Measurements of the pp → W ± γγ and pp → Zγγ cross sections at $ \sqrt{\mathrm{s}} $ = 13 TeV and limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings

The cross section for W or Z boson production in association with two photons is measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb -1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The W → ℓν and Z → ℓℓ decay modes (where ℓ = e, μ) are used to extract the Wγγ and Zγγ cross sections in a phase space defined by electron (muon) with transverse momentum larger than 30 GeV and photon transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV. All leptons and photons are required to have absolute pseudorapidity smaller than 2.5. The measured cross sections in this phase space are σ(Wγγ) = ${13.6}_{-1.9}^{+1.9}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-4.0}^{+4.0}$ (syst) ± 0.08 (PDF + scale) fb and σ(Zγγ) = ${5.41}_{-0.55}^{+0.58}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-.070}^{+0.64}$(syst) ± 0.06 (PDF + scale) fb. Limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings are set in the framework of an effective field theory with dimension-8 operators.

Impact of Next-to-Leading-Order Weak Standard-Model-Effective-Field-Theory Corrections in e + e − → Z H

We present results from a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation of e + e − → Z H in the standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) framework, including all contributions from dimension-six operators. At NLO, there are novel dependencies on CP violating parameters in the gauge sector, on modifications to the Higgs boson self-couplings, on alterations to the top quark Yukawa couplings, and on four-fermion operators involving the electron and the top quark, among others. We show that including only the logarithms resulting from renormalization group scaling can produce misleading results, and further, we explicitly demonstrate the constraining power of combining measurements from different energy scales. Self-dual ν = 1 bosonic quantum Hall state in mixed-dimensional QED

Here, we consider a (2 + 1)-dimensional Wilson-Fisher boson coupled to a (3 + 1)-dimensional U(1) gauge field. This theory possesses a strong-weak duality in terms of the coupling constant e and is self-dual at a particular value of $\mathcal{e}$. We derive exact relations between transport coefficients for a $\mathcal{ν}$ = 1 quantum Hall state at the self-dual point. Using boson-fermion duality, we map the $\mathcal{ν}$ = 1 bosonic quantum Hall state to a Fermi sea of the dual fermion and observe that the exact relationships between transport coefficients at the bosonic self-dual point are reproduced by a simple random-phase approximation (RPA), coupled with a Drude formula, in the fermionic theory. We explain this success of the RPA by pointing out a cancellation of a parity-breaking term in the fermion theory which occurs only at the self-dual point, resulting in the fermion self-dual theory explored previously. In addition, we argue that the equivalence of the self-dual structure can be understood in terms of electromagnetic duality or modular invariance, and these features are not inherited by the nonrelativistic cousins of the present model.

Cosmic structure strikes back: The elimination of vector-mediated nonstandard interaction models as a mechanism for sterile neutrino dark matter production

We revisit sterile neutrino production enabled by nonstandard interactions (NSIs) among active neutrinos mediated by new bosons. We focus on vector mediators, including neutrinophilic, gauged 𝐿 𝜇 −𝐿 𝜏 , and 𝐵−𝐿 realizations, that modify in-medium dispersion and scattering, thereby altering the active-sterile conversion history. Building on a novel production framework with NSI thermal potentials and collision integrals, we compute nonthermal phase-space distributions across sterile neutrino mixing and NSI parameters and map each point to an equivalent thermal warm dark matter particle mass 𝑚 th via linear theory transfer function fitting with the cosmological structure formation Boltzmann solver. This enables a direct reinterpretation of state-of-the-art structure formation limits from Milky Way satellites, strong lensing, and the Lyman-𝛼 forest. These limits, in conjunction with x-ray decay searches, as well as results from a wide variety of particle physics experiments allow for a more complete examination of these models. We find that these vector-mediated models are ruled out when the full combination of current constraints, listed above, are taken into account. NSI scalar-mediated models and models with low reheating temperatures remain viable.

