A new-old approach to composite scalars with chiral fermion constituents

We develop a dynamical, Lorentz invariant theory of composite scalars in configuration space consisting of chiral fermions, interacting by the perturbative exchange of a massive “gluon” of coupling g 0 and mass M 0 2 (the coloron model). The formalism is inspired by, but goes beyond, old ideas of Yukawa and the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. It yields a non-pointlike internal wave-function of the bound state, ϕ ( r ) , which satisfies a Schrödinger-Klein-Gordon (SKG) equation with eigenvalue μ 2 . For super-critical coupling, g 0 2 > g 0 c 2 , we have μ 2 < 0 leading to spontaneous symmetry breaking. The binding of chiral fermions is semiclassical, not loop-level as in NJL. The mass scale is determined by the interaction as in NJL. We mainly focus on the short-distance, large M 0 2 limit, yielding an NJL pointlike interaction, but the bound state internal wave-function, ϕ ( r → ) , remains spatially extended and dilutes ϕ ( 0 ) . This leads to power-law suppression of the induced Yukawa and quartic couplings and requires radically less fine-tuning of a hierarchy than does the NJL model. We include a discussion of loop corrections of the theory. A realistic top condensation model appears possible.

Search for direct top squark pair production in events with one lepton, jets, and missing transverse momentum at 13 TeV with the CMS experiment

A search for direct top squark pair production is presented. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC during 2016, 2017, and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{−1}$. The search is carried out using events with a single isolated electron or muon, multiple jets, and large transverse momentum imbalance. The observed data are consistent with the expectations from standard model processes. Exclusions are set in the context of simplified top squark pair production models. Depending on the model, exclusion limits at 95% confidence level for top squark masses up to 1.2 TeV are set for a massless lightest supersymmetric particle, assumed to be the neutralino. For models with top squark masses of 1 TeV, neutralino masses up to 600 GeV are excluded.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for flavor changing neutral current interactions of the top quark in final states with a photon and additional jets in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for the production of a top quark in association with a photon and additional jets via flavor changing neutral current interactions is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 . The search is performed by looking for processes where a single top quark is produced in association with a photon, or a pair of top quarks where one of the top quarks decays into a photon and an up or charm quark. Events with an electron or a muon, a photon, one or more jets, and missing transverse momentum are selected. Multivariate analysis techniques are used to discriminate signal and standard model background processes. No significant deviation is observed over the predicted background. Observed (expected) upper limits are set on the branching fractions of top quark decays: B ( t → u γ ) < 0.95 × 10 - 5 ( 1.20 × 10 - 5 ) and B ( t → c γ ) < 1.51 × 10 - 5 ( 1.54 × 10 - 5 ) at 95% confidence level, assuming a single nonzero coupling at a time. The obtained limit for B ( t → u γ ) is similar to the current best limit, while the limit for B ( t → c γ ) is significantly tighter than previous results.

Higgs coupling measurements and the scale of new physics

A primary goal of present and future colliders is measuring the Higgs couplings to Standard Model (SM) particles. Any observed deviation from the SM predictions for these couplings is a sign of new physics whose energy scale can be bounded from above by requiring tree-level unitarity. In this paper, we extend previous work on unitarity bounds from the Higgs cubic coupling to Higgs couplings to vector bosons and top quarks. We find that HL-LHC measurements of these couplings compatible with current experimental bounds may point to a scale that can be explored at the HL-LHC or a next-generation collider. Our approach is completely model-independent: we assume only that there are no light degrees of freedom below the scale of new physics, and allow arbitrary values for the infinitely many couplings beyond the SM as long as they are in agreement with current measurements. We also extend and clarify the methodology of this analysis, and show that if the scale of new physics is above the TeV scale, then the deviations can be described by the leading higher-dimension gauge invariant operator, as in the SM effective field theory.

