Times of minimum derived from photometry obtained in 1963, 1967, 1978, and 1979 are presented. With these and previously published times, the period is studied. A constant period increase (quadratic ephemeris) represents most of the times but there was a period decrease in 1934 and possibly in 1984. A 50-year magnetic cycle is discussed.
The status of nuclear rocket propulsion is reviewed and its advantages for a manned Mars mission is examined. Special attention is given to nuclear thermal propulsion. The NASA nuclear propulsion program is reviewed.
Two major challenges exist for the development of dynamic control systems: first, the control system must be resourceful enough to provide problem-solving capabilities in unforeseen circumstances; second, it must be rapid enough to respond to dynamic environments. Most conventional control systems do not have the ability to 'step back' and problem-solve, especially in environments with incomplete and uncertain models and data. Orthogonally, commercially available AI systems usually do not respond at the rates required to support 'real-time' control. Hence, control systems are not available that respond to complex dynamic environments within appropriate time constraints. This paper describes work on an AI-based control system designed to address these challenges. A prototype system has been used, in a simulated environment, to control the robotic welding of aerospace components. This AI-based control system has demonstrated the ability to flexibly control a complex process within required time constraints by incorporating higher level reasoning and the ability to deal with uncertainty. Further work is in progress to expand the system's problem-solving capabilities.
Advances in computer and control technology offer the opportunity for task-offload aiding in human-machine systems. A task-offload aid (e.g., an autopilot, an intelligent assistant) can be selectively engaged by the human operator to dynamically delegate tasks to an automated system. Successful design and performance prediction in such systems requires knowledge of the factors influencing the strategy the operator develops and uses for managing interaction with the task-offload aid. A model is presented that shows how such strategies can be predicted as a function of three task context properties (frequency and duration of secondary tasks and costs of delaying secondary tasks) and three aid design properties (aid engagement and disengagement times, aid performance relative to human performance). Sensitivity analysis indicates how each of these contextual and design factors affect the optimal aid aid usage strategy and attainable system performance. The model is applied to understanding human-automation interaction in laboratory experiments on human supervisory control behavior. The laboratory task allowed subjects freedom to determine strategies for using an autopilot in a dynamic, multi-task environment. Modeling results suggested that many subjects may indeed have been acting appropriately by not using the autopilot in the way its designers intended. Although autopilot function was technically sound, this aid was not designed with due regard to the overall task context in which it was placed. These results demonstrate the need for additional research on how people may strategically manage their own resources, as well as those provided by automation, in an effort to keep workload and performance at acceptable levels.
Phase measurements on a single-mode radiation field are examined from a system-theoretic viewpoint. Quantum estimation theory is used to establish the primacy of the Susskind-Glogower (SG) phase operator; its phase eigenkets generate the probability operator measure (POM) for maximum likelihood phase estimation. A commuting observables description for the SG-POM on a signal x apparatus state space is derived. It is analogous to the signal-band x image-band formulation for optical heterodyne detection. Because heterodyning realizes the annihilation operator POM, this analogy may help realize the SG-POM. The wave function representation associated with the SG POM is then used to prove the duality between the phase measurement and the number operator measurement, from which a number-phase uncertainty principle is obtained, via Fourier theory, without recourse to linearization. Fourier theory is also employed to establish the principle of number-ket causality, leading to a Paley-Wiener condition that must be satisfied by the phase-measurement probability density function (PDF) for a single-mode field in an arbitrary quantum state. Finally, a two-mode phase measurement is shown to afford phase-conjugate quantum communication at zero error probability with finite average photon number. Application of this construct to interferometric precision measurements is briefly discussed.
This is a revised description and manual for the primordial nucleosynthesis program, NUC123, an updated and modified version of the code of R.V. Wagoner. NUC123 has undergone a number of changes, further enhancing its documentation and ease of use. Presented here is a guide to its use, followed by a series of appendices containing specific details such as a summary of the basic structure of the program, a description of the computational algorithm, and a presentation of the theory incorporated into the program.
Three sample information retrieval systems, archie, autoLib, and Wide Area Information Service (WAIS), are compared with regard to their expressiveness and usefulness, first in the general context of information retrieval, and then as prospective software reuse repositories. While the representational capabilities of these systems are limited, they provide a useful foundation for future repository efforts, particularly from the perspective of repository distribution and coherent user interface design.
Four scenarios for initial Mars missions are examined in this overview of strategies. The scenarios are compared to determine the most effective option with respect to the effects of reduced gravity, exposure to space radiation, and cost. Mission cost is evaluated based on initial mass in earth orbit for the four mission types: classes-opposition, conjunction, fast-transfer conjunction, and split sprint. The reduced gravitational force on the Martian surface is considered to be a critical factor because the physical deconditioning at 3/8 earth gravity is assumed to approximate that of zero gravity. Exposure to radiation is not determined to be a definite discriminator because none of the scenarios exceed established limits. The split sprint is championed based on the high energy transfers considered and with chemical propulsion (or preferably nuclear thermal propulsion) and aerobraking.

