Dark Energy Survey Year 6 results: Clustering redshifts and importance sampling of self-organized-maps 𝑛⁡(𝑧) realizations for 3 × 2 ⁢pt samples

This work is part of a series establishing the redshift framework for the 3 × 2 ⁢pt analysis of the Dark Energy Survey Year 6 (DES Y6). For DES Y6, photometric redshift distributions are estimated using self-organizing maps (SOMs), calibrated with spectroscopic and many-band photometric data. To overcome limitations from color-redshift degeneracies and incomplete spectroscopic coverage, we enhance this approach by incorporating clustering-based redshift constraints (clustering-z, or WZ) from angular cross-correlations with BOSS and eBOSS galaxies and eBOSS quasar samples. We define a WZ likelihood and apply importance sampling to a large ensemble of SOM-derived 𝑛⁡(𝑧) realizations, selecting those consistent with the clustering measurements to produce a posterior sample for each lens and source bin. The analysis uses angular scales corresponding to 1.5–5 Mpc to optimize signal-to-noise ratio while mitigating modeling uncertainties and marginalizes over redshift-dependent galaxy bias and other systematics informed by the N-body simulation CARDINAL . While a sparser spectroscopic reference sample limits WZ constraining power at 𝑧 >1.1, particularly for source bins, we demonstrate that combining SOM with WZ improves redshift accuracy and enhances the overall cosmological constraining power of DES Y6. As a result, we estimate an improvement in 𝑆 8 of approximately 10% for cosmic shear and 3 ×2⁢pt analysis, primarily due to the WZ calibration of the source samples.

SOLPS-ITER modeling of a dedicated divertor for negative triangularity operation on DIII-D

The design of a new dedicated divertor for negative triangularity (NT) operation on DIII-D with neutral baffles and pumping is informed by SOLPS-ITER transport modeling. This dedicated NT divertor is the latest step in a progression of NT shapes with various divertor characteristics explored on DIII-D, including NT shapes at reduced triangularity and a campaign with stronger shaping that included new armored components on the outboard side. SOLPS simulations played a key role in these divertor designs. Interpretive simulations, using cross-field diffusivities constrained by experimental data in the NT Shelf shape were used to inform the design of the 2023 armor campaign components. A similar procedure used armor campaign data to predict conditions for the dedicated NT divertor. The predictive simulations were used to assess the divertor fluxes, detachment threshold, pumped flux, and neutral leakage. For the dedicated NT divertor, SOLPS simulations and two-point-modeling were used to show the relative impact of magnetic topology (mainly longer connection length) and divertor closure on the divertor conditions relative to the armor campaign. It is predicted that the dedicated NT divertor reaches detachment (measured by target ion flux rollover) at a lower upstream density (≈(1.75−−2.4)×1⁢019m−3) as compared to the armor campaign shape. For the preliminary design geometry, divertor closure reduces the neutral leakage by ≈10%. Parametric optimization indicating further ≈20%–60% improvement in the leakage flux and recycled flux crossing the pump entrance is possible for relatively minor changes to the divertor and baffle layout.

Experimental investigation of a closed vapour box module for a divertor-like configuration in Magnum-PSI

Efficient management of extreme heat fluxes in the divertor region to extend the lifetime of the components remains a critical challenge for the realization of nuclear fusion-based power plants. Among the alternative concepts explored for the divertor region, the use of liquid metals, particularly lithium, is of interest due its ability to dissipate the incoming plasma heat flux through the vapour shielding effect (VS). In this work, we experimentally investigated a ‘closed’ configuration of a dedicated Vapour Box Module (VBM) in the linear plasma device Magnum-PSI. The goal of the experiments is to simulate the vapour box divertor environment conditions and assess its performance in terms of power mitigation and redistribution and lithium confinement. Initial testing without Li demonstrated the efficacy of a closed VBM structure in inducing detachment via neutral gas accumulation. Apertures which enabled non-condensing gas to be effectively pumped while ensuring lithium condensed on the inner surfaces were therefore added. With a lithium capillary porous structure target used, lithium is directly vaporized by the plasma, forming a dense lithium vapour cloud that interacts with the incoming plasma. This resulted in a significant reduction of the target temperature of at least 48%, together with a temperature locking effect, a phenomenon typically observed in the VS regime. Lithium vapour confinement within the VBM was strongly correlated with the wall temperature. Relatively cold walls promoted Li re-condensation and therefore improved Li confinement, although with the expected trade-off of increased hydrogenic retention on lithium-wetted surfaces. As the wall temperature increased, the confinement efficiency decreased, consistent with reduced Li re-condensation and thermally activated Li–H chemistry and remobilization at the walls. Diagnostic measurements through embedded thermocouples and calorimetry revealed that lithium vaporization and re-condensation processes also playedsignificant roles in plasma power dissipation. The results advance the case for a closed divertor chamber with direct lithium evaporation from the strike-points as a viable method to manage divertor heat fluxes in future fusion reactors.

