A New Analytical Approach to Predict Spacing Selection in Lamellar and Rod Eutectic Systems

In this paper, we reexamine the Jackson and Hunt (JH) theory and relax the assumption of isothermal solid/liquid interface(SLI) used in their treatment. A modification of the term B. in the expression of the solute concentration profile is also proposed. Based on the predictions of this modified theory the traditional definitions of regular and irregular eutectics are discussed. For regular eutectics the new model identifies a range of spacing within the limits defined by the minimum undercooling of the alpha and beta phase. For the irregular Al-Si eutectic system in particular we identified two different spacing selection mechanisnis: a) for a particular growth rate, a nearly isothermal interface can be achieved at a unique minimum spacing lambda(sub I); b) the average spacing in the microstructure (lambda(sub av) > lambda(sub I)) is essentially dictated by the undercooling of the faceted phase. Based on the modified theoretical model a semi-empirical expression has been developed to account for the influence of the temperature gradient. The theoretical calculations have been found to be in good agreement with the published experimental measurements.

A New Analytical Approach to Predict Spacing Selection in Lamellar and Rod Eutectic Systems

The Jackson and Hunt (JH) theory has been modified to relax the assumption of isothermal solid/liquid interface(SLI) used in their treatment. Based on the predictions of this modified theory the traditional definitions of regular and irregular eutectics are revised. For regular eutectics the new model identifies a range of spacing within the limits defined by the minimum undercooling of the alpha and beta phase. For the irregular Al-Si eutectic system two different spacing selection mechanisms were identified: a) for a particular growth rate, a nearly isothermal interface can be achieved at a unique minimum spacing lambda(sub I); b) the average spacing (lambda(sub av) greater than lambda(sub I)) is essentially dictated by the undercooling of the faceted phase. Based on the modified theoretical model a semiempirical expression has been developed to account for the influence of the temperature gradient, which is dominant in the irregular Al-Si system. The behavior of the Fe-Fe3C eutectic is also discussed The theoretical calculations have been found to be in good agreement with the published experimental measurements.

Based on the modified theoretical model, a semiempirical expression has been developed to account for the influence of the temperature gradient, which is dominant in the irregular Al-Si system. Processing of Ni30Pt20Ti50 High-Temperature Shape-Memory Alloy Into Thin Rod Demonstrated

High-temperature shape-memory alloys (HTSMAs) based on nickel-titanium (NiTi) with significant ternary additions of palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), gold (Au), or hafnium (Hf) have been identified as potential high-temperature actuator materials for use up to 500 C. These materials provide an enabling technology for the development of "smart structures" used to control the noise, emissions, or efficiency of gas turbine engines. The demand for these high-temperature versions of conventional shape-memory alloys also has been growing in the automotive, process control, and energy industries. However these materials, including the NiPtTi alloys being developed at the NASA Glenn Research Center, will never find widespread acceptance unless they can be readily processed into useable forms.

Tunable graded rod laser assembly

A tunable laser assembly including a pair of radially graded indexed optical segments aligned to focus the laser to form an external resonant cavity with an optical axis, the respective optical segments are retativity moveable along the optical axis and provide a variable et aion gap sufficient to permit variable tuning of the laser wavelength without altering the effective length of the resonant cavity. The gap also include a saturable absorbing material providing a passive mode-locking of the laser.

Synthesis and Compatibility of Ionic Liquid Containing Rod-Coil Polyimide Gel Electrolytes with Lithium Metal Electrodes

A highly cross-linked polyimide-polyethylene oxide copolymer has been synthesized that is capable of holding large volumes of liquid component, simultaneously maintaining good dimensional stability. An amine end capped oligomer was made that was imidized in solution, followed by reaction with a triisocyanate in the presence of desired additives at ambient temperature. Polymer films are able to hold over 4 times their weight in room temperature ionic liquid RTIL or carbonate solvent. Electrolytes were studied that contained varying amounts of RTIL, lithium trifluoromethanesulfonimide LiTFSi, and alumina nanoparticles. Electrochemical stability of these electrolytes with lithium metal electrodes was studied by galvanic cycling and impedance spectroscopy. Improved cycling stability and decreased interfacial resistance were observed when increasing amounts of RTIL and LiTFSi were added. The addition of small amounts of alumina further decreased interfacial resistance by nearly an order of magnitude. During the course of the study, cycling stability increased from less than 3 to greater than 1000 h at 60 C and 0.25 mA/cm2 current density.

