Technique for depositing silicon dioxide on indium arsenide improves adhesion

Planar array processing of indium arsenide wafers includes dicing into a prescribed geometry, then cleaning and drying, and finally pre-oxidizing in an oxygen atmosphere at 500 degrees C. The last step forms an oxide interface between the InAs surface and a glow discharge deposited layer of silicon dioxide.

Polymeric coatings using electronic excitation

Process has been developed for glow discharge polymerization which is accomplished in inert atmosphere by using vacuum chamber. Polymeric coating, in this type of environment, produces high molecular weight coating polymers that have good stability and are resistant to abrasions and solvents.

Bondability of RTV silicon rubber

Glow discharge method for producing a bondable Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) silicone is described. Mechanical and chemical properties of silicone specimens are described. Theory concerning the relationship between surface characteristics and bondability is examined with respect to the polymer specimen.

Photoemissive coating

Polystyrene coating is applied to holographic storage tube substrate via glow discharge polymerization in an inert environment. After deposition of styrene coating, antimony and then cesium are added to produce photoemissive layer. Technique is utilized in preparing perfectly organized polymeric films useful as single-crystal membranes.

Use of thin film light detector

A photovoltaic cell device with a trapezoidal barrier is described. An aluminum, magnesium, or tantalum base is vapor deposited on a quartz substrate. An oxide or nitride film of the base metal is produced as an insulator by reaction in a glow discharge plasma to a thickness of less than 100 Angstroms. A metal, preferably gold, conter-electrode is vapor deposited on the insulating layer. A bias generator of high impedance is used to set and shift or modulate the spectral response of the device.

Electromagnetic wave propagation in a magneto-plasma filled coaxial structure. I - Theoretical. II - Experimental

This study is concerned with the problem of electromagnetic wave propagation in a magneto-plasma filled coaxial structure. The problem is formulated using the classical boundary value problem approach. A numerical investigation shows the existence of propagating slow modes, backward modes, a quasi-TEM mode, and waveguide-type modes in a magneto-plasma filled coaxial structure. Dispersion curves for these different modes are presented. Measurements have been made of electromagnetic propagation in a coaxial electrode structure filled with longitudinally magnetized plasma. The annular plasma region had a 9.55 cm outer diameter, a 3.82 cm inner diameter and was approximately 60 cm long. A magnetic field of 300 gauss was employed. Electromagnetic wave frequencies were in the range .5 to 2.4 GHz. The plasma was generated by a continuous glow discharge. The resulting dispersion curves closely follow the predicted curves for the quasi-TEM mode.

Ion plating with an induction heating source

Induction heating is introduced as an evaporation heat source in ion plating. A bare induction coil without shielding can be directly used in the glow discharge region with no arcing. The only requirement is to utilize an rf inductive generator with low operating frequency of 75 kHz. Mechanical simplicity of the ion plating apparatus and ease of operation is a great asset for industrial applications; practically any metal such as nickel, iron, and the high temperature refractories can be evaporated and ion plated.

Angular distribution of photoelectrons at 584A using polarized radiation

Photoelectron angular distributions for Ar, Xe, N2, O2, CO, CO2, and NH3 were obtained at 584 A by observing the photoelectrons at a fixed angle and simply rotating the plane of polarization of a highly polarized photon source. The radiation from a helium dc glow discharge source was polarized (84%) using a reflection type polarizer.

Annular arc accelerator shock tube

An annular arc accelerator shock tube employs a cold gas driver to flow a stream of gas from an expansion section through a high voltage electrode section to a test section, thus driving a shock wave in front of it. A glow discharge detects the shock wave and actuates a trigger generator which in turn fires spark-gap switches to discharge a bank of capacitors across a centered cathode and an annular anode in tandem electrode sections. The initial shock wave passes through the anode section from the cathode section thereby depositing energy into the flow gas without the necessity of any diaphragm opening in the gas flow from the expansion section through the electrode sections.

Plasma polymerized coating for polycarbonate - Single layer, abrasion resistant, and antireflection

Plasma polymerized vinyltrimethoxy silane films were deposited on transparent polycarbonate substrates. The adherent, clear films protected the substrates from abrasion and also served as antireflection coatings. Posttreatment of the vinyltrimethoxy silane films in an oxygen glow discharge further improved the abrasion resistance. ESCA (electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis) and IR transmission spectra of some films were recorded, and an elemental analysis of the films was obtained.

Boron trifluoride coatings for plastics

Tough, durable coatings of boron triflouride can be deposited on plastic optical components to protect them from destructive effects of abrasion, scratching, and environment. Coating material can be applied simultaneously with organic polymers, using plasma glow-discharge methods, or it can be used as base material for other coatings to increase adhesion.

Abrasion-resistant antireflective coating for polycarbonate

Following plasma-polymerization technique, treatment in oxygen glow discharge further enhances abrasion resistance and transmission. Improvement in abrasion resistance was shown by measuring percentage of haze resulting from abrasion. Coating samples were analyzed for abrasion using standard fresh rubber eraser. Other tests included spectra measurements and elemental analysis with spectrometers and spectrophotometers.
