Fabrication is described of waterproof electrical connector assembly for use with Teflon jacketed cables and constructed so that assembly will remain sealed under extreme environmental conditions. Conditions are specified as: pressure from vacuum to atmospheric; temperature from 280 K to 450 K; exposure to saturated steam; and steam suddenly introduced into vacuum.
Connector pair consists of two iron cores brought together a short distance from each other. Each core is wound with insulated wire. Ac signal is connected through the pair across the gap by magnetic induction. Device can be used underwater or in flammable atmosphere.
Technique of covering fire-hazardous sections of electrical wiring with fireproof materials prevents fires from spreading in oxygen-enriched atmospheres and eliminates use of heavy metal enclosures. Materials used to cover potting on connectors and ground terminals are made from Teflon-coated Beta cloth and Fluorel, a nonflammable fully-saturated polymer.
Gap, where cable joins connector housing, is shielded effectively by composite RF shielding made from suitable potting resin material (fumed silica, thixotropic prepolymer composition), conductive coating (silver-filled, flexible, polyurethane resin), and protective jacket (wax coated housing formed around another wax form having contours shaped to match configuration).
Military specifications with general purpose parameters and termination data covering flat connectors and flat cables are proposed. The material, design, coating, and insulation are discussed, and drafts of specifications for flat cables including quality assurance provisions, and inspection are presented.
Prototype gauge has been constructed of heavy clear plastic with engraved degree lines, numerals, and alignment lines. With suitable modification, gauge can be mass produced. It could be marketed directly to users or to manufacturers of circular multipin connectors.

The development of interfacial inserts for improved electric connectors is discussed. The inserts were manufactured from epoxy resins. The design features of the inserts and the manufacturing equipment are described. The reliability test program is reported. Drawings of the interfacial inserts are provided.
Electric breakdown prevention in vacuum and encapsulation of high voltage electronic circuits was studied. The lap shear method was used to measure adhesive strengths. The permeation constants of air at ambient room temperature through four different space-grade encapsulants was measured. Order of magnitude was calculated for the time that air bubble pressures drop to the corona region. High voltage connectors with L-type cable attached were tested in a vacuum system at various pressures. The cable system was shown to suppress catastrophic breakdown when filled with and surrounded by gas in the corona region of pressures, but did not prove to be completely noise free.
The structural reliability of lines, connectors, joints, and fittings used in liquid and gaseous O2 systems was examined. Overstress and high velocity flow of gaseous O2 as they affect system failure are also examined. Special attention was given to efforts to determine factors for designing a reliable O2 transport system for operation at all possible pressures.
An analytical technique is presented for evaluating the relationship among existing numerous separable fluid connector designs to find that configuration which is best (optimal). The data utilized in this research was acquired from approximately 900 flanges designed for six sub-systems of the S-1B stage of the Saturn 1B Space Vehicle. The method is general enough to be useful in optimizing design and systematizing decision-making in a variety of related technical fields.
Use of device eliminates crimp connectors and ferrules, resulting in compact termination assembly and efficient use of back-shell space. Pair of insulator rings, one at each end of assembly, provides spacing between disc caps and contact rings.

Proposed connector consisting of twin metal films separated by thin layers of insulating material transmits digital pulses capacitively. There is no direct contact between metal films; therefore, there is no ohmic contact drop and no wear when connections are changed. Since metal films are sealed in insulating material, there is no corrosion from exposure to atmosphere.
A percutaneous multielectrode connector was designed which utilizes an ultrapure carbon collar to provide an infection free biocompatible passage through the skin. The device provides reliable electrical continuity, mates and demates readily with the implant, and is fabricated with processes and materials oriented to commercial production.