Helicopter simulators have been approved by means of special exemption; there are no FAA standards for simulators used in training or airmen Certification checking. The fixed-wing industry provides a precedent which can be used for expediting implementation of helicopter simulators. The analysis in this paper is founded on the experience with that precedent and is driven by a clear definition of helicopter user needs for (1) improved training at lower cost, (2) more comprehensive emergency training at lower risk, (3) increased fidelity of transition and instrument training compared with low-cost aircraft alternatives, and (4) certification credit for improved simulator training.

Psychologists are intrigued with the idea that optical variables can specify not only the time until an object impacts an observer but also the severity of the impact. However, the mapping between the optical variables and the kinematic variables has been misstated, erroneously implying that there exist critical values of the optical variables used for locomotion and control. In this commentary, the mathematical relationship between the optical and kinematic variables is reexamined and the erroneous assumptions that have led to the proposal of critical values are shown. Also examined are the empirical data on deceleration to approach to assess whether the proposed optical variables are likely candidates for control strategies. Finally, problems associated with numerical approximations to dynamic systems, particularly when analytic solutions exist, are discussed.
An overview is presented of the most compelling technological and economic arguments for NASA's agressive coordination of an SST-development program that would enlist all available U.S. aerospace industry resources. Attention is given to the minimization of upper atmosphere pollution through the use of low-NO(x) emission combustors and the reduction of sonic boom through wing/fuselage optimization. It is projected that a successful SST program would boost U.S. civil aircraft market share to nearly 80 percent; this represents the creation of 140,000 new jobs.
Task-offload aids (e.g., an autopilot, an 'intelligent' assistant) can be selectively engaged by the human operator to dynamically delegate tasks to automation. Introducing such aids eliminates some task demands but creates new ones associated with programming, engaging, and disengaging the aiding device via an interface. The burdens associated with managing automation can sometimes outweigh the potential benefits of automation to improved system performance. Aid design parameters and features of the overall multitask context combine to determine whether or not a task-offload aid will effectively support the operator. A modeling and sensitivity analysis approach is presented that identifies effective strategies for human-automation interaction as a function of three task-context parameters and three aid design parameters. The analysis and modeling approaches provide resources for predicting how a well-adapted operator will use a given task-offload aid, and for specifying aid design features that ensure that automation will provide effective operator support in a multitask environment.

The STS-40 was a mission of spaceborne experiments concerned with the physiological, biological, and chemical changes that occur in the human body as a result of microgravity. Indium phosphide is considered to be a strong contender for many photovoltaic space applications because of its radiation resistance and its potential for high efficiency. An overview of recent progress is presented, and possible future research directions for indium phosphide space solar cells are discussed. The topics considered include radiation damage studies and space flight experiments.
