were considered previously, Ni and Co free non-equimolar metal alloy compositions might offer new opportunities to increase materials stability and average voltage. This opportunity was pursued using Bayesian optimization of average voltage for the computational prediction of (Fe x1 Cu x2 Zn x3 Mn x4 Mg x5 )F 2 cathode chemistries. Theoretical voltage, room temperature free energy, and electronic structure of potentially high voltage compositions were computed using density functional theory calculations. Here, the experimental realization of non-equimolar quinary Co and Ni free fluorides with stable rutile single phase and improved conversion reaction voltage by up to 28 % compared to the equimolar alloy demonstrated the power of Bayesian optimization methods for the computationally guided experimental synthesis of fluoride cathodes. Finally, non-equimolar cathode chemistries were found with cycling stability superior to known multi-element fluorides.

Numerical Simulation of Light to Heat Conversion by Plasmonic Nanoheaters

Plasmonic nanoparticles are widely recognized as photothermal conversion agents, i.e., nanotransducers or nanoheaters. Translation of these materials into practical applications requires quantitative analyses of their photothermal conversion efficiencies (η). However, the value of η obtained for different materials is dramatically influenced by the experimental setup and method of calculation. Here, we evaluate the most common methods for estimating η (Roper’s and Wang’s) and compare these with numerical estimates using the simulation software ANSYS. Experiments were performed with colloidal gold nanorod solutions suspended in a hanging droplet irradiated by an 808 nm diode laser and monitored by a thermal camera. The ANSYS simulations accounted for both heating and evaporation, providing η values consistent with the Wang method but higher than the Roper approach. This study details methods for estimating the photothermal efficiency and finds ANSYS to be a robust tool where experimental constraints complicate traditional methods.

Electrolyte–Electrocatalyst Interfacial Effects of Polymeric Materials for Tandem CO 2 Capture and Conversion Elucidated Using In Situ Electrochemical AFM

Integrating CO 2 capture and electrochemical conversion has been proposed as a strategy to reduce the net energy required for CO 2 regeneration in traditional CO 2 capture and conversion schemes and can be coupled with carbon-free renewable electricity. Polyethylenimine (PEI)-based materials have been previously studied as CO 2 capture materials and can be integrated in these reactive capture processes. PEI-based electrolytes have been found to significantly increase the CO 2 loading, and impact selectivity and rate of product formation when compared to the conventional aqueous electrolytes. However, the influence of these materials at the catalyst–electrode interface is currently not well understood. In this study, PEI-based electrolytes were prepared and their impact on the morphology of a silver electrode performing electrochemical CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R) was studied using in situ electrochemical atomic force microscopy (EC-AFM). The presence of PEI on the electrode surface could be distinguished based on nanomechanical properties (DMT modulus), and changes were observed as negative polarization was applied, revealing a reorganization of the PEI chains due to electrostatic interactions. These changes were impacted by the electrolyte composition, including the addition of supporting electrolyte KHCO 3 salt, as well as CO 2 captured by the PEI-based electrolyte, which minimized the change in surface mechanical properties and degree of PEI alignment on the electrode surface. The changes in surface mechanical properties were also dependent on the PEI polymer length, with higher molecular weight PEI showing different reconfiguration than the shorter polymer brushes. The study highlights that the choice of polymer material, the electrolyte composition, and CO 2 captured impact the nearelectrode environment, which has implications for CO 2 R, and presents EC-AFM as a new tool that can be used to probe the dynamic behavior of these interfaces during electrocatalysis.

Co-sputtered CuNi heteroatomic electrocatalyst for enhanced 5-hydroxymethylfurfural selective electrochemical conversion

The electrochemical conversion of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) represents a promising, economically viable, and environmentally sustainable approach for producing value-added chemicals using renewable energy and in situ hydrogen generated through water electrolysis. However, the electrochemical hydrogenation (ECH) of HMF remains challenging due to the inherently low catalytic activity and selectivity of the electrodes, compounded by competition with the kinetically favored hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in aqueous electrolytes. In this work, we demonstrate that Cu x Ni 100−x heteroatomic thin films, fabricated via direct current (DC) magnetron co-sputtering, achieve a more than one order of magnitude increase in the HMF to 2,5-Bis-hydroxymethylfuran (BHMF) conversion rate, with nearly 50% faradic efficiency (FE) for BHMF, when compared to pure Cu and Ni electrodes (~ 10% BHMF FE). Our results suggest that the synergistic interaction between Cu and Ni creates an optimal catalytic environment for both HMF and adsorbed hydrogen (H ads ) species, thereby enhancing BHMF formation through the ECH pathway.

Energy conversion and transport in molecular-scale junctions

Molecular-scale junctions (MSJs) have been considered the ideal testbed for probing physical and chemical processes at the molecular scale. Due to nanometric confinement, charge and energy transport in MSJs are governed by quantum mechanically dictated energy profiles, which can be tuned chemically or physically with atomic precision, offering rich possibilities beyond conventional semiconductor devices. While charge transport in MSJs has been extensively studied over the past two decades, understanding energy conversion and transport in MSJs has only become experimentally attainable in recent years. As demonstrated recently, by tuning the quantum interplay between the electrodes, the molecular core, and the contact interfaces, energy processes can be manipulated to achieve desired functionalities, opening new avenues for molecular electronics, energy harvesting, and sensing applications. This Review provides a comprehensive overview and critical analysis of various forms of energy conversion and transport processes in MSJs and their associated applications. We elaborate on energy-related processes mediated by the interaction between the core molecular structure in MSJs and different external stimuli, such as light, heat, electric field, magnetic field, force, and other environmental cues. Key topics covered include photovoltaics, electroluminescence, thermoelectricity, heat conduction, catalysis, spin-mediated phenomena, and vibrational effects. Furthermore, the review concludes with a discussion of existing challenges and future opportunities, aiming to facilitate in-depth future investigation of promising experimental platforms, molecular design principles, control strategies, and new application scenarios.
