Pressure-Volume-Temperature (PVT) Gauging of an Isothermal Cryogenic Propellant Tank Pressurized with Gaseous Helium

Results are presented for pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) gauging of a liquid oxygen/liquid nitrogen tank pressurized with gaseous helium that was supplied by a high-pressure cryogenic tank simulating a cold helium supply bottle on a spacecraft. The fluid inside the test tank was kept isothermal by frequent operation of a liquid circulation pump and spray system, and the propellant tank was suspended from load cells to obtain a high-accuracy reference standard for the gauging measurements. Liquid quantity gauging errors of less than 2 percent of the tank volume were obtained when quasi-steady-state conditions existed in the propellant and helium supply tanks. Accurate gauging required careful attention to, and corrections for, second-order effects of helium solubility in the liquid propellant plus differences in the propellant/helium composition and temperature in the various plumbing lines attached to the tanks. On the basis of results from a helium solubility test, a model was developed to predict the amount of helium dissolved in the liquid as a function of cumulative pump operation time. Use of this model allowed correction of the basic PVT gauging calculations and attainment of the reported gauging accuracy. This helium solubility model is system specific, but it may be adaptable to other hardware systems.

Sintering Characteristics of Multilayered Thermal Barrier Coatings Under Thermal Gradient and Isothermal High Temperature Annealing Conditions

Pyrochlore oxides have most of the relevant attributes for use as next generation thermal barrier coatings such as phase stability, low sintering kinetics and low thermal conductivity. One of the issues with the pyrochlore oxides is their lower toughness and therefore higher erosion rate compared to the current state-of-the-art TBC material, yttria (6 to 8 wt%) stabilized zirconia (YSZ). In this work, sintering characteristics were investigated for novel multilayered coating consisted of alternating layers of pyrochlore oxide viz Gd2Zr2O7 and t' low k (rare earth oxide doped YSZ). Thermal gradient and isothermal high temperature (1316 C) annealing conditions were used to investigate sintering and cracking in these coatings. The results are then compared with that of relevant monolayered coatings and a baseline YSZ coating.

Effects of CMAS Application on the Isothermal and Gradient Thermal Cycling Behavior of a Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 EBC

Environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) are critical to the continued advancement of gas turbine hot section materials technology. EBCs are required to protect Si-based ceramics such as silicon carbide fiber-reinforced silicon carbide (SiC/SiC) ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) from oxidation and corrosion in the combustion environment. One of the current challenges concerning EBC lifetime is the thermochemical reactions between calcium-magnesium-aluminosilicate (CMAS) deposits and the EBC that leads to changes in both composition and stress state. These changes can severely reduce the integrity of the EBC leading to crack formation, delamination, and spallation. Current techniques for evaluating CMAS in the laboratory rely on the pre-application of CMAS. Two commonly used application methods to deposit CMAS on EBC materials are tape-casting and air spray. In both methods, the CMAS is applied to the EBC surface at ambient temperature, and then subject to a heat treatment process for binder burnout. The purpose of this study is to compare the tape-cast and air spray methods on the CMAS corrosion of an ytterbium disilicate (Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 ) EBC subject to isothermal, and gradient thermal cycling. The results highlight if any differences exist in the CMAS infiltration kinetics between the two application methods.

Conductivity space isotherm behavior in quantum anomalous Hall devices

The quantum Hall effect (QHE) has enhanced accessibility to measure and disseminate electrical units, owed in part to the recently redefined International System of Units in 2019. Graphene remains one of the preferred options to realize the ohm despite the limitations of high magnetic fields to produce a robust QHE. Topological insulators, on the other hand, show promise in providing quantized resistance via the quantum anomalous Hall effect, a phenomenon that removes the need for magnetic fields during operation. To optimize future devices for metrological applications, it is important to gain a better understanding of magnetically doped topological insulators like Cr-doped bismuth antimony telluride. The application of differential conductivity space analyses offers a more sensitive way to analyze the data and distinguish between 2D and 3D transport behaviors. This is particularly important in thin films, where the transition between 2D and 3D behavior can be subtle. The ability to confidently determine the dimensionality of the transport is crucial for selecting appropriate theoretical models for future device optimization. Furthermore, this work identifies variable range hopping as the dominant transport mechanism in the 2D regime using a rigorous statistical analysis (via the Bayes factor). These elements assist in the understanding of microscopic processes that govern charge transport in these materials.