Elimination of QCD Renormalization Scale and Scheme Ambiguities

The setting of the renormalization scale (μ r ) in the perturbative QCD (pQCD) is one of the crucial problems for achieving precise fixed-order pQCD predictions. The conventional prescription is to take its value as the typical momentum transfer Q in a given process, and theoretical uncertainties are then evaluated by varying it over an arbitrary range. The conventional scale-setting procedure introduces arbitrary scheme-and-scale ambiguities in fixed-order pQCD predictions. The principle of maximum conformality (PMC) provides a systematic way to eliminate the renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities. The PMC method has rigorous theoretical foundations; it satisfies the renormalization group invariance (RGI) and all of the self-consistency conditions derived from the renormalization group. The PMC has now been successfully applied to many physical processes. In this paper, we summarize recent PMC applications, including event shape observables and heavy quark pair production near the threshold region in e + e – annihilation and top-quark decay at hadronic colliders. In addition, estimating the contributions related to the uncalculated higher-order terms is also summarized. These results show that the major theoretical uncertainties caused by different choices of μ r are eliminated, and the improved pQCD predictions are thus obtained, demonstrating the generality and applicability of the PMC.

Hint of a new scalar interaction in LHCb data?

Abstract We explain recent LHCb measurements of the lepton universality ratios, $$R_{D^{(*)}}^{\tau /\ell }\equiv \frac{\mathcal {B}(\bar{B} \rightarrow D^{(*)+} \tau ^- \bar{\nu }_\tau )}{\mathcal {B}(\bar{B} \rightarrow D^{(*)+}\ell ^- \bar{\nu }_\ell )}$$ R D ( ∗ ) τ / ℓ ≡ B ( B ¯ → D ( ∗ ) + τ - ν ¯ τ ) B ( B ¯ → D ( ∗ ) + ℓ - ν ¯ ℓ ) and $${R(\Lambda _c^+)}^{\tau /\ell } \equiv \frac{\mathcal {B}(\Lambda _b \rightarrow \Lambda _c^+ \tau ^- \bar{\nu }_{\tau })}{\mathcal {B}(\Lambda _b \rightarrow \Lambda _c^+ \ell ^- \bar{\nu }_{\ell })}$$ R ( Λ c + ) τ / ℓ ≡ B ( Λ b → Λ c + τ - ν ¯ τ ) B ( Λ b → Λ c + ℓ - ν ¯ ℓ ) with $$\ell =\mu $$ ℓ = μ , via new physics that affects $$R_D^{\tau /\ell }$$ R D τ / ℓ and $$R(\Lambda _c^+)^{\tau /\ell }$$ R ( Λ c + ) τ / ℓ but not $$R_{D^*}^{\tau /\ell }$$ R D ∗ τ / ℓ . The scalar operator in the effective theory for new physics is indicated. We find that the forward-backward asymmetry and $$\tau $$ τ polarization in $$\bar{B} \rightarrow D^+ \tau ^{-} \bar{\nu }_{\tau }$$ B ¯ → D + τ - ν ¯ τ and $$\Lambda _b \rightarrow \Lambda _c^+ \tau ^- \bar{\nu }_{\tau }$$ Λ b → Λ c + τ - ν ¯ τ decays are significantly affected by the scalar interaction. We construct a simple two Higgs doublet model as a realization of our scenario and consider lepton universality in semileptonic charm and top decays, radiative B decay, B -mixing, and $$Z \rightarrow b \bar{b}$$ Z → b b ¯ .

Searches for violation of Lorentz invariance in top quark pair production using dilepton events in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions

A search for violation of Lorentz invariance in the production of top quark pairs ($t\bar{t}$) is presented. The measured normalized differential $t\bar{t}$production cross section, as a function of the sidereal time, is examined for potential modulations induced by Lorentz-invariance breaking operators in an effective field theory extension of the standard model (SM). The cross section is measured from collision events collected by the CMS detector at a center-of-mass-energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 77.8 fb −1 , and containing one electron and one muon. The results are found to be compatible with zero, in agreement with the SM, and are used to place upper limits at 68% confidence level on the magnitude of the Lorentz-violating couplings ranging from 1–8 × 10 −3 . This is the first precision test of the isotropy in special relativity with top quarks at the LHC, restricting further the bounds on such couplings by up to two orders of magnitude with respect to previous searches conducted at the Tevatron.