Monopolar fuel cell stack coupled together without use of top or bottom cover plates or tie rods

A monopolar fuel cell stack comprises a plurality of sealed unit cells coupled together. Each unit cell comprises two outer cathodes adjacent to corresponding membrane electrode assemblies and a center anode plate. An inlet and outlet manifold are coupled to the anode plate and communicate with a channel therein. Fuel flows from the inlet manifold through the channel in contact with the anode plate and flows out through the outlet manifold. The inlet and outlet manifolds are arranged to couple to the inlet and outlet manifolds respectively of an adjacent one of the plurality of unit cells to permit fuel flow in common into all of the inlet manifolds of the plurality of the unit cells when coupled together in a stack and out of all of the outlet manifolds of the plurality of unit cells when coupled together in a stack.

Pulse-Echo Phased Array Ultrasonic Inspection of Pultruded Rod Stitched Efficient Unitized Structure (PRSEUS)

A PRSEUS test article was subjected to controlled impact on the skin face followed by static and cyclic axial compressions. Phased array ultrasonic inspection was conducted before impact, and after each of the test conditions. A linear phased array probe with a manual X-Y scanner was used for interrogation. Ultrasound showed a delamination between the skin and stringer flange adjacent to the impact. As designed, the stitching in the flange arrested the lateral flaw formation. Subsequent ultrasonic data showed no delamination growth due to continued loading. Keywords: Phased Array, Ultrasonics, Composites, Out-of-Autoclave

Experimental Investigation of Solid Rod Cathode Operation

A series of models have been developed to describe the temperature distribution of thermionic cathodes in high current discharges in an effort to evaluate cathode service life. A number of experimental measures have been made to validate these models and provide values of the input parameters. Examination of the surfaces of several cathodes after varying lengths of operation shows the evolution of surface microstructures and reveals the preferential deposition of thorium metal on the cathode tip.

Extended Stroke and Miniaturized Reverse-Operation DTE Thermal Switches

This paper describes two advanced thermal switches under development that are offshoots of the recently flight-qualified 2500:1 reverse-operation differential thermal expansion (DTE) thermal switch (ROD-TSW). The first is the extended stroke ROD-TSW (ES-ROD-TSW) while the second is the miniaturized ROD-TSW (mini-ROD-TSW). Each employs multiple diametrically nested DTE stages in contrast to the single-stage ROD-TSW. The ES-ROD-TSW employs two stages and a negative CTE material known as Allvar and its main purpose is to extend its stroke for use in non-vacuum planetary environments. The mini-ROD-TSW employs four stages to miniaturize its size for use in compact lunar instruments and rovers. The ES-ROD-TSW was TVAC tested at JPL and its ON/OFF ratio is 13000:1 based on a measured ON conductance of 6.89 W/K and a calculated OFF conductance of 0.00053 W/K. The mini-ROD-TSW is targeted to have an ON conductance of 1.5 W/K and an OFF conductance of 0.0015 W/K, both verified by analysis. Test verification of the mini-ROD-TSW remains to be carried out. The paper will provide design/performance details of each device.

Finite Element Analysis of MEMS Devices

A side-slide actuator and a corrugated diaphragm actuator will be analyzed and optimized this summer. Coupled electrostatic and fluid analyses will also be initiated. Both the side-slide actuator and the corrugated diaphragm actuator will be used to regulate the flow of fuel in a jet engine. Many of the side-slide actuators will be placed on top of a fuel injector that is still in the developmental stage as well. The corrugated diaphragm actuator will also be used to regulate the flow of fuel in fuel injectors. A comparative analysis of the performance matrix of both actuators will be conducted. The side-slide actuator uses the concept of mechanical advantage to regulate the flow of fuel using electrostatic forces. It is made from Nickel, Silicon Carbide, and thin layers of Oxide. The slider will have a hole in the middle that will allow fuel to pass through the hole underneath it. The goal is to regulate the flow of fuel through the inlet. This means that the actuator needs to be designed so that when a voltage is applied to the push rod, the slider will deflect in the x-direction and be able to completely block the inlet and no fuel can pass through. Different voltage levels will be tested. The parameters that are being optimized are the thickness of the diaphragm, what kind of corrugation the diaphragm should have, the length, width, and thickness of the push rod, and what design should be used to return the slider. The current possibilities for a return rod are a built in spring on the slider, a return rod that acts like a spring, or a return rod that is identical to the push rod. The final actuator design should have a push rod that has rotational motion and no translation motion, a push rod thickness that prevents warping due to the slider, and a large ratio of the displacement on the bottom of the push rod to displacement on the top of the push rod. The corrugated diaphragm actuator was optimized last winter and this summer will be spent completing the optimization of the coupled electrostatic and fluid flow parameters. It was found that Nickel is the best material to use for the diaphragm because it has a higher yield strength and allows for a larger stress, deflection and applied pressure. The parameters that were optimized were the wavelength and thickness of the diaphragm.
