Characteristics of the Single-Longitudinal-Mode Planar-Waveguide External Cavity Diode Laser at 1064 nm

We describe the characteristics of the planar-waveguide external cavity diode laser (PW-ECL). To the best of our knowledge, it is the first butterfly-packaged 1064 nm semiconductor laser that is stable enough to be locked to an external frequency reference. We evaluated its performance from the viewpoint of precision experiments. Using a hyperfine absorption line of iodine, we suppressed its frequency noise by a factor of up to 104 at 10 mHz. The PWECL's compactness and low cost make it a candidate to replace traditional Nd:YAG nonplanar ring oscillators and fiber lasers in applications that require a single longitudinal mode.

Diagnostics and control of wavenumber stability and purity of tunable diode lasers relevant to their use as local oscillators in heterodyne systems

Initial operation of the tunable diode lasers (TDL) showed that it was not possible to adjust the wavenumber to one selected a priori in the TDL tuning range. During operation, the operating point would change by 0.1/cm over the longer term with even larger changes occurring during some thermal cycles. Most changes during thermal cycling required using lower temperatures and higher currents to reach the former wavenumber (when it could be reached). In many cases, an operating point could be selected by changing TDL current and temperature to give both the desired wavenumber and most of the power in a single mode. The selection procedure had to be used after each thermal cycling. Wavenumber nonlinearities of about 10% over a 0.5 cm tuning range were observed. Diagnostics of the single mode selected by a grating monochromator showed wavenumber fine structure under certain operating conditions. The characteristics due to the TDL environment included short term wavenumber stability, the instrument lineshape function, and intermediate term wavenumber stability.

Correlation-based technique for automated tunable diode laser scan stabilization

A software-based method for real-time, active stabilization of tunable diode laser spectral scans is described. The procedure is suitable for use with field and laboratory instrumentation where automated, unattended spectrometer operation is required. An autocorrelation of two high-resolution reference gas infrared spectra is computed at regular intervals, and the location of the maximum value of the autocorrelation provides the relative abscissa shift between the spectra. Small adjustments to the laser scan parameters are thereby made to ensure that drifts in the laser output frequency are tracked and compensated. Calculations required for stabilization of a 512-point spectrum can be completed in under 25 ms using an inexpensive, moderate-speed, array processor installed in a PC.

Laser diode ignition characteristics of Zirconium Potassium Perchlorate (ZPP)

Hi-Shear Technology, Corp., (HSTC) has designed and built a Laser equivalent NASA Standard Initiator (LNSI). Langlie tests with a laser diode output initiating ZPP were conducted as a part of this effort. The test parameters include time to first pressure, laser power density requirements, and ignition time. The data from these laser tests on ZPP are presented.

Heterodyne spectroscopy of astronomical and laboratory sources at 8.5 microns using diode laser local oscillators

The first 8.5 microns infrared heterodyne spectrometer has been constructed using tuneable semiconductor (PbSe) diode lasers and was used to measure absorption line profiles of N2O in the laboratory, as well as black-body emission from the moon and from Mars. Spectral information was recorded over a 200 MHz bandwidth using an 8-channel filter bank. The resolution was 25 MHz (6 millionths of a micron), and the minimum detectable (black-body) power was approximately 1 times 10 to the minus 16th power W for 8 min of integration. The results demonstrate the usefulness of heterodyne spectroscopy for the study of remote and local sources in the infrared.

Laboratory simulation of tunable diode laser remote measurement of atmospheric gases using topographic targets

In order to test the possibility that tunable diode laser (TDL) systems using topographic targets can be applied to the measurement of a variety of gases at concentrations and distances characteristic of industrial gas leaks, a single-ended TDL system was assembled for use with selected topographic targets to detect NO2 at atmospheric pressure and NO2 and NH3 at low pressures. In both cases, the intensity distribution of radiation backscattered from selected targets was found to be heavily weighted to a specular rather than a Lambertian distribution. A sensitivity of 5 ppm-m has been demonstrated for the case of NO2.

