Over-under double-pass interferometer

An over-under double pass interferometer in which the beamsplitter area and thickness can be reduced to conform only with optical flatness considerations was achieved by offsetting the optical center line of one cat's-eye retroreflector relative to the optical center line of the other in order that one split beam be folded into a plane distinct from the other folded split beam. The beamsplitter is made transparent in one area for a first folded beam to be passed to a mirror for doubling back and is made totally reflective in another area for the second folded beam to be reflected to a mirror for doubling back. The two beams thus doubled back are combined in the central, beamsplitting area of the beamsplitting and passed to a detector. This makes the beamsplitter insensitive to minimum thickness requirements and selection of material.

Ion beam scattering by ion-acoustic turbulence

Measurements are reported of the attenuation of an ion beam in a multidipole double-plasma (DP) device. In addition to charge-exchange collisions of the beam ions with the gas atoms, ion scattering by the three-dimensional turbulence produced by the beam itself is found to contribute significantly to the beam attenuation.

A study of control approaches for large-angle beam slewing with an adaptive truss

This paper presents an analytical study of large-angle beam slewing with a double-octahedral adaptive truss and documents the performance of different control laws for simultaneous vibration control and beam slewing. A general nonlinear model of an adaptive truss and flexible beam is derived which includes a degree-of-freedom previously considered negligible for a double-octahedral adaptive truss actuated at its mid-plane. Linear and nonlinear, gain-scheduled, control laws are developed and applied to the nonlinear model for various large-angle slewing maneuvers. The nonlinear, gain-scheduled, control law is found to perform better than the linear control laws.

Displays for flight-training simulators rapidly aligned with aid of integrated optical instrument. Calibrations and tests such as aligning boresight of display with respect to user's eyes, checking and adjusting display horizon, checking image sharpness, measuring illuminance of displayed scenes, and measuring distance of optical focus of scene performed with single unit. New instrument combines all measurement devices in single, compact, integrated unit. Requires just one initial setup. Employs laser and produces narrow, collimated beam for greater measurement accuracy. Uses only one moving part, double right prism, to position laser beam.

Theory of electron-positron showers in double radio sources

A black hole of mass of about 300 million solar masses is assumed to be present in the nucleus of an active galaxy or quasar. With an axial magnetic field near 1000 gauss, a potential drop 10 to the 19th volts is generated by the unipolar induction of a rotating accretion disk surrounding the black hole. The possibility that the acceleration of electrons or positrons in the unipolar fields initiates an electromagnetic cascade shower at distances at least 10 to the 16th cm from the black hole is investigated. The scattering medium for the shower is considered to be the spectrum of low energy photons originating from the inner region of the disk. It is found that at completion of the cascade, power-law energy spectra of relativistic electrons and positrons and of gamma-rays emerge under appropriate conditions. If the cascade-initiating particles are collimated, the electrons and positrons emerge in a collimated beam. Such beams may power extragalactic double radio sources.

General Bohm and Langmuir conditions for a strong double layer in space plasmas

The appropriate Bohm and Langmuir conditions when there are three beam-type particles passing through the double layer in addition to the usual two species of trapped particles are derived. It is shown that the Langmuir conditions, which normally imply a net current through the double layer, are consistent with zero net current when the class of accreting ions is included. It is also found that the Bohm criterion is quite different from its usual form, and that it has nothing to do with instabilities of the plasma at some critical level, as is believed to be true.

High-temperature mass spectrometry - Vaporization of group 4-B metal carbides

The high temperature vaporization of the metal-carbon systems TiC, ZrC, HfC, and ThC was studied by the Knudsen effusion - mass spectrometric method. For each system the metal dicarbide and tetracarbide molecular species were identified in the gas phase. Relative ion currents of the carbides and metals were measured as a function of temperature. Second- and third-law methods were used to determine enthalpies. Maximum values were established for the dissociation energies of the metal monocarbide molecules TiC, ZrC, HfC, and ThC. Thermodynamic functions used in the calculations are discussed in terms of assumed molecular structures and electronic contributions to the partition functions. The trends shown by the dissociation energies of the carbides of Group 4B are compared with those of neighboring groups and discussed in relation to the corresponding oxides and chemical bonding. The high temperature molecular beam inlet system and double focusing mass spectrometer are described.

Recent work on a microwave ion source

The performance of a microwave (2.45 GHz) plasma-disk ion source using a cylindrical microwave cavity is described. The operating characteristics in argon and xenon gases with 50-200 W of input power and gas flow rates from 10-80 sccm are presented. In particular, extracted beam current versus accelerating voltage, and specific energy vs. mass utilization efficiency and extracted beam current are presented. Double Langmuir probe measurements indicate that electron densities in excess of 10 to the 12th per cu cm can be readily achieved in the microwave generated plasma.

Low Noise 1.2 THz SIS Receiver

We present the development of a low noise superconductor insulator superconductor (SIS) mixer for the 1.1 - 1.25 THz heterodyne receiver of FIRST space radiotelescope. The quasi-optical SIS mixer has two NbTiN/AlN/Nb junctions with critical current density 30 kA/sq cm. The individual junction area is close to 0.65 square micrometers. The SIS junctions are coupled to the optical input beam through a planar double slot antenna and a Si hyperhemispherical lens. The minimum DSB receiver noise temperature is 650 K, about 12 hv/k.

