Complementary p-n-p transistor, used as the load resistor in an integrated circuit, reduces the switching time and the steady state dc current, and allows for a lower supply voltage. Current limiting is achieved by a novel unity-gain transistor.
New logic circuits have response times no longer than 10 nanoseconds and drain only milliwatts of power. The family includes AND and NAND gates and forms the basis of all logic functions. The basic circuits are used in various types of digital-data-processing systems.

MOS/silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) technology is shown to permit the realization of large-scale integrated arrays that combine the best features of monolithic bipolar and MOS technologies. The perfect isolation and reduced capacitance of SOS technology make possible static MOS circuits with nearly an order-of-magnitude improvement in speed and dynamic power dissipation over their monolithic counterparts. CMOS/SOS memory arrays have been fabricated with speeds comparable to TTL bipolar memory arrays even when operated at TTL compatible levels. Quiescent power dissipation of two described arrays is typically less than 1 microwatt/bit. The SOS/MOS technology is compatible with both aluminum and self-aligned silicon-gate processing.

Unit may be used in systems requiring milliwatt power for bias voltage functions and can be used as control mechanism for large electric power systems. Logic and energy storage techniques yield processing efficiencies of 1000 to 1 over conventional designs.
Device allows wind speeds to be measured with less power by alternating hot-wire or hot-film heating periods with measurement periods. System includes reference auxiliary circuits to generate V sub ref and ramp voltage (E sub 3) and reference half of bridge circuit. Circuit permits use of several sensing films with common temperature compensation sensor.
The applicability of CAMAC and NIM to various payloads was studied. A major result is summarized in tabular form showing the applicability of standard available CAMAC and NIM modules to the six experimental payloads chosen. It was concluded that CAMAC has wide applicability within the experiments considered.
Magnetic transducers tunes laser by making small precise adjustments in length of laser resonant cavity. Device is simple and stable structure consisting of electromagnet pulling on spring supported magnetic plate.
Several combustor concepts were designed and tested to demonstrate significant reductions in aircraft engine idle pollutant emissions. Each concept used a different approach for pollutant reductions: the hot wall combustor employs a thermal barrier coating and impingement cooled liners; the recuperative cooling combustor preheats the air before entering the combustion chamber; and the catalytic converter combustor is composed of a conventional primary zone followed by a catalytic bed for pollutant cleanup. The designs are discussed in detail and test results are presented for a range of aircraft engine idle conditions. The results indicate that ultralow levels of unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide emissions can be achieved.
A 7.5 kW (10 hp) Stirling engine was converted to a research configuration in order to obtain data for validating Stirling-cycle computer simulations. Test results for a range of heater-tube gas temperatures, mean compression-space pressures, and engine speeds with both helium and hydrogen as the working fluid are summarized. An instrumentation system to determine indicated work is described and preliminary results are presented.
A variety of charged coupled devices (CCDs) for performing programmable correlation for preprocessing environmental sensor data preparatory to its transmission to the ground were developed. A total of two separate ICs were developed and a third was evaluated. The first IC was a CCD chirp z transform IC capable of performing a 32 point DFT at frequencies to 1 MHz. All on chip circuitry operated as designed with the exception of the limited dynamic range caused by a fixed pattern noise due to interactions between the digital and analog circuits. The second IC developed was a 64 stage CCD analog/analog correlator for performing time domain correlation. Multiplier errors were found to be less than 1 percent at designed signal levels and less than 0.3 percent at the measured smaller levels. A prototype IC for performing time domain correlation was also evaluated.
A 36 bit time code generator implemented in CMOS is described. A microprocessor is used to minimize chip count. A modified 20 second format is available as an option, by changing two program steps.
