Tailored Silicone Network Architecture for Ultimate Mechanical Reinforcement

Hydrosilylation cured silicone elastomers are subject to reaction inefficiency, leading to incomplete and non-uniform crosslink networks, restricting the potential of mechanical reinforcement. This work investigates pre-synthesized, functional PDMS architectures as additives to improve ultimate mechanical performance relative to conventional single-step curing. Three custom, functional structures were prepared: a partially crosslinked PDMS scaffold (Structure A), a bottle-brush PDMS (Structure B), and a star-shaped PDMS derived from an MQ resin (Structure C). Rheological characterization was used to identify the ultimate design space and proper stoichiometric ratio for Structure A, and confirm successful formation of all structures for suitable incorporation into a base silicone formulation at 30wt%. Mechanical tests indicated that all three structures increased in ultimate tensile strength relative to their single-step counterparts, with Structure A providing additional improvements to toughness (432 vs. 258 kJ/m3) and ultimate elongation (158 vs. 115%). Furthermore, Structure B remained very soft in the unfilled state, while Structure C provided hardness (23 vs. 18 Shore A) and stiffness (780 vs. 420 kPa Young’s modulus) increases. In silica filled systems, Structure A retained increased strength but reduced elongation, while Structure B indicated strong reinforcement in terms of strength, toughness, and stiffness. Thermal analysis on the cure profiles of these materials suggested that pre-formation of network architectures enable a more complete reaction than a single-step process (15.9 vs. 15.1 J/g). Ultimately, these results indicate that tailoring PDMS architecture before the final cure can improve ultimate mechanical properties via improved network development in silicone elastomers. Furthermore, this work offers a promising strategy for designing higher-performance, more tunable silicone formulations.

Tempering and Austempering of Double Soaked Medium Manganese Steels

The addition of a tempering or austempering step to the double soaking of a 0.14C–7.17Mn (wt pct) steel was investigated in the present contribution. The double soaking heat treatment is a two-step intercritical annealing heat treatment, which generates microstructures of athermal martensite, retained austenite and ferrite when applied to medium manganese steels. Microstructures following double soaking and (aus)tempering contained a combination of retained austenite, athermal or tempered martensite, and blocky or bainitic ferrite. X-ray diffraction, dilatometry and transmission Kikuchi diffraction were utilized to investigate microstructural changes which occurred during tempering or austempering. The resulting mechanical properties were measured using uniaxial tensile testing. The double soaking plus tempering heat treatment was shown to generate an ultimate tensile strength of 1,340 MPa in combination with 28 pct total elongation while the double soaking plus austempering heat treatment resulted in an ultimate tensile strength of 1,675 MPa and total elongation of 22 pct. Overall, both novel heat treatments produced a combination of strength and ductility desired for the third generation of advanced high strength steels.

Disruption of Very-Long-Chain-Fatty Acid Synthesis Has an Impact on the Dynamics of Cellulose Synthase in Arabidopsis thaliana

In higher plants, cellulose is synthesized by membrane-spanning large protein complexes named cellulose synthase complexes (CSCs). In this study, the Arabidopsis PASTICCINO2 (PAS2) was identified as an interacting partner of cellulose synthases. PAS2 was previously characterized as the plant 3-hydroxy-acyl-CoA dehydratase, an ER membrane-localized dehydratase that is essential for very-long-chain-fatty acid (VLCFA) elongation. The pas2-1 mutants show defective cell elongation and reduction in cellulose content in both etiolated hypocotyls and light-grown roots. Although disruption of VLCFA synthesis by a genetic alteration had a reduction in VLCFA in both etiolated hypocotyls and light-grown roots, it had a differential effect on cellulose content in the two systems, suggesting the threshold level of VLCFA for efficient cellulose synthesis may be different in the two biological systems. pas2-1 had a reduction in both CSC delivery rate and CSC velocity at the PM in etiolated hypocotyls. Interestingly, Golgi but not post-Golgi endomembrane structures exhibited a severe defect in motility. Experiments using pharmacological perturbation of VLCFA content in etiolated hypocotyls strongly indicate a novel function of PAS2 in the regulation of CSC and Golgi motility. Through a combination of genetic, biochemical and cell biology studies, our study demonstrated that PAS2 as a multifunction protein has an important role in the regulation of cellulose biosynthesis in Arabidopsis hypocotyl.