A 2.5 kW advanced technology ion thruster

A program has been conducted in order to improve the performance characteristics of 30 cm thrusters. This program was divided into three distinct, but related tasks: (1) the discharge chamber and component design modifications proposed for inclusion in the engineering model thruster were evaluated and engineering specifications were verified; (2) thrust losses which result from the contributions of double charged ions and nonaxial ion trajectories to the ion beam current were measured and (3) the specification and verification of power processor and control requirements of the engineering model thruster design were demonstrated. Proven design modifications which provide improved efficiencies are incorporated into the engineering model thruster during a structural re-design without introducing additional delay in schedule or new risks. In addition, a considerable amount of data is generated on the relation of double ion production and beam divergence to thruster parameters. Overall thruster efficiency is increased from 68% to 71% at full power, including corrections for double ion and beam divergence thrust losses.

The scaling of relativistic double-year widths - Poisson-Vlasov solutions and particle-in-cell simulations

The study of relativistic plasma double layers is described through the solution of the one-dimensional, unmagnetized, steady-state Poisson-Vlasov equations and by means of one-dimensional, unmagnetized, particle-in-cell simulations. The thickness vs potential-drop scaling law is extended to relativistic potential drops and relativistic plasma temperatures. The transition in the scaling law for 'strong' double layers suggested by analytical two-beam models by Carlqvist (1982) is confirmed, and causality problems of standard double-layer simulation techniques applied to relativistic plasma systems are discussed.

Cusped magnetic field mercury ion thruster

A residence time approach is used to explain the nonuniform beam current density profile of the SERT II thruster and to propose a magnetic field modification which should produce a highly uniform beam profile. Expressions are derived which relate the thruster performance parameters to the geometry and plasma properties of the discharge chamber. These relationships are applied to a cylindrical discharge chamber model of the SERT II thruster and suggest that, in addition to the magnetic field modification, the discharge chamber length of this thruster should be reduced. These modifications should result in a thruster which has a highly uniform beam profile, good performance, and a low double ion population. Experimental results indicate that at about the same thrust and performance levels the beam flatness parameter of the modified thruster is 40% higher than the SERT II thruster value.

Improved double-pass michelson interferometer

Interferometer design separates beams by offsetting centerlines of cat's-eye retroreflectors vertically rather than horizontally. Since beam splitter is insensitive to minimum-thickness condition in this geometry, relatively-low-cost, optically flat plate can be used.

Exploration of Double Clad Fibers for Increased Stability of Bidirectional Free Space Optical Links

Bidirectional, high data rate, low size, weight, and power (SWaP), and low cost free space optical links are needed for space communication applications to send and receive large volumes of data. We are exploring design strategies for optical transceivers to reduce SWaP and cost through increased misalignment tolerance (pointing requirement reduction) and sharing the optical transmit and receive paths (imposing optical symmetry). In applications where the detector is fiber coupled, the fiber numerical aperture is the main driver of the pointing accuracy requirement. Unfortunately, reducing the pointing requirement by increasing the fiber numerical aperture symmetrically causes instability in received power over small environmental changes. This paper explores double clad fibers as a solution to both reduce the power instability and increase the pointing accuracy tolerance. Double clad fibers can transmit a Gaussian beam from a single mode fiber and receive in a multi-mode aperture. Results show that double clad fiber have an improved misalignment tolerance and a higher stability for small changes in temperature when compared to single mode fibers and multimode fibers. Also, double clad fibers are shown to match the performance of an asymmetrical link design with a single mode transmit fiber and a multimode receive fiber.

Holographic interferometry.

Review of the techniques and applications of holographic interferometry. The recording of a 'reflected-light' hologram with a gas laser is described in order to illustrate the unique optical properties of a hologram. Special types of interferometric measurement, such as stored-beam holographic interferometry and double-exposure holographic interferometry, are then discussed. Applications of gas-laser holographic interferometry to the detection of internal flaws in steel tubing are cited, as well as applications involving the testing of aircraft and automotive tires and aircraft honeycomb composites for bond integrity and the prediction of failure in mechanical components. Finally, applications of the pulsed solid-state ruby laser in holographic interferometry are considered.

Inversion of the resonance line of Sr/+/ produced by optically pumping Sr atoms

A description is presented of an experiment which demonstrates the selective production of excited-state ions by an optical absorption from neutrals. An inversion on the resonance line of Sr(+) was produced by laser excitation of a two-electron transition, followed by ionization of one of the excited electrons by the same laser. A pulsed, mode-locked laser operating at 2680 A was used to excite atoms from the Sr ground level. The same laser then ionized the excited atoms. The 2680-A pump beam was generated by frequency doubling the output of a synchronously pumped mode-locked dye laser in a KDP crystal. It is pointed out that the reported results are significant for the construction of vacuum-ultraviolet and X-ray lasers. Many of the proposed methods for making such lasers depend on the selective production of excited-state ions.
