Management of reservoir pressure is expected to be a key issue in the implementation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, as it may be necessary to produce brine from an aquifer to offset the increase in subsurface pressure.

Climate in the Arctic is changing at a rapid pace. When vegetation reacts to these changes, chemicals called biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) can be released into the atmosphere in new ways. This project seeks to investigate how climate change affects the quantity and type of BVOCs released into the atmosphere on the North Slope of Alaska (NSA). In addition, we are interested in the chemical reactions these BVOCs undergo in the arctic atmosphere. Project goals will be accomplished through field work on the NSA at the U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s observatory in Utqiagvik, real-time measurements, and collection and laboratory analysis of atmospheric aerosol samples.
Mercury (especially when transformed by environmental microbes into methylmercury [MeHg]) is one of the only metals known to biomagnify in aquatic food webs, leading to elevated concentrations of this toxicant in fish. However, because Hg is predominantly accumulated in fish via dietary rather than aqueous exposure, the link between aqueous Hg concentrations and concentrations in fish is not always straightforward. This is particularly confounding for remediation efforts at contaminated sites because although reducing aqueous Hg concentrations may be achievable, concentrations in fish may not respond to these reductions in aqueous concentrations if a sufficient amount of Hg remains within the food web or if conditions favor Hg methylation in the environment.
The Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) ARC reactor will employ a novel liquid immersion blanket design that uses a molten lithium salt as both the tritium-breeding material and the vacuum vessel coolant. fluoride lithium beryllium (FLiBe) (a lithium fluoride–beryllium difluoride mixture) is currently the leading salt candidate. Its low-Z components provide good moderation, it has adequate heat transfer properties and low electrical conductivity, and it has good neutron multiplication properties, which further enhance tritium production.

Site-specific introduction of isotopes in tetrapyrrole macrocycles provides the foundation for probing physicochemical features germane to photosynthetic energy-transduction processes, but has chiefly been done with porphyrins rather than the more biologically relevant hydroporphyrin analogues of native photosynthetic pigments. A prior study incorporated pairwise 13C or 15N atoms in the skeleton of a bacteriochlorin containing a gem-dimethyl group in each pyrroline ring. Here, a complementary effort is reported that installs deuterium atoms in substituents at the perimeter of a bacteriochlorin. Thus, perdeuteriated 3-methyl-2,4-pentanedione was converted in an 8-step synthesis via the intermediacy of tert-butyl 5-formyl-3,4-bis(trideuteriomethyl)pyrrole-2-carboxylate to the 2,3,12,13-tetrakis(trideuteriomethyl)-8,8,18,18-tetramethylbacteriochlorin (BC-2). The fidelity of isotope substitution was maintained throughout the synthesis. Resonance Raman spectroscopy of the copper chelate (CuBC-2) revealed that addition of the four β-pyrrolic substituents alone is not sufficient to account for the vibronic complexity observed for the copper chelate of bacteriochlorophyll a (CuBChl a). The increased vibronic activity exhibited by the natural pigments and CuBChl a must arise from the increased structural complexity of the macrocycle.

Disclosed herein are methods and systems for recovery of ancylite, a rare earth mineral comprising strontium carbonate, from rare earth ore. In many embodiments, the disclosed methods and systems provide for recovery of greater than 50% of the ancylite from an ancylite containing ore. In many embodiments, the ore is subjected to flotation in the presence of an acid, for example a hydroxamic acid, such as octanohydroxamic acid. The ore may also be subjected to magnetic separation, for example wet high intensity magnetic separation.

Mercury is believed to have had a magma ocean in its early evolution whose solidification dynamics contributed to the planet’s present day surface composition. The surface is characterized by two main geological provinces; the Northern Smooth Plains (NSP),and the Heavily Cratered Terrain (HCT) and Intercratered Terrian (IcT). These provinces are defined by the differences in morphology, composition, and age. The NSP are located in the northern hemisphere and have low Mg/Si, Ca/Si, and S/Si ratios and high Al/Si ratios, and are compositionally analogous to a magnesian alkali basalt. The HCT/IcT cover the majority of the planet and are older than the NSP, and are characterized by high Mg/Si, Ca/Si, and S/Si ratios and low Al/Si ratios. The dichotomy in surface composition motivates the study into the structure of the mantle as a product of magma ocean solidification. Two important and interrelated parameters that determine the efficiency of crystal fractionation during magma ocean solidification are convection vigor and viscosity of the magma ocean. Crystal suspension in a cooling magma ocean could be efficient or inefficient which suggests two end member possibilities for magma ocean solidification. The first is the formation of a compositionally stratified mantle reflecting a cumulate sequence produced along a fractional liquid line of descent. The second is the formation of a well-mixed, batch crystallized mantle by high viscosity and/or vigorously convecting magma ocean. Determining which of these end members, or where on the spectrum between them is most relevant to Mercury’s magma ocean can be experimentally constrained through high P-T falling-sphere viscometry experiments.
The various technologies presented herein relate to fabrication and operation of a heat exchanger that is configured to extract heat from an underlying substrate. Heat can be extracted by way of an air gap formed between an impeller and a baseplate. By utilizing a pump to create an initial air gap that is further maintained by rotation of the impeller relative to the baseplate, a spring can be utilized that can apply a force of greater magnitude to the impeller than is used in a conventional approach, thus enabling the weight of the impeller to be negligible with respect to a width of the air gap, thereby conferring the desirable feature of orientation independence with respect to gravity with no performance degradation.
A ball transfer mechanism for a harmonic drive and linear piston motor is disclosed. The ball transfer mechanism includes a spherical ball and a cylindrical seat portion. The seat portion defines a hemispherical shaped recess with a contour for receiving the ball. The ball transfer mechanism is in an exterior wall of a housing for converting rotary motion to linear motion, driving a linear piston motor. The harmonic drive drives a rotor of the linear piston motor. The harmonic drive includes a hollow cylindrical coupler portion engaging a rotor portion for transferring torque to the rotor portion. Transfer mechanisms disposed along a housing wall of the linear piston motor engage the coupler portion. The coupler portion includes harmonic cam grooves for receiving spherical balls in the ball transfer mechanism that drives rotational motion in the rotor in response to axially linear movement of the piston assembly.
