A Method for Aircraft Concept Selection Using Multicriteria Interactive Genetic Algorithms

The problem of aircraft concept selection has become increasingly difficult in recent years as a result of a change from performance as the primary evaluation criteria of aircraft concepts to the current situation in which environmental effects, economics, and aesthetics must also be evaluated and considered in the earliest stages of the decision-making process. This has prompted a shift from design using historical data regression techniques for metric prediction to the use of physics-based analysis tools that are capable of analyzing designs outside of the historical database. The use of optimization methods with these physics-based tools, however, has proven difficult because of the tendency of optimizers to exploit assumptions present in the models and drive the design towards a solution which, while promising to the computer, may be infeasible due to factors not considered by the computer codes. In addition to this difficulty, the number of discrete options available at this stage may be unmanageable due to the combinatorial nature of the concept selection problem, leading the analyst to arbitrarily choose a sub-optimum baseline vehicle. These concept decisions such as the type of control surface scheme to use, though extremely important, are frequently made without sufficient understanding of their impact on the important system metrics because of a lack of computational resources or analysis tools. This paper describes a hybrid subjective/quantitative optimization method and its application to the concept selection of a Small Supersonic Transport. The method uses Genetic Algorithms to operate on a population of designs and promote improvement by varying more than sixty parameters governing the vehicle geometry, mission, and requirements. In addition to using computer codes for evaluation of quantitative criteria such as gross weight, expert input is also considered to account for criteria such as aeroelasticity or manufacturability which may be impossible or too computationally expensive to consider explicitly in the analysis. Results indicate that concepts resulting from the use of this method represent designs which are promising to both the computer and the analyst, and that a mapping between concepts and requirements that would not otherwise be apparent is revealed.

Experimental demonstration of coupled multi-peak Bragg coherent diffraction imaging with genetic algorithms

Bragg coherent diffraction imaging has the potential to provide significant insight into the structure-properties relationship for crystalline materials by imaging, with nanoscale resolution, three-dimensional strain fields within individual grains and nanoparticles. The capability of present-day synchrotrons to locate and measure a multiplicity of Bragg reflections from a single grain makes it possible to recover the full strain tensor with nanometer resolution. Recent methods for coupling reconstructions from several peaks to determine the strain tensor have been developed and applied to synthetic data, but have not been applied to experimental data. Here, using a coupled genetic reconstruction algorithm, we reconstruct an experimental data set and demonstrate improvements in the ability to resolve vector-valued displacement fields internal to the particle as compared to what is achieved with a noncoupled approach. The coupled approach developed in this work was also validated on simulated data sets. In both simulated and experimental data, reconstructions from our coupled Bragg peak algorithm show improvements over the noncoupled independent reconstruction method of 5% in terms of accuracy and 53% in terms of consistency.

Genetic algorithm for demand response: a stackelberg game approach

Demand response (DR) has gained a significant recent interest due to its potential for mitigating many power system problems. Game theory is a very effective tool to be utilized in DR management. In this paper, the DR between a distribution system operator (DSO) and load aggregators (LAs) is designed as a Stackelberg game, where the DSO acts as the leader and LAs are regarded as the followers. Due to the limitations of the centralized solution approaches, a genetic algorithm-based decentralized approach is proposed. To demonstrate the proposed approach, a case study concerning a day-ahead optimization for a real-time pricing market with a single DSO and three LAs is designed and optimized. The proposed approach is able to shift the demand peaks and prove that it has a great potential to be used for the Stackelberg game between a DSO and multiple LAs to fully exploit the potential of DR.

An Improved Genetic Algorithm approach to the Unit Commitment/Economic Dispatch problem

The deployment of new technologies, the importance of accurately modeling the dynamics of the generating units and the introduction of new policies are making the solution of the Unit Commitment/Economic Dispatch problem more and more complicated. In the present scenario, traditionally followed scheduling criteria might not lead to the optimal fleet configuration any more. In addition, most of the widely used techniques have limited capabilities at modeling the nonlinear dynamics of committed power plants. When realistic power systems comprising of several tens of generating units are modeled, the resulting optimization problem turns to be computationally intensive for the current computing capabilities. In this paper, an improved version of a GA-based optimization algorithm is presented. A detailed methodology aimed at obtaining a more efficient version of the GA, and a more detailed and accurate description of the flexible operation flexibility of the power plants is described.

On the cross-polarization characteristics of crooked wire antennas designed by genetic-algorithms

In many modern communication applications there is a need for simple circularly polarized antennas for hemispherical coverage with good axial ratio or low value of cross polarization. We revisited the crooked wire antenna because of its simplicity. This paper presents results of our investigation on the crooked wire antennas and other elements.

Si Tight-Binding Parameters from Genetic Algorithm Fitting

Quantum mechanical simulations of carrier transport in Si require an accurate model of the complicated Si bandstructure. Tight-binding models are an attractive method of choice since they bear the full electronic structure symmetry in them and they can discretize a realistic device on an atomic scale.

Inverse design of hypoeutectoid pearlite steel microstructures using a deep learning and genetic algorithm optimization framework

Goal-oriented microstructure design in metallic materials is a challenging task due to complex structure-property relationships. Traditional experimental and computational approaches are time-intensive and economically inefficient, limiting their applicability for large-scale design space exploration. Here, in this work, we propose an end-to-end framework that integrates deep learning models with genetic optimization to design microstructures with targeted mechanical properties. Deep learning models enable accurate forward design, while their integration with genetic optimization enables efficient inverse design within a few hours, compared to days or weeks using conventional finite element simulations. The framework combines experimental characterization and finite element modeling to analyze the influence of microstructural features on the mechanical behavior of hypoeutectoid steels. Data from both experiments and simulations are used to train the deep learning models. To demonstrate its effectiveness, we apply the framework to 0.63% carbon steel with proeutectoid ferrite and pearlite phases, commonly used in industrial applications. In this study, 2D microstructures were used for modeling, selected primarily for computational efficiency and to establish proof of concept. The framework successfully optimizes microstructures for targeted yield strength, ultimate strength, and stress concentration factors while significantly reducing computational time. Beyond hypoeutectoid steels, this scalable framework can be extended to other material systems and integrated with additive manufacturing, offering an efficient approach for accelerating microstructure design for specific engineering applications.

Enhancing molecular design efficiency: Uniting language models and generative networks with genetic algorithms

This study examines the effectiveness of generative models in drug discovery, material science, and polymer science, aiming to overcome constraints associated with traditional inverse design methods relying on heuristic rules. Generative models generate synthetic data resembling real data, enabling deep learning model training without extensive labeled datasets. They prove valuable in creating virtual libraries of molecules for material science and facilitating drug discovery by generating molecules with specific properties. While generative adversarial networks (GANs) are explored for these purposes, mode collapse restricts their efficacy, limiting novel structure variability. To address this, we introduce a masked language model (LM) inspired by natural language processing. Although LMs alone can have inherent limitations, we propose a hybrid architecture combining LMs and GANs to efficiently generate new molecules, demonstrating superior performance over standalone masked LMs, particularly for smaller population sizes. This hybrid LM-GAN architecture enhances efficiency in optimizing properties and generating novel samples.
