Manufacturing porous U-10Zr metallic fuels with controllable microstructure by volume control spark plasma sintering

In this paper, the volume control spark plasma sintering tool has been designed and applied to sinter porous U-10Zr metallic fuels, by which the sintered sample volume can be precisely controlled. Ethanol and NH 4 HCO 3 are used to control the powder compact or as pore formers to control the pore size and pore structure. Without pore formers, the fuel pellet displays an inhomogeneous microstructure consisting of highly porous and highly densified areas. Uneven powder stacking in the green body results in a non-uniform microstructure, and in the closed-packed area, Joule heating accelerates the neck formation and densification. The addition of ethanol reduces the friction between the powders, resulting in isolated pores formed by the stacking of powders during the sintering. By adding NH 4 HCO 3 , the pore size, and structure can be well controlled, and an interconnected pore structure can be obtained upon the decomposition of the NH 4 HCO 3 . Further, a uniform microstructure and pore distributions can be achieved through the U-10Zr fuel pellets by controlling current flow during the volume control SPS sintering. The microstructure and phase characterization of the sintered porous U-10Zr pellets show major phases of α-U and α-Zr for the sample with short dwelling. For the sample with long dwelling (30 min), the ω UZr 2 in the Zr-enriched area has been observed. The strategy of volume control SPS sintering with the assistance of pore formers could be used to fabricate porous U-10Zr metallic fuels to mimic the microstructure evolution of irradiated metallic fuels (including porosity) and could enable a possible solution for the design of new sodium-free metallic fuels for high burnup.

A novel microstructural approach for TRIP/TWIP β-Ti alloys using intermetallic precipitation

Interest in metastable β-Ti has grown, due to the exceptional work hardening caused by TRansformation and TWinning Induced Plasticity (TRIP/TWIP). A current challenge is increasing the yield strength, while maintaining the benefits of TRIP/TWIP. This study presents the first report of TRIP/TWIP in a metastable β-Ti alloy containing intermetallic compounds, specifically Ti silicide precipitates. Silicon (Si) additions enable the formation of silicide particles, which can be precipitated, dissolved, and controlled through tailored heat treatments. In-situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction during tensile testing reveals primary {332}<113> twinning activates first, followed by TRIP, leading to extensive work hardening and uniform elongation in the solutionized state. In conclusion, these findings open a novel microstructural approach to the design of multiphase TRIP/TWIP titanium alloys, relying on intermetallic precipitation rather than allotropes such as α or ω phase, and lay the groundwork for future studies on intermetallic precipitation strengthening.

Microstructural evolution, defect mitigation, and precipitation behavior in AA6061 via laser powder bed fusion with high-temperature substrate heating

Defects, particularly solidification cracking, remain persistent challenges in the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) processing of AA6061 aluminum alloy. This study systematically investigates defect mitigation, microstructural evolution, and mechanical properties associated with high-temperature substrate preheating at 500 °C. Comprehensive microstructural analyses, including characterization of defects, grain structures, and precipitation behavior, were performed on samples in both as-built and T6 heat-treated states. Elevated preheating substantially reduced solidification cracking across a wide processing window, while demonstrating decreased crack sensitivity to laser parameters. Columnar cracks along the build direction were observed despite substrate preheating. Lack-of-fusion and keyhole porosity were effectively eliminated, though gas-induced microporosity persisted at higher powers. In-depth characterization of two distinct laser power and speed conditions confirmed the formation of micron-sized, non-coherent Mg 2 Si precipitates under heated substrate conditions, alongside α-AlFeCrMnSi intermetallic phases indicative of in-situ thermal effects during fabrication. Subsequent T6 heat treatment revealed the formation of fine, coherent needle-shaped β″ strengthening precipitates. Despite substantial differences in processing parameters, comparable mechanical properties were measured in the as-built samples (∼52 MPa yield strength, ∼130 MPa tensile strength), primarily due to reduced strain hardening effects and consistent precipitation characteristics. Meanwhile, the T6 heat treatment led to significant improvement in properties, enhancing yield strength by over 400%, aligning closely with the performance of conventional wrought AA6061-T6. These findings underscore that high-temperature substrate preheating offers an effective means to suppress cracks, control precipitation, and enhance mechanical performance in LPBF-processed AA6061.