Vector boson pair production at one loop: analytic results for the process $q\bar{q}$$ℓ\bar{ℓ}$$ℓ'\bar{ℓ}'g$

We present compact analytic results for the one-loop amplitude for the process 0 → $q\bar{q}$$ℓ\bar{ℓ}$$ℓ'\bar{ℓ}'g$, relevant for both the production of a pair of Z and W-bosons in association with a jet. We focus on the gauge-invariant contribution mediated by a loop of quarks. We explicitly include all effects of the loop-quark mass m, appropriate for the production of a pair of Z-bosons. In the limit m → 0, our results are also applicable to the production of W-boson pairs, mediated by a loop of massless quarks. Implemented in a numerical code, the results are fast. The calculation uses novel advancements in spinor-helicity simplification techniques, for the first time applied beyond five-point massless kinematics. We make use of primary decompositions from algebraic-geometry, which now involve non-radical ideals, and p-adic numbers from number theory. We show how to infer whether numerator polynomials belong to symbolic powers of non-radical ideals through numerical evaluations.

Measurements of ${\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ production cross sections and constraints on anomalous triple gauge couplings at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {TeV} $

The production of Z boson pairs in proton–proton (${\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} $) collisions, ${{\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} \rightarrow ({\mathrm{Z}}/\gamma ^*)({\mathrm{Z}}/\gamma ^*) \rightarrow 2\ell 2\ell '}$, where ${\ell ,\ell ' = {\mathrm{e}}}$ or ${{\upmu }}$, is studied at a center-of-mass energy of 13$\,\text {TeV}$ with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$, collected during 2016–2018. The ${\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ production cross section, $\sigma _{\text {tot}} ({\mathrm{p}} {\mathrm{p}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} ) = 17.4 \pm 0.3 \,\text {(stat)} \pm 0.5 \,\text {(syst)} \pm 0.4 \,\text {(theo)} \pm 0.3 \,\text {(lumi)} \text { pb} $, measured for events with two pairs of opposite-sign, same-flavor leptons produced in the mass region ${60< m_{\ell ^+\ell ^-} < 120\,\text {GeV}}$ is consistent with standard model predictions. Differential cross sections are also measured and agree with theoretical predictions. The invariant mass distribution of the four-lepton system is used to set limits on anomalous ${\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ and ${{\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} \gamma }$ couplings.

Hybrid Oscillator-Qubit Quantum Processors: Instruction Set Architectures, Abstract Machine Models, and Applications

This tutorial offers a pedagogical guide to hybrid quantum processors that integrate discrete-variable (DV) qubits and continuous-variable (CV) oscillators. Aimed at computer scientists, engineers, and physicists, it provides an overview of the experimental, algorithmic, and architectural aspects of this novel and rapidly developing hardware model. Experimental realizations of this model include superconducting, trapped-ion, and neutral-atom platforms. By combining DV and CV components, hybrid oscillator-qubit processors enable a powerful new paradigm that offers complementary strengths for quantum control, error correction, computation, and simulation. Working toward the goal of a full-stack system connecting applications to CV-DV hardware, we define and formulate abstract machine models and instruction set architectures. These essential abstractions enable codesign of hardware and software, and resource estimation for exploring the potential of current and future hardware for computational and simulation tasks. Using these abstractions, we present both new and existing examples that illustrate the benefits of hybrid CV-DV processors relative to traditional DV-only hardware in computation as well as quantum simulation of physical models. Examples include algorithms for transferring states between DV and CV systems, performing the quantum Fourier transform, and simulation of lattice gauge theories. Relative to qubit-only hardware, the bosonic degrees of freedom natively available in hybrid architectures can substantially reduce the circuit complexity of simulations for physical models containing bosons. A key technique is the extension of quantum signal processing ideas to CV-DV systems. This work is intended to serve as a timely and comprehensive guide to this relatively unexplored yet promising approach to quantum computation and to provide a road map to guide future development.

Non-Fermi Liquids from Kinetic Constraints in Tilted Optical Lattices

Here we study Fermi-Hubbard models with kinetically constrained dynamics that conserves both total particle number and total center of mass, a situation that arises when interacting fermions are placed in strongly tilted optical lattices. Through a combination of analytics and numerics, we show how the kinetic constraints stabilize an exotic non-Fermi liquid phase described by fermions coupled to a gapless bosonic field, which in several respects mimics a dynamical gauge field. This offers a novel route towards the study of non-Fermi liquid phases in the precision environments afforded by ultracold atom platforms.

