Intrinsic Berry curvature driven anomalous Nernst thermopower in the semimetallic Heusler alloy CoFeVSb

Understanding of spin-heat coupling mechanisms and magnetothermoelectric phenomena, including the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), in emergent quaternary Heusler alloys is of practical importance for applications in thermal management and energy harvesting. Here, we demonstrate an intrinsic Berry curvature mediated anomalous Nernst thermopower in CoFeVSb, which orders magnetically at high temperature ( T C ≈ 850 K ) with a large saturation magnetization of ≈ 2.2 μ B / f . u . at room temperature. We show that the electron-electron elastic and electron-magnon inelastic scattering dominate longitudinal electrical transport at low temperatures ( T ≤ 50 K ), whereas the electron-phonon and electron-magnon scatterings govern it at higher T . The longitudinal thermopower is resulted mainly from the diffusive contribution with a very large longitudinal Seebeck coefficient ( 42 μ V K - 1 at 395 K). The value of the anomalous Nernst coefficient ( S ANE ) for CoFeVSb at room temperature is 0.039 μ V K - 1 which is higher than the compressively strained SrRu O 3 film ( 0.03 μ V K - 1 ) as well as the spin gapless semiconductor CoFeCrGa ( 0.018 μ V K - 1 ). On lowering T , both the ordinary Nernst coefficient and carrier mobility increase but an opposite trend is found for S ANE . Our ab initio simulations reveal the topological semimetallic nature of CoFeVSb with a pair of Weyl points. These Weyl crossings result in a significant contribution to the Berry curvature, leading to an intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity ( σ x y AHE ) of ≈ 85 S/cm, which matches well with experiment (77 S/cm at 2 K). Our experimental findings and ab initio calculations support the dominance of the intrinsic Berry curvature in the observed ANE. The ratio of σ x y AHE to the transverse anomalous thermoelectric conductivity ( α x y ANE ) shows an increasing trend with T attaining a sizable fraction of k B e ( ≈ 0.35 k B e ) at room temperature.

Forward doubly-virtual Compton scattering off an unpolarized deuteron in pionless effective field theory

In this work, we calculate the forward unpolarised doubly-virtual Compton scattering (VVCS) off the deuteron in the framework of pionless effective field theory, up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) for the longitudinal and next-to-leading order (NLO) for the transverse amplitude. The charge elastic form factor of the deuteron, obtained from the residue of the longitudinal VVCS amplitude, is used to extract the value of the single unknown two-nucleon one-photon contact coupling that enters the longitudinal amplitude at N3LO. We also study the lowest spin-independent generalised polarisabilities of the deuteron. The calculated unpolarised VVCS amplitude provides a high-precision model-independent input for a future calculation of the two-photon-exchange correction to the Lamb shift of muonic deuterium.

Generalized parton distributions from lattice QCD with asymmetric momentum transfer: Unpolarized quarks at nonzero skewness

We extend the formalism of asymmetric frames of reference for generalized parton distributions (GPDs) to the case of nonzero skewness, i.e., including longitudinal momentum transfer. The framework, based on Lorentz-invariant amplitudes and previously developed and numerically implemented for unpolarized, helicity and transversity GPDs at zero skewness, gives efficient access to a broad range of kinematics, making full mapping of GPDs from the lattice realistic. The general-skewness formalism is tested using lattice data with both transverse and longitudinal or only longitudinal momentum transfer, the latter being a special case with a reduced number of independent amplitudes. We extract the amplitudes in coordinate space and express the GPDs 𝐻 and 𝐸 in terms of these amplitudes. This is followed by reconstruction of quasidistributions and their matching to the light cone. We further identify and discuss the principal challenges for nonzero skewness GPDs.

Dynamics of quarks and gauge fields in the lowest-energy states in QED and QCD interactions

We examine the dynamics of quarks and gauge fields in the lowest energy states in the QED and QCD interactions by combining Schwinger’s longitudinal confinement in (1+1)D with Polyakov’s transverse confinement in (2+1)D in a “stretch (2+1)D” flux tube model in (3+1)D. For such QED and QCD systems in the flux tube configuration with cylindrical symmetry, we separate out the transverse and longitudinal degrees of freedom, approximate the non-Abelian QCD in the quasi-Abelian approximation, and solve the derived equations to study the collective excitations. Here, we find stable collective QED and QCD excitations showing up as confined QED and QCD mesons, in support of previous theoretical studies and recent observations of the anomalous hypothetical X17 and E38 particles. Future theoretical lattice gauge calculations of QED in (3+1)D with the inclusion of the Schwinger longitudinal confinement mechanism and experimental confirmation of the hypothetical X17 and E38 particles will shed definitive light on quark confinement in the QED interaction in (3+1)D.