The Dynamics of the Wide-angle Tailed (WAT) Galaxy Cluster A562

We present the first in-depth dynamical analysis of the archetypal wide-angle tailed (WAT) cluster A562. We have combined Gemini observations with archival data from the literature to form a sample of 76 cluster members and derived a mean redshift of 0.1088 ± 0.0004 and a velocity dispersion of 919 ± 116 km s{sup −1}. This relatively large velocity dispersion suggests either a very massive cluster (M {sub dyn} > 6.9 × 10{sup 14} M {sub ☉}) and/or a merger system. The merger model is supported by a non-Gaussian galaxy velocity distribution, an elongated spatial distribution of likely cluster members, and an elongated X-ray emitting gas. This scenario would generate the bulk flow motion of the intracluster medium that can exert enough ram pressure to bend the radio jets. Thus, our observations support the model in which a recent off-axis merger event produced the cluster wide conditions needed to shape the WAT in A562.

The 3D Kinematics of the Orion Nebula Cluster: NIRSPEC-AO Radial Velocities of the Core Population

The kinematics and dynamics of stellar and substellar populations within young, still-forming clusters provide valuable information for constraining theories of formation mechanisms. Using Keck II NIRSPEC+AO data, we have measured radial velocities for 56 low-mass sources within 4' of the core of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). We also remeasure radial velocities for 172 sources observed with SDSS/APOGEE. These data are combined with proper motions measured using HST ACS/WFPC2/WFC3IR and Keck II NIRC2, creating a sample of 135 sources with all three velocity components. The velocities measured are consistent with a normal distribution in all three components. We measure intrinsic velocity dispersions of (${\sigma }_{{v}_{\alpha }}$, ${\sigma }_{{v}_{\delta }}$, ${\sigma }_{{v}_{r}}$) = (1.64 ± 0.12, 2.03 ± 0.13, ${2.56}_{-0.17}^{+0.16}$) km s –1 . Our computed intrinsic velocity dispersion profiles are consistent with the dynamical equilibrium models from Da Rio et al. (2014) in the tangential direction but not in the line-of-sight direction, possibly indicating that the core of the ONC is not yet virialized, and may require a nonspherical potential to explain the observed velocity dispersion profiles. We also observe a slight elongation along the north–south direction following the filament, which has been well studied in previous literature, and an elongation in the line-of-sight to tangential velocity direction. These 3D kinematics will help in the development of realistic models of the formation and early evolution of massive clusters.

Stellar Metallicities from DECam $u$-band Photometry: A Study of Milky Way Ultra-Faint Dwarf Galaxies

We conducted an in-depth analysis of candidate member stars located in the peripheries of three ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxy satellites of the Milky Way: Boötes I (Boo1), Boötes II (Boo2), and Segue I (Seg1). Studying these peripheral stars has previously been difficult due to contamination from the Milky Way foreground. We used $u$-band photometry from the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) to derive metallicities to efficiently select UFD candidate member stars. This approach was validated on Boo1, where we identified both previously known and new candidate member stars beyond five half-light radii. We then applied a similar procedure to Boo2 and Seg1. Our findings hinted at evidence for tidal features in Boo1 and Seg1, with Boo1 having an elongation consistent with its proper motion and Seg1 showing some distant candidate stars, a few of which are along its elongation and proper motion. We find two Boo2 stars at large distances consistent with being candidate member stars. Using a foreground contamination rate derived from the \emph{Besan\c{c}on} Galaxy model, we ascribed purity estimates to each candidate member star. We recommend further spectroscopic studies on the newly identified high-purity members. Our technique offers promise for future endeavors to detect candidate member stars at large radii in other systems, leveraging metallicity-sensitive filters with the Legacy Survey of Space and Time and the new, narrow-band Ca HK filter on DECam.