Effect of Impurities on the Redox Properties of Goethite

Iron oxide minerals regulate the flux of electrons in the environment and are important hosts for trace and minor, yet critical, elements. Here, we present the first evidence of a direct link between the local coordination environments of Ni and Zn and the redox properties of their host phase goethite (α-FeOOH), the most abundant Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxide at Earth’s surface. Here, we used aqueous redox measurements to show that the redox potential E H 0 , and hence the mineral’s stability, follows the order: pure goethite ≥ Zn-goethite > Ni-goethite. Parallel X-ray absorption and scattering measurements demonstrate, using quantum-informed analysis, that the local coordination environment of the smaller impurity, Ni, causes more bulk strain energy than Zn, which nearly accounts for the difference in E H 0 between Ni- and Zn-goethite. Our theory-informed, experimental study reveals how two common impurities affect the stability of goethite with implications for the biogeochemical reactivity of Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxide in mediating elemental and electron fluxes in the environment.

Microstructural evolution and precipitation in γ-LiAlO 2 during ion irradiation

Polycrystalline γ-LiAlO 2 pellets were sequentially irradiated with 120 keV He + and 80 keV D 2 + ions to the fluences of 1 × 10 17 and 2 × 10 17 (He + + D + )/cm 2 at 573 K. Additional irradiation was performed to a fluence of 2 × 10 17 (He + + D + )/cm 2 at 773 K. The irradiated pellets were characterized using scanning transmission electron microscopy, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, and grazing incidence x-ray diffraction. Lattice damage, amorphization, and fractures are observed with no evidence for the formation of secondary-phase precipitates in the pellets irradiated up to an ion fluence of 2 × 10 17 (He + + D + )/cm 2 at 573 K. In contrast, faceted precipitates with sizes larger than 100 nm formed in a pellet irradiated to 2 × 10 17 (He + + D + )/cm 2 at 773 K. Analyses of the diffraction and composition data suggest that the precipitates have a spinel-type structure, likely a non-stoichiometric LiAl 5 O 8 with Li depletion. This could be an intermediate phase with Li atoms at the octahedral and possibly tetrahedral sites as well. It is speculated that as the dose increases, Li loss will continue and the precipitates will approach a composition of alumina primarily in phases of α-Al 2 O 3 and amorphized Al 2 O 3 .

Validation of 266 nm UV Raman thermometry using the alpha-to-beta quartz transition

Ultraviolet Raman scattering is a promising diagnostic for temperature measurements relevant to dynamic compression experiments, where improved signal strength and reduced background are critical. In this work, we experimentally validate Raman thermometry at 266 nm using crystalline quartz heated through the α to β phase transition in a tube furnace. Quartz provides a useful benchmark because of its well-characterized transition temperature near 846 K at ambient pressure. Temperatures inferred from the Stokes to anti-Stokes intensity ratio are compared with thermocouple measurements and with the observed phase transition. Single-shot Raman temperatures track the thermocouple closely, with an empirical single-shot scatter of approximately ±15 K under the present conditions. Temporal averaging reduces shot-to-shot scatter and improves agreement between the Raman temperatures and thermocouple readings to within approximately 8 K, while the transition is identified within 5 K of the accepted value. Measurements are performed using the fourth harmonic of a nanosecond pulsed Nd:YAG laser at 266 nm. The shorter excitation wavelength provides enhanced Raman scattering efficiency and reduced visible background relative to conventional visible excitation. Comparison with 532 nm Raman measurements acquired in the same experimental geometry demonstrates substantially improved signal-to-noise ratio for the UV configuration. These results establish 266 nm Raman thermometry as a reliable and accurate temperature diagnostic under controlled heating conditions and provide a quantitative benchmark for future application in dynamic compression and shock physics experiments.

First-principles calculation of Hubbard U for Terbium metal under high pressure

Abstract Using density functional theory (DFT) and linear response approaches, we compute the on-site Hubbard interaction U of elemental Terbium (Tb) metal in the pressure range ∼ 0–65 GPa. The resulting first-principles U values with experimental crystal structures enable us to examine the magnetic properties of Tb using a DFT+U method. The lowest-energy magnetic states in our calculations for different high-pressure Tb phases—including hcp, α -Sm, and dhcp—are found to be compatible with the corresponding magnetic ordering vectors reported in experiments. The result shows that the inclusion of Hubbard U substantially improves the accuracy and efficiency in modeling correlated rare-earth materials. Our study also provides the necessary U information for other quantum many-body techniques to study Tb under extreme pressure conditions.

