Alignment design for a cryogenic telescope

This paper describes the alignment approach for the infrared astronomical satellite (IRAS) optical subsystem from initial design to acceptance testing. The constraints imposed by the requirement of maintaining alignment at 300K and 2K, in a 1-g and 0-g gravitational field, during warm and cold vibration, and during various stages of assembly, are discussed. The paper concludes with the methodology of applying NASTRAN finite element analyses to the alignment design, followed by the verification of the accuracy of the design with the test results.

Galactic cosmic ray gradients, field-aligned and latitudinal, among Voyagers 1/2 and IMP-8

The present investigation represents a summary of a comprehensive analysis of the same subject conducted by Roelof et al. (1981). It is pointed out that the tandem earth-Jupiter trajectories of the Voyager 1/2 spacecraft, combined with baseline measurements from the earth-orbiting IMP 7/8 spacecraft, provide the first opportunity for unambiguously separating latitude from radial or field-aligned effects in galactic cosmic ray gradients. Attention is given to the method of data analysis, and the separation of field-aligned and latitudinal gradients. It is found that latitudinal gradients approximately equal to or greater than 1 percent per deg in the cosmic ray intensity were a common feature of the interplanetary medium between 1 and 5 AU in 1977-78. Except in the most disturbed periods, cosmic ray intensities are well-ordered in field-aligned structures.

Initial results on the correlation between the magnetic and electric fields observed from the DE-2 satellite in the field-aligned current regions

Initial results of the electric and magnetic field observations from the DE-2 satellite show a remarkably good correlation between the north-south component of the electric field and the east-west component of the magnetic field in many passes of the field-aligned current regions. For a dayside cusp pass on August 15, 1981 the coefficient of correlation between these components was 0.996. A preliminary inspection of the available data from the first 6 months of the DE operation indicates that the similarity between the electric and magnetic field signatures of the field-aligned currents is a commonly observed feature at all local times. This high correlation is interpreted to be an indication that the closure of the field-aligned current is essentially meridional. When the correlation between these components is not good, the closure current is likely to be flowing along the auroral belt. When the correlation between the electric and magnetic fields is high, it is possible to estimate the height-integrated Pedersen conductivity from the observed field components.

Elevated temperature properties of aligned ferrous eutectics

Iron base alloys containing aluminum and chromium together with smaller amounts of yttrium and silicon are of interest for high temperature applications. Strengthening an inherently weak but oxidation resistant solid solution matrix with aligned in situ chromium carbides represents an attractive approach to achieving both surface stability and creep resistance at elevated temperatures. Aligned microstructures were produced in alloys of approximately 30 wt % (Cr + Mn), about 3 wt % C and the balance Fe consisting of a gamma matrix and the hexagonal carbide (Cr, Mn, Fe)7C3. The tensile and stress rupture strength to 2000 F of aligned Fe-20 w/t % Cr-10 wt % Mn-3.2 wt % C measured parallel to the carbide reinforcement exceeded those of the strongest iron-nickel superalloys, e.g., CRM-6D developed by Chrysler for automotive turbine application. The cyclic oxidation and sulfidation response of these alloys at elevated temperatures can be markedly improved by aluminum additions.

Neutral sheet current interruption and field-aligned current generation by three-dimensional driven reconnection

Externally-driven reconnection is simulated by solving the magnetohydrodynamic equations in a three-dimensional, tail-like geometry. As reconnection proceeds, the tail current is interrupted locally and field-aligned currents are generated. The field-aligned current flows towards the ionosphere on the morning side and away from the ionosphere in the evening. The field-aligned currents flow in a narrow band at the outer edge of the plasma sheet. Thus, the simulation demonstrates that the nightside substorm current system is a natural consequence of the driven reconnection model.

