BICEP/Keck. XVII. Line-of-sight Distortion Analysis: Estimates of Gravitational Lensing, Anisotropic Cosmic Birefringence, Patchy Reionization, and Systematic Errors

We present estimates of line-of-sight distortion fields derived from the 95 and 150 GHz data taken by BICEP2, BICEP3, and the Keck Array up to the 2018 observing season, leading to cosmological constraints and a study of instrumental and astrophysical systematics. Cosmological constraints are derived from three of the distortion fields concerning gravitational lensing from large-scale structure, polarization rotation from magnetic fields or an axion-like field, and the screening effect of patchy reionization. We measure an amplitude of the lensing power spectrum ${A}_{L}^{\phi \phi }=0.95\pm 0.20$. We constrain polarization rotation, expressed as the coupling constant of a Chern–Simons electromagnetic term g aγ ≤ 2.6 × 10 -2 /H I , where H I is the inflationary Hubble parameter, and an amplitude of primordial magnetic fields smoothed over 1 Mpc B 1Mpc ≤ 6.6 nG at 95 GHz. We constrain the rms of optical depth fluctuations in a simple "crinkly surface" model of patchy reionization, finding A τ < 0.19 (2σ) for the coherence scale of L c = 100. We show that all of the distortion fields of the 95 and 150 GHz polarization maps are consistent with simulations including lensed ΛCDM, dust, and noise, with no evidence for instrumental systematics. In some cases, the EB and TB quadratic estimators presented here are more sensitive than our previous map-based null tests at identifying and rejecting spurious B-modes that might arise from instrumental effects. Finally, we verify that the standard deprojection filtering in the BICEP/Keck data processing is effective at removing temperature to polarization leakage.

A laser technique for characterizing the geometry of plant canopies

The interception of solar power by the canopy is investigated as a function of solar zenith angle (time), component of the canopy, and depth into the canopy. The projected foliage area, cumulative leaf area, and view factors within the canopy are examined as a function of the same parameters. Two systems are proposed that are capable of describing the geometrical aspects of a vegetative canopy and of operation in an automatic mode. Either system would provide sufficient data to yield a numerical map of the foliage area in the canopy. Both systems would involve the collection of large data sets in a short time period using minimal manpower.

The 2004 Opposition of Ceres Observed with Adaptive Optics on the VLT

The close opposition of Ceres in January 2004 has been observed with the NACO adaptive optics system on the VLT. Both imaging and spectroscopy were performed in the 1.1-4.1 m range. Extensive longitudinal coverage was acquired during a three days run, with spatial resolution up to 50 km in imaging mode. The scientific objectives are 1) to provide the first IR map of Ceres; 2) to map possible compositional variations at the surface. Only imaging results are presented here.

I Know I'm Right, But Does My Phone?

Transportation is the largest source of green-house gas emissions in the United States. Reducing transportation emissions depends on human travel behavior, which relies on local land use and planning. Travel diaries, consisting of sequences of trips between places for a particular individual, are typically used to instrument human travel behavior. However, these diaries are only as accurate as the underlying methods used to construct them. Travel diary algorithms have been a popular research topic since the advent of GPS tracking surveys. Mode inference algorithms in particular have been well represented in literature. However, these algorithms have typically been validated using prompted recall of pre-segmented trips, which doesn't account for segmentation error, thus disregarding the continuity of mode inference. Furthermore, phone operating systems and applications have adopted battery-conserving techniques, but we are not aware of prior work that has characterized the resulting data collection errors or evaluated procedures to mitigate them. We introduce a framework to evaluate accuracy of trip length computations and mode inference. We develop a temporal alignment procedure in analyzing continuous mode-segmented trajectories for groups of trips. We then apply our framework to evaluate an example set of travel diary algorithms from the open-source OpenPATH travel diary platform against MobilityNet, a public dataset containing information from three artificial timelines that cover 15 different travel modes. Our results show that inference based on an integration with map features results in weighted F_1 scores of 0.60 (iOS) and 0.74 (android). We also show that OpenPATH tends to under count trip length, with mean of signed relative error of -0.0438 on android and -0.0704 on iOS. We hope that other travel diary algorithms will be evaluated using this standardized process, and that the results used to understand and improve the state-of-the-art in this field.

A statistical model to predict ignition probability

Ignition capability is a critical design constraint for aeronautical gas turbines. However the current trend toward overall lean burn is detrimental to the engine ignition and relight and the ignition system must be adapted to ensure a fast and reliable light-round in all circumstances. As ignition is a stochastic phenomenon, the optimization of an ignition system requires to build ignition probability maps, which is difficult and costly with either experiment or numerical simulation as both require many tests. Here, this work proposes a model to predict the ignition probability map, knowing only flow statistics in non-reacting conditions, i.e., with only one test. The originality of the model is to construct statistics of the flame kernel trajectory, which are then combined with local flow indicators to evaluate the ignition probability at the considered sparking location. Application to a swirled burner operated in premixed, non-premixed and spray combustion modes illustrates the model concepts and demonstrates its ability to recover the experimental ignition map with good accuracy.

