Complex saddles and Euclidean wormholes in the Lorentzian path integral

We study complex saddles of the Lorentzian path integral for 4D axion gravity and its dual description in terms of a 3-form flux, which include the Giddings-Strominger Euclidean wormhole. Transition amplitudes are computed using the Lorentzian path integral and with the help of Picard-Lefschetz theory. The number and nature of saddles is shown to qualitatively change in the presence of a bilocal operator that could arise, for example, as a result of considering higher-topology transitions. We also analyze the stability of the Giddings-Strominger wormhole in the 3-form picture, where we find that it represents a perturbatively stable Euclidean saddle of the gravitational path integral. This calls into question the ultimate fate of such solutions in an ultraviolet-complete theory of quantum gravity.

Particle production as a function of charged-particle flattenicity in 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

This paper reports the first measurement of the transverse momentum (𝑝 T ) spectra of primary charged pions, kaons, (anti)protons, and unidentified particles as a function of the charged-particle flattenicity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV. Flattenicity is a novel event shape observable that is measured in the pseudorapidity intervals covered by the V0 detector, 2.8 < 𝜂 < 5.1 and −3.7 < 𝜂 < −1.7. According to QCD-inspired phenomenological models, it shows sensitivity to multiparton interactions and is less affected by biases toward larger 𝑝 T due to local multiplicity fluctuations in the V0 acceptance than multiplicity. The analysis is performed in minimum-bias (MB) as well as in high-multiplicity events up to 𝑝 T = 20 GeV/⁢𝑐. The event selection requires at least one charged particle produced in the pseudorapidity interval |𝜂| < 1. The measured 𝑝 T distributions, average 𝑝 T , kaon-to-pion and proton-to-pion particle ratios, presented in this paper, are compared to model calculations using pythia 8 based on color strings and EPOS LHC. The modification of the 𝑝 T -spectral shapes in low-flattenicity events that have large event activity with respect to those measured in MB events develops a pronounced peak at intermediate 𝑝 T (2 < 𝑝 T < 8 GeV/𝑐), and approaches the vicinity of unity at higher 𝑝 T . The results are qualitatively described by pythia, and they show different behavior than those measured as a function of charged-particle multiplicity based on the V0M estimator.

Towards an “$\mathrm{AdS}_1$/$\mathrm{CFT}_0$” correspondence from the $\mathrm{D}$(-1)/$\mathrm{D}$7 system?

We argue that a type IIB Euclidean supergravity solution of the form $\mathbb{R}$ x S 1 x $\mathbb{T}$ 8 with imaginary self-dual F 1 flux through $\mathbb{R}$ x S 1 belongs to the chain of AdS d x S d x $\mathbb{T}$ 10-2d vacua with (imaginary) self-dual Fd flux, where d ≤ 5. Such vacua come from the near-horizon of D(d - 2)/D(8 - d) branes and are supersymmetric for odd values of d. For d = 1 we speculate that the hallmark of conformal symmetry for the matrix model dual is a vanishing free energy. The matrix dual was recently constructed by [1] by adding matrix interactions coming from strings stretching between the D(-1) and D7 branes to the IKKT matrix model. We find that the corresponding supergravity solution indeed has vanishing on-shell action. Specific F 5 fluxes need to be switched on as a consequence of (a T-dual version of) the Hanany-Witten effect.

Subregion entropy for the doubly-holographic global black string

We study the growth of entanglement entropy in a doubly holographic model of gravity for a spherical AdS black hole. Compared to previous work, which was limited to the case of planar black holes, this introduces an extra scale to the problem. This allows us to analyze the interplay between the reorganization of entanglement entropy due to island formation and the onset of the Hawking-Page phase transition and to find the appearance of a new critical black hole radius unrelated to the thermodynamics. We also find that the geometry of the Ryu-Takayanagi surface capturing the physics of islands exhibits drastically different behavior than in the planar case.

Primordial monopoles and strings, inflation, and gravity waves

We consider magnetic monopoles and strings that appear in non-supersymmetric SO(10) and E 6 grand unified models paying attention to gauge coupling unification and proton decay in a variety of symmetry breaking schemes. The dimensionless string tension parameter Gμ spans the range 10 –6 – 10 –30 , where G is Newton’s constant and μ is the string tension. We show how intermediate scale monopoles with mass ~ 10 13 – 10 14 GeV and flux ≲ 2.8 × 10 –16 cm –2 s –1 sr –1 , and cosmic strings with Gμ ~ 10 –11 – 10 –10 survive inflation and are present in the universe at an observable level. We estimate the gravity wave spectrum emitted from cosmic strings taking into account inflation driven by a Coleman-Weinberg potential. The tensor-to-scalar ratio r lies between 0.06 and 0.003 depending on the details of the inflationary scenario.

