A practical approach to rotorcraft systems identification

A standard for rotorcraft system identification is proposed to facilitate the exchange of data and technology within the industry. This integrated approach utilizes simulations to validate methodology and flight data to validate simulations. A new technique allowing results obtained from separate maneuvers to be systematically combined is also presented and shown to be a fundamental tool in providing a practical approach to rotorcraft identification. The proposed methodology is evaluated using data generated by nonlinear blade-element simulation of the Rotor Systems Research Aircraft.

Development of a quantitative basis for selection of spectral features in a vegetation monitoring system

The development of an objective methodology for evaluation of alternative Landsat data preprocessing options, spectral transform features for monitoring vegetation, and feature summarization algorithms is presented. Based on estimates of spectral separability between a target class and its confusion classes, analysis of variance techniques are used to evaluate potential design options for large scale vegetation monitoring systems. Case studies are presented for early season and through the season spring small grains separation and for barley/other spring small grains separation. It is concluded that a basis for efficient, objective selection among alternative feature extraction approaches has been established for the large scale vegetation mapping/inventory problem. Although the approach has been demonstrated for the unitemporal class separability case, extensions to the multitemporal case are under development.

Ion propulsion for communications satellites

In a recent study of potential applications for electric propulsion, it was determined that ion propulsion can provide North-South stationkeeping (NSSK) for communication satellites in geosynchronous orbit with appreciably less mass than chemical propulsion. While this finding is not new, the margin of benefit over advanced chemical propulsion technology depends strongly on the ion propulsion system specifications. Full advantage must be taken of the under-utilized stored energy available from the communication satellite's batteries. This paper describes a methodology for evaluating the benefits obtained in using ion propulsion for NSSK, both in terms of the mass reduction and its economic value.

Fault-free behavior of reliable multiprocessor systems: FTMP experiments in AIRLAB

This report describes a set of experiments which were implemented on the Fault tolerant Multi-Processor (FTMP) at NASA/Langley's AIRLAB facility. These experiments are part of an effort to formulate and evaluate validation methodologies for fault-tolerant computers. This report deals with the measurement of single parameters (baselines) of a fault free system. The initial set of baseline experiments lead to the following conclusions: (1) The system clock is constant and independent of workload in the tested cases; (2) the instruction execution times are constant; (3) the R4 frame size is 40mS with some variation; (4) the frame stretching mechanism has some flaws in its implementation that allow the possibility of an infinite stretching of frame duration. Future experiments are planned. Some will broaden the results of these initial experiments. Others will measure the system more dynamically. The implementation of a synthetic workload generation mechanism for FTMP is planned to enhance the experimental environment of the system.

Evaluation of automated decision making methodologies and development of an integrated robotic system simulation: Study results

The implementation of a generic computer simulation for manipulator systems (ROBSIM) is described. The program is written in FORTRAN, and allows the user to: (1) Interactively define a manipulator system consisting of multiple arms, load objects, targets, and an environment; (2) Request graphic display or replay of manipulator motion; (3) Investigate and simulate various control methods including manual force/torque and active compliance control; and (4) Perform kinematic analysis, requirements analysis, and response simulation of manipulamotion. Previous reports have described the algorithms and procedures for using ROBSIM. These reports are superseded and additional features which were added are described. They are: (1) The ability to define motion profiles and compute loads on a common base to which manipulator arms are attached; (2) Capability to accept data describing manipulator geometry from a Computer Aided Design data base using the Initial Graphics exchange Specification format; (3) A manipulator control algorithm derived from processing the TV image of known reference points on a target; and (4) A vocabulary of simple high level task commands which can be used to define task scenarios.

Hazard assessment and cockpit presentation issues for microburst alerting systems

Issues pertaining to the development of an alerting system for microbursts in the terminal area are studied. A methodology for evaluating microburst hazard criteria is developed on the basis of batch aircraft flight simulations. A preliminary evaluation of a selected set of hazard criteria is performed. The results indicate that the total headwind change along the aircraft flight path ('total divergence') does not correlate well with the approach degradation caused by microbursts. A preliminary piloted simulator study on cockpit presentation of wind shear alerts in verbal, alphanumeric, and graphical formats is performed. Graphical alerts were found to produce better decision-making and lower crew workload, and to be greatly preferred by pilots. Alphanumeric alerts were not well liked and exhibited no advantages over standard verbal radio communications.

Affordable In-Space Transportation

Current and proposed launch systems will provide access to low-Earth orbit (LEO), and destinations beyond LEO, but the cost of delivering payloads will preclude the use of these services by many users. To develop and encourage revolutionary commercial utilization of geosynchronous orbit (GEO) and to provide an affordable means to continue NASA space science and exploration missions, the transportation costs to in-space destinations must be reduced. The principal objective of this study was to conceptually define three to four promising approaches to in-space transportation for delivery of satellites and other payloads, 3,000- to 10,000-lb class, to GEO destinations. This study established a methodology for evaluating in-space transportation systems based on life-cycle cost. The reusable concepts seemed to fare better in the evaluation than expendable, since a major driver in the life-cycle cost was the stage production cost.

Conflict Probe Concepts Analysis in Support of Free Flight

This study develops an operational concept and requirements for en route Free Flight using a simulation of the Cleveland Air Route Traffic Control Center, and develops requirements for an automated conflict probe for use in the Air Traffic Control (ATC) Centers. In this paper, we present the results of simulation studies and summarize implementation concepts and infrastructure requirements to transition from the current air traffic control system to mature Free Right. The transition path to Free Flight envisioned in this paper assumes an orderly development of communications, navigation, and surveillance (CNS) technologies based on results from our simulation studies. The main purpose of this study is to provide an overall context and methodology for evaluating airborne and ground-based requirements for cooperative development of the future ATC system.

Role of Dendritic Cells in Immune Dysfunction

The specific aims of the project were: (1) Application of the NASA bioreactor to enhance cytokine-regulated proliferation and maturation of dendritic cells (DC). (2) Compare the frequency and function of DC in normal donors and immunocompromised cancer patients. (3) Analyze the effectiveness of cytokine therapy and DC-assisted immunotherapy (using bioreactor-expanded DC) in a murine model of experimental fungal disease. Our investigations have provided new insight into DC immunobiology and have led to the development of methodology to evaluate DC in blood of normal donors and patients. Information gained from these studies has broadened our understanding of possible mechanisms involved in the immune dysfunction of space travelers and earth-bound cancer patients, and could contribute to the design of novel therapies to restore/preserve immunity in these individuals. Several new avenues of investigation were also revealed. The results of studies completed during Round 2 are summarized.

Operating Deflection Shapes for the Space Shuttle Partial Stack Rollout

In November of 2003 a rollout test was performed to gain a better understanding of the dynamic environment for the Space Shuttle during transportation from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad. This was part of a study evaluating the methodology for including the rollout dynamic loads in the Space Shuttle fatigue life predictions. The rollout test was conducted with a partial stack consisting of the Crawler Transporter, Mobile Launch Platform, and the Solid Rocket Boosters with an interconnecting crossbeam. Instrumentation included over 100 accelerometers. Data was recorded for steady state speeds, start-ups and stops, and ambient wind excitations with the vehicle at idle. This paper will describe the operating deflection shape analysis performed using the measured acceleration response data. The response data for the steady state speed runs were dominated by harmonics of the forcing frequencies, which were proportional to the vehicle speed. Assuming a broadband excitation for the wind, analyses of the data sets with the vehicle at idle were used to estimate the natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes. Comparisons of the measured modal properties with numerical predictions are presented.