Space Charge Dominated Momentum Spread and Compensation Strategies in the Post-Linac Section of Proton Improvement Plan-II at Fermilab

The upcoming Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II), designated for enhancements to the Fermilab accelerator complex, features a Beam Transfer Line (BTL) that channels the beam from the linac exit to the booster. In the absence of longitudinal focusing beyond the superconducting linac, the beam experiences an elevated momentum spread, primarily due to nonlinear space-charge forces, surpassing the allowable limit of 2.1e-4. This study presents a detailed examination of the space-charge-induced momentum spread and outlines mitigative strategies. The investigation includes the fine-tuning of a de-buncher cavity, analyzed in terms of operating frequency, longitudinal location, and gap voltage, under both standard and perturbed beam conditions—specifically accounting for momentum jitter and energy variation. The impact of buncher cavity misalignments on the beam's longitudinal phase space is also assessed. The paper concludes by recommending an optimized cavity configuration to effectively mitigate the observed increase in momentum spread along the BTL.

X-ray Irradiance Distribution for an Interferometer with a Curved Biprism Array

The development of interferometry-based X-ray phase contrast imaging systems that provide highly resolved X-rays with spatially-modulated intensity is enabling the full potential of X-ray optics to image phase, attenuation, and small angle scatter properties of soft tissue. In this work we present analytical formulations of a new hardware concept for X-ray phase contrast imaging wherein the phase grating is replaced with an array of Fresnel biprisms. We derive expressions for the irradiance distribution pattern of a biprism interferometer composed of a curved biprism array with multiple biprisms and multiple point sources. These expressions are used to plot fringe patterns for X-ray design parameters, including 1) size, number, and period of X-ray point sources; 2) biprism parameters of material composition, angle, number, and period; and 3) biprism array to X-ray source and detector distances. Analytical results show that the biprism interferometer provides a longitudinally-nonperiodic pattern of spatially modulated intensity different from the Talbot longitudinally-periodic pattern common in grating interferometry. The curvature of the biprism array brings a sharper longitudinal fringe pattern. Experiments are being performed to verify the analytical calculations for a biprism plastic material of SU-8 using a synchrotron source. X-ray biprism material has widely varied indexes of refraction relative to wavelength and thus the separation of the virtual sources and resulting interference fringe period also varies with X-ray wavelength. Our aim is to develop biprism interferometry imaging systems with excellent polychromatic performance that produce high-contrast fringes with spatially incoherent X-ray illumination. Biprism interferometry will potentially provide higher fringe visibility with better image quality to that of diffraction grating interferometry.

Design and Production for Maximum Structural Efficiency With Respect to Fiber Orientation With Increased Understanding of Hybrid Fiber Flow Behavior

Discontinuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites have gained considerable attention in automotive, aerospace, and other industries, due to their high-rate of production combined with their ability to attain complex and intricate shapes. Among other high-rate thermoplastic manufacturing processes, injection-molding is one of the most common manufacturing methods due to fast production and high surface finishing of complex geometries. Fiber orientation in discontinuous fiber composites plays a pivotal role in determining the mechanical, electrical, and thermomechanical properties, underscoring the necessity to comprehend fiber orientation in injection molded parts. Among different fiber types, glass and carbon fibers are most common in the composite industries. The recent trend of hybrid composites comprising both glass fiber (GF) and carbon fiber (CF) is also gaining importance in the automotive industry. Hybrid fiber options allow designers to optimize the balance between glass and carbon fibers by leveraging the high durability and low cost of GF while the strength and lightweight properties of CF. Consequently, comparing the fiber oriented distribution (FOD) of injection molded composites containing GF, CF, and a hybrid of GF/CF is critical to investigating the local mechanical properties of intricate structures for high-end applications. In Phase I of this project, FOD in injection-molded panels with respect to distance from the gate was analyzed using X-ray computed tomography (X-CT) for GF, CF, and hybrid CF/GF (CGF) reinforced nylon 66. To understand the reason behind the FOD with different fiber types, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and rheology were performed. Samples were extracted at three locations: near the gate, center, and opposite end. Thickness of the layers of typical skin-shell-core type FOD varies with fiber type and location. GF achieved flow direction alignment (in shell) earlier than viscous CF and CGF near the gate, whereas CF showed the highest flow-direction alignment at the center due to shear induced orientation. At the opposite end, GF experienced more backflow than others indicating faster mold filling owing to its lower viscosity. Hybrid CGF exhibited GF-dominated center and CF-dominated end region. The numerical model used to obtain FOD and rheological predictions for the CF and GF composites served to corroborate the trends observed in the experimental trials. The FOD responses across fiber types and location were reflected in their longitudinal and transverse properties. Only GF showed higher longitudinal modulus over transverse modulus near the gate attributed to rapid alignment, whereas CF and CGF exhibited opposite trend. However, fountain flow enhanced the longitudinal modulus over transverse modulus with the distance for all, particularly for CF. This study offers insights into mold filling behavior of different fibers which are critical in optimizing injection molding conditions for tailored final properties.

