Postbuckling of long orthotropic plates loaded in combined transverse compression and longitudinal compression or shear

The postbuckling behavior of simply supported, rectangular, isotropic and orthotropic composite plates under combined loading is determined analytically. Results are presented for a long plate loaded beyond its buckling load in either a combination of longitudinal and transverse compression or a combination of transverse compression and inplane shear. Results show that orthotropic plates may behave differently than isotropic plates for these loading conditions. Results also show that the postbuckling behavior of plates in shear with constrained edge displacements is markedly different than their behavior with stress free edges.

A new description of combined trellis coding with asymmetric modulation

The combination of rate k/(k+t) trellis codes with digital modulations described by an asymmetric 2 sup k+1-point signal constellation has been recently shown to yield performance improvement over the traditional symmetric constellation combined with the same trellis code. The approach taken is to specify an underlying trellis code and then map the output code symbols into the fixed signal constellation based on a rule called mapping by set partitioning. The latter process is tantamount to assigning signals from the constellation to the trellis code transitions so as to maximize the free Euclidean distance of the code. Recently, a new description of trellis codes has been given that combines the above two steps into one. The ideas introduced are further explored, placing particular emphasis on the optimization of the signal constellation asymmetry. It can be concluded that the trellis-coded amplitude modulation (AM) designs given are very close to being optimum.

Combined bearing and bypass loading on a graphite/epoxy laminate

A combined experimental and analytical study was conducted to determine the behavior of a graphite/epoxy laminate subjected to combined bearing and bypass loading. Single-fastener quasi-isotropic specimens were loaded at various bearing-bypass ratios until damage was produced at the fastener hole. Damage-onset strengths and damage modes were then analyzed using local hole-boundary stresses calculated by a finite-element analysis. The tension data showed the expected linear interaction for combined bearing and bypass loading with damage developing in the net-section tension mode. However, the compression bearing-bypass strengths showed an unexpected interaction involving the bearing mode. Compressive bypass loads reduced the bearing strength by decreasing the bolt-hole contact arc and thus increasing the severity of the bearing loads. The bearing stresses at the hole boundary were not accurately estimated by superposition of the stress components for separate bearing and bypass loading. However, superposition produced reasonably accurate estimates for tangential stresses especially near the specimen net-section.

Combining beams from separated telescopes

In the present paper, work is discussed which arose in the context of optical design studies for the proposed space-based COSMIC (Coherent Optical System of Modular Interferometric Collectors) telescope. The operation of COSMIC involves the combination of a number of parallel beams with a central beam-combining telescope which forms an image of the sky. The paper is mainly concerned with the aspects of beam combination. The paraxial constraint condition is considered along with tolerances regarding the individual optical elements, and imaging as a nonshearing recombination. A first-order requirement for achieving a finite field of view is discussed, taking into account specifically the case of a coherent imaging optical system.

Performance characteristics of a combination solar photovoltaic heat engine energy converter

A combination solar photovoltaic heat engine converter is proposed. Such a system is suitable for either terrestrial or space power applications. The combination system has a higher efficiency than either the photovoltaic array or the heat engine alone can attain. Advantages in concentrator and radiator area and receiver mass of the photovoltaic heat engine system over a heat-engine-only system are estimated. A mass and area comparison between the proposed space station organic Rankine power system and a combination PV-heat engine system is made. The critical problem for the proposed converter is the necessity for high temperature photovoltaic array operation. Estimates of the required photovoltaic temperature are presented.

Effects of combining vertical and horizontal information into a primary flight display

A ground-based aircraft simulation study was conducted to determine the effects of combining vertical and horizontal flight information into a single display. Two display configurations were used in this study. The first configuration consisted of a Primary Flight Display (PFD) format and a Horizontal Situation Display (HSD) with the PFD displayed conventionally above the HSD. For the second display configuration, the HSD format was combined with the PFD format. Four subjects participated in this study. Data were collected on performance parameters, pilot-control inputs, auditory evoked response parameters (AEP), oculometer measurements (eye-scan), and heart rate. Subjective pilot opinion was gathered through questionnaire data and scorings for both the Subjective Workload Assessment Technique (SWAT) and the NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX). The results of this study showed that, from a performance and subjective standpoint, the combined configuration was better than the separate configuration. Additionally, both the eye-transition and eye-dwell times for the separate HSD were notably higher than expected, with a 46% increase in available visual time when going from double to single display configuration.

Analysis of the ICE combiner for multiple antenna arraying

The passage of the International Cometary Explorer (ICE) through the tail of comet Giacobini-Zinner took place on September 11, 1985, at approximately 11:04 GMT. The signal-to-noise ratio of the data received from the ICE spacecraft during the comet encounter was improved by arraying the 64-m antenna channels A and B (RCP and LCP) with the two 34-m antennas. Specially designed combiners were built to combine the signals received by the three antennas at the different DSN sites to ensure that the spacecraft's weak signal was received. Although the ICE spacecraft was built with a 5-W transmitter and with a small antenna designed to provide data from no farther than 1 million miles, these combiners provided enough signal margin during the encounter to receive the ICE transmitted data from within the tail of comet Giacobini-Zinner, 44 million miles from earth.