Two Polymorphs of BaZn 2 P 2 : Crystal Structures, Phase Transition, and Transport Properties

Here, the novel α-BaZn 2 P 2 structural polymorph has been synthesized and structurally characterized for the first time. Its structure, elu-cidated from single crystal X-ray diffraction, indicates that the compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic α-BaCu 2 S 2 structure type, with unit cell parameters a = 9.7567(14) Å, b = 4.1266(6) Å, and c = 10.6000(15) Å. With β-BaZn 2 P 2 being previously iden-tified as belonging to the ThCr 2 Si 2 family, and with the precedent of structural phase transitions between the α-BaCu 2 S 2 type and the ThCr 2 Si 2 type, the potential for the pattern to be extended to the two different structural forms of BaZn 2 P 2 was explored. Thermal analysis suggest that a first order phase transition occurs at ~1123 K, whereby the low-temperature orthorhombic α-phase transforms to a high-temperature tetragonal β-BaZn 2 P 2 ; the structure of which was also studied and confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Preliminary transport properties and band structure calculations indicate that α-BaZn 2 P 2 is a p-type, narrow-gap semiconductor with a direct bandgap (Eg) of 0.5 eV. The Seebeck coefficient, S(T), for the material increases steadily from the room temperature value of 119 µV/K to 184 µV/K at 600 K. The electrical resistivity of α-BaZn 2 P 2 is relatively high, on the order of 40 mΩ·cm, and the ρ(T) dependence shows gradual decrease upon heating. Such behavior is comparable to those of the typical semimetals or degenerate semiconductors. Although the observed values of the as-synthesized samples are not optimal, the carrier concentration can apparently be tuned to fall between the values of metals and semiconductors, thus providing an open window for optimizing this phase towards achieving an enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit zT. The calculated indirect band gap for the β-BaZn 2 P 2 phase is Eg = 0.03 eV which is about an order of magnitude lower than that of α-BaZn 2 P 2 . It is expected that the cage-like structural motif and layered structure possessed by α-BaZn 2 P 2 and β-BaZn 2 P 2 phases, respectively, would promote the realiza-tion of a low thermal conductivity in both compounds.

Bandgap engineering of SrZrS 3 chalcogenide perovskite via substitutional doping for photovoltaic applications: a first-principles DFT study

Strontium zirconium sulfide (SrZrS 3 ) has garnered significant attention for photovoltaic (PV) applications due to its excellent optoelectronic properties, high chemical and moisture stability, and non-toxicity. However, the bandgaps of both the α- and β-phases lie outside the optimum ranges for both single-junction solar cells (SJSCs) and tandem solar cells (TSCs), thereby limiting their applications in PV technologies. In this study, we employed hybrid density functional theory to engineer the band gaps of α- and β-SrZrS 3 through substitutional doping. We considered three dopants (Hf, Sn, and Ti) at the Zr site of SrZrS 3 with varying doping concentrations and investigated their effects on the structural, electronic, and optical properties of the materials. We found that Sn and Ti doping effectively lowers the band gaps of both α- and β-SrZrS 3 , whereas Hf doping increases them. For x values up to 0.25, the band gaps of the α-SrZr 1−x Sn x S 3 and α-SrZr 1−x Ti x S 3 are within the optimum range for SJSCs, and those of β-SrZr 1−x Sn x S 3 and β-SrZr 1−x Ti x S 3 lie within the optimum range for Si/perovskite as well as perovskite/perovskite TSCs. The three dopants exhibited significant effects on the optical properties of both α- and β-SrZrS 3 , including the absorption coefficient, energy-loss functions, reflectivity, and refractivity spectra. Thermodynamic stability analysis revealed that for both phases, SrZr 1−x Hf x S 3 can be synthesized via exothermic processes, whereas the formation of SrZr 1−x Ti x S 3 and SrZr1−xSn x S 3 is endothermic and hence, not thermodynamically favorable. Further analysis showed that SrZr 1−x Ti x S 3 in both α- and β-phases are stable under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions, whereas SrZr 1−x Sn x S 3 is prone to dissociation into ternary phases (SrZrS 3 and SrSnS 3 ), especially at higher doping concentrations. These results show that Ti doping is effective in tuning the band gaps of α- and β-SrZrS 3 toward the optimal values for PV applications.