Dynamics of quarks and gauge fields in the lowest-energy states in QCD and QED

The dynamics of quarks and gauge fields in the lowest energy states in QCD and QED interactions is studied by compactifying the (3+1)D space-time to the (1+1)D space-time with cylindrical symmetry and by combining Schwinger's longitudinal confinement in (1+1)D with Polyakov's transverse confinement in (2+1)D. Using the action integral, we separate out the transverse and longitudinal degrees of freedom. By solving the derived transverse and longitudinal equations, we study the QCD and QED collective excitations. In addition to the well known QCD low-energy states, we find stable collective QED excitations showing up as massive QED-confined mesons, in support of previous studies. In particular, the masses of the recently observed X17 particle at about 17 MeV and the E38 particle at about 38 MeV are calculated in the developed approach, in good agreement with experimental results.

Voyager 1 and 2 Observations of a Change in the Nature of Magnetic Fluctuations in the VLISM with Increasing Distance from the Heliopause

Voyager 2 (V2) crossed the heliopause at 119.0 au on 2018 day 309, after which it observed compressive (longitudinal) magnetic field fluctuations along the average magnetic field direction in the very local interstellar medium (VLISM) at distances from 119.00 to 121.48 au and latitudes 32.°2 to 32.°4 S in heliographic inertial coordinates from 2018 day 309 to 2019 day 230. This result confirms the observations of longitudinal magnetic field fluctuations by Voyager 1 (V1) between 124.14 and 128.71 au at 34.°6N (∼2–7 au upwind of the heliopause) from 2013 day 133 to 2014 day 235. V1 crossed the heliopause at 121.58 au and 34.°5N on 2012 day 238. It came as a surprise to find it seemed that V1 observed transverse (Alfvénic) fluctuations of B between 131.40 and 135.98 au at latitude 34.°6–34.°7N (∼10–14 au upwind of the heliopause) from 2015 day 145 to 2016 day 248. The most recent V1 observations show the possible presence of transverse fluctuations of B in the VLISM from 141.44 to 146.01 au at 34.°7–34.°8N (∼20–24 au from the heliopause) between 2018 day 75 and 2019 day 178. Together, these observations show that longitudinal (compressive) magnetic field fluctuations are transmitted through the heliopause from the heliosheath into the VLISM, and are then converted into transverse (Alfvénic) fluctuations at ∼130 au (∼8 au from the heliopause) that are observed out at 146 au (∼24 au from the heliopause).

Deep Exclusive p 0 Electroproduction Measured in Hall A at Jefferson Lab with the Upgraded CEBAF

Our understanding of the proton's structure in terms of its fundamental degrees of freedom, quarks and gluons, is incomplete. Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) can enhance our understanding of the partonic structure of the proton as it includes the correlation between the momentum and transverse position of partons. Exclusive electroproduction of the pion (ep→e'p'π 0 ) is one of the potential channels to access the GPDs. GPDs are defined at the Bjorken limit where the total amplitude can be factorized in a hard scattering of the photon off the quark and a soft part described by the GPDs. At sufficiently high Q 2 , a factorization scheme for exclusive meson production processes exists but only for longitudinally polarized virtual photons. As long as the longitudinally polarized virtual photons dominate the cross-section, we can have factorization and extract the GPDs. But the existing data for π 0 production at low Q 2 and low x B show the dominance of transverse part of the cross-section over the longitudinal one. Some transversity GPD models have found that an effective way to factorize the contribution from transversely polarized virtual photons to explain the dominance of σ T over σ L , shown by existing data. The experiment E12-06-114 ran in experimental Hall A during 2014-2016. The primary goal of this experiment was to measure the DVCS cross-section but the experimental configuration also allows the measurement of deep exclusive π 0 production. Taking advantage of the upgraded CEBAF at Jefferson Lab, we explored the high Bjorken-x (0.60) and high Q 2 regime for the first time. The extracted cross-section terms for π 0 production helps us to test the validity of QCD factorization in our kinematic regime. Our π 0 production results can be used to test and improve the existing models of proton structure. Cross-section results will be presented at two different Q 2 values for fixed x B of 0.60.
