Steady, oscillatory, and unsteady subsonic Aerodynamics, production version 1.1 (SOUSSA-P1.1). Volume 2: User/programmer manual

A user/programmer manual for the computer program SOUSSA P 1.1 is presented. The program was designed to provide accurate and efficient evaluation of steady and unsteady loads on aircraft having arbitrary shapes and motions, including structural deformations. These design goals were in part achieved through the incorporation of the data handling capabilities of the SPAR finite element Structural Analysis computer program. As a further result, SOUSSA P possesses an extensive checkpoint/ restart facility. The programmer's portion of this manual includes overlay/subroutine hierarchy, logical flow of control, definition of SOUSSA P 1.1 FORTRAN variables, and definition of SOUSSA P 1.1 subroutines. Purpose of the SOUSSA P 1.1 modules, input data to the program, output of the program, hardware/software requirements, error detection and reporting capabilities, job control statements, a summary of the procedure for running the program and two test cases including input and output and listings are described in the user oriented portion of the manual.

Numerical solution techniques for unsteady transonic aerodynamics problems

Basic concepts of finite difference solution techniques for unsteady transonic flows are presented. The hierarchy of mathematical forumulations that approximate the Navier-Stokes equations are reviewed. The basic concepts involved in constructing numerical algorthms to solve these formulations are given. Semi-implicit and implicit schemes are constructed and analyzed. The discussion focuses primarily on techniques for solving the low frequency transonic small disturbance equation. This is the simplest formulation that contains the essence of inviscid unsteady transonic flow physics. The low frequency formulation is emphasized here because codes based on this theory can be run in minutes of processor time on currently available computers. Furthermore, numerical techniques involved in solving this simple formulation also apply to the more complicated formulations. Extensions to these formulations are briefly described. An indication of the present capability for solving unsteady transonic flows is provided. Important areas of future research for the advancement of computational unsteady transonic aerodynamics are described.

Climatological relationships of severe duststorms in the Great Plains to synoptic weather patterns: A potential for predictability

A data base provided by 35 severe duststorms that occurred between 1968 and 1977 in the central and southern Great Plains allowed construction of a classification scheme of meteorological causes of duststorms, and a telescopic forecast technique for medium range (6 to 48 hour) prediction of severe cyclogenic duststorms. In addition, areal coverage definitions for duststorms based on characteristics of the storms, and a hierarchy of weather causes of severe duststorms were developed. The man machine mix forecast correctly predicted six of seven duststorms observed during the 1976-77 winter, with one overforecast; the machine-only forecast correctly predicted four of the seven duststorms, with one overforecast. Both techniques had problems correctly predicting the duration of severe duststorms.

Higher dimensional Hadamard matrices

The paper defines higher dimensional Hadamard matrices and enumerates on some of the simplest three-, four-, and five-dimensional cases and procedures for generating them. Special emphasis is given to proper matrices that have a dimensional hierarchy of orthogonalities. It is determined that this property lends itself primarily to the application of higher dimensional Hadamard matrices to error-correcting codes. A list of derived statements for n-dimensional Hadamard matrices are given, as well as a definition of Hadamard matrix families, such as minimal, Petrie polygon, antipodal (n-2)-dimensional sections, and double proximity shells.

Multilevel modeling of the space construction base

A mathematical model representing a flexible space vehicle in terms of interconnected discrete masses is recast into hierarchical form to facilitate the application of multilevel control techniques. The model's state equations are temporarily decoupled by utilization of a set of coordination equations. A hierarchical form of the model is constructed with the set of coordination equations at the top of the hierarchy and the set of decoupled scalar state equations in the bottom level.

Application of hybrid coordinate modeling and multilevel control techniques to a single axis torsional model

Hybrid coordinate modeling and multilevel control techniques are applied to a prototype flexible vehicle. The original hybrid coordinate model developed for this vehicle is expressed in terms of one rigid body coordinate and two modal vibration coordinates. Multilevel control techniques of decomposition, coordination and construction of the subproblem hierarchy are applied to this model.

Fluctuations in the microwave background at large angular scale

The measurements of fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background are shown to be consistent with the first order anisotropy at the level of about one part in a thousand and the limits of about one part in three thousand for fluctuations on any other scale. It is suggested that the first order anisotropy is due to the motion of the solar system relative to the radiation. This interpretation is evidence supporting the Cosmological Principle. The observed isotropy of the cosmic microwave background contradicts the concept of an indefinite hierarchy of clustering in the universe.

Report of convective phenomena team

A group meeting was assembled to focus on the planning of specific experiments, to establish some priorities, identify interested scientists who would like to participate, establish any special requirements, make recommendations on data processing, and to prepare flight plan outlines. Since the number of convective storms in the CCOPE (Cooperative Convective Precipitation Experiment) field experiment area are limited to only a few days during the operational time period the flight plans must be designed with a hierarchy of abort experiments so that the easily identified and lowest probability events should take priority until their quota is filled.