Phase transformation in boron under shock compression

Using first-principles molecular dynamics, we calculated the equation of state and shock Hugoniot of various boron phases. Here, we find a large mismatch between Hugoniots based on existing knowledge of the equilibrium phase diagram and those measured by shock experiments, which could be reconciled if the α-B 12 /β phases are significantly over-pressurized in boron under shock compression. Our results also indicate that there exist an anomaly and negative Clapeyron slope along the melting curve of boron at 100 GPa and 1500–3000 K. These results enable an in-depth understanding of matter under shock compression, in particular the significance of compression-rate dependence of phase transitions and kinetic effects in experimental measurements.

Polymorphism and Phase Control in Dion–Jacobson 2D 3-(Aminomethyl)piperidinium-Based Metal Iodide Perovskites

Two-dimensional halide perovskites exhibit rich structural diversity and tunable optoelectronic properties, making them promising materials for energy, sensing, and photonic applications. In this work, we report the structural mapping of four distinct polymorphs, γ (P2 1 /c), β (P4/mbm), α (P4/mmm), and δ (Cmcm) in the two-dimensional iodoplumbate, iodostannate, and iodogermanate perovskite so-called Dion-Jacobson series (3AMP)MI4 (M = Sn, Pb, Ge), where 3AMP is 3-(aminomethyl)piperidinium. The phases exhibit systematic evolution in octahedral distortion, lattice symmetry, and metal–halide geometry, enabling structural control over optoelectronic properties. Notably, the α-phase of (3AMP)SnI 4 represents a rare, ambient-stable, high-symmetry structure for Sn-based perovskites, without a phase transition down to 100 K. Variable-temperature single-crystal diffraction, powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD), and calorimetry reveal metal- and temperature-dependent polymorph interconversions, including the emergence of long range supercell reflections in Pb-rich compositions at low temperature. Optical spectroscopy and photoelectron yield spectroscopy confirm band gap tunability and band alignment trends, highlighting symmetry-dependent shifts and anomalous band gap bowing in mixed-metal systems, verified by electronic structure calculations. Calculations additionally indicate that the higher symmetry phases have reduced electron and hole effective masses compared to the lower symmetry phases.

High Pressure–Temperature Study of MgF 2 , CaF 2 , and BaF 2 by Raman Spectroscopy: Phase Transitions and Vibrational Properties of AF 2 Difluorides

The phase transition of AF 2 difluorides strongly depends on pressure, temperature, and cationic radius. Here, we have investigated the phase transition of three difluorides, including MgF 2 , CaF 2 , and BaF 2 , at simultaneously high pressures and temperatures using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction in externally heated diamond anvil cells up to 55 GPa at 300–700 K. Rutile-type difluoride MgF 2 with a small cationic radius undergoes a transition to the CaCl 2 -type phase at 9.9(1) GPa and 300 K, to the HP-PdF 2 -type phase at 21.0(2) GPa, and to the cotunnite-type phase at 44.2(2) GPa. The phase transition pressure to the HP-PdF 2 and cotunnite structure at 300 K for our single crystal was found to be higher than that in previous studies using polycrystalline samples. Elevating the temperature increases the transition pressure from rutile- to the CaCl 2 -type phase but has a negative influence on the transition pressure when MgF 2 transforms from the HP-PdF 2 - to cotunnite-type phase. Meanwhile, the transition pressure from the CaCl 2 - to HP-PdF 2 -type phase for MgF 2 was identified to be independent of the temperature. Raman peaks suspected to belong to the α-PbO 2 -type phase were observed at 14.6–21.0(1) GPa and 400–700 K. At 300 K, difluorides CaF 2 and BaF 2 in the fluorite structure with larger cationic radii transform to the cotunnite-type phase at 9.6(3) and 3.0(3) GPa at 300 K, respectively, and BaF 2 further undergoes a transition to the Ni 2 In-type phase at 15.5(4) GPa. For both CaF 2 and BaF 2 , elevating the temperature leads to a lower transition pressure from fluorite- to the cotunnite-type phase but has little influence on the transition to the Ni 2 In structure. Raman data provide valuable insights for mode Grüneisen parameters. We note that the mode Grüneisen parameters for both difluorides and dioxides vary linearly with the cation radius. Further calculations for the mode Grüneisen parameters at high pressures for MgF 2 , CaF 2 , and BaF 2 yield a deeper understanding of the thermodynamic properties of the difluorides.

