Conceptual Design of Passive Neutron Albedo Reactivity and Active Neutron Albedo Reactivity Instruments for Various Arrangements of Pebble Bed Reactor Pebbles

MCNP6 simulations were performed to assess the anticipated capability of the Passive Neutron Albedo Reactivity technique for nuclear safeguards measurements of irradiated pebble/pebbles. Two physical setups were examined. One with a single pebble of three different burnups and one with 27 pebbles in a cube. For all cases the sensitivity to removing all the fissile material was examined. For both of the physical setups, 4 assay cases were examined: (a) singles count rates for which the only source neutrons were the inherent neutrons in the fuel, (b) singles count rates again except this time two relatively weak AmLi sources were placed above and below the top central pebble and the combined effect of both neutron source terms were examined, (c) doubles count rates for which the only source neutrons were the inherent neutrons in the fuel, and (d) doubles count rates again except this time two relatively weak AmLi sources were placed above and below the top central pebble and the combined effect of both neutron source terms were examined. Finally, a few parameters such as Cd near the 3 He tubes were perturbed to see if the results could be improved.

Development of Luminescent Materials and Instrumentation for Critical Mineral Discovery and Monitoring

Presentation discussing career paths in chemistry as well as how chemical research is applied to address real-world problems. Here, a variety of different materials (metal-organic frameworks, carbon dots, thin films, etc.) are used as luminescent sensors to detect trace quantities of economically critical metals, which are used in applications ranging from renewable energy to national defense. In an application particularly relevant to Western Pennsylvania, the sensor technologies are deployed in coal utilization byproducts including fly ash leachates and acid mine drainage. Taken together, this research presents an exciting path towards reducing the characterization costs associated with metals prospecting and process monitoring, facilitating domestic production of these metals.

Deployment of Digital Twins and Advanced Instrumentation to Identify Looseness Between Rotor Spider Arms and Rim Attachment in Hydro Turbines

The project aimed to develop a Virtual Sensor Digital Twin (VS-DT) to monitor rotor rim float displacement (RRFD) in legacy hydropower turbines. RRFD, if undetected, can cause rotor and stator damage, leading to costly repairs and safety concerns. The purpose of the VS-DT was to predict RRFD signals using existing conventional sensors instead of installing dedicated, costly physical sensors, thereby reducing operational costs and enhancing safety.

Guidance Regarding Probable Approaches and Instrumentation to Liquid Fuel Molten Salt Reactor Material Control and Accounting (MC&A) Rev. 1

With the rapid development of advanced reactors and numerous companies requesting pre-application engagements with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), there is need for the NRC to best prepare themselves for new challenges presented by advanced technologies. One specific reactor type of interest is the molten salt reactor (MSR) that uses liquid salt as the fuel for the reactor. Liquid salt fuel reactors have specific challenges with regards to performing material control and accounting (MC&A). The challenges result from the fuel form being a continuous fissile material form rather than discrete units like is found with fuel assemblies in traditional light water reactors (LWRs). The goal of this document is to provide the NRC with guidance on the different approaches and technologies that may be proposed by reactor designers to address these problems to prepare staff for regulatory reviews.

Network of Modified Portable Optical Particle Spectrometers Instrument Handbook

The U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s portable optical particle spectrometer (POPS) network (Figure 1) provides an aerosol size distribution spectrum from 150 nm to 5 μm in 16 logarithmically spaced bins. The data emanating from this network of up to four matching POPS in weatherproof enclosures comprises one-minute averages of the aerosol size and number spectrum and the co-located temperature and relative humidity. The total particle concentration and sample flow rate are also provided. The sample stream is not dried before its measurement. Two size spectra are provided: the default size distribution corresponds to the calibration using polystyrene latex spheres (PSL), while the second size distribution corresponds to the calibration using size-selected dry ammonium sulfate aerosol. The principal scientific application of the data provided by the ARM POPS is to determine the aerosol size distribution across a region in three disparate locations – the size distribution is broadly relevant to studies of pollution and of conditions in the boundary layer. A high particle concentration can be an indicator of unhealthy levels of pollution; the dispersion of particles in the atmosphere is a predictor of long-range visibility; and particles serve as collectors of condensing gases including water vapor, and thus are a factor in the formation and properties of fogs and clouds, and in the initiation of precipitation.

Toward Automated Plasma Focus Ion Beam Instrument Calibration for Materials Processing [Poster]

To accelerate the transition to autonomous focused ion beam (FIB) microscopy, we require an objective figure of merit (FOM) for assessing calibration. For our purposes, these FOMs related to beam astigmatism, quad, and focus. Intelligent calibration integrated into scripted workflows will enable fully automated sample preparation workflows that produce higher quality samples with less operator time.

Surface Energy Balance System (SEBS) Instrument Handbook

A surface energy balance system (SEBS) has been installed collocated with each deployed eddy correlation flux measurement system (ECOR) after 2010 at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility Southern Great Plains (SGP) observatory, North Slope of Alaska (NSA) observatory, Eastern North Atlantic (ENA) observatory, and the first, second, and third ARM Mobile Facilities (AMF1, AMF2, AMF3). A SEBS was also deployed at the Tropical Western Pacific (TWP) site, before it was decommissioned. Data from these sites, including the retired TWP, are available in the ARM Data Center. The SEBS consists of upwelling and downwelling solar and infrared radiometers within one net radiometer, a wetness sensor, and soil temperature, soil moisture, and soil heat flow measurements. The SEBS measurements allow the comparison of ECOR sensible and latent heat fluxes with the energy balance determined from the SEBS and provide information on wetting of the sensors for data quality purposes.
