An examination of the effect of vortex flow on hybrid rocket combustion and performance is underway. Emphasis is on response of the fuel regression rate when subjected to vortex flow. Initial results show that there is a definite effect of the vortex on fuel regression rate. Future work will focus on quantitatively measuring this regression rate. This work is part of an overall program to develop an ultra low cost fuel system for hybrid rocket engines.

User requirements for lithium sulfur batteries are presented. They include careful analysis of design and quality control, along with certain equipment specifications. Some of the specifications include: hermetically sealed cells; lithium limited cells with stoichiometry of lithium to sulfur dioxide as a ratio of one; low moisture content in the cells; and battery capacity.

Mathematical analysis of battery-operated electric vehicles is presented. Attention is focused on assessing the influence of the battery on the mechanical and dynamical characteristics of dc electric motors with series and parallel excitation, as well as on evaluating the influence of the excitation mode and speed control system on the performance of the battery. The superiority of series excitation over parallel excitation with respect to vehicle performance is demonstrated. It is also shown that pulsed control of the electric motor, as compared to potentiometric control, provides a more effective use of the battery and decreases the cost of recharging.
The effect of on-line reconditioning (deep discharge) on a single, Nickel-Hydrogen spacecraft battery in GEO and LEO is considered. A life cycle test was performed in both GEO and LEO to study the effect of reconditioning on the battery's end of discharge voltage (EODV). The results of these tests show that: LEO on-line reconditioning increased the EODV (by approximately 15 cycles to maximum EODV) and the EODV lasted for approximately 300 cycles, but GEO on-line reconditioning decreased the EODV slightly during the first six days and increases significantly after the seventh day. Based on the available data from the life cycle test, it has been concluded that a long life and stable voltage is realizable with the baseline architecture (single battery, single bus) without the need for reconditioning.
Determination of the number of micrometeoroid impact craters on the camera provided an opportunity to make a sensitive direct measurement of the flux of interplanetary dust particles impacting the lunar surface. Optical and scanning electron microscope studies were performed. Low velocity impact and flux analyses are presented.
Acoustic ground boards are used to provide hard reflective surfaces for microphones when taking outdoor measurements. These boards also have a wide variety of potential impacts on the signal received by the microphones. A comprehensive experimental campaign was completed in which various ground board and microphone configurations were tested to determine their effects on the acoustic signals returned by the microphones. Comparisons are made between these setups and a free-field reference case. Normal impedance testing on various combinations of sand, plywood, and ground board material was also completed.
We have used coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to understand the effect of cation size on ion diffusion in polymerized ionic liquids at temperatures well above the glass transition temperature of the polymers. We investigated dependencies of the diffusion constant on the cation radius and static dielectric constant and interpreted these results in terms of underlying structural changes, and decoupling phenomenon. We have found non-monotonic effects of the cation radius on the diffusion constant, with a maximum at an intermediate radius resulting from two different size dependent effects. Changes in the radial distribution functions characterizing spatial distribution of cations with respect to anions result in a monotonic increase in the coordination number. This yields an increase in the effective interaction energy as a function of cation radius, which can explain the decrease in the diffusion constant. This increase is counteracted at small cation radii by a corresponding increase in decoupling of cation and anion dynamics. In addition, the diffusion constant is found to increase on increasing the static dielectric constant for all radii of the cations. These results highlight the significant role of decoupling in designing polymerized ionic liquids with an enhanced diffusion constant of cations.
The effects of rotating cavitation and cavitation surges on the Fastrac Engine Turbopump are described in a viewgraph presentation format. The bent inducer blade dilemma and observations of unsteady data and oscillation components are discussed. The pump-feed system stability modeling assessment is outlined. Recommendations are made urging further investigation.