Comparison of stellar populations in simulated and real post-starburst galaxies in MaNGA

ABSTRACT Recent integral field spectroscopic (IFS) surveys have revealed radial gradients in the optical spectral indices of post-starburst (PSB) galaxies, which can be used to constrain their formation histories. We study the spectral indices of post-processed mock IFS datacubes of binary merger simulations, carefully matched to the properties of the MaNGA IFS survey, with a variety of black hole (BH) feedback models, progenitor galaxies, orbits, and mass ratios. Based on our simulation sample, we find that only major mergers on prograde–prograde or retrograde–prograde orbits in combination with a mechanical BH feedback model can form galaxies with weak enough ongoing star formation, and therefore absent H α emission, to be selected by traditional PSB selection methods. We find strong fluctuations in nebular emission line strengths, even within the PSB phase, suggesting that H α selected PSBs are only a subsample of the underlying population. The global PSB population can be more robustly identified using stellar continuum-based approaches. The difficulty in reproducing the very young PSBs in simulations potentially indicates that new sub-resolution star formation recipes are required to properly model the process of star formation quenching. In our simulations, we find that the starburst peaks at the same time at all radii, but is stronger and more prolonged in the inner regions. This results in a strong time evolution in the radial gradients of the spectral indices that can be used to estimate the age of the starburst without reliance on detailed star formation histories from spectral synthesis models.

Phase-field modeling and experiments of dynamic fracture in single crystal quartz

Predicting the onset and characteristics of brittle fracture is important for a wide range of engineering and geological material applications. In this paper, we study important aspects of brittle fracture in α-quartz by phase-field modeling and experiments using a top-down approach. In the modeling framework, the work term in the Griffith energy balance is replaced with internal energy contributions that represent surface energy, thermal energy, and elastic strain energy stored in defects. This allows parametrization of individual energy contributions in terms of internal state variables and keeps track of energy partitioning after the onset of fracture. The path and history dependence of fracture is included in evolution laws for internal state variables, e.g., entropy evolution, while the energy remains a true potential. In the experimental part, dynamic compression experiments coupled with X-ray phase contrast imaging are performed on cube-like samples with a hole. In the top-down analysis, dynamic compression and three point bending experiments from the literature are simulated with the developed phase-field damage model. In conclusion, the fitted model highlights the strain rate, size, and stress state dependence of damage nucleation and evolution in single crystal α-quartz.

PVDF-based backsheet cracking: Mapping in situ phase evolution by X-ray scattering

One of the most common polymers used in commercial photovoltaic backsheets is polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). However, recent reports have shown the potential for PVDF-based backsheets to crack and fail prematurely. Previous work has suggested that polymer phase changes play a role in the failure mechanism. Here, in situ wide-angle X-ray scattering maps are used to show that α- to β-phase transformations occur at crack tips in aged PVDF-based backsheets under stretching. Substantial β-phase formation is shown to be associated with strain hardening. In addition, our work demonstrates that β-phase formation is not required for crack growth and only occurs at crack tips when plastic deformation of the PVDF polymer has occurred. In conclusion, the anisotropy in the strength of aged PVDF-based backsheets is linked to the lack of β-phase formation when strain is applied to aged backsheets in the transverse direction.

High pressure structural and lattice dynamics study of α-In2Se3

Layered α-In2Se3 has been studied using a combined in situ synchrotron angle-dispersive powder x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy study in a diamond anvil cell up to 60+ GPa, at room temperature. Helium, which remains fairly hydrostatic up to the highest pressure in this study, was used as the pressure-transmitting medium. The results from both experimental methods reveal a pressure-induced structural phase transition from α-In2Se3 to a monoclinic β'-In2Se3 structure at ≈1 GPa, in agreement with previous studies. Based on our detailed measurements using both experimental techniques and the F-f formalism, the β'-In2Se3 structure remains stable up to 45 GPa, without a clear indication of a phase transition toward the previously reported β-In2Se3 phase. Above this pressure, In2Se3 adopts a disordered solid-solution-like orthorhombic structure, phase IV. The results are discussed in comparison with the relevant previous studies of α-In2Se3 under pressure.
