Standardization and Recommendations for EVSE Cybersecurity Standards

Currently, there is an absence of cybersecurity certification programs specifically for EVSE. Many existing standards focus primarily on safety, such as battery safety, while others provide cybersecu rity guidelines for different types of equipment, which could be adapted for EVSE. Among these, ISA/IEC 62443 has been identified as highly aligned with EVSE security needs. This report is a follow on to the previous research published (“Assessment and Coordination of EVSE Cybersecurity Standards,”). This report aims to find appropriate strategies for closing the gaps found in the aforementioned report and continue to work towards a comprehensive cybersecurity certification program for EVSE. Future testing will leverage this standard to assess EVSE security gaps and strengths, providing valuable insights to support certification development and harmonization of cybersecurity standards.

Advanced District Energy Controls for Improved Efficiency and Resilience

District energy (DE) systems have efficiently provided heat and cooling to buildings in the US for over a century by leveraging economies of scale through shared generation assets. However, optimizing DE boiler and chiller plants is complex due to the intricate mix of equipment and multiple operating flows. Sophisticated controls are necessary to achieve highest efficiencies.

Evaluate opportunities for monitoring the oxidation states of technetium in both organic and aqueous phases using Raman spectroscopy

An important isotope in the nuclear fuel cycle, 99 Tc is characterized by its long half-life of 2.1 × 10 5 years and its beta emission. It is generated through the fission of 235 U. As the burnup levels of nuclear waste continue to rise, the concentration of technetium in spent fuel increases, leading to a heightened interest in its quantification during the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. In HNO3 environments, technetium predominantly exists as TcO 4 − ; however, it tends to interfere with reducing agents, decreasing the separation efficiency for actinides. Therefore, accurate quantitative determination of technetium is critical to controlling its distribution and mitigating its negative effect on the reprocessing of spent fuel.

Evaluation of IEC 62443 Standard Gaps for Electric Grid Substation Model Use Case

This report presents an evaluation of the IEC 62443 standards in the context of electric grid substations, as part of a collaborative effort among Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), Idaho National Laboratory (INL), and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The primary objective is to assess the applicability of these standards to enhance cybersecurity measures for industrial automation and control systems (IACS) within the energy sector. The evaluation identifies strengths, such as the scalability of security levels and the structured lifecycle guidance provided by IEC 62443. However, it also highlights significant gaps, including limited integration of physical security, insufficient guidance for legacy systems, and challenges in addressing emerging threats like supply chain vulnerabilities. Recommendations for refining the standards are proposed, including the need for tailored guidance for securing legacy systems, integrating physical security with cybersecurity frameworks, and enhancing interoperability across multi-vendor environments. By addressing these gaps, the IEC 62443 standards can be strengthened to ensure comprehensive cybersecurity for electric grid substations, thereby supporting the resilience and reliability of critical energy infrastructure.

Nano- and Earth-Science-inspired Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling to Secure Battery Supply Chain

With the expected growth of electric vehicles (EV) in the transportation sector, recycling or upcycling spent battery materials will be required to reduce EV costs, lessen waste, and ease critical material supply chain pressure for EV battery applications. “Direct” recycling or upcycling is an alternative to current industrial approaches. Many challenges remain for viable direct battery upcycling, including upgrading the transition metal ratio in the costliest component (cathode oxide); separation of transition metal ions in the exit stream; battery disassembly; improving cathode exfoliation which can lead to a new way of direct recycling; and lithium metal anode recycling -- including safety concerns. We devise and deploy a suite of methods to deal with these challenges. The results pave the way to future work on battery recycling, in areas of technological/commercial readiness level ranging from basic research to large-scale commercialization.

Digital Droplet PCR and Mesocosm-Based Methods to Evaluate Biocontainment Strategies in a Native Soil Ecosystem

Genetically modified industrial production microbes and their associated bioproducts have emerged as an integral component of a sustainable bioeconomy. However, the rapid development of these innovative technologies raises biosecurity concerns, namely, the risk of environmental escape. Thus, the realization of a bioeconomy hinges not only on the development and deployment of microbial production hosts, but also on the development of secure biosystems and biocontainment designs. Current laboratory-based biocontainment testing systems do not accurately reflect the complexities found in natural environments, necessitating an environmentally relevant analysis pipeline that allows for the detection of rare escapees within a complex soil microbiome and differentiation between closely related strains. To this end, we have developed an approach that utilizes soil mesocosms and integrated digital droplet PCR (ddPCR) system to evaluate the efficacy of novel biocontainment strategies. We demonstrate the utility of this approach by modeling contamination with industrial microbial chasses versus their biocontained counterparts. Here we demonstrate the broad utility of this system by highlighting findings from strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae that are contained with an inducible toxin anti-toxin system, strains of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 contained via gene knockout or toxin anti-toxin system, and strains of Escherichia coli that are contained via genomic recoding. We also show that ddPCR can be used to detect gene copies from E. coli equal to those counted by traditional spot plating assays. The resultant data demonstrates that this system has broad utility across diverse microbial chassis and biocontainment strategies and enables researchers to track the fate of our contaminating microbe with high sensitivity in the soil. The findings presented here support the use of this mesocosm-based approach to assess the environmental impact of industrial microbes and to validate biocontainment strategies.
