Description and test results of a digital supersonic propulsion system integrated control

A digitally implemented integrated inlet/engine control system was developed and tested on a mixed compression, Mach 2.5, supersonic inlet and augmented turbofan engine. The control matched engine airflow to available inlet airflow so that in steady state, the shock would be at the desired location, and the overboard bypass doors would be closed. During engine induced transients, such as augmentor lights and cutoffs, the inlet operating point was momentarily changed to a more supercritical point to minimize unstarts. The digital control also provided automatic inlet restart.

Rapid and precise measurement of flatband voltage

The paper outlines the design, principles of operation, and calibration of a five-IC network intended to give a rapid, precise, and automatic determination of the flatband voltage of MOS capacitors. The basic principle of measurement is to compare the analog output voltage of a capacitance meter - which is directly proportional to the capacitance being measured - with a preset or dialed-in voltage proportional to the calculated flatband capacitance by means of a comparator circuit. The bias to the MOS capacitor supplied through the capacitance meter is provided by a ramp voltage going from a negative toward a positive voltage level and vice versa. The network employs two monostable multivibrators for reading and recording the flatband voltage and for resetting the initial conditions and restarting the ramp. The flatband voltage can be held and read on a digital voltmeter.

A 15,000-hour cyclic endurance test of an 8-centimeter-diameter electron bombardment mercury ion thruster

A laboratory model 8 cm thruster with improvements to minimize ion chamber erosion and peeling of sputtered metal was subjected to a cyclic endurance test for 15,040 hours and 460 restarts. A charted history of several thruster operating variables and off-normal events are shown in 600-hour segments at three points in the test. The transient behavior of these variables during a typical start-stop cycle is presented. Finding of the post-test inspection confirmed most of the expected results. Charge exchange ions caused normal accelerator grid erosion. The workability of the various design features was substantiated, and attainable improvements in propellant utilization efficiency should significantly reduce accelerator erosion.

High reliability cathode heaters for ion thrusters

A number of space missions were proposed which utilize 30-cm mercury bombardment ion thrusters and also require a large number of thruster restarts. A test program was carried out to determine thermal cycle life of several different cathode heater designs. Plasma/flame sprayed heaters and swaged type heaters were tested. Four of the five plasma/flame sprayed heaters tested failed in a comparatively short time. Four tantalum swaged heaters that were brazed to the tantalum cathode tube were successfully tested and met the goals that were set at the start of the test.

Implementation on a nonlinear concrete cracking algorithm in NASTRAN

A computer code for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was developed using NASTRAN as a basis. Nonlinear iteration procedures were developed for obtaining solutions with a wide variety of loading sequences. A direct access file system was used to save results at each load step to restart within the solution module for further analysis. A multi-nested looping capability was implemented to control the iterations and change the loads. The basis for the analysis is a set of mutli-layer plate elements which allow local definition of materials and cracking properties.

Vapor ingestion in Centaur liquid-hydrogen tank

Vapor ingestion phenomena were investigated using scale models of the Centaur liquid hydrogen tank to determine the height of the free surface of the liquid when vapor is intially ingested into the tank outlet. Data are compared with an analysin and, is general the agreement is very good. Predictions are presented for minimum liquid levels required in the Centaur liquid hydrogen tank in order to prevent vapor ingestion when restarting the engines in space and the quantities of liquid remaining in the tank at vapor ingestion during main engine firing.

A charted history of several thruster operating variables and off-normal events are shown in 600-hour segments at three points in the test. The transient behavior of these variables during a typical start-stop cycle is presented. Performance and operating characteristics were nearly constant throughout the test except for a change in the accelerator back-streaming limit. Findings of the post-test inspection confirmed most of the expected results. Charge-exchange ions caused normal accelerator grid erosion. The workability of the various design features have been substantiated, and attainable improvements in propellant utilization efficiency should significantly reduce accelerator erosion.

