Chemical interpretation of Viking Lander 1 life detection experiment

An earth-based evaluation of the Viking Lander 1 life-detection experiments was conducted using a radiofrequency glow discharge in a simulated Martian atmosphere. The Gas Exchange Experiment conducted in the humid mode released substantial amounts of CO2, O2, N2, Ar, and CO into the atmosphere, indicating that these substances were adsorbed onto the Martian soil. An adsorption potential plot is given, graphing quantity of gas against time (d). For a model surface area of 17 squares meters per gram of measured substance, oxygen adsorption was found to be relatively high, a result which tends to confirm the hypothesis that Martian oxygen exists largely in chemisorbed states or in active oxygen compounds, e.g., peroxide, superoxide, hydroperoxide

Laser-induced two-photon blackbody radiation in the vacuum ultraviolet

Experimental measurements of a new type of vacuum-ultraviolet radiation source are reported. It is shown that the maximum source brightness, within its narrow linewidth, is that of a blackbody at the temperature of a metastable storage level. The laser-induced emission at 569 A from a He glow discharge corresponded to a metastable temperature of 22,700 K and was over 100 times brighter than the 584-A He resonance line.

Survey of ion plating sources

Based on the type of evaporation source, gaseous media and mode of transport, the following is discussed: resistance, electron beam, sputtering, reactive and ion beam evaporation. Ionization efficiencies and ion energies in the glow discharge determine the percentage of atoms which are ionized under typical ion plating conditions. The plating flux consists of a small number of energetic ions and a large number of energetic neutrals. The energy distribution ranges from thermal energies up to a maximum energy of the discharge. The various reaction mechanisms which contribute to the exceptionally strong adherence - formation of a graded sustrate/coating interface are not fully understood, however the controlling factors are evaluated. The influence of process variables on the nucleation and growth characteristics are illustrated in terms of morphological changes which affect the mechanical and tribological properties of the coating.

The application of the least squares finite element method to Abel's integral equation

Abel's integral equation is the governing equation for certain problems in physics and engineering, such as radiation from distributed sources. The finite element method for the solution of this non-linear equation is presented for problems with cylindrical symmetry and the extension to more general integral equations is indicated. The technique was applied to an axisymmetric glow discharge problem and the results show excellent agreement with previously obtained solutions

Hydrophobic coating of solid materials by plasma-polymerized thin film using tetrafluoroethylene

Glass slides were coated with plasma-polymerized tetrafluoroethylene films of different thickness using the glow discharge technique in a tube-shaped chamber, and the plasma conditions, film growth rates, light permeability of the polymer films, and particle bond strength in the polymer films were studied. Ashed sections of mouse organs and ashed bacillus spores were also coated to give them hydrophobic treatment without damaging their shapes or appearance. The hydrophobic coating of the specimens was successful, and the fine ash patterns were strongly fixed onto the glass slides, making permanent preparations.

Survey of ion plating sources

Ion plating is a plasma deposition technique where ions of the gas and the evaporant have a decisive role in the formation of a coating in terms of adherence, coherence, and morphological growth. The range of materials that can be ion plated is predominantly determined by the selection of the evaporation source. Based on the type of evaporation source, gaseous media and mode of transport, the following will be discussed: resistance, electron beam sputtering, reactive and ion beam evaporation. The various reaction mechanisms which contribute to the exceptionally strong adherence - formation of a graded substrate/coating interface are not fully understood, however the controlling factors are evaluated. The influence of process variables on the nucleation and growth characteristics are illustrated in terms of morphological changes which affect the mechanical and tribological properties of the coating.

Effects of artificial excitation upon a low Reynolds number Mach 2.5 jet

The effects of a single point glow discharge excitation device upon a low Reynolds number (8700), Mach 2.5, axisymmetric, cold air jet were experimentally investigated. Both the acoustic and flow fields of the jet were altered by the excitation; the acoustic field could be altered to a greater extent, however, by the addition of a spurious lobe to the sound pressure level contours. It was also possible to reduce the level of excitation so that the acoustic field showed only a slight decrease in the amplitude of the noise radiated by the jet. The main effect of low level excitation was a slight compacting of the development of the jet into a shorter axial length. A decrease in the broadband turbulence, a narrowing of the breadth of the peak in the spectrum around the fundamental frequency, and an enhancement of the harmonics were also noted.

Deposition of thin insulation layers from the gas phase

The continuous deposition of thin organic dielectric films on metallized carrier foils by glow discharge in monomeric gases is described. Depending on the applied monomers, the films had a dissipation factor of .001 to .003 (1 kHz), a relative permittivity of 2.3 to 2.5 and a resistivity of about 10 to the 17th power omega cm. Additionally, they proved to have a high mechanical homogeneity. Self-healing rolled capacitors with a very high capacitance per volume and of consistently high quality were fabricated from the metallized carrier foils covered with the dielectric film.

Research on the noise produced by large scale structure in supersonic jets

Using a dual electrode glow discharge excitation device, a method of mode selection into either the n = 0 or n = + or - 1 azimuthal modes was developed and tested by Fourier analyzing experimental azimuthal phase and amplitude data. On a M = 2.1 moderate Reynolds number (Re = 68,000) jet with a laminar boundary layer, under n = 0 or n = +1 excitation, coherent axial wave evolution, mean flow, and sound pressure level directivity measurements were performed. The boundary layer of this same jet was excited usng a grit coating on the nozzle wall, and bandpassed axial wave evolution data obtained and compared to the masurements made by previous workers on a conventional high Reynolds number jet (Re = 5,000,000) using a hot-film type probe.