Topologically Protected Flatness in Chiral Moiré Heterostructures

The observation of delicate correlated phases in twisted heterostructures of graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides suggests that moiré flat bands are intrinsically resilient against certain types of disorder. Here, we investigate the robustness of moiré flat bands in the chiral limit of the Bistritzer-MacDonald model—applicable to both platforms in certain limits—and demonstrate drastic differences between the first magic angle and higher magic angles in response to chiral symmetric disorder that arise, for instance, from lattice relaxation. We understand these differences using a hidden constant of motion that permits the decomposition of the non-Abelian gauge field induced by interlayer tunnelings into two decoupled Abelian ones. At all magic angles, the resulting effective magnetic field splits into an anomalous contribution and a fluctuating part. The anomalous field maps the moiré flat bands onto a zeroth Dirac Landau level, whose flatness withstands any chiral symmetric perturbation such as nonuniform magnetic fields due to a topological index theorem—thereby underscoring a topological mechanism for band flatness. Only the first magic angle can fully harness this topological protection due to its weak fluctuating magnetic field. In higher magic angles, the amplitude of fluctuations largely exceeds the anomalous contribution, which we find results in a physically meaningless chiral operator and an extremely large sensitivity to microscopic details and an exponential collapse of the single-particle gap. Through numerical simulations, we further study various types of disorder and identify the scattering processes that are enhanced or suppressed in the chiral limit. Interestingly, we find that the topological suppression of disorder broadening persists away from the chiral limit and is further accentuated by isolating a single sublattice polarized flat band in energy. Our analysis suggests the Berry curvature hot spot at the top of the K and K ′ valence band in the transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers is essential for the stability of its moiré flat bands and their correlated states. Superconductivity and a van Hove singularity confined to the surface of a topological semimetal

The interplay between topology and superconductivity generated great interest in condensed matter physics. Here, we unveil an unconventional two-dimensional superconducting state in the Dirac nodal line semimetal ZrAs 2 which is exclusively confined to the top and bottom surfaces within the crystal's ab plane. As a remarkable consequence, we present the first clear evidence of a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition occurring solely on a material's surface-specifically, ZrAs 2 -unlike the inconsistent reports on PtBi 2 , CaAgP, and CaAg 1-x Pd x P. Furthermore, we find that these same surfaces also host a two-dimensional van Hove singularity near the Fermi energy. This leads to enhanced electronic correlations that contribute to the stabilization of superconductivity at the surface of ZrAs 2 . The'surface-confined nature of the van Hove singularity and associated superconductivity, realized for the first time, allows exploring the interplay between low-dimensional quantum topology and superconductivity in a bulk material without resorting to the superconducting proximity effect.

Millimeter-Scale Exfoliation of hBN with Tunable Flake Thickness for Scalable Encapsulation

As a two-dimensional (2D) dielectric material, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is in high demand for applications in photonics, nonlinear optics, and nanoelectronics. Unfortunately, the high-throughput preparation of macroscopic-scale, high-quality hBN flakes with controlled thickness is an ongoing challenge, limiting device fabrication and technological integration. In this report we present a metal thin-film exfoliation method to prepare hBN flakes with millimeter-scale dimension, near-unity yields, and tunable flake thickness distribution from 1-7 layers, a substantial improvement over scotch tape exfoliation. The single crystallinity and high quality of the exfoliated hBN are demonstrated with optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and second harmonic generation. We further explore a possible mechanism for the effectiveness and selectivity based on thin-film residual stress measurements, density functional theory calculations, and transmission electron microscopy imaging of the deposited metal films. We find that the magnitude of the residual tensile stress induced by thin film deposition plays a key role in determining exfoliated flake thickness in a manner which closely resembles 3D semiconductor spalling. Lastly, we demonstrate that our exfoliated, large-area hBN flakes can be readily incorporated as encapsulating layers for other 2D monolayers. Altogether, this method brings us one step closer to the high throughput, mass production of hBN-based 2D photonic, optoelectronic, and quantum devices.