Model Predictive Control-Based Trajectory Shaper for Safe and Efficient Adaptive Cruise Control

Recent studies show that commercially-available adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems are string-unstable, indicating that ACC-driven vehicles amplify speed fluctuations from downstream traffic and induce stop-and-go waves. Moreover, it is challenging to revise the original control algorithm of an ACC system to achieve string stability due to its internal complexity and powertrain uncertainties. To achieve desired control performance given a string-unstable ACC system and circumvent revising the original control algorithm, this study proposes a model predictive control-based trajectory shaper (MPC-TS), which only modifies the sensor-measured trajectory information (i.e., position and speed) of the preceding vehicle. The proposed MPC-TS leverages the input shaping technique to generate reference trajectory to improve string stability, while incorporating tracking errors and vehicle acceleration/deceleration magnitude in the MPC cost function and constraining fluctuations of vehicle speed and spacing to ensure desired car-following performance. Numerical experiments validate the control performance of ACC with the proposed MPC-TS in terms of string stability, safety, traffic efficiency, and comfort.

Tensionless strings on AdS 3 orbifolds

The bound state of one NS5 brane (wrapped on a T 4 ) and N NS1-branes has two dual descriptions: its low-energy dynamics is described by the symmetric orbifold of T 4 , while the near horizon geometry is captured by string theory on AdS 3 × S 3 × T 4 with one unit of NS flux. The latter theory is exactly solvable in the hybrid formalism, and this allows one to prove the equivalence of the two descriptions. In this paper we extend this duality to Z k orbifolds of this AdS 3 × S 3 background. In particular, we show that the corresponding worldsheet spectrum reproduces exactly the perturbative excitations on top of a certain non-perturbative state in the dual symmetric orbifold theory. Since the AdS/CFT duality map is exact for these models, we obtain an interesting picture of how the duality relates boundary and bulk descriptions.

Ultimate Bifacial Showdown: 75kW Field Results

This work presents one year results for a side-by-side comparison of 5 different bifacial technologies, deployed in a 75-kW single-axis tracked field at Golden, CO. Four PERC (multi and mono) and 1 Silicon Heterojunction manufacturers are represented. Reference strings of equivalent monofacial PV modules are also installed for a direct technology comparison and calculation of bifacial gain. Analysis indicates performance within expectation, with a cumulative model mean error within +/- 2% for both bifacial and monofacial models and cumulative bifacial energy gain between 6-9%. High accuracy string-level DC monitoring and module-level measurements are also presented, showing effects of snow and edge effects in the order of +/- 3% for non-uniform irradiance across the row. Data from a custom-module to measure shading loss from the torque-tube is installed, showing up to 6% irradiance non-uniformity for the month of January.

Thermal nature of confining strings

We investigate the quantum statistical properties of the confining string connecting a static fermion-antifermion pair in the massive Schwinger model. By analyzing the reduced density matrix of the subsystem located in between the fermion and antifermion, we demonstrate that as the interfermion separation approaches the string-breaking distance, the overlap between the microscopic density matrix and an effective thermal density matrix exhibits a pronounced, narrow peak, approaching unity at the onset of string breaking. This behavior reveals that the confining flux tube evolves toward a genuinely thermal state as the separation between the charges grows, even in the absence of an external heat bath. In other words, one cannot tell whether a reduced state of the subsystem arises from a surrounding heat bath or from entanglement with the rest of the system. The entanglement spectrum near the critical string-breaking distance exhibits a rapid transition from the dominance of a single state describing the confining electric string towards a strongly entangled state containing virtual fermion-antifermion pairs. Our findings establish a quantitative link between confinement, entanglement, and emergent thermality, and suggest that string breaking corresponds to a microscopic thermalization transition within the flux tube.

Bethe Ansatz solutions for certain Periodic Quantum Circuits

I derived Bethe Ansatz equations for two model Periodic Quantum Circuits: (1) XXZ model; (2) Chiral Hubbard Model. I obtained explicit expressions for the spectra of the strings of any length. These analytic results may be useful for calibration and error mitigations in modern engineered quantum platforms.