Elementary Composite Binary and Grain Alignment Locked in Dust Growth

Abstract Planets are known to grow out of a star-encircling disk of the gas and dust inherited from an interstellar cloud; their formation is thought to begin with coagulation of submicron dust grains into aggregates, the first foundational stage of planet formation. However, with nanoscale and submicron solids unobservable directly in the interstellar medium (ISM) and protoplanetary disks, how dust grains grow is unclear, as are the morphology and structure of interstellar grains and the whereabouts and form of “missing iron.” Here we show an elementary composite binary in 3D sub-10 nm detail—and the alignments of its two subunits and nanoinclusions and a population of elongated composite grains locked in a primitive cosmic dust particle—noninvasively uncovered with phase-contrast X-ray nanotomography. The binary comprises a pair of oblate, quasi-spheroidal grains whose alignment and shape meet the astrophysical constraints on polarizing interstellar grains. Each member of the pair contains a high-density core of octahedral nanocrystals whose twin relationship is consistent with the magnetite’s diagnostic property at low temperatures, with a mantle exhibiting nanoscale heterogeneities, rounded edges, and pitted surfaces. This elongated binary evidently formed from an axially aligned collision of the two similar composite grains whose core–mantle structure and density gradients are consistent with interstellar processes and astronomical evidence for differential depletion. Our findings suggest that the ISM is threaded with dust grains containing preferentially oriented iron-rich magnetic nanocrystals that hold answers to astronomical problems from dust evolution, grain alignment, and the structure of magnetic fields to planetesimal growth.

A Wind-driven Origin for the Firework Morphology of the Supernova Remnant Pa 30

Pa 30—the likely remnant of the Galactic Type Iax supernova of 1181 AD—displays an unusual, firework-like morphology, consisting of radial filaments extending from a common center, where a white dwarf (WD) currently drives a very fast wind (speed ≳10 4 km s −1 ). We propose the filaments arose from the Rayleigh–Taylor-unstable nature of the interface between the circumstellar medium (CSM) and the shocked wind launched by the natal WD; the filaments then elongated intact due to the Kelvin–Helmholtz-stable nature of the large initial density contrast between the wind and CSM, supplemented by the slowly declining wind density profile (relative to homologously expanding ejecta). To support this interpretation, we present two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations and derive the filament properties, including their speed, density, and temperature, all of which are consistent with observations. We suggest the filaments elongate until the wind and CSM densities become comparable at the contact discontinuity, which occurs within 1–10 yr, and then truncate because the Rayleigh–Taylor instability (RTI) halts. The subsequent Kelvin–Helmholtz instability growth timescale across the current width of the filaments is longer than the age of Pa 30, so they remain intact. The filament-less central region in Pa 30 is therefore more likely a consequence of the finite timescale over which the RTI operates, rather than a wind termination shock. In general, firework-like filaments may form in other systems, provided there is a sufficiently large density contrast between the ejecta and its surroundings.

Application of a Comprehensive Lagrangian–Eulerian Spark-Ignition Model to Different Operating Conditions

Increasing engine efficiency is essential to reducing emissions, which is a priority for automakers. Unconventional modes such as boosted and highly dilute operation have the potential to increase engine efficiency but suffer from stability concerns and cyclic variability. To aid engineers in designing ignition systems that reduce cyclic variability in such engine operation modes, reliable and accurate spark-ignition models are necessary. Here, in this article, a Lagrangian–Eulerian spark-ignition (LESI) model is used to simulate electrical discharge, spark channel elongation, and ignition in inert or reacting crossflow within a combustion vessel, at different pressures, flow speeds, and dilution rates. First the model formulation is briefly revisited. Then, the experimental and simulations setups are presented. The results showcase the model’s ability to predict the secondary circuit voltage, current, and power signals, in addition to the spark channel elongation, for the inert cases, or flame front growth, for the reacting cases. The results also compare simulation spark channel and flame growth plots to experimental Schlieren images at different instants in time. This work serves to highlight LESI’s ability to predict the characteristics of discharge and ignition across a variety of operating conditions.