Field-aligned electron density irregularities near 500 km. Equator to polar cap topside sounder Z mode observations

In addition to spread F, evidence for field-aligned electron density irregularities is commonly observed on Alouette 2 topside sounder ionograms recorded near perigee (500 km). This evidence is provided by distinctive signal returns from sounder-generated Z mode waves. At low latitudes these waves become guided in wave ducts caused by field-aligned electron density irregularities and give rise to strong long-duration echoes. At high latitudes, extending well into the polar cap, these Z mode waves (and stimulated electrostatic waves at the plasma frequency) produce a series of vertical bars on the ionogram display as the satellite traverses discrete field-aligned density structures. The radio frequency (RF) noise environment to be expected in the 400 to 500 km altitude region from low to high latitudes was examined by analyzing perigee Alouette 2 topside sounder data. All observed noise bands were scaled on nearly 200 topside sounder ionograms recorded near perigee at low, mid, and high latitude telemetry stations. The minimum and maximum frequencies of each noise band were entered into a data base or compuer analysis. The signals of primary interest in the perigee study were found to be sounder-generated.

DE 1 observations of type 1 counterstreaming electrons and field-aligned currents

Dynamics Explorer 1 satellite observations of plasma and magnetic fields during type one counterstreaming electron events are presented. Counterstreaming electrons are observed at high altitudes in the region of field-aligned current. The total current density computed from the plasma data in the 18-10,000 eV energy range is generally about 1-2 micro-A/sq m. For the downward current, low-energy electrons contribute more than 40 percent of the total plasma current density integrated above 18 eV. For the upward current, such electrons contribute less than 50 percent of that current density. Electron beams in the field-aligned direction are occasionally detected. The pitch angle distributions of counterstreaming electrons are generally enhanced at both small and large pitch angles. STARE simultaneous observations for one DE 1 pass indicated that the field-aligned current was closed through Pedersen currents in the ionosphere. The directions of the ionospheric current systems are consistent with the DE 1 observations at high altitudes.

An MHD simulation of By-dependent magnetospheric convection and field-aligned currents during northward IMF

A three-dimensional MHD simulation code is used to model the magnetospheric configuration when the IMF has both a northward B(z) component and a B(y) component in the east-west direction. Projections of the plasma pressure, the field-aligned velocity, the field-aligned vorticity, and the field-aligned current along the magnetic field lines into the northern ionosphere are shown and discussed. Cross-sectional patterns of these parameters are shown. The results demonstrate that the B(y) component of the IMF strongly influences the plasma sheet configuration and the magnetospheric convection pattern.

Observations of field-aligned currents, waves, and electric fields at substorm onset

Substorm onsets, identified Pi 2 pulsations observed on the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory Magnetometer Network, are studied using magnetometer and electric field data from ISEE 1 as well as magnetometer data from the geosynchronous satellites GOES 2 and 3. The mid-latitude magnetometer data provides the means of both timing and locating the substorm onset so that the spacecraft locations with respect to the substorm current systems are known. During two intervals, each containing several onsets or intensifications, ISEE 1 observed field-aligned current signatures beginning simultaneously with the mid-latitude Pi 2 pulsation. Close to the earth broadband bursts of wave noise were observed in the electric field data whenever field-aligned currents were detected. One onset occurred when ISEE 1 and GOES 2 were on the same field line but in opposite hemispheres. During this onset ISEE 1 and GOES 2 saw magnetic signatures which appear to be due to conjugate field-aligned currents flowing out of the western end of the westward auroral electrojets. The ISEE 1 signature is of a line current moving westward past the spacecraft. During the other interval, ISEE 1 was in the near-tail region near the midnight meridian. Plasma data confirms that the plasma sheet thinned and subsequently expanded at onset. Electric field data shows that the plasma moved in the opposite direction to the plasma sheet boundary as the boundary expanded which implies that there must have been an abundant source of hot plasma present. The plasma motion was towards the center of the plasma sheet and earthwards and consisted of a series of pulses rather than a steady flow.