Geological Map of the Fredegonde (V-57) Quadrangle, Venus

The area of V-57, the Fredegonde quadrangle (50-75degS, 60-120degE, Fig.1), is located within the eastern portion of Lada Terra within the topographic province of midlands (0-2 km above MPR [1,2]). Midlands form the most abundant portion of the surface of Venus and are characterized by diverse sets of units and structures [3-11]. The area of the Fredegonde quadrangle is in contact with the elevated portion of Lada Terra to the W and with the lowland of Aino Planitia to the NE. The transitions of the mid-lands to the lowlands and highlands are, thus, one of the main themes of the geology within the V-57 quadrangle. The character of the transitions and distribution and sequence of units/structures in the midlands are crucially important in understanding the time and modes of formation of this topographic province. The most prominent features in the map area are linear deformational zones consisting of swarms of grooves and graben and large coronae. The zones characterize the central and NW portions of the map area and represent regionally important, broad (up to 100s km wide) ridges that are 100s m high. Relatively small (100s km across, 100s m deep) equidimensional basins occur between the corona-groove-chains in the west and border the central chain from the east. Here we describe units that make up the surface within the V-57 quadrangle and present a summary of our geological map that shows the areal distribution of the major groups of units.

Thailand national programme of the earth resources technology satellite

The author has identified the following significant results. Accomplishments include the identification of a series of active alluvial fans along the margins of the Central Plain, the compilation of crop resources maps of central and eastern Thailand, and evaluation of the Purdue/LARS printout using unsupervised mode of an area near Bangkok. Results from LANDSAT 1 imagery and ground truth survey showed that Thailand existing forest in 1973 covered an area of approximately 37% of total land area. The last countrywide survey using aerial photographs at 1:60,000 scale conducted in 1961 gave the figure of 58%. Experience has shown many advantages of LANDSAT imagery over the conventional aerial photography in locating faults and fractures in the preparation of tectonic maps. Several rock types can also be identified from LANDSAT imagery.

Identifying Majorana vortex modes via nonlocal transport

The combination of two-dimensional Dirac surface states with s-wave superconductivity is expected to generate localized topological Majorana zero modes in vortex cores. Putative experimental signatures of these modes have been reported for heterostructures of proximitized topological insulators, iron-based superconductors or certain transition metal dichalcogenides. Despite these efforts, the Majorana nature of the observed excitation is still under debate. In this work, we propose to identify the presence of Majorana vortex modes using a nonlocal transport measurement protocol originally employed for one-dimensional settings. In the case of an isolated subgap state, the protocol provides a spatial map of the ratio of local charge- and probability-density which offers a clear distinction between Majorana and ordinary fermionic modes. We show that these distinctive features survive in the experimentally relevant case of hybridizing vortex core modes.

The Canadian Galactic Emission Mapper (CGEM) A Cosmic Microwave Foreground Experiment

The Canadian Galactic Emission Mapper (CGEM) is a 4-meter single-dish radio telescope located at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory (DRAO) in Penticton, Canada. CGEM is designed to map polarized Galactic synchrotron emission across the entire northern sky at 8-10 GHz with 1 MHz frequency resolution and ∼ 0.5 degree angular resolution. Its goal is to obtain high-fidelity, low-noise maps of polarized Galactic synchrotron radiation, at frequencies where synchrotron dominates, in order to provide a reliable template for CMB B−mode foreground cleaning. We will show on sky performance of CGEM’s single-pixel azimuthally-symmetric telescope, its coherent, dual-polarized radiometer, and show maps made from commissioning data from the first few months of operation.

Appendices for Geothermal Exploration Artificial Intelligence Report

The Geothermal Exploration Artificial Intelligence looks to use machine learning to spot geothermal identifiers from land maps. This is done to remotely detect geothermal sites for the purpose of energy uses. Such uses include enhanced geothermal system (EGS) applications, especially regarding finding locations for viable EGS sites. This submission includes the appendices and reports formerly attached to the Geothermal Exploration Artificial Intelligence Quarterly and Final Reports. The appendices below include methodologies, results, and some data regarding what was used to train the Geothermal Exploration AI. The methodology reports explain how specific anomaly detection modes were selected for use with the Geo Exploration AI. This also includes how the detection mode is useful for finding geothermal sites. Some methodology reports also include small amounts of code. Results from these reports explain the accuracy of methods used for the selected sites (Brady Desert Peak and Salton Sea). Data from these detection modes can be found in some of the reports, such as the Mineral Markers Maps, but most of the raw data is included the DOE Database which includes Brady, Desert Peak, and Salton Sea Geothermal Sites.

