AI-Powered Knowledge Graphs for Neuromorphic and Energy-Efficient Computing

The surge in scientific literature obscures breakthroughs and hinders the discovery of new research paths. We propose an artificial intelligence (AI) powered framework using large language models (LLMs) and knowledge graphs (KGs) to automate parts of scientific discovery, focusing on energy-efficient AI circuits. Our hybrid approach combines LLMs, structured data, and ontology-based reasoning to construct a comprehensive knowledge graph that integrates insights across computational neuroscience, spiking neuron models, learning rules, architectural motifs, and neuromorphic device technologies. This multi-domain representation enables the generation of hypotheses that connect biological function with implementable, energy-efficient hardware architectures. Using KG embeddings and graph neural networks, the framework generates hypotheses for novel circuits, validates them through optimization on exascale HPC systems, and with tools like SuperNeuro and Fugu, the most promising designs will be prototyped in hardware. This open-source system aims to accelerate discoveries and bridging neuroscience with hardware innovation, drive collaboration, and unlock new opportunities in low-power AI computing.

Satellite sensing capabilities for surface temperature and meteorological parameters over the ocean

Remote meteorological measurements over the oceans have been used extensively for weather forecasting, ship safety, and global-scale studies of climate and sea conditions. A review is conducted regarding the satellite-sensing capabilities for sea-surface temperature and tropospheric marine meteorological mesurements. The tropospheric measurements are concerned with vertical temperature profiles, integrated water vapor and liquid water, rain, aerosols and surface winds. Attention is also given to several environmental-monitoring applications where satellite sensed synoptic data might be combined with ground and airborne chemical measurements to provide improved assessments of regional and global ennvironmental quality and climatology. Special emphasis is given to current satellite measurement accuracies (errors) and to programs involving U.S. technology. Aspects of sea-surface temperature are treated in detail in connection with extensive studies concentrated in this area.

Effects of ultravacuum and space environment on contact ohmic resistance (AO 138-11)

The experiment was aimed at checking compatibility of the aluminum conductors with conventional conductors and contacts under different conditions of manufacturing (mechanical or magnetostrictive crimping) and storage in laboratory or in long-duration space environment. The electrical characteristics of connections built from nickel-plated conductors and glided copper contacts were noted to vary over the duration of the experiment. These variations are unrelated with the crimping or storage conditions or with metal pairing (nickel-plated aluminum/tinned or silver copper). Such evolutions, even slight, are detrimental to connection quality. The same observations hold for some like connections subjected to long-duration thermal cycles. Therefore, work on aluminum technology was reoriented toward a silver aluminum conductor/ golded aluminum contact solution. The first evaluation test performed according to this definition have yielded satisfactory results.

Parallel Wavefront Analysis for a 4D Interferometer

This software provides a programming interface for automating data collection with a PhaseCam interferometer from 4D Technology, and distributing the image-processing algorithm across a cluster of general-purpose computers. Multiple instances of 4Sight (4D Technology s proprietary software) run on a networked cluster of computers. Each connects to a single server (the controller) and waits for instructions. The controller directs the interferometer to several images, then assigns each image to a different computer for processing. When the image processing is finished, the server directs one of the computers to collate and combine the processed images, saving the resulting measurement in a file on a disk. The available software captures approximately 100 images and analyzes them immediately. This software separates the capture and analysis processes, so that analysis can be done at a different time and faster by running the algorithm in parallel across several processors. The PhaseCam family of interferometers can measure an optical system in milliseconds, but it takes many seconds to process the data so that it is usable. In characterizing an adaptive optics system, like the next generation of astronomical observatories, thousands of measurements are required, and the processing time quickly becomes excessive. A programming interface distributes data processing for a PhaseCam interferometer across a Windows computing cluster. A scriptable controller program coordinates data acquisition from the interferometer, storage on networked hard disks, and parallel processing. Idle time of the interferometer is minimized. This architecture is implemented in Python and JavaScript, and may be altered to fit a customer s needs.

BPTAP: A New Approach to IP over DTN

Traditional Internet protocols have been widely deployed for a variety of applications. However such protocols generally perform poorly in situations in which, round trip delays are very large (interplanetary distances) or . persistent connectivity is not always available (widely dispersed MANET). Delay/Disruption Tolerant Network (DTN) technology was invented to address these issues: (1) . Relay nodes "take custody" of blocks of network traffic on a hop-by -hop basis and retransmit them in cases of expected or unexpected link outage (2) Bundle lifetime may be configured for long round trip light times. BPTAP is novel by encapsulating Ethernet frames in BP

