Validation of Nuclear Data Sensitivity Calculations by the MCNP PERT Card [Poster]

This work validates a method of estimating sensitivities that utilized the MCNP PERT card and tallies. The agreement of the PERT card and Brute Force results proves the validity of calculating nuclear data sensitivities by use of the MCNP PERT card, especially at higher energies. The overall agreement will be easier to understand once an uncertainty analysis is completed.

Chlorine Nuclear Data Evaluation Aided Through New LANSCE Measurements

The collaboration between the Los Alamos National Laboratory Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) and TerraPower LLC enables the enhanced understanding of fast spectrum critical systems consisting of chlorine. Specifically, TerraPower is interested in updating the nuclear data for the stable isotopes of chlorine, 35 Cl and 37 Cl, because these nuclides are the primary constituents of the chloride fuel salt in the Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment (MCRE), for which TerraPower is leading the design. The Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between the parties is funded by DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy’s Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) initiative to provide the nuclear community with access to the technical, regulatory, and financial support necessary to motivate innovative nuclear reactor technologies toward commercialization. New measurements of 35 Cl(n,p total ) and 35 Cl(n,α total ) were completed at LANSCE to constrain the reaction theory models that are used to generate the updated evaluations. The updated evaluations were then tested across the sensitivities of the MCRE by TerraPower to provide direct feedback to the evaluation for application specific sensitivities.

Nuclear Data Sheets for A=154

The experimental results published before Aug 2022 from the various reaction and decay studies leading to nuclides of Z=56 to Z=72, 154 Ba, 154 La, 154 Ce, 154 Pr, 154 Nd, 154 Pm, 154 Sm, 154 Eu, 154 Gd, 154 Tb, 154 Dy, 154 Ho, 154 Er, 154 Tm, 154 Yb, 154 Lu, 154 Hf, in the A=154 mass chain have been reviewed. These data are collected and presented in decay or reaction datasets, together with Adopted Levels and gammas datasets that are the most extensive collections of nuclear structure data for each nuclide. Furthermore this work is intended to supersede the previous evaluation of the A=154 nuclides by C.W. Reich (2009Re14), which was published in Nuclear Data Sheets 110, 2257 (2009).

Nuclear Data Sheets for A=242

Here, detailed level schemes, decay schemes, band structure, and the experimental data on which they are based are presented for all nuclei with mass number A=242. The experimental data are evaluated and adopted values are given for level and radiation properties. For references on theory refer to the NSR file at the web site given below under Cutoff Date:. This evaluation replaces the A=242 publication by Y. A. Akovali in Nuclear Data Sheets 96, 177 (2002) (2002Ak06).

Capitalizing on nuclear data libraries' comprehensiveness to obtain solar r-process abundances

The recent observation of neutron stars merger by the LIGO collaboration and the measurements of the event’s electromagnetic spectrum as a function of time for different wavelengths, have altered profoundly our understanding of the r-process site, as well as considerably energized nuclear astrophysics research efforts. R -process abundances are a key element in r-process simulations, as a successful calculation must account for these abundances in the final debris of a stellar cataclysmic event. In this letter, mankind’s complete knowledge of neutron cross sections obtained in the last80 years, as encapsulated in the latest release of the Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF/B) library, is used to obtain solar r-process abundances in a novel way. Here, ENDF/B cross sections has been successfully used for decades in nuclear power and defense applications and are now used to obtain r-process abundances in a fully traceable, documented and unbiased way.

Chlorine Worth Study Nuclear Data

The Chlorine Worth Study (CWS) was a series of experiments that took place at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC), operated by Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The focus of the experiments was to develop new integral benchmarks for the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook with high sensitivity to chlorine in the thermal neutron energy region and which match sensitivities of aqueous chloride operations at LANL. This work discusses the experiment and how the experimental and simulated results using different nuclear data libraries compare to each other.

On the Uranium and Plutonium Nuclear Data Evaluations [Slides]

This presentation provides overviews of uraniums, 233 U and 235 U, plutonium research including motivations, current status in ENDF/B-VIII.0, the inclusion of sub-thermal data, and the inclusion of LANL ratio capture-to-fission data. Additionally, the preliminary fit of Mosby’s data as reported, fluctuating neutron multiplicities, uncertainty in evaluated libraries, and experimental effects are also presented. The presentation concludes by providing a summary of plans for the U and Pu evaluation work.

Theoretical and calculable dependent variables and their covariance in nuclear data libraries [Slides]

This presentation begins by defining observables, including theoretical observable, calculable observable, and measured observable. It also provides definitions and examples of experimental effects. Additionally, uncertainty in evaluated libraries and a metric to probe evaluated uncertainty is presented. In conclusion, being related to theoretical quantities such as resonance parameters, the uncertainty in ENDF libraries (e.g., ENDF/B-VIII.0) can be overestimated because it is usually evaluated under the guidance of experimental uncertainty: lim Δσexp.corr.→0 Δσ = Δσ theoretical model . The presentation states that a clear distinction of the uncertainty between nuclear theoretical models and experimental corrections should be revisited and this is important since (e.g., transport) simulations need theoretical quantities convoluted with specific operational parameters and material configurations. It also states that strong coupling between uncertainty quantification methodologies and optimization procedures exists, and it is necessary to develop methodologies to obtain uncertainty on theoretical models from physical and mathematical constraints.

Nuclear Data Sheets for A=245

Available information pertaining to the nuclear structure of ground and excited states for all known nuclei with mass numbers A=245 have been compiled and evaluated. In this work, the adopted level and decay schemes, as well as the detailed nuclear properties and configuration assignments based on experimental data, are presented for these nuclides. When there are insufficient data, expected values from systematics of nuclear properties and/or theoretical calculations are utilized. Unexpected or discrepant experimental results are also noted. Since the last evaluation, new rotational bands in 245 Pu have been observed to high spin from transfer reaction 244 Pu( 209 Bi, 208 Biγ) by 2014Ho16. While in 245 Am, the 249 Bk α decay measurements by 2013Ah03 added a new rotational band based on π3/2[521] configuration. The 245 Pu β - decay scheme is basically what was proposed in the late 60's and 47 γ rays have still not been placed. In 245 Cm, precise alpha energies and intensities were measured by 2015Ah03 in 249Cf α decay. Their reported alpha energies of the main α group were about 2 keV lower than in the previous evaluation. The spin and parity of the g.s. of 245 Es is still ambiguous as more detailed information on the decay is needed. With the production of 249 No via fusion evaporation reaction by groups in Dubna and GSI, it's alpha decay was studied and some properties of the daughter 245 Fm were published and included in this evalaution. Information on the other nuclides is scarce and not much has been investigated since the last evaluation. A summary and compilation of the discovery of the various nuclides in this mass region is given in: 2013Fr02 ( 245 Pu, 245 Am, 245 Cm, 245 Bk, 245 Cf), 2011Me01 ( 245 Es), and 2013Th02 ( 245 Md, 245 Fm).