Diode laser measurements of the band strengths of nu(3) and nu(6) in (C-12)H3D

A diode laser spectrometer has been used to measure line strengths for 143 transitions in the nu(6) fundamental band of (C-12)H3D near 9 microns. These line-strength measurements have been used to derive a band strength for nu(6) and nu(3). The band strength derived for nu(6) is 61.7 + or - 1.8/sq cm/atm and that for nu(3) is 49.3 + or - 1.4/sq cm/atm at 295 K.

Fiber-optic interferometer using frequency-modulated laser diodes

This paper describes an electrically passive fiber-optic interferometer which uses dual frequency-modulated laser diodes. Experimental results show that this type of interferometer can attain a displacement range of 100 micron with subnanometer resolution. This technique can serve as the basis for a number of high-precision fiber-optic sensors.

Tunable diode laser spectral diagnostic studies of a pressure modulator radiometer

The successful application of high-resolution tunable diode laser spectroscopy to the diagnostic measurement of a pressure modulator radiometer (PMR) is reported, and recorded line transmission profiles for a single N2O line at 1272/cm are presented. PMR measurements obtained for mean cell pressures of about 10, 20, and 30 Torr were found to be consistent with theoretical predictions. The validity of single-pressure and two-pressure approximation representations of the mean and modulated PMR transmission spectra has been verified.

Linear laser diode arrays for improvement in optical disk recording for space stations

The design and fabrication of individually addressable laser diode arrays for high performance magneto-optic recording systems are presented. Ten diode arrays with 30 mW cW light output, linear light vs. current characteristics and single longitudinal mode spectrum were fabricated using channel substrate planar (CSP) structures. Preliminary results on the inverse CSP structure, whose fabrication is less critically dependent on device parameters than the CSP, are also presented. The impact of systems parameters and requirements, in particular, the effect of feedback on laser design is assessed, and techniques to reduce feedback or minimize its effect on systems performance, including mode-stabilized structures, are evaluated.

Optimized Biasing of Pump Laser Diodes in a Highly Reliable Metrology Source for Long-Duration Space Missions

Non Planar Ring Oscillator (NPRO) lasers are highly attractive for metrology applications. NPRO reliability for prolonged space missions is limited by reliability of 808 nm pump diodes. Combined laser farm aging parameter allows comparing different bias approaches. Monte-Carlo software developed to calculate the reliability of laser pump architecture, perform parameter sensitivity studies To meet stringent Space Interferometry Mission (SIM) Lite lifetime reliability / output power requirements, we developed a single-mode Laser Pump Module architecture that: (1) provides 2 W of power at 808 nm with >99.7% reliability for 5.5 years (2) consists of 37 de-rated diode lasers operating at -5C, with outputs combined in a very low loss 37x1 all-fiber coupler

Airborne tunable diode laser system for trace gas measurements

Sachse et al. (1976) have reported the development of an airborne tunable diode laser (TDL) system, named the Differential Absorption CO Monitor (DACOM). The absorption path was 10 m long and located in the free airstream along the fuselage of a C-54 aircraft. The present investigation is concerned with a modification of the DACOM instrument. Differences between the new instrument and the original one are related to a replacement of the external absorption path with a White cell. The instrument has the capability to suppress TDL excess noise. The laser refrigerator has been redesigned to permit an alternative method of cooling the TDL when electric power is not available.

Airborne tunable diode laser sensor for high-precision concentration and flux measurements of carbon monoxide and methane

An airborne tunable diode laser instrument is described that is capable of operating in two measurement modes. One mode provides high precision (0.1 percent CH4; 1 percent CO) measurements of CH4 and CO with a 5 second response time, and a second mode achieves the very fast response time that is necessary to make airborne eddy correlation flux measurements. Examples of data from atmospheric expeditions of the Global Tropospheric Experiment are presented.

Gaseous oxygen detection using laser diodes

Transitions in the R-branch of the O2 A-band have been observed by modulating IR laser diode temperatures; on the basis of these transitions, O2 concentrations as low as 750 ppm can be determined. The transmission measurement's achievable precision correlates with an O2 concentration uncertainty of only 0.5 percent. Both the concentration and the static temperature of the gas are thereby determinable. Improved optics are being designed to improve these performance figures.