The Dark Energy Survey supernova program: a reanalysis of cosmology results and evidence for evolving dark energy with an updated Type Ia supernova calibration

We present improved cosmological constraints from a re-analysis of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) 5-year sample of Type Ia supernovae (DES-SN5YR). This re-analysis includes an improved photometric cross-calibration, recent white dwarf observations to cross-calibrate between DES and low-redshift surveys, retraining the salt3 light-curve model and fixing a numerical approximation in the host-galaxy colour law. Our fully recalibrated sample, which we call DES-Dovekie, comprises ~1600 likely Type Ia SNe from DES and ~200 low-redshift SNe from other surveys. With DES-Dovekie, we obtain Ω m = 0.330 ± 0.015 in flat Lambda-cold dark matter (ΛCDM) which changes Ω m by –0.022 compared to DES-SN5YR. Combining DES-Dovekie with cosmic microwave background data from Planck, Atacama Cosmology Telescope, and South Pole Telescope and the DESI DR2 measurements in a flat CDM cosmology, we find ω 0 = –0.803 ± 0.054 and ω a = –0.72 ± 0.21. Our results hold a significance of 3.2σ, reduced from 4.2σ for DES-SN5YR, to reject the null hypothesis that the data are compatible with the cosmological constant. This significance is equivalent to a Bayesian model preference odds of approximately 5:1 in favour of the flat ω 0 ω a CDM model. Using generally accepted thresholds for model preference, our updated data exhibits only a weak preference for evolving dark energy.

Twist Engineering of Anisotropic Excitonic and Optical Properties of a Two-Dimensional Magnetic Semiconductor

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnetic semiconductors are a new class of quantum materials for studying the emergent physics of excitons and spins in the 2D limit. Twist engineering provides a powerful tool to manipulate the fundamental properties of 2D vdW materials. Here, in this work, we show that twist engineering of the anisotropic ferromagnetic monolayer semiconductor CrSBr leads to bilayer magnetic semiconductors with continuously tunable magnetic moment, dielectric anisotropy, exciton energy, and linear dichroism. We furthermore provide a model for exciton energy in the media with tunable anisotropy. These results advance fundamental studies of 2D vdW materials and open doors to applications to nano-optics, twistronics, and spintronics.

Thermally induced mimicry of quantum cluster excitations and implications for the magnetic transition in FePSe 3

In two dimensional magnets, the interplay of thermal fluctuations and spin anisotropy control the existence of long-range magnetic order. In the van der Waals antiferromagnets FePX 3 , orbital degeneracy in the 𝑡 2⁢𝑔 levels of the Fe 2+ ions in octahedral coordination yields strong uniaxial anisotropy, which stabilizes magnetic order up to 𝑇 ≈ 100 K. Recent inelastic neutron scattering measurements around the magnetic ordering transition have shown the existence of a broad spectrum of magnetic fluctuations with nontrivial momentum dependence, which has been interpreted as evidence for localized entangled cluster excitations. In this paper, we offer an alternative interpretation using classical nonlinear spin dynamics simulations. We present stochastic Landau Lifshitz dynamics simulations that reproduce the neutron scattering measurements of Chen et al. [npj Quantum Mater. 9, 40 (2024)] on FePSe 3 . These calculations faithfully explain the dynamical structure factor's momentum and energy dependence and point to a classical origin for the excitations observed in neutron spectroscopy and that the order-disorder transition can be understood in terms of thermal fluctuations overcoming the anisotropy energy.