Reanalysis of the top-quark pair hadroproduction and a precise determination of the top-quark pole mass at the LHC *

In this study, we calculate the $t\bar{t}$ pQCD production cross-section at the NNLO and determine the top-quark pole mass from recent measurements at the LHC at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{S}=13$ TeV to a high precision by applying the principle of maximum conformality (PMC). The PMC provides a systematic method that rigorously eliminates QCD renormalization scale ambiguities by summing the nonconformal $\beta$ contributions into the QCD coupling constant. The PMC predictions satisfy the requirements of renormalization group invariance, including renormalization scheme independence, and the PMC scales accurately reflect the virtuality of the underlying production subprocesses. By using the PMC, an improved prediction for the $t\bar{t}$ production cross-section is obtained without scale ambiguities, which in turn provides a precise value for the top-quark pole mass. Moreover, the prediction of PMC calculations that the magnitudes of higher-order PMC predictions are well within the error bars predicted from the known lower-order has been demonstrated for the top-quark pair production. The resulting determination of the top-quark pole mass, $m_t^{\rm{pole}}=172.5\pm1.4$ GeV, from the LHC measurement at $\sqrt{S}=13$ TeV agrees with the current world average cited by the Particle Data Group (PDG). The PMC prediction provides an important high-precision test of the consistency of pQCD and the SM at $\sqrt{S}=13$ TeV with previous LHC measurements at lower CM energies.

Fully self-consistent finite-temperature $GW$ in Gaussian Bloch orbitals for solids

In this work, we present algorithmic and implementation details for the fully self-consistent finite-temperature $GW$ method in Gaussian Bloch orbitals for solids. Our implementation is based on the finite-temperature Green's function formalism in which all equations are solved on the imaginary axis, without resorting to analytical continuation during the self-consistency. No quasiparticle approximation is employed and all matrix elements of the self-energy are explicitly evaluated. The method is tested by evaluating the band gaps of selected semiconductors and insulators. We show agreement with other, differently formulated, finite-temperature sc ⁢$GW$ implementations when finite-size corrections and basis-set errors are taken into account. By migrating computationally intensive calculations to graphics processing units, we obtain scalable results on large supercomputers with nearly optimal performance. Our work demonstrates the applicability of Gaussian orbital based sc⁢ $GW$ for ab initio correlated material simulations and provides a sound starting point for embedding methods built on top of $GW$.

Full event interpretation with machine-learning-based particle-flow reconstruction in the CMS detector

The particle-flow (PF) algorithm constructs a global description of each particle collision by producing a comprehensive list of final-state particles, and is central to event reconstruction in the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The existing PF implementation relies on physics-motivated heuristics and assumptions that can be replaced by machine-learning (ML) models trained directly on simulated data and naturally suited to modern graphics processing units (GPUs). A state-of-the-art ML-based PF (MLPF) reconstruction algorithm, implemented within the CMS software framework, is presented. The MLPF algorithm performs a learnable full-event reconstruction on GPUs, generalizes across detector conditions and collision energies, and replaces multiple modular reconstruction steps with a single unified model. Physics performance comparable to standard PF reconstruction is achieved in both simulation and data, with improved jet energy resolution and inference time. In simulated top quark-antiquark events under LHC Run-3 (2023-2024) conditions, the jet energy resolution improves by 10-20% for jets with transverse momentum between 30-100 GeV. Inference time is evaluated using simulated multijet events, with a median of $20\,\hbox {ms}$ per event on an Nvidia L4 GPU, compared to approximately $110\,\hbox {ms}$ for the standard CMS PF reconstruction.

CMDV (CM)4 Project - University of Washington contribution. Final report

The original goal of this project was to diagnose and improve CLUBB, the turbulence and cloud fraction parameterization used in DOE’s E3SM model. For this purpose, we planned to use large-eddy simulation (LES) and ARM observations from the NE Pacific Ocean and the SGP site, in coordination with ARM’s LASSO program. It was determined that for these cloud regimes, many of the turbulent ‘moment closures’ which underlie CLUBB’s mathematical formulation are inconsistent with LES, which is an appropriate benchmark for testing this. The research assistant found that these closures could be more accurately formulated using machine learning using the LES as a training dataset. However the resulting parameterization proved to quickly drift away from physical plausibility. A novel machine-learning based boundary layer parameterization called MARBLE based on matching the time evolution of a parameterized cloud-topped boundary layer to reanalysis was then developed and published.