Theory of strong turbulence by renormalization

The hydrodynamical equations of turbulent motions are inhomogeneous and nonlinear in their inertia and force terms and will generate a hierarchy. A kinetic method was developed to transform the hydrodynamic equations into a master equation governing the velocity distribution, as a function of the time, the position and the velocity as an independent variable. The master equation presents the advantage of being homogeneous and having fewer nonlinear terms and is therefore simpler for the investigation of closure. After the closure by means of a cascade scaling procedure, the kinetic equation is derived and possesses a memory which represents the nonMarkovian character of turbulence. The kinetic equation is transformed back to the hydrodynamical form to yield an energy balance in the cascade form. Normal and anomalous transports are analyzed. The theory is described for incompressible, compressible and plasma turbulence. Applications of the method to problems relating to sound generation and the propagation of light in a nonfrozen turbulence are considered.

The effect of surface boundary conditions on the climate generated by a coarse-mesh general circulation model

A hierarchy of experiments was run, starting with an all water planet with zonally symmetric sea surface temperatures, then adding, one at a time, flat continents, mountains, surface physics, and realistic sea surface temperatures. The model was run with the sun fixed at a perpetual January. Ensemble means and standard deviations were computed and the t-test was used to determine the statistical significance of the results. The addition of realistic surface physics does not affect the model climatology to as large as extent as does the addition of mountains. Departures from zonal symmetry of the SST field result in a better simulation of the real atmosphere.

On the radial structure of Saturn's rings

Voyager 1 cameras revealed that Saturn's B ring appears to be subdivided into hundreds of chaotically spaced narrow rings in a hierarchy that extends to the limit of resolution. A disk model is proposed and applied to Saturn's rings: it is shown that the radial diffusion in a particulate Keplerian disk, under the influence of a viscosity law that decreases more steeply with a certain surface density than with another, will promote the breakdown of the system into an ensemble of thin rings.

On the generation and maintenance of turbulence in the interstellar medium

The broad spectrum of turbulent motions observed in the interstellar medium may be produced by the shearing action of differential galactic rotation. A steady state eddy distribution is maintained as energy cascades down the eddy hierarchy to smaller-scale motions. The characteristic decay time for interstellar turbulence is found to be 50-billion yr. Objections frequently raised against the presence of long-lived turbulent motions in the interstellar medium are therefore invalid, since these arguments usually presuppose that there is no source of fresh turbulent energy.

Integrated command, control, communications and computation system functional architecture

The functional architecture for an integrated command, control, communications, and computation system applicable to the command and control portion of the NASA End-to-End Data. System is described including the downlink data processing and analysis functions required to support the uplink processes. The functional architecture is composed of four elements: (1) the functional hierarchy which provides the decomposition and allocation of the command and control functions to the system elements; (2) the key system features which summarize the major system capabilities; (3) the operational activity threads which illustrate the interrelationahip between the system elements; and (4) the interfaces which illustrate those elements that originate or generate data and those elements that use the data. The interfaces also provide a description of the data and the data utilization and access techniques.

Structure and origin of cometary nuclei

There is strong evidence that a comet nucleus consists of a single object whose basic structure is Whipple's icy conglomerate. A number of cometary phenomena indicate that the nucleus is a low density, fragile object with a large degree of radial uniformity in structure and composition. Details of the ice-dust pattern are more uncertain. A working model is proposed which is based on theories of accumulation of larger objects from grains. This nucleus is a distorted spherical aggregate of a hierarchy of ice-dust cometesimals. These cometesimals retain some separate identity which lead to comet fragmentation when larger components break off. The outer layers of new comets were modified by cosmic ray irradiation in the Oort Cloud. The evidence for meteorite-comet association is steill controversial. Current dynamical studies do not seem to require a cometary source of meteorites.

Hierarchical specification of the SIFT fault tolerant flight control system

The specification and mechanical verification of the Software Implemented Fault Tolerance (SIFT) flight control system is described. The methodology employed in the verification effort is discussed, and a description of the hierarchical models of the SIFT system is given. To meet the objective of NASA for the reliability of safety critical flight control systems, the SIFT computer must achieve a reliability well beyond the levels at which reliability can be actually measured. The methodology employed to demonstrate rigorously that the SIFT computer meets as reliability requirements is described. The hierarchy of design specifications from very abstract descriptions of system function down to the actual implementation is explained. The most abstract design specifications can be used to verify that the system functions correctly and with the desired reliability since almost all details of the realization were abstracted out. A succession of lower level models refine these specifications to the level of the actual implementation, and can be used to demonstrate that the implementation has the properties claimed of the abstract design specifications.

Modular attitude control of a large space platform

The modular attitude control of a large space platform is studied using a three axis five body model of a flexible spacecraft. Three degree of freedom hinges are considered. A three axis four body model of a truss and a three axis ten body model of a space platform are presented. A state variable rotational dynamics model and a multilevel state variable model are shown. A decomposed performance index and decomposed Hamiltonian are also presented. A subproblem hierarchy for hybrid multilevel LQR attitude control of a three axis model is described.
