Failure Mode and Effects Analysis Summary Report

This report provides an overview of the development of failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) and its implementation as a systematic criticality and risk assessment tool supporting a quality by design (QbD) approach for FCIC research. This report also provides a high-level overview of the results for the FMEA evaluation of two feedstock preprocessing system configurations: (1) generation of pine residue materials for high-temperature pyrolysis conversion and (2) generation of corn stover materials for low-temperature conversion using deacetylation and disc mechanical refining pretreatment for fermentation to hydrocarbons. For the results presented in this report, our FMEA interviews included two approaches. The first approach was to perform FMEA interviews for the entire system of unit operations giving a wholistic system level view. The second approach consisted of detailed interviews for each individual unit operation within the system allowing for a “deep dive” into the specific failures for the individual components within the configuration. These two approaches provide different resolutions of information. The FMEA results of this report were focused on failures associated with meeting critical quality attributes (CQAs) identified for the target conversion processes for each processed feedstock type. The information gathered through the FMEA interviews include estimations of risk scores for meeting each given CQA specification, identification of the impacts for not meeting a CQA specification, capturing causes associated with material attributes and process parameters for each failure, identification of current detection methods, and speculation of potential mitigation strategies for decreasing a failure’s risk score. The complete results of all FMEA interviews are provided in the Appendices of this report.

Evaluating U.S. Natural Gas Environmental Performance

This work summarizes the U.S. Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory's (NETL) modeling and analysis of natural gas environmental performance. Over the past year, NETL updated its U.S. natural gas supply chain life cycle baseline model to incorporate 2020 data, regionalize the transmission and distribution network into six regions, incorporate improved gathering and boosting stage and distribution stage emissions factors, and assign environmental burdens among the various co-products (i.e., crude oil, natural gas liquids, natural gas) of the natural gas supply chain. The updated natural gas model helps generate more comprehensive and regionalized natural gas profiles, mapping production basins to the relevant transmission and distribution regions downstream. The work incorporates data from multiple peer reviewed measurement-based studies to achieve the objective of providing a comprehensive understanding of emissions from the U.S. natural gas supply chain. This presentation also explores future work by NETL to develop a platform that enables stakeholders to customize key parameters within the natural gas LCA model and observe the corresponding effects on the carbon intensity of the overall supply chain. The platform aims to offer a convenient method for stakeholders to obtain relevant insights from the updated model, without diving deep into the intricacies of the NETL natural gas model with hundreds of parameters and linkages.

All Hazards Approach to Grid Modernization

Resilience hazards for electric power systems are on the rise, exacerbated by both a rise in extreme weather events and manmade physical and cyber attacks. At the same time, grid modernization challenges plague the United States, covering everything from increased electrification and ambitious renewable energy targets to aging infrastructure and regulation that lags behind today’s challenges. This talk will cover an all-hazards risk based approach that addresses both rising resilience and grid modernization challenges. Examples of this approach taken for national laboratory research projects will be discussed, including a deep dive into a project that addressed black start, resynchronization, distributed control, and cybersecurity challenges for an operational microgrid up to sub-transmission voltages. As takeaways from this project are translated from demonstration scale to real-world exercises, key lessons are noted on the translation from research into practice and how this can inform risk-based research moving forward

Composable optimization and control toolkit for scientific applications

Applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) can improve the computational efficiency and scientific research output. In order to improve interoperability and reuse of AI/ML software, a composable approach is required. This talk presents a composable approach for scientific workflow development that allows seamless integration of various modules developed by independent researchers. These practices will reduce redundant software development by allowing re-use of workflow modules across projects, teams, departments and facilities. We will present three use cases that follow the composable approach namely, Scientific Optimization and Control Toolkit (SOCT), SciDAC QuantOm workflow, and JLab Nuclear Physics experimental workflows. This talk will dive deeper into SOCT and present the details of the composable code development for optimization and control algorithms using reinforcement learning.

Exotic Hadrons: A Subatomic Bestiary

Particle physicists study unfamiliar forms of matter – matter that hasn’t commonly existed in the cosmos since fractions of a second after the universe began. It has allowed scientists to dive down into an ever-decreasing set of size scales, from molecules, to atoms, to protons and neutrons, and even to quarks. The world of quarks can be a confusing one, but over the past couple decades, it has gotten even more complicated. Using powerful particle accelerators researchers have begun to create and study a truly new form of matter, one in which quarks are combined in unusual ways and one which will teach us some interesting new things about the strong nuclear force.

A Guide to Current Limiting and Stability with Grid-Forming Inverters

The electric power grid is changing. For many decades, the synchronous generator - an electromechanical device invented in 1887 - has been the workhorse and backbone of power grids across the globe. Our entire infrastructure is built around it. But times change, and so does the power grid. Since the early 21st century, we have seen a gradual shift in modern power grids away from synchronous generators to ones dominated by power electronic inverter-based resources (IBRs). Sources such as photovoltaics, wind turbines, battery storage, fuel cells, and other technologies like high-voltage DC transmission interconnections all rely on an inverter to connect and interface with the grid. They are increasingly being installed on the grid to augment, or even replace, traditional energy sources. This change is a fundamental shift that brings tremendous technical challenges and questions: Can a power grid remain stable with many more inverter-based resources? How do we avoid more blackouts on the grid? How do we keep the grid secure and resilient during disturbances? After all, power electronic inverters are nothing like the big, rotating, iron-and-copper machines that the grid heavily relies on. Many of these questions can be answered by using grid-forming (GFM) inverters, yet many research challenges remain. This document explores GFM inverters and how they can help stabilize the future grid, especially during disturbances and contingencies. It summarizes a two-year research and development fellowship program at NREL. We point interested readers to more detailed works developed during the project along the way. Let's dive in

Using "AI Poincare" to analyze non-linear integrable optics

This study dives into the applicability of using automated discovery of conserved quantities in dynamical systems relevant to accelerator physics. Specifically, we explore the performance of AI Poincaré in analyzing numerical trajectory data obtained using the McMillan system of non-linear integrable optics. A comprehensive evaluation of the algorithm's performance is conducted through diverse methodologies. These include the analysis of the estimated number of conserved quantities embedded in a dataset and the deviation of interpolated points on the inferred manifold with respect to points in actually in the dataset. the investigation identifies an optimal range of perturbation distances where the underlying manifold extraction algorithm inside AI Poincaré exhibits optimal performance. Additionally, an improved neural network architecture is proposed based on the observed results. Finally, we apply the algorithm to preliminary experimental data from the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator at Fermilab to successfully infer the number of conserved quantities even in the presence of fast decoherence of the measured signal.
