Impact of synchronous condensers on fault location and black start in multi-inverter isolated microgrids

Synchronous condensers have been used in power systems for decades, but they are now attracting interest as a potential means for solving certain issues associated with inverter-based resources in islanded power systems. They have been extensively studied in applications to large wind farms and weak grids, but there has been very little study of synchronous condensers in intentionally-islanded systems, and especially self-healing ones. This report documents the results of an LDRD project intended to create modeling tools for use in the study of synchronous condensers in these smaller off-grid systems, and to explore synchronous condensers in this application. The results indicate that synchronous condensers have the potential to provide many benefits, but there are also several unanswered questions and technical challenges requiring further study.

The QUIC Start Guide (V.6.4.9)

QUIC stands for the Quick Urban & Industrial Complex (QUIC) dispersion modeling system. QUIC is a fast response urban dispersion model that runs on a laptop. QUIC is comprised of a 3D wind field model called QUIC-URB, a transport and dispersion model called QUIC-PLUME, and graphical user interface called QUIC-GUI. QUIC also includes QUIC-PRESSURE to solve for pressure fields in and around buildings, a population exposure assessment tool called QUIC-POP, and an indoor infiltration calculator for computing indoor concentrations. Transport and dispersion for different types of airborne contaminants can be computed on building to neighborhood scales in tens of seconds to tens of minutes. QUIC will never give perfect answers, but it will account for the effects of buildings in an approximate way and provide more realism than non-building aware dispersion models.

Jump-Start U.S. Manufacturing of High-Performance Permanent Magnets

Gas atomized feedstock powders for Nd-Fe-B based magnets are more robust and cost effective than the strip-cast sheet currently used as feedstock for milling by the magnet industry. However, gas atomized powder’s crystallinity and grain boundary phases are less ideal than the strip cast flake. We proposed to optimize the atomization process as well as the powder chemistry to address this issue and to eliminate heavy rare earth elements from these magnet alloys. Our goal is to help GKN-Hoeganaes, a US metal powder company, who used to make Nd-Fe-B magnets, to bring back US manufacturing of these high energy density permanent magnets.

Getting Started with Evaluations with Means and Uncertainties (EMU 3.0)

One of the most fundamental quantities in nuclear physics is the reaction cross section. A cross section represents the probability that a nuclear reaction will resolve through a given channel given a target nucleus and a projectile with a certain energy. A nuclear evaluation is a set of discrete data and interpolation rules to convert those discrete nuclear reaction data—such as the cross section—into a continuous function at arbitrary energies. Evaluated nuclear data files that can appear in Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF) and Generalized Nuclear Data Structure (GNDS) formats, storing a “most-complete” discretized representation of nuclear data, based on both experimental measurements and theory models.

Evidence for Neutrino Emission from X-Ray Bright Seyfert Galaxies in the Southern Hemisphere Using Enhanced Starting Track Events with IceCube

IceCube recently reported the observation of TeV neutrinos from the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068, and the corresponding neutrino flux is significantly higher than the upper limit implied by observations of GeV–TeV gamma rays. This suggests that neutrinos are produced near the supermassive black hole, where the radiation density is high enough to obscure gamma rays. We use a set of muon neutrinos with interaction vertices inside the detector, which have good sensitivity to sources in the southern sky, from IceCube data recorded between 2011 and 2021. We then search for individual and collective neutrino signals from 14 Seyfert galaxies in the southern sky selected from the Swift Burst Alert Telescope AGN Spectroscopic Survey. Using the correlations between keV X-rays and TeV neutrinos predicted by disk–corona models, and assuming production characteristics similar to NGC 1068, a collective neutrino signal search reveals an excess of $6.{7}_{-3.2}^{+4.0}$ events, which is inconsistent with background expectations at the 3σ level of significance. In this Letter, we present new independent evidence that Seyfert galaxies contribute to the extragalactic flux of high-energy neutrinos.

Cyber-Informed Engineering: Standards Development Organization Quick Start Guide

Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) is an emerging methodology focused on identifying and reducing high-consequence events that may affect physical critical infrastructure systems as a result of their dependence on digital technology. CIE, developed by National Laboratories and promoted by the Department of Energy (DOE), incorporates consequence-focused planning into the design and engineering process from the earliest stages of a project. This guide provides a concise overview of CIE and offers practical insight into how Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) can interpret CIE principles and apply those concepts in updates to various standards. It is important to remember that CIE extends beyond a compliance checklist, emphasizing a broader, interpretive approach. Instead, it encourages an interpretive mindset - a "turning of 'what if' to 'even if'" approach that anticipates and engineers out high-consequence events. The authors encourage SDOs to establish and promote CIE principles as enhancements for more resilient-by-design outcomes across critical infrastructure energy sectors. The 12 core principles of CIE outline specific behaviors and actions that SDOs and engineers may adopt to enhance system resilience. This guide applies these principles in a manner intended to be relevant across various technologies and threat landscapes. We welcome institutions and vendors to identify new or different framework alignments and mappings as we collectively work towards a safer and more reliable digital landscape.

Temperature-stabilized, triggerable microelectronic astable multivibrator starts reliably

Multiple chip custom block, MIC construction is used to fabricate an ultracompact, low-power astable multivibrator. The design provides a multivibrator that free runs, eliminating lockup, is triggerable, pulling into synchronization with an external signal source, and permits design flexibility for controlling the frequency variations with temperature.