Impact of a midband gravitational wave experiment on detectability of cosmological stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds

In this report we make forecasts for the impact a future “midband” space-based gravitational wave experiment, most sensitive to 10 -2 - 10Hz,could have on potential detections of cosmological stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds (SGWBs). Specific proposed midband experiments considered are TianGo, B-DECIGO, and AEDGE. We propose a combined power-law integrated sensitivity (CPLS) curve combining GW experiments over different frequency bands, which shows the midband improves sensitivity to SGWBs by up to two orders of magnitude at 10 -2 - 10 Hz . We consider GW emission from cosmic strings and phase transitions as benchmark examples of cosmological SGWBs. We explicitly model various astrophysical SGWB sources, most importantly from unresolved black hole mergers. Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo, we demonstrated that midband experiments can, when combined with LIGO A+ and LISA, significantly improve sensitivities to cosmological SGWBs and better separate them from astrophysical SGWBs. In particular, we forecast that a midband experiment improves sensitivity to cosmic string tension G μ by up to a factor of 10, driven by improved component separation from astrophysical sources. For phase transitions, a midband experiment can detect signals peaking at 0.1–1 Hz, which for our fiducial model corresponds to early Universe temperatures of T * ~10 4 – 10 6 GeV , generally beyond the reach of LIGO and LISA. The midband closes an energy gap and better captures characteristic spectral shape information. It thus substantially improves measurement of the properties of phase transitions at lower energies of T * ~ O(10 3 ) GeV , potentially relevant to new physics at the electroweak scale, whereas in this energy range LISA alone will detect an excess but not effectively measure the phase transition parameters. Our modeling code and chains are publicly available.

Mismatch losses in a PV system due to shortened strings

Numerous events may require intentional removal of one or more photovoltaic modules from a string, shortening the length of the string relative to others within the array, resulting in a string length mismatch. The impact of such a mismatch is not well understood either in measurable operational effects (voltage, current, power) or in the potential effects on long-term module health. It is impractical to solely approach this problem experimentally due to the size and complexity of arrays that may experience string length shortening. Here this work presents simulations, validated through limited field experiments on a two string array, providing a basis from which more complex arrays and scenarios may be explored. Refinement of the simulation achieves an overall error in IMPP for the nominal (S 1 ) and test strings (S 2 ) between the simulation and experimental values, through all test conditions, of +0.35 ± 1.46% and -0.36 ± 1.58% respectively. Shortening one of two strings by one module results in a power loss greater than the power contribution of the module alone (1.29 module equivalents); the impact increases through the maximum test case of a six module mismatch with a power loss equivalent to more than 11 modules. The impact of using string-end blocking diodes is presented with an emphasis at the array maximum power point and at open circuit. Implications are discussed for arrays of higher complexity.

Long way to Ricci flatness

We study two-dimensional weighted N = (2) supersymmetric CP models with the goal of exploring their infrared (IR) limit. WCP(N, N ~ ) are simplified versions of world-sheet theories on non-Abelian strings in four-dimensional N = 2 QCD. In the gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) formulation, WCP(N, N ~ ) has N charges +1 and N ~ charges –1 fields. As well-known, at N ~ = N this GLSM is conformal. Its target space is believed to be a non-compact Calabi-Yau manifold. We mostly focus on the N = 2 case, then the Calabi-Yau space is a conifold.

Modeling for the phased injector upgrade for 12 GeV CEBAF

As a follow on to the 12 GeV upgrade to the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility, the front end of the DC photo-gun-based injector has gone through a phased upgrade. The first phase focused on the beamline between the gun and the RF chopper system, and the second phase addresses the beamline after the RF chopper system including replacing the capture section and quarter cryomodule with a new booster module containing a 2-cell and 7-cell cavity string. Throughout the design process, we maintained and developed three models, one for the existing injector and one for each of the upgrade phases. With these models, we evaluated proposed hardware upgrades, evaluated and determined optimized beamline element positions, developed buncher voltage requirements, and settings for optimal injector running. In this paper, we will describe the models and results from these various studies and provide a brief summary of Phase 1 commissioning.