An Offload NIC for NASA, NLR, and Grid Computing

This work addresses distributed data management and access dynamically configurable high-speed access to data distributed and shared over wide-area high-speed network environments. An offload engine NIC (network interface card) is proposed that scales at nX10-Gbps increments through 100-Gbps full duplex. The Globus de facto standard was used in projects requiring secure, robust, high-speed bulk data transport. Novel extension mechanisms were derived that will combine these technologies for use by GridFTP, bandwidth management resources, and host CPU (central processing unit) acceleration. The result will be wire-rate encrypted Globus grid data transactions through offload for splintering, encryption, and compression. As the need for greater network bandwidth increases, there is an inherent need for faster CPUs. The best way to accelerate CPUs is through a network acceleration engine. Grid computing data transfers for the Globus tool set did not have wire-rate encryption or compression. Existing technology cannot keep pace with the greater bandwidths of backplane and network connections. Present offload engines with ports to Ethernet are 32 to 40 Gbps f-d at best. The best of ultra-high-speed offload engines use expensive ASICs (application specific integrated circuits) or NPUs (network processing units). The present state of the art also includes bonding and the use of multiple NICs that are also in the planning stages for future portability to ASICs and software to accommodate data rates at 100 Gbps. The remaining industry solutions are for carrier-grade equipment manufacturers, with costly line cards having multiples of 10-Gbps ports, or 100-Gbps ports such as CFP modules that interface to costly ASICs and related circuitry. All of the existing solutions vary in configuration based on requirements of the host, motherboard, or carriergrade equipment. The purpose of the innovation is to eliminate data bottlenecks within cluster, grid, and cloud computing systems, and to add several more capabilities while reducing space consumption and cost. Provisions were designed for interoperability with systems used in the NASA HEC (High-End Computing) program. The new acceleration engine consists of state-ofthe- art FPGA (field-programmable gate array) core IP, C, and Verilog code; novel communication protocol; and extensions to the Globus structure. The engine provides the functions of network acceleration, encryption, compression, packet-ordering, and security added to Globus grid or for cloud data transfer. This system is scalable in nX10-Gbps increments through 100-Gbps f-d. It can be interfaced to industry-standard system-side or network-side devices or core IP in increments of 10 GigE, scaling to provide IEEE 40/100 GigE compliance.

Distributed Quantum Processing via Integrated Regional Quantum Networks Using Free-Space Optical Links

The landscape for quantum computing is rapidly evolving with the development of quantum computers and the emergence of future science enabling applications being pursued in many areas, such as distributed quantum computing, hybrid computing scenarios that require cooperatively networked quantum and classical computing assets and more. Quantum networking is also advancing with multiple regional quantum networks and testbeds maturing across the nation. These quantum networking testbeds typically include multiple access points with a heterogeneous mixture of capabilities interconnected by fiber spanning anywhere from tens to hundreds of kilometers; many such networks incorporate a classical networking framework. Alongside these connectivity advancements in the infrastructure, there is quantum sensing device and component technology maturation that is serving to expand the body of quantum networking scenarios that are presently possible and redefining the quantum- enabled future. Bridging the present collective progress in quantum computing and quantum networking will enable the next era of purposeful advancements for national priority use-cases for the benefit of science. One such use-case is enabling future quantum computing applications via integrated regional quantum networking infrastructure in neighboring locations like New York and Maryland, both states are home to robust classical and quantum networking capabilities. To enable near-term distributed quantum computing applications via the practical integration of regional quantum networking infrastructure, free-space optical links via satellite communications will be essential to avoid the exponential loss commonly observed with fiber implementations. There is both an urgent need and a practical justification for pursuing such space-based integration scope now.

GeoBridge: Unearthing Insights from Connecting Communities to Geothermal Information and Opportunities: Preprint

Knowledge is essential for overcoming obstacles in the development and adoption of geothermal technologies, and the geothermal community is home to numerous tools, events and organizations dedicated to sharing knowledge. However, many of these tools can be difficult to find, their resources undiscoverable by search engines, available only to members, or hidden away behind pay walls (Weers et al., 2024). The Department of Energy's (DOE) GeoBridge was developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to help bridge gaps in information and connect the geothermal community to the resources it needs. Launched in October 2024, GeoBridge aspires to expand the pool of geothermal stakeholders by providing in-roads to geothermal information, tools, and community resources. It helps to make these resources available to the broader geothermal community as well as those looking to join, such as entrepreneurs or innovators in adjacent industries looking to expand into geothermal energy. This paper explores a post-launch analysis of GeoBridge including data from analytics, feedback from GeoBridge users, the geothermal community, and the GeoBridge Advisory Group as well as an analysis of efficacy of various promotions for GeoBridge.

Laboratory Testing and Performance Characterization of the High Efficiency Dehumidification System (HEDS) Technology

The high efficiency dehumidification system (HEDS) is a unique air handling unit (AHU) design with two water coils. Connected in series, these water coils can sensibly reheat the airstream after it is cooled and dehumidified, thereby mitigating (or sometimes eliminating) the need for conventional sensible reheat with additional energy from hot water, electric resistance or steam coils. Another unique design feature is the size of the HEDS primary cooling coil. While typical AHU cooling coils have a 6-row geometry, the HED's cooling coil has a deeper 10-row geometry enabling discharge air dew point temperatures at or below 55 degrees F despite warmer chilled water supply temperatures approaching (sometimes exceeding) 50 degrees F. The ability to meet acceptable discharge air dew points with warmer chilled water supply temperatures improves both operational efficiency and system resilience against chilled water plant operational or control issues. This report summarizes the 59 steady-state test results that form a comprehensive performance map of the HEDS technology including its reheat capability. The breadth of outdoor air conditions and flow rates over which the HEDS technology was tested and characterized encompasses the unit 1) operating as a dedicated outdoor air system or mixed air system and 2) controlled with constant air volume or variable air volume fan control.