Laboratory and astronomical measurement of the millimeter wave spectrum of the ethynyl radical CCH

The N = 0 yields 1 and 1 yields 2 rotational transitions of CCH at 87 and 174 GHz, respectively, have been detected in a laboratory glow discharge in a mixture of He and C2H2. The spectroscopic constants of CCH derived from measurements of the hfs of the transitions agree well with those derived from astronomical observations, confirming the astronomical detection of CCH. As the CCH lines in the Orion Nebula are narrower than the laboratory lines but less certain in rest frequency owing to uncertainty in the radial velocity, the most accurate values for the spectroscopic constants of CCH are obtained from a simultaneous fit of both the laboratory and astronomical data. For the rotation, centrifugal distortion, spin-rotation, and hyperfine constants, respectively, the values found are within 0.006 of 43674.534 MHz, within 0.0008 of 0.1071 MHz, within 0.004 of -62.606 MHz, b = within 0.019 MHz of 40.426, and c is within 0.026 of 12.254 MHz.

Measurement of the J = 0-1 rotational transitions of three isotopes of ArD(+)

The rotational transitions of all three isotopic species of ArD(+) in samples containing the Ar isotopes in their natural abundances have been measured by means of millimeter and submillimeter techniques that employ a magnetically enhanced abnormal glow discharge. All three transition frequency measurements were made from digitally averaged signals detected through a lock-in amplifier with a 10-msec time constant. The Ar-4OD(+) transition was easily visible in real time on an oscilloscope with SNR of about 15. It is noted that the observed transition of Ar-38D(+) is more than five orders of magnitude weaker than that due to HCO(+).

Status of Plasma Physics Techniques for the Deposition of Tribological Coatings

This paper reviews the plasma physics deposition techniques of sputtering and ion-plating. Their characteristics and potentials are discussed in terms of synthesis or deposition of tribological coatings. Since the glow discharge or plasma generated in the conventional sputtering and ion-plating techniques has a low ionization efficiency (<0.1%), rapid advances have been made in equipment design to further increase the ionization efficiency. The enhanced ionization favorably affects the nucleation and growth sequence of the coating. This leads to improved adherence and coherence, higher density, favorable morphological growth, and reduced internal stresses in the coatings. As a result, desirable coating characteristics can be precision tailored. Tribological coating characteristics of sputtered solid film lubricants such as MoS2, ion-plated soft gold and lead metallic films, and sputtered and ion-plated wear-resistant refractory compound films such as nitrides and carbides are discussed.

Laboratory detection of the C3N an C4H free radicals

The millimeter-wave spectra of the linear carbon chain free radicals C3N and C4H, first identified in IRC + 10216 and hitherto observed only in a few astronomical sources, have been detected with a Zeeman-modulated spectrometer in laboratory glow discharges through low pressure flowing mixtures of N2 + HC3N and He + HCCH, respectively. Four successive rotational transitions between 168 and 198 GHz have been measured for C3N, and five rotational transitions between 143 and 200 GHz for C4H; each is a well-resolved spin doublet owing to the unpaired electron present in both species. Precise values for the rotational, centrifugal distortion, and spin doubling constants have been obtained, which, with hyperfine constants derived from observations of the lower rotational transitions in the astronomical source TMC 1, allow all the rotational transitions of C3N and C4H at frequencies less than 300 GHz to be calculated to an absolute accuracy exceeding 1 ppm.

Frictional and structural characterization of ion-nitrided low and high chromium steels

Low Cr steels AISI 41410, AISI 4340, and high Cr austenitic stainless steels AISI 304, AISI 316 were ion nitrided in a dc glow discharge plasma consisting of a 75 percent H2 - 25 percent N2 mixture. Surface compound layer phases were identified, and compound layer microhardness and diffusion zone microhardness profiles were established. Distinct differences in surface compound layer hardness and diffusion zone profiles were determined between the low and high Cr alloy steels. The high Cr stainless steels after ion nitriding displayed a hard compound layer and an abrupt diffusion zone. The compound layers of the high Cr stainless steels had a columnar structure which accounts for brittleness when layers are exposed to contact stresses. The ion nitrided surfaces of high and low Cr steels displayed a low coefficient of friction with respect to the untreated surfaces when examined in a pin and disk tribotester.

Optical properties of hydrogenated amorphous carbon films grown from methane plasma

A 30 kHz ac glow discharge formed from methane gas was used to grow carbon films on InP substrates. Both the growth rate, and the realitive Ar ion sputtering rate at 3 keV varied monotonically with deposition power. Results from the N-15 nuclear reaction profile experiments indicated a slight drop in the hydrogen concentration as more energy was dissipated in the ac discharge. Values for the index of refraction and extinction coefficient ranged from 1.721 to 1.910 and 0 to -0.188, respectively. Optical bandgaps as high as 2.34 eV were determined.

Advances in sputtered and ion plated solid film lubrication

The glow discharge or ion assisted vacuum deposition techniques, primarily sputtering and ion plating, have rapidly emerged and offer great potential to deposit solid lubricants. The increased energizing of these deposition processes lead to improved adherence and coherence, favorable morphological growth, higher density, and reduced residual stresses in the film. These techniques are of invaluable importance where high precision machines tribo-components require very thin, uniform lubricating films (0.2 m), which do not interface with component tolerances. The performance of sputtered MoS2 films and ion plated Au and Pb films are described in terms of film thickness, coefficient of friction, and wear lives.