SEARCHING FOR LONG-LIVED DARK PHOTONS WITH THE HEAVY PHOTON SEARCH EXPERIMENT

A heavy photon (also called a dark photon or A0 ) is a hypothetical vector boson that arises from a massive U(1) abelian gauge symmetry. Heavy photons kinetically mix with the Standard Model photon, thus they are a natural portal to hidden sectors that are favored in a variety of dark sector scenarios, particularly for dark matter at the sub-GeV mass scale. The Heavy Photon Search Experiment (HPS) is a fixed target experiment at Je↵erson Laboratory dedicated to searching for heavy photons in the MeV - GeV mass range and kinetic mixing strength ✏2 ⇠ 10

Measurement of the Zγ production cross section and search for anomalous neutral triple gauge couplings in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV

A measurement of the fiducial cross section of the associated production of a Z boson and a high-p$_{T}$ photon, where the Z decays to two neutrinos, and a search for anomalous triple gauge couplings are reported. The results are based on data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV during 2016-2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. The fiducial Zγ cross section, where a photon with a p$_{T}$ greater than 225 GeV is produced in association with a Z, and the Z decays to a $ \upnu \overline{\upnu} $ pair $ \left(\mathrm{Z}\left(\upnu \overline{\upnu}\right)\upgamma \right) $, is measured to be $ {23.3}_{-1.3}^{+1.4} $ fb, in agreement, within uncertainties, with the standard model prediction. The differential cross section as a function of the photon p$_{T}$ has been measured and compared with standard model predictions computed at next-to-leading and at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Constraints have been placed on the presence of anomalous couplings that affect the ZZγ and Zγγ vertex using the p$_{T}$ spectrum of the photons. The observed 95% confidence level intervals for CP-conserving $ {h}_3^{\upgamma} $ and $ {h}_4^{\upgamma} $ are determined to be (−3.4, 3.5)×10$^{−4}$ and (−6.8, 6.8)×10$^{−7}$, and for $ {h}_3^{\mathrm{Z}} $ and $ {h}_4^{\mathrm{Z}} $ they are (−2.2, 2.2)×10$^{−4}$ and (−4.1, 4.2)×10$^{−7}$, respectively. These are the strictest limits to date on $ {h}_3^{\upgamma} $, $ {h}_3^{\mathrm{Z}} $ and $ {h}_4^{\mathrm{Z}} $.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Weak bosons as partons below 10 TeV partonic center-of-momentum

We investigate the modeling of weak boson number densities for leptons and hadrons in practical calculations in the Standard Model. Working in the framework of the Effective $W$ Approximation (EWA) and in $R_\xi$ and axial gauges, we derive the unrenormalized, tree-level parton number density functions for weak bosons from massless leptons at next-to-leading power in the collinear expansion. Corrections exhibit a number of properties, including those conjectured but never universally derived. Parallels with heavy quark factorization are also found. We avoid pathologies through a novel set of kinematical consistency conditions. When satisfied, good agreement between the full and approximated matrix elements is achieved. Findings suggest that the EWA may be testable at the Large Hadron Collider with $450$ fb$^{-1}$ luminosity of same-sign $WW$ scattering data at $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV.

JIMWLK on a quantum computer

We propose a method for solving the Jalilian-Marian-Iancu-McLerran-Weigert-Leonidov-Kovner (JIMWLK) evolution equation on quantum computers. Our approach exploits the reformulation of the JIMWLK equation as a Lindblad master equation governing the rapidity evolution of the hadronic density matrix, as established in prior work. To render the problem tractable for quantum simulation, we introduce several approximations: the two-dimensional transverse plane is reduced to a one-dimensional radial lattice by assuming azimuthal symmetry of the jump operators; the gauge group is restricted to SU(2); and the infinite Wilson lines of the JIMWLK equation are replaced by finite Wilson links along the light-cone direction. The resulting bosonic Hilbert space is truncated using the electric field basis familiar from Hamiltonian lattice gauge theory, with states restricted to angular momenta 𝑗 ≤ 𝑗 max . We derive the matrix elements of the JIMWLK Lindblad jump operators in this basis. As a benchmark, we demonstrate rapid convergence of the fundamental dipole expectation value with 𝑗 max for both pure and mixed Gaussian initial density matrices. For the simplest truncation, 𝑗 max =1/2, we implement the Lindblad evolution using a quantum simulation algorithm verified with the Qiskit statevector simulator by decomposing the non-unitary evolution operator into a linear combination of unitaries. This work establishes a concrete pathway toward quantum simulation of high-energy quantum chromodynamics evolution equations, with direct relevance to the physics program of the Electron-Ion Collider.