Glassy interphases reinforce elastomeric nanocomposites by enhancing percolation-driven volume expansion under strain

For nearly a century, introduction of nanoparticles to elastomers has yielded extraordinarily tough nanocomposites that are critical to technologies from actuators to tires. The mechanisms by which this reinforcement occurs have nevertheless remained a central open question in material science. One widely debated hypothesis posits that strong interactions between polymer and particles induce "glassy bridges" that cement particles into a cohesive percolating network that resists elongation. Here, molecular dynamics simulations show that glassy particle shells do not primarily provide elongational cohesion. Instead, they amplify an underlying mechanism wherein competition between filler and elastomer networks causes the elastomer's volume to increase on deformation. This induces contributions from the elastomer's bulk modulus, which is of order 1000 times larger than its Young's modulus. These findings establish a unified understanding of low-strain reinforcement in filled elastomers as emanating from volumetric competition between coexisting particulate and elastomeric networks. This reframes and unifies our understanding of low-strain reinforcement, provides a clear-cut diagnostic for the presence of glassy bridging, and offers a new design principle for tough elastomeric nanocomposites.

Gating interactions steer loop conformational changes in the active site of the L1 metallo-β-lactamase

β-Lactam antibiotics are the most important and widely used antibacterial agents across the world. However, the widespread dissemination of β-lactamases among pathogenic bacteria limits the efficacy of β-lactam antibiotics. This has created a major public health crisis. The use of β-lactamase inhibitors has proven useful in restoring the activity of β-lactam antibiotics, yet, effective clinically approved inhibitors against class B metallo-β-lactamases are not available. L1, a class B3 enzyme expressed by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia , is a significant contributor to the β-lactam resistance displayed by this opportunistic pathogen. Structurally, L1 is a tetramer with two elongated loops, α3-β7 and β12-α5, present around the active site of each monomer. Residues in these two loops influence substrate/inhibitor binding. To study how the conformational changes of the elongated loops affect the active site in each monomer, enhanced sampling molecular dynamics simulations were performed, Markov State Models were built, and convolutional variational autoencoder-based deep learning was applied. The key identified residues (D150a, H151, P225, Y227, and R236) were mutated and the activity of the generated L1 variants was evaluated in cell-based experiments. The results demonstrate that there are extremely significant gating interactions between α3-β7 and β12-α5 loops. Taken together, the gating interactions with the conformational changes of the key residues play an important role in the structural remodeling of the active site. These observations offer insights into the potential for novel drug development exploiting these gating interactions.

Fiber Orientation Evaluation in Reinforced Composites using Digital Image Correlation

This paper presents an innovative nondestructive evaluation (NDE) approach to evaluate fiber orientation in fiber reinforced composites utilizing digital image correlation (DIC). Fiber orientation is a crucial factor that influences the mechanical and thermal properties of the composite. Conventional methods for fiber orientation evaluation and measurement are either destructive, which are typically laborious. NDE methods such as micro computed tomography are expensive and limited in sample size. In this work, we evaluate two methods of excitation of the composite, namely-quasistatic mechanical loading and thermal cycling. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) has been employed in conjunction for fiber orientation measurements. The DIC system is able to measure the fiber orientation by capturing 19x higher strain in the transverse direction of the reinforced fiber axis during excitation. The larger strain occurs in the transverse direction due to larger elongation in the surrounding polymer matrix than the fiber which resists elongation. This innovative method is within the preliminary stage and has been developed to fill the gap/limitations of other NDE methods.