Axion domain walls, small instantons, and non-invertible symmetry breaking

Non-invertible global symmetry often predicts degeneracy in axion potentials and carries important information about the global form of the gauge group. When these symmetries are spontaneously broken they can lead to the formation of stable axion domain wall networks which support topological degrees of freedom on their worldvolume. Such non-invertible symmetries can be broken by embedding into appropriate larger UV gauge groups where small instanton contributions lift the vacuum degeneracy, and provide a possible solution to the domain wall problem. We explain these ideas in simple illustrative examples and then apply them to the Standard Model, whose gauge algebra and matter content are consistent with several possible global structures. Each possible global structure leads to different selection rules on the axion couplings, and various UV completions of the Standard Model lead to more specific relations. As a proof of principle, we also present an example of a UV embedding of the Standard Model which can solve the axion domain wall problem. The formation and annihilation of the long-lived axion domain walls can lead to observables, such as gravitational wave signals. Observing such signals, in combination with the axion coupling measurements, can provide valuable insight into the global structure of the Standard Model, as well as its UV completion.

Helmholtz vibrations in bowed strings

We report for almost 160 years, it has been known that Helmholtz oscillations, unique to vibrating strings in bowed instruments (violin, cello, etc.), have two distinct regimes: “slip” and “stick.” During the slip regime, the force at the bow-string interaction is attributed to friction between the sliding bow hair and the vibrating string, with a friction coefficient that decreases with increasing relative velocity. Yet the hair-string interaction during the stick regime is less understood. We propose that the interaction force during the stick regime is proportional to the product of the longitudinal acoustic impedance of the bow hair to the relative bow-string velocity. We validate this hypothesis by solving the string's differential equation of motion, including an enhanced formulation to avoid parasitic high-frequency oscillations. This physical model enables us to analyze, in real time, the characteristics of the Helmholtz oscillations, including the string shape, excitation of harmonics, Schelleng ripples, and string energy, showing that the bowed string gains energy during the stick regime and loses energy during the slip regime.

Fracton phases via exotic higher-form symmetry-breaking

We study p-string condensation mechanisms for fracton phases from the viewpoint of higher-form symmetry, focusing on the examples of the X-cube model and the rank-two symmetric-tensor scalar charge theory. This work is motivated by questions of the relationship between fracton phases and continuum quantum field theories, and also provides general principles to describe p-string condensation independent of specific lattice model constructions. We give a perspective on higher-form symmetry in lattice models in terms of cellular homology. Applying this perspective to the coupled-layer construction of the X-cube model, we identify a foliated 1-form symmetry that is broken in the X-cube phase, but preserved in the phase of decoupled toric code layers. Similar considerations for the scalar charge theory lead to a framed 1-form symmetry. These symmetries are distinct from standard 1-form symmetries that arise, for instance, in relativistic quantum field theory. Here, we also give a general discussion on interpreting p-string condensation, and related constructions involving gauging of symmetry, in terms of higher-form symmetry.

Sneutrino tribrid inflation, metastable cosmic strings and gravitational waves

Here, we present a successful realization of sneutrino tribrid inflation model based on a gauged U(1)_B-L extension of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). A single interaction term involving the B-L Higgs field and the right-handed neutrinos serves multiple purposes. These include the generation of heavy Majorana masses for the right-handed neutrinos to provide an explanation for the tiny neutrino masses via the seesaw mechanism, a realistic scenario for reheating and non-thermal leptogenesis with a reheat temperature as low as 10 6 GeV, and a successful realization of inflation with right-handed sneutrino as the inflaton. The matter parity which helps avoid rapid proton decay survives as a Z 2 subgroup of a U(1) R-symmetry. Depending on the choice of model parameters yields the following predicted range of the tensor to scalar ratio, 3 x 10 -11 ≲ r≲ 7x 10 -4 (6 x 10 -7 ≲ r ≲ 0.01), and the running of the scalar spectral index, -0.00022 ≲ dn_s/dln k ≲ -0.0026 (-0.00014 ≲ dn_s/dln k ≲ 0.005), along with the B-L breaking scale, 3 x 10 14 ≲ M/ GeV≲ 5 x 10 15 (6 x 10 15 ≲ M/ GeV≲ 2 x 10 16 ), calculated at the central value of the scalar spectral index, n_s =0.966, reported by Planck 2018. The possibility of realizing metastable cosmic strings in a grand unified theory setup is briefly discussed. The metastable cosmic string network admits string tension values in the range 10 -8 ≲ Gμ s ≲ 10 -6 , and predicts a stochastic gravitational wave background lying within the 2-σ bounds of the recent NANOGrav 12.5-yr data.