Quick look test report: MPT static firing no. 2 test MPT-S2

The three engine cluster was fired at 70 percent power level for a nominal 15 seconds to evaluate the integrated performance of the main propulsion system. Engine ignition occurred at approximately 1403 with the planned mainstage duration achieved for all three engines. Operation of all systems was as expected with the exception of the recirculation pumps. The pumps were started while the propellant loading was in fast fill, but they cavitated and lost head at the termination of fast fill. The pumps were subsequently restarted after pressurizing the tank and draining back propellant to get good quality. Post test inspection of the engines revealed some discoloration on the inside of the thrust chamber and distorted drain lines for engine #2.

X10: A FORTRAN direct access data management system

The XIO system is a set of subroutines that provide generalized data management capability for FORTRAN programs using a direct access file. Arrays of integer, real, double precision, and character data may be stored, each logical group of data identified by a unique matrix number. A matrix may be organized and stored as batches to reduce core requirements. Batches may be accessed randomly or sequentially. The file may be checkpointed and retained, allowing for restarts with stored values. The XIO subroutines operate on either IBM 360-370/OS/VS or DEC PDP-11/RSX computing systems.

Kalman filter divergence and aircraft motion estimators

Kalman filters designed for many aerospace systems turn out to be unsatisfactory. The estimate errors become large compared to the errors predicted by the theory ('divergence'). One of the principal causes of this failure is that the system model contains states or modes that are undisturbed by the modeled process noise, and are neutrally stable (NS). One cure for such problems is periodic restarting of a time-varying Kalman filter. Other cures include minimum variance observers with eigenvalue constraints, added noise, pole-shifting, and destabilization. Several examples are given, including effective time-invariant estimators for the longitudinal and lateral motions of an airplane where several NS modes are undisturbed by wind gusts. An interpretation of these estimators as a 'strapdown IMU' without accelerometers, gimbaled gyros, or servos is given.

Composite propellant combustion modeling studies

A review is presented of theoretical and experimental studies of composite propellant combustion. The theoretical investigations include a model of the combustion of a nonmetallized ammonium perchlorate (AP) propellant (noting time scales for vapor-phase combustion and the condensed phase) and response functions in pressure-coupled oscillations. The experimental studies are discussed with reference to scale-modeling apparatus, flame standoff distance versus velocity as a function of pressure, and results from T-burner firings of a nonmetallized AP/polysulfide propellant. Research applications including problems with nitramine propellants, the feasibility of stop-restart rockets with salt quench, and combustion problems in large boosters are outlined.

General purpose computer program for interacting supersonic configurations. User's manual

The input data required to execute the computer program ISCON are described. The program generates a numerical procedure for the determination of unsteady aerodynamic forces on arbitrarily interacting wings and tails in supersonic flow. A velocity potential gradient method is used. Constant Mach number is assumed throughout the flow field. Lifting surfaces are represented by trapezoidal elements which can be generated automatically by the program. The wake field is represented by rectangular strip elements. The formulation is reviewed as well as input overview and input format. Instruction on how to use ISCON, a sample problem, and the restart feature are discussed. Program size limitations, computer program flow, and error messages are also included along with a description of the SS31 program used to compute the coefficients of surface spline.

Growth stage estimation

Of the three candidate approaches to adjustment of the crop calendar to account for year-to-year weather differences, the Robertson triquadratic unit, a function of a nonlinear function of maximum and minimum temperature and day length, best described the rate of phenological development of wheat. The adjustable crop calendar (ACC) as implemented for LACIE is used to calculate the daily increment of development through six physiological stages of growth. Topics covered include dormancy modeling, the spring restart model, spring wheat starter model, winter starter model, winter wheat starter model, inclusion of the moisture variable, and display of crop stage estimation results. Assessment of the ACC accuracy over the period of LACIE operation indicates that the adjustable crop calendars used provided more accurate information than would have been available using historical norms. The models performed best under the conditions from which they were derived (Canadian spring wheat) and most poorly for the dwarf varieties and Southern Hemisphere applications.