Achieving uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in Ce2⁢Fe17⁢N3 through Co- and Sm-substitution

Th2⁢Zn17−type structure-based permanent magnets, such as Sm2⁢Fe17⁢N3, offer strong potential as alternatives to neodymium magnets (NdFeB), but their practical use is limited by phase stability and the scarcity of Sm. Ce-based counterparts, particularly Ce2⁢Fe17⁢N3, are attractive low-cost candidates, yet their intrinsic planar magnetic anisotropy restricts permanent-magnet performance. Here, we induce uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in Ce2⁢Fe17⁢N3 through two approaches: (i) Co substitution on the Fe sublattice and (ii) partial substitution of Ce with Sm. Combined density functional theory and experimental results show that both strategies modify the 3⁢𝑑–4⁢𝑓 interactions and band filling, yielding magnetization values up to ∼1.2T and magnetocrystalline anisotropy energies exceeding 1MJ/m3 for Co-alloyed compositions, with significantly larger anisotropy achieved upon Sm substitution. In addition, the Sm-substituted Ce2⁢Fe17⁢N3 samples exhibit enhanced high-temperature stability compared to Sm2⁢Fe17⁢N3. These findings demonstrate that Ce2⁢Fe17⁢N3-based alloys can deliver magnetic performance suitable for permanent-magnet applications while reducing cost and reliance on critical rare-earth elements, and they provide practical design guidelines for rare-earth-lean magnets for energy and industrial applications.

Dust Survival in Galactic Winds

This repository contains three-dimensional volumetric data from an Eulerian hydrodynamical simulation (conducted on a uniform Cartesian grid) generated by the Cholla hydrodynamics code. The datasets contain snapshots (full-grid, projections, and slices) in the HDF5 format of a multi-phase medium in which a hot, diffuse, dust-free background wind accelerates a cool, dense cloud of gas and dust. This scenario is intended to represent a supernova-driven galactic outflow, in which hot supernova winds are thought to accelerate cool interstellar medium material out of the galactic disk into the surrounding circumgalactic medium. There are three separate datasets for simulations corresponding to three cloud evolutionary scenarios: long-term cloud survival (surv), marginal cloud survival (disr), and cloud destruction (dest). Projection and slice images of the simulations are also included in this repository.

Emergence of low-energy spin waves in superconducting electron-doped cuprates

In order to fully utilize the technological potential of unconventional superconductors, an enhanced understanding of the superconducting mechanism is necessary. In the best performing superconductors, the cuprates, superconductivity is intimately linked with magnetism, although the details of this coupling remain elusive. Here, we address this gap by studying the electron-doped cuprate Nd 1.85 Ce 0.15 CuO 4−δ that has an antiferromagnetic ground state when synthesized and only becomes superconducting after a reductive annealing process. Using neutron spectroscopy, we show that the as-grown crystal exhibits a large spin pseudogap in the magnetic fluctuation spectrum. Annealing removes defects introduced by the commonly employed synthesis method and significantly reduces the spin pseudogap. While the spin pseudogap in the annealed sample likely arises from superconductivity, in the as-grown sample it results from the absence of long-wavelength spin waves. These results reveal a direct connection between defects, magnetism, and superconductivity, offering new insight into the mechanisms underlying high-temperature superconductivity and guiding the design of improved superconducting materials.

Mitigating electrochemical degradation in CsPbBr{sub 3} gamma detectors by organic and inorganic encapsulation.

CsPbBr3 perovskite semiconductors have emerged as a leading candidate for nextgeneration radiation detectors because of their exceptional charge transport properties, defect tolerance, and record-breaking sensitivity and energy resolution. Their long-term stability, however, is hindered by electrode-driven electrochemical decomposition, which is accelerated by moisture- and oxygen-assisted ion migration during operation. Here, we investigated organic and inorganic encapsulation strategies as both environmental barriers and means to suppress interfacial degradation pathways. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) of Al2O3 provided a conformal passivation layer that blocked environmental ingress, suppressed ionic diffusion, reduced leakage current, enhanced energy resolution and expanded the operational electric-field window beyond 5 kV∙cm1 . By contrast, organic encapsulants such as paraffin wax and polystyrene slowed moisture diffusion but did not suppress interfacial reactions, with wax extending stability to over 90 days. These results show that ALD-Al2O3 suppresses dominant interfacial degradation pathways, enabling stable, high-field operation and advancing the practical deployment of CsPbBr3 γ-ray detectors.
