Collisionless tearing in a field-reversed sheet pinch assuming nonparallel propagation

The problem of collisionless linear tearing is examined assuming a wave vector with a component normal to the equilibrium field. The geometry is defined and the general form of the linear dispersion equation is calculated. The linear theory results when k is parallel to B are reviewed, and Ampere's law is calculated for the external adiabatic region when k times B does not equal zero, using two-fluid theory. A solution is obtained for the approximate form of the perturbed currents and vector potential assuming quasi-parallel k. The resonant current contributions within the singular layer are calculated, obtaining an estimate of the dispersion equation. The form of the adiabatic currents within the singular layer is calculated, showing that an x-z current system persists even in the limit k perpendicular to B goes to zero. Finally, the perturbed vector potential solutions across the singular layer are matched to obtain the shape of the complete eigenfunction.

Unstable transition properties of the driven magnetohydrodynamic sheet pinch

The unstable transition behavior of a bounded current-carrying two-dimensional magnetofluid is explored, using the hydrodynamic theory developed for parallel shear flows as a guide. Nonlinear excitation of the higher wavenumbers results in the development of electric current sheets of finite extent, as well as the formation of 'attraction currents' centered at the magnetic O-points. A secondary instability mechanism, the dynamic tearing of the electric current sheet, is also observed. This dynamic tearing leads to sawtoothlike temporal oscillations in certain global quantities. The long-time state of the system resembles a nonlinearly saturated state with significant excitation of many wavenumbers. Some features of this state can be understood by means of a Landau nonlinear stability theory based on certain assumptions about the perturbation energy balance.

Controlled-Pinch Spot Welder

Handheld spot-welding gun clamps workpiece under air pressure instead of under operator's hand pressure. Trigger actuates both air pressure and welding current. Makes spot welds more repeatable and reliable. Reduces amount of manual labor required and enables welds to be made at faster rate. Compact and light in weight, reaches restricted area that ordinary commercial welding guns cannot.

Single and Multi-Pulse Low-Energy Conical Theta Pinch Inductive Pulsed Plasma Thruster Performance

Fabricated and tested CTP IPPTs at cone angles of 20deg, 38deg, and 60deg, and performed direct single-pulse impulse bit measurements with continuous gas flow. Single pulse performance highest for 38deg angle with impulse bit of approx.1 mN-s for both argon and xenon. Estimated efficiencies low, but not unexpectedly so based on historical data trends and the direction of the force vector in the CTP. Capacitor charging system assembled to provide rapid recharging of capacitor bank, permitting repetition-rate operation. IPPT operated at repetition-rate of 5 Hz, at maximum average power of 2.5 kW, representing to our knowledge the highest average power for a repetitively-pulsed thruster. Average thrust in repetition-rate mode (at 5 kV, 75 sccm argon) was greater than simply multiplying the single-pulse impulse bit and the repetition rate.

Hybrid Fuel Coupling in a Pulsed Z-Pinch Rocket Engine

The work presented here sought to explore a portion of the parameter space of a hybrid nuclear fuel in regards to ignition and burn by analyzing the effect of initial geometry and thermodynamic conditions. The authors performed 0D power balance and 1D burn wave calculations to determine temperature progression and energy production for defined initial conditions. Geometries examined are representative of concept fuels for a Pulsed Fission-Fusion (PuFF) engine. This work focuses on lithium deuteride and uranium 235 for the fuel since these are seen as leading candidates for PuFF. Presented below is a power balance illustrating a reduction in the energy and density required to breakeven of hybrid fuels in comparison with fusion fuels. Also the impact of fusion and fissile fuel quantities upon initial energies is presented. One can see that the initial energy required to breakeven in a hybrid cylindrical nuclear fuel decreases with decreasing fissile liner thickness, decreasing fusion fuel core radius, and increasing compression ratio of the fusion fuel.