Design and simulation of closed-loop ground alignment of inertial platforms with sway motion

This paper is concerned with the application of optimal estimation and control concepts to the ground alignment of inertial platforms subjected to random sway motion. A seventh-order Kalman filter has been designed for estimating the platform misalignments and sway motion. Using the linear quadratic optimal regulator techniques, feedback controller gains have been designed to drive the initial misalignments to a small value. A reconfiguration of the filter controller scheme has been proposed and verified by Monte Carlo simulation for improving the speed of alignment without changing the alignment accuracy.

Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) optics module breadboard alignment methods and results

The Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) optics module will be assembled at ambient temperature but will operate at liquid helium temperature. The challenging task of ensuring that is possible to maintain alignment through cryogenic cooling and cryogenic vibration has been demonstrated in a DIRBE optics module breadboard program. This paper discusses the configuration of the DIRBE optics module breadboard, ambient temperature optical alignment methods used to assemble the breadboard, and cryogenic testing of the breadboard. The alignment of the optical assembly at ambient temperature, at 77 K, and after a 77 K vibration was within specification.

Field-aligned currents associated with substorms in the vicinity of synchronous orbit. I - The July 5, 1979, substorm observed by SCATHA, GOES 3, and GOES 2

Magnetic field topology and field-aligned current signatures in the vicinity of synchronous orbit are examined for a substorm on July 5, 1979. Changes from taillike to dipolar field geometry propagate earthward near the midnight meridian during the substorm. The major field-aligned currents producing a negative D perturbation at and around synchronous orbit are downward currents flowing into the auroral ionosphere on L shells greater than the synchronous spacecraft L shell. Although these currents are located initially on higher L shells, they shift toward the lower L shells as the change from taillike to dipolar fields propagates earthward. There may exist upward field-aligned currents located on smaller L shells in the limited longitudinal region near the meridian where mid-latitude D perturbations change their sign.

Optical Alignment Device For Laser Communication

Optical alignment device under development enables continuous tracking and coalignment of two beams of light. Intended primarily for laser-communication station, in which transmitted beam must be aligned with received beam to ensure transmitted beam falls on receiver at other station. Expected to consume less power and be smaller and less complicated than alignment shutter and drive previously used. Prism and filter separate two overlapping collimated light beams of different wavelength or polarization. Coordinates of two beams tracked on charge-coupled device to determine degree of directional misalignment between two beams.

Effects of diatomic reagent alignment on the A + BC reaction

A computational study is reported on the A + BC - AB + C bimolecular exchange reaction in which BC is aligned with respect to the approach direction of atom A so that the initial rotational angular momentum vector of BC is either parallel (or equivalently antiparallel) or perpendicular to the initial velocity vector of A. The calculations employ a modification of the extended LEPS potential, which permits straightforward generation of noncollinear minimum energy reaction paths. The calculations clearly demonstrate that diatomic reagent alignment can markedly affect the nature of reaction product early partitioning; they also demonstrate that diatomic reagent alignment affects reactive cross sections.

Magnetic alignment of grains

This paper reviews mechanisms that have been proposed to account for alignment of dust grains in diffuse clouds and in dense clouds. The mechanisms that have proved inadequate are considered, including alignment by nonmagnetic and magnetic processes. The results thus far favor the Davis-Greenstein mechanism, in which paramagnetic relaxation of spinning grains removes components of rotation perpendicular to the magnetic field. Polarization measurements showing the alignment of grains in cool dense clouds are discussed.

Improved docking alignment system

Improved techniques are provided for the alignment of two objects. The present invention is particularly suited for 3-D translation and 3-D rotational alignment of objects in outer space. A camera is affixed to one object, such as a remote manipulator arm of the spacecraft, while the planar reflective surface is affixed to the other object, such as a grapple fixture. A monitor displays in real-time images from the camera such that the monitor displays both the reflected image of the camera and visible marking on the planar reflective surface when the objects are in proper alignment. The monitor may thus be viewed by the operator and the arm manipulated so that the reflective surface is perpendicular to the optical axis of the camera, the roll of the reflective surface is at a selected angle with respect to the camera, and the camera is spaced a pre-selected distance from the reflective surface.