Pole skipping in holographic theories with gauge and fermionic fields

Abstract Using covariant expansions, recent work showed that pole skipping happens in general holographic theories with bosonic fields at frequencies i(l b −s)2πT, wherel b is the highest integer spin in the theory andstakes all positive integer values. We revisit this formalism in theories with gauge symmetry and upgrade the pole-skipping condition so that it works without having to remove the gauge redundancy. We also extend the formalism by incorporating fermions with general spins and interactions and show that their presence generally leads to a separate tower of pole-skipping points at frequencies i(l f −s)2πT,l f being the highest half-integer spin in the theory andsagain taking all positive integer values. We also demonstrate the practical value of this formalism using a selection of examples with spins 0,$$ \frac{1}{2} $$ 1 2 ,1,$$ \frac{3}{2} $$ 3 2 ,2.

Differential cross-section measurements for the electroweak production of dijets in association with a Z boson in proton–proton collisions at ATLAS

Differential cross-section measurements are presented for the electroweak production of two jets in association with a Z boson. These measurements are sensitive to the vector-boson fusion production mechanism and provide a fundamental test of the gauge structure of the Standard Model. The analysis is performed using proton–proton collision data collected by ATLAS at √s=13 TeV and with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . The differential cross-sections are measured in the Z→ℓ + ℓ - decay channel (ℓ=e,μ) as a function of four observables: the dijet invariant mass, the rapidity interval spanned by the two jets, the signed azimuthal angle between the two jets, and the transverse momentum of the dilepton pair. The data are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution and are sufficiently precise to distinguish between different state-of-the-art theoretical predictions calculated using Powheg+Pythia8, Herwig7+Vbfnlo and Sherpa 2.2. The differential cross-sections are used to search for anomalous weak-boson self-interactions using a dimension-six effective field theory. The measurement of the signed azimuthal angle between the two jets is found to be particularly sensitive to the interference between the Standard Model and dimension-six scattering amplitudes and provides a direct test of charge-conjugation and parity invariance in the weak-boson self-interactions.

Origin of gauge invariance in string theory

A first quantization of the space-time embedding Chi exp mu and the world-sheet metric rho of the open bosonic string. The world-sheet metric rho decouples from S-matrix elements in 26 dimensions. This formulation of the theory naturally includes 26-dimensional gauge transformations. The gauge invariance of S-matrix elements is a direct consequence of the decoupling of rho. Second quantization leads to a string field Phi(Chi exp mu, rho) with a gauge-covariant equation of motion.

Search for new physics in the τ lepton plus missing transverse momentum final state in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for physics beyond the standard model (SM) in the final state with a hadronically decaying tau lepton and a neutrino is presented. This analysis is based on data recorded by the CMS experiment from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{–1}$. The transverse mass spectrum is analyzed for the presence of new physics. No significant deviation from the SM prediction is observed. Limits are set on the production cross section of a W' boson decaying into a tau lepton and a neutrino. Lower limits are set on the mass of the sequential SM-like heavy charged vector boson and the mass of a quantum black hole. Upper limits are placed on the couplings of a new boson to the SM fermions. Constraints are put on a nonuniversal gauge interaction model and an effective field theory model. For the first time, upper limits on the cross section of t-channel leptoquark (LQ) exchange are presented. These limits are translated into exclusion limits on the LQ mass and on its coupling in the t-channel. The sensitivity of this analysis extends into the parameter space of LQ models that attempt to explain the anomalies observed in B meson decays. The limits presented for the various interpretations are the most stringent to date. Additionally, a model-independent limit is provided.