Exploring Excited State Proton Transfer Dynamics upon Ultraviolet Excitation

Excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) has been investigated in two prototypical systems─salicylaldehyde azine (SAA) and 1,5-dihydroxyanthraquinone (DHAQ)─using transient absorption spectroscopy upon ultraviolet excitation into the less studied higher excited (S n ) manifold. Excitation with sub-30 fs pulses and broadband visible probing has allowed for direct measurement of the ESIPT rate. In conjunction with steady-state measurements and TD-DFT calculations, a complete delineation of the ultrafast photophysics has been carried out. In SAA, ESIPT remains ultrafast (∼30 fs), consistent with previous S 1 excitation studies. Coherent vibrational beats maps reveal significant wavelength dependence, however. Theoretical analysis suggests that the observed modes and their intensities in coherent vibrational spectra are modulated by the nature of the electronically excited state. In DHAQ, the first direct observation of ESIPT presents a time-constant of ∼85 fs, and a slower component of 9 ps, akin to previous reports on double-proton transfer systems. Collectively, the results suggest that while the ultrafast ESIPT rate remains largely invariant vis-à-vis the excitation energy, the product yield, as well as accompanying coherent oscillations, may be substantively altered, owing to the existence of alternative decay pathways.

Experimental Observation of Magnetic Island Heteroclinic Bifurcation in Tokamaks

We report empirical observations of magnetic island heteroclinic bifurcation for the first time. This behavior is observed in interacting coupled 2/1 tearing modes in the core of a DIII-D tokamak plasma. Poincaré maps constrained by measured magnetic amplitudes and phasing show bifurcation from heteroclinic to homoclinic topology in the 2/1 island as the 4/2 relative amplitude (R 4/2 ) decreases. Initially, the local electron temperature peak in the 2/1 island splits, consistent with two O points. As R 4/2 decreases a single peak forms, consistent with one O point. Lastly, these call for developing tearing stability theory and control solutions for heteroclinic islands in tokamaks.

Single-molecule infrared spectroscopy with scanning tunneling microscopy

Probing vibrations at the single-molecule level is essential for achieving bond-specific chemical control in realistic heterogeneous environments. Here, we introduce a new measurement scheme that integrates frequency-tunable infrared excitation with scanning tunneling microscopy to characterize vibration-mediated nuclear motions of single molecules. We first validated the technique by monitoring the infrared-induced rotation of the ethynyl radical and then applied it to mapping pyrrolidine’s conformational dynamics. The resulting broadband spectra captured fundamental vibrational modes together with rich overtone and combination bands inaccessible by conventional methods, which we confirmed with isotopic substitutions. Density functional theory calculations showed that delocalized modes coupled with pyrrolidine ring puckering drive the structural transition, revealing altered selection rules compared with traditional infrared spectroscopy. Here, this new experimental platform enables molecular vibrations and transformations to be probed with atomic precision.

Effective use of ERTS multisensor data in the Great Plains

The author has identified the following significant results. In the case of rangelands, manipulation of the digitized material from photographic recordings revealed that the mode-seeking program using only one vegetation group gave the best output map. Efficient mapping of this imagery will possibly require the use of narrow band filters. In the case of cropland, the results obtained with the K-class classifier are shown. Using one feature, the highest percent correct classification was obtained using band 6. Using two features, best results were obtained using bands 4 and 6 and 5 and 6. Specific results obtained with various bands are discussed. In the case of land systems, the eroded shale soils located along the Missouri River reservoirs in South Dakota above the Fort Randall and Big Bend Dams are clearly visible on the IR bands of ERTS scene 17 August, 1972, image description number 1025-16551. The appearance of various types of soil formations is described.

The microprocessor based system provided all avionic functions, including flight management, navigation, and lateral flight control. The mode selection was interactive with the pilot. The system used a navigation map data base to provide operation in the current and planned air traffic control environment. The system design included software design listings for some of the required modules. The distributed microcomputer uses the IEEE 488 bus for interconnecting the microcomputer and sensors.

Stratospheric ozone variations in the equatorial region as seen in Stratiospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment data

An analysis is made of equatorial ozone variations for 5 years, 1984-1989, using the ozone profile data derived from the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment II (SAGE II) instrument. Attention is focused on the annual cycle and also on interannual variability, particularly the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) and El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variations in the lower stratosphere, where the largest contribution to total column ozone takes place. The annual variation in zonal mean total ozone around the equator is composed of symmetric and asymmetric modes with respect to the equator, with maximum contributions being around 19 km for the symmetric mode and around 25 km for the asymmetric mode. The persistent zonal wavenumber 1 structure observed by the total ozone mapping spectrometer over the equator is almost missing in the SAGE-derived column amounts integrated in the stratosphere, suggesting a significant contribution from tropospheric ozone. Interannual variations in the equatorial ozone are dominated by the QBO above 20 km and the ENSO-related variation below 20 km. The ozone QBO is characterized by zonally uniform phase changes in association with the zonal wind QBO in the equatorial lower stratosphere. The ENSO-related ozone variation consists of both the east-west vacillation and the zonally uniform phase variation. During the El Nino event, the east-west contrast with positive (negative) deviations in the eastern (western) hemisphere is conspicuous, while the decreasing tendency of the zonal mean values is maximum at the same time.