Determination of Earth rotation by the combination of data from different space geodetic systems

Formerly, Earth Rotation Parameters (ERP), i.e., polar motion and UTI-UTC values, have been determined using data from only one observational system at a time, or by the combination of parameters previously obtained in such determinations. The question arises as to whether a simultaneous solution using data from several sources would provide an improved determination of such parameters. To pursue this reasoning, fifteen days of observations have been simulated using realistic networks of Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR), Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) to Lageos, and Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) stations. A comparison has been done of the accuracy and precision of the ERP obtained from: (1) the individual system solutions, (2) the weighted means of those values, (3) all of the data by means of the combination of the normal equations obtained in 1, and (4) a grand solution with all the data. These simulations show that solutions done by the normal equation combination and grand solution methods provide the best or nearly the best ERP for all the periods considered, but that weighted mean solutions provide nearly the same accuracy and precision. VLBI solutions also provide similar accuracies.

Combined mechanical loading of composite tubes

An analytical/experimental investigation was performed to study the effect of material nonlinearities on the response of composite tubes subjected to combined axial and torsional loading. The effect of residual stresses on subsequent mechanical response was included in the investigation. Experiments were performed on P75/934 graphite-epoxy tubes with a stacking sequence of (15/0/ + or - 10/0/ -15), using pure torsion and combined axial/torsional loading. In the presence of residual stresses, the analytical model predicted a reduction in the initial shear modulus. Experimentally, coupling between axial loading and shear strain was observed in laminated tubes under combined loading. The phenomenon was predicted by the nonlinear analytical model. The experimentally observed linear limit of the global shear response was found to correspond to the analytically predicted first ply failure. Further, the failure of the tubes was found to be path dependent above a critical load level.

Optimization of rotor blades for combined structural, performance, and aeroelastic characteristics

The strategies whereby helicopter rotor blades can be optimized for combined structural, inertial, dynamic, aeroelastic, and aerodynamic performance characteristics are outlined. There are three key ingredients in the successful execution of such an interdisciplinary optimization. The first is the definition of a satisfactory performance index that combines all aspects of the problem without too many constraints. The second element is the judicious choice of computationally efficient analysis tools for the various quantitative components in both the cost functional and constraints. The third element is an effective strategy for combining the various disciplines either in parallel or sequential optimizations.

Three beam-combining schemes in a color projection display

Several beam-combining schemes for on-axis and off-axis optical system layout are presented. The on-axis approaches include two crossed plates with dichroic coatings placed at 90 deg, with respect to each other, and a pentaprism arrangement. The off-axis layout of the cathode ray tubes requires that the images be combined at the display screen. These image-combining approaches are compared for the standard television rates of 525 lines and the high-resolution television at 1200/2000 lines under development in Japan. It is concluded that, for the high-performance, high-color fidelity, and high-resolution projection systems, which are expected to fit into a small volume of space such as a Space Station display or a cockpit panoramic display, a folded configuration with either crossed plates or pentaprism plates will result in an optimum color display.

JPL 1990-3: A 5-nrad extragalactic source catalog based on combined radio interferometric observations

A combined analysis merges 17,000 Deep Space Network (DSN) Very Long Baseline Interferometric (VLBI) observations with 303,000 observations from the Crustal Dynamics Project (CDP) and the International Radio Interferometric Surveying (IRIS) project. Observations from the Radio Reference Frame Development (RRFD) and Time and Earth Motion Precision Observations (TEMPO) programs through late 1990 form the DSN VLBI data set. The combined analysis yields angular coordinates of extragalactic radio sources with a precision of a few nanoradians, as compared with 5 to 10 nrad precision for coordinates derived in the past solely from DSN data. The improvement in the combined analysis is due to the new Mark III DSN data, as well as to increased statistical strength from the large volume of observations from non-DSN experiments. Such a unified analysis is made possible by recent improvements in parameter estimation software efficiency. The terrestrial reference frame is based on joint VLBI experiments using both DSN and CDP antennas, and on specifying the coordinates of VLBI antennas in a proper geocentric coordinate system by means of Global Positioning System (GPS) collocation of VLBI, LLR, and SLR (Laser Ranging) sites.

Continuation methods in multiobjective optimization for combined structure control design

A homotopy approach involving multiobjective functions is developed to outline the methods that have evolved for the combined control-structure optimization of physical systems encountered in the technology of large space structures. A method to effect a timely consideration of the control performance prior to the finalization of the structural design involves integrating the control and structural design processes into a unified design methodology that combines the two optimization problems into a single formulation. This study uses the combined optimization problem as a family of weighted structural and control costs. Connections with vector optimizations are described; an analysis of the zero-set of required conditions is made, and a numerical example is given.

Future missions studies: Combining Schatten's solar activity prediction model with a chaotic prediction model

K. Schatten (1991) recently developed a method for combining his prediction model with our chaotic model. The philosophy behind this combined model and his method of combination is explained. Because the Schatten solar prediction model (KS) uses a dynamo to mimic solar dynamics, accurate prediction is limited to long-term solar behavior (10 to 20 years). The Chaotic prediction model (SA) uses the recently developed techniques of nonlinear dynamics to predict solar activity. It can be used to predict activity only up to the horizon. In theory, the chaotic prediction should be several orders of magnitude better than statistical predictions up to that horizon; beyond the horizon, chaotic predictions would theoretically be just as good as statistical predictions. Therefore, chaos theory puts a fundamental limit on predictability.
