Bubble memory module

Design, fabrication and test of partially populated prototype recorder using 100 kilobit serial chips is described. Electrical interface, operating modes, and mechanical design of several module configurations are discussed. Fabrication and test of the module demonstrated the practicality of multiplexing resulting in lower power, weight, and volume. This effort resulted in the completion of a module consisting of a fully engineered printed circuit storage board populated with 5 of 8 possible cells and a wire wrapped electronics board. Interface of the module is 16 bits parallel at a maximum of 1.33 megabits per second data rate on either of two interface buses.

Design definition of a microwave power reception and conversion system for use on a high altitude powered platform

The design definition of a microwave power reception and conversion system for use on high altitude powered platform is presented. The study includes an initial design, construction and test effort on a thin film, printed circuit rectenna. A study of a low altitude demonstration of an airborne rectenna was made starting with the assumption that a fifty foot mechanically steerable parabolic reflector at the Wallops Flight Center would be retrofitted with a low microwave power source consisting of a five kilowatt commercially available magnetron and that a small blimp would be used to support the rectenna.

An automated process sequence using preformed cell contacts and interconnects with a total cost of $0.64 per peak watt in 1986

A process sequence is described which utilizes a preformed metal mesh electrostatically bonded to each cell to provide the front contact. Cells of 12 percent AM1 efficiency have been produced using this scheme. This method also permits access to both contacts on the cell from the back side. In addition, low cost cell interconnection is accomplished using a flexible 'printed circuit' sheet which is ultrasonically bonded to the cell contacts. The complete process sequence as well as automated equipment which also uses ion implantation and pulse annealing is described. The total cost for module fabrication is estimated at $0.64 per peak watt for a 30 MW/year plant.

Preliminary design of 19-element feed cluster for a large F/D reflector antenna

The design of a low sidelobe 19 element microstrip cluster and its distribution network is described. The problem of spillover illumination of an adjacent reflector in a multiple aperture reflector system is addressed. A practical implementation of the array is presented which requires only one printed circuit board for the distribution network with the potential for being easily tailored to a wide range of excitation distributions.

Magnetic heading reference

Devices are disclosed for vectorially summing two signals. In a first embodiment, the vectorial summation is implemented by a mechanical sin/cos mechanism in which a crank drives two linear potentiometers out of phase. In a second embodiment, a polarized light resolver generates the sin and cos functions. In a third embodiment, a printed circuit resolver generates the sin and cos functions.

Multi-100kW: Planar low cost solar array development

Seven low cost multi-100 kW planar solar array modules were fabricated and tested. Two different designs were used, demonstrating advanced solar array construction practices. Both module types utilized second generation gridded back cells featuring high efficiency and IR transparency. A silicon dioxide AR coating optimized for transmission at gamma = 1.7 microns was applied to the back surface. Two interconnect types, a single sheet printed circuit and a roll type, with alternate approaches to increasing transparency and reducing cost were designed and fabricated. Hinge stress and electrical power optimization were also examined. Two point designs were studied. The first design used a coilage longeron mast and is autonomously deployable. The second design used a Stac Beam for high natural frequency response and required astronaut assistance and assembly on orbit. It was conclusively demonstrated that planar arrays are the most cost effective design for use on the space station or other high power applications.

The LSLE echocardiograph - Commercial hardware aboard Spacelab

The Life Sciences Laboratory Equipment Echocardiograph, a commercial 77020AC Ultrasound Imaging System modified to meet NASA's spacecraft standards, is described. The assembly consists of four models: display and control, scanner, scan converter, and physioamplifiers. Four separate processors communicate over an IEE-488 bus, and the system has more than 6000 individual components on 35 printed circuit cards. Three levels of self test are provided: a short test during power up, a basic test initiated by a front panel switch, and interactive tests for specific routines. Default mode operation further enhances reliability. Modifications of the original system include the replacement of ac power supplies with dc to dc converters, a slide-out keyboard (to prevent accidental operation), Teflon insulated wire, and additional shielding for the ultrasound transducer cable.

Investigation of welded interconnection of large area wraparound contacted silicon solar cells

An investigation was conducted to evaluate the welding and temperature cycle testing of large area 5.9 x 5.9 wraparound silicon solar cells utilizing printed circuit substrates with SSC-155 interconnect copper metals and the LMSC Infrared Controlled weld station. An initial group of 5 welded modules containing Phase 2 developmental 5.9 x 5.9 cm cells were subjected to cyclical temperatures of + or 80 C at a rate of 120 cycles per day. Anomalies were noted in the adhesion of the cell contact metallization; therefore, 5 additional modules were fabricated and tested using available Phase I cells with demonstrated contact integrity. Cycling of the later module type through 12,000 cycles indicated the viability of this type of lightweight flexible array concept. This project demonstrated acceptable use of an alternate interconnect copper in combination with large area wraparound cells and emphasized the necessity to implement weld pull as opposed to solder pull procedures at the cell vendors for cells that will be interconnected by welding.

60 GHz low noise wideband receiver

The printed circuit and GaAs beam lead technology-based, low noise integrated receiver presented was developed for low cost space communications and operates in the 59-64 GHz range, using a phase-locked Gunn oscillator at 51.5 GHz. An IF output of 7.5-12.5 GHz is obtained. With the exception of the IF amplifier, and of the E-plane technology-based RF preselect filter, all circuits of the device employ suspended stripline construction.

Sensing and perception research for space telerobotics at JPL

PIFLEX is a pipelined-image processor that can perform elaborate computations whose exact nature is not fixed in the hardware, and that can handle multiple images. A wire-wrapped prototype PIFEX module has been produced and debugged, using a version of the convolver composed of three custom VLSI chips (plus the line buffers). A printed circuit layout is being designed for use with a single-chip convolver, leading to production of a PIFEX with about 120 modules. A high-level language for programming PIFEX has been designed, and a compiler will be written for it. The camera calibration software has been completed and tested. Two more terms in the camera model, for lens distortion, probably will be added later. The acquisition and tracking system has been designed and most of it has been coded in Pascal for the MicroVAX-II. The feature tracker, motion stereo module and stereo matcher have executed successfully. The model matcher is still under development, and coding has begun on the tracking initializer. The object tracker was running on a different computer from the VAX, and preliminary runs on real images have been performed there. Once all modules are working, optimization and integration will begin. Finally, when a sufficiently large PIFEX is available, appropriate parts of acquisition and tracking, including much of the feature tracker, will be programmed into PIFEX, thus increasing the speed and robustness of the system.

Low-Dielectric Polyimides

New process developed to produce aromatic condensation polyimide films and coatings having dielectric constants in range of 2.4 to 3.2. Materials better electrical insulators than state-of-the-art commercial polyimides. Several low-dielectric-constant polyimides have excellent resistance to moisture. Useful as film and coating materials for both industrial and aerospace applications where high electrical insulation, resistance to moisture, mechanical strength, and thermal stability required. Applicable to production of high-temperature and moisture-resistance adhesives, films, photoresists, and coatings. Electronic applications include printed-circuit boards, both of composite and flexible-film types and potential use in automotive, aerospace, and electronic industries.
